Changing Dynamics..
Many parts of the region remain Immune to the Change...
Asia: A Mixed Bag..
7-8 % growth- India, China and the changing Dynamics.. Uneven distribution of Change/growth: A challenge... ILRI’s regional strategy: responsive to the rapidly
changing Asia but also responsible for areas with less growth
Work on- - South-south collaborations (ICAR-CAAS) - Strengthening partnerships with NARs - Strategic site selections - Advocacy role
Partnerships in the Region..
National Systems Regional organisations Donors Other CG centres NGOs Universities Private sector Media
Partnerships in the Region..
National Systems Regional organisations Donors Other CG centres NGOs and other implementation partners Private sector Media
NGOs
Important implementation partners Presence, credibility, reach at grassroots level Role extending to research, extension, advocacy, project
implementation, market setup, scaling up
Key Questions/Challenges-
• Selection/discretion (India, 3.3 million NGOs)• Varied capacities• Accountability • National/Regional NGOs Vs. Local NGOs• Map of existing partners/NGOs• Leverage on networks/experience of other CG centres
Private Sector
Large corporations, value chain partners, industry associations, private research organisations
Changing trend and emphasis on PPP Examples- Nestle, CII, CAS, ICAR, BMGF-PPP Program
Nestle-China- 40,000 farmers suppliers per dayPakistan- 2000 villagesIndia- 100,000 farmers (2600 villages) 30,000 women
Value Additions, micro finance, vet. services, trainings, medical facilities,
Private Sector
Clear strategy on collaboration Working with Industry Associations (rather than/or in
addition to individual industry) Do we have the capcity? The know how? A private sector ‘cell’ at ILRI?
Media..
An important ‘marketing tool’ to make our presence felt in the region and for advocacy
Need for augmenting engagement Clear strategy/ guidelines Support from Nairobi/Addis Commitment from SA teams
Vision…
• Strengthened Partnerships (& not just collaborations)
• CRPs-Implementation & Impact• Policy/Advocacy• Linkages between the projects• Management Issues/HR
Decisions & Dilemmas..
Global priorities
Livestock Agenda
Donor Interest
Work that fits CRPs
Regional Priorities
ILRI Agenda
National Interest
Group-1Research Priorities For The Region/India….
• Apart from (and within the) areas we are working on, what research areas should we work on? Give reasons/explanation..
• Any potential donors, partners?
Group-2
Communication/Advocacy-How can we make ILRI more visible in the region? What products should we have?
Key Ingredient for Success…
TEAM…
Need for people working on ‘overarching’ issues, Working with partners, donor relationships, new
project/opportunities identification, advocacy, media relations, liaison with other CG centres, national governments, regional bodies, cross cutting/linking between regional projects ....
