opment, usage, and/or integration in the country. This initiative goes alongwith the creation of three cybercities, within the framework of an economicand social reengineering at the scale of the whole country, to make Mauritiusa cyber-island.

In this respect, the University of Mauritius is interested in working withcolleagues from other universities who are on sabbatical. The Virtual Centerfor Innovative Learning Technologiges (VCILT) offers partial support (accom-modation or packages negotiable for research expenses) for onsite semester, academic, and calendar-year sabbatical leaves.

The goal of this sabbatical support program for applied research is to stim-ulate applied research in information and communications technology (ICT)development, education, usage, or integration.

In order to build a sustainable research development framework, facultyapplicants are expected to propose a project in applied research in relatedfields, over a period of two years at least, including a six-month-to-one-yearstay in Mauritius, eventually followed by internships for MSc and PhD stu-dents. There will be opportunities for developing applied research protocolsand partnerships with private companies in the cybercity, community groups, and academia; for using pilot data in seeking public or private sponsorship;and for overcoming other challenges inherent in applied research projects.

The Lifelong Learning Cluster, the Centre for Professional Developmentand Lifelong Learning, and the VCILT are interested in projects related to ICTeducation, usage, and integration. The Centre for Information Technology andSystems, in collaboration with the Computer Science Department, is ratherinterested in research projects related to ICT development. All these units havehands-on experience in applied research and the documentation of outcomes.

Upon completion of the sabbatical support program, faculty should find it eas-ier to establish applied research projects with community agencies at home.
