SACRED HEART C A T H O L I C S C H O O L
Summer term —Issue 5 Friday 18th May 2018
LETTER FROM ASSISTANT HEADTEACHER
A prayer for our students at this time...
Lord, I know you are with me and love me. Give me peace of mind as I prepare for this time of study. Help me to focus on my books and notes, keep me from all distractions so that I will make the best use of this time that is available to me. Give me insight that I understand what I am revising , and help me to remember it in my examinations. Above all, I thank you for the ability to be able to study and for the many gifts and talents you have given me. Help me always to use them in such a way that they honour you and do justice to myself. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in thee.
We wish all our pupils peace, focus and strength throughout the examination period and look forward to celebrating their success on results day in August.
Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,
This week marks the start of the public examinations for our GCSE and A-Level students, and, although study leave has started, there is no respite for any of us. For our teachers, the hard work continues with last minute revision sessions to both calm and reassure the pupils of the exams to come. For our parents, the concern that our children are eating well to ensure that they have enough energy throughout the exam period and that they are able to provide the emotional support throughout this stressful time. For our pupils, that they have and are continuing to revise thoroughly and apply themselves in order to achieve their full potential.
Mrs A. Sparkes
The most outstanding individuals and institu-tions that the state and independent sector has to offer have been recognised in the shortlist for the 2018 Tes Schools Awards. It's been revealed that Mr S Cefai, Sacred Heart School, has been shortlisted for the Headteacher of the Year award. Tes editor Ann Mroz said: It is wonderful to see such innovative ideas and best-practice merg-ing from our schools and teachers, despite the current squeeze on funding. We had a record year for entries and the standard was the best so far – all those shortlisted should be very proud: it’s an extraordinary achievement. The winners will be revealed at a gala awards evening at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London on Friday 22 June 2018.
MR CEFAI HAS BEEN SHORTLISTED FOR HEADTEACHER OF THE YEAR
AWARD 2018!!!

Samples of ceramics work from Y9 TBC & Y11 Art and Edith in Year 13. Year 9 created plates inspired by ceramics
made by Picasso whilst he was living in the south of France – lots of fish!
Year 11 made plates inspired by nature for
their GCSE coursework. And Edith in Y13 made a piece inspired by
Henry Moore for her theme of ‘mother and child’.

Mr L Williams, Assistant Headteacher
Dr Mark Prince Biography Homeless at 15, drugs & alcohol became an intricate part of his life, two children by 21 and on the road to imprisonment after a life of criminal activity, Mark decided to make a drastic U turn, he began a late start in the sport of boxing which is considered one of the tough-est sports in the world. He trained hard, with focus and discipline and after a short and successful amateur career with 1 loss in 9 fights, beating some of Britain’s best amateurs in the process, he turned professional with Hall of Fame Promoter, Frank Warren in 1993. By 1997 he had become the number 1 light-heavyweight in Britain and World Boxing Organisation (WBO) No1 contender in the world by 1998 which earned him a shot at the world title. A terrible knee inju-ry in 2000 ended a promising career with 19 wins 1 loss 15 Knock-outs. In 2006 he suffered another tragedy, his 15-year-old son, a talented footballer on the books with Queens Park Rangers, was stabbed in the heart outside his school gates trying to peaceably break up a fight. Kiyan’s murder marked the beginning of a journey which began with him having to defeat anger and revenge, two of his toughest life opponents. He came out victorious, by using forgiveness and a com-mitment to use Kiyan's legacy to inspire, challenge and educate the youth embroiled in the downward spiral of urban violence. The Kiyan Prince foundation gives them a sense of purpose and direction in

Spring & Summer Term Debate Round Up
During the spring term, Sacred Heart hosted the Debate Mate UDL round 2; we were the only school to enter 6 teams into the competition all the way across years 7 - 10… and we could have entered more if we were allowed!! The event began in the Hall with a
reminder to pupils of the evening’s
format, allocation of teams and an inspi-
rational video to raise the atmosphere
and the excitement. The competition
kicked off with the prepared debate:
“This House Regrets the Demise of the High Street” This motion required 5 minute speeches and addressed some complicated issues and vocabulary!!

Spring & Summer Term Debate Round Up
After the announcement of the teams that would be competing against one another, pupils
went to assigned rooms to prepare and conduct their debate with independent judges
brought in from Debate Mate:
Year 10 and
Year 7 prepare
for the debate
Bunmi in Year 8 helps the
judge time keep. While
the Year 8 team take their
positions for the comp!
The evening was a great success with all teams winning at least one of their debates and certainly learning from the ones they lost!
A message from Debate Mate for Sacred Heart: “I just wanted to contact you to say thanks a lot for hosting UDL Round 2 on Tuesday. We managed to run a great competition and Sacred Heart were the most meticulous and wonderful hosts. The competition ran perfectly and we could not have done it if you and your students were not so hospitable. We appreciate this, thanks.
Please also extend our thanks to your Year 11 army of assistants, they were invaluable.”
Special thanks to the following Year 11 assistants: Precious Kristen Adama Courtney Leah

The Houses of Parliament! Accelerate UDL Round 2
Spring & Summer Term Debate Round Up
In March, Madam Hetherington and Madam Cawley took the Year 9 debate Accelerate team to the Houses of Parliament for the final Accelerate UDL.
We were lucky enough to have Peter Kyle, MP for Brighton and Hove, host the event. Mr Kyle gave the pupils some very supportive words, explained to them the importance of learning to debate and was even kind enough to take us all for a tour round the Houses of Parliament after the competition. From Debate Mate: “Peter Kyle really went the extra mile for us, and it made the afternoon feel pretty
unique. We've run many events in Parliament over the last few years and I've never had such access-all-
areas treatment!”
The motion: ‘This house would ban children form listening to violent music’
Debate Mate: “Thank you so much for bringing your students down to Parliament yesterday! It was a really smooth ride, and that's a testament to you and your students. Well done to the following Year 9 pupils: Eden, Victorina, Victoria and Danilla who all showed mas-sive improvement, dedication and excellent behaviour on the trip. The Sacred Heart team won both of their debates, making Sacred Heart very proud of each and every one of them. We hope they continue to debate next year.

Spring & Summer Term Debate Round Up
The debate team with Peter Kyle and then Margaret Thatcher!
Waiting for the
teams to be
called with mild
feelings of
anxiety and
Intimidation as
we all sat in this
prestigious
environment!
From Debate Mate: “The students represented themselves and your school extremely well, and I hope the experience of being there will begin to have an impact on their confidence and aspirations in the coming weeks and months.” …and finally: The Debate Mate academic year ended with a trip to the Docklands at ELU to compete in the
Debate Mate Cup. Sacred Heart took 22 pupils form across year 7 – 9, all of whom dedicated a great
deal of time and effort into preparing for the day. The motions for the day were ‘This House Would
allow more countries into the UN’ followed by ‘This House would allow construction companies to
build on land protected for conservation’. Both motions required some in depth knowledge and
were tricky for some of our pupils to completely understand, however, all who took part gave it
their best efforts and, of the four teams that we took to compete, all teams won at least one of their
debates so everyone came away successful.

R.E. DEPARTMENT
The Gideons International are a group dedicated to telling people about Jesus by providing Bibles and New Testaments. They are well known for their work with hotels and they have been regular visitors to Sacred Heart for many years. Therefore, it was an honour to welcome Andrew Hamm from the Gideons last week when he came to speak to Year 7 about the work of the organisation and to give every pu-pil a copy of the New Testament. Many of us still have our red Gideon Bible from our school days and, as Andrew reminded us, it is red because it needs to be read! “The Bible is not meant to be placed on a shelf, but to be in your hands, to read often…. Read with attention! Do not stay on the surface as if reading a comic book! Never just skim the Word of God!” Pope Francis Mr P Thompson
Andrew Hamm and Mr White (Head of Year 7) distribute Gideon New Testa-ments to Year 7
A single individual is enough for hope to exist, and that indi-vidual can be you, says His Holiness Pope Francis. In a hopeful message to people of all faiths, to those who
have power as well as those who don't, the spiritual leader provides illuminating commentary on the world as we currently find it and calls for equality, solidarity and tenderness to prevail. "Let us help each other, all together, to remember that the 'other' is not a statistic, or a number," he says. "We all need each other."
