Sacajawea was born in Idaho in a tribe called the Shoshone. While she was growing up, people called her “Bird Woman.” She was also the daughter of an important leader of her tribe.

• Captured- 1799When Sacajawea was fifteen, she was captured by

her enemy tribe, Minnetarees. She was taken away 600 miles away to a village named Minnetaree. One of her friends escaped from being a prisoner. Sacajawea was far from home. When she arrived at the village, a man traded her to a man named Toussaint Charbonneau and she married him a few days later.

prized possession, a beautiful belt of blue beads. She was forced to give up the tribe’s treasure to a Chinook Indian Chief. She received a blue cloth coat in exchange.
