Although the game of golf may look simple to someone watching it on TV, it isn’t. Golf is the following (mental, physical, strategy and patience) all working together so that you can hit a tiny white ball into a tiny hole. So even if many individuals are taking up golf, some beginners quit too soon out of frustration.

There are many obstacles to overcome, such as how to choose the best clubs, how to hold the club, the best way to swing without throwing out your back, and how to increase your skills with specific instruc-tional lessons.

As with any sport, good coaching is paramount and it is for this reason that I have to say that the on- course- golf-pro’s need to become more involved with their “customers”. I feel that they are often too busy organizing golf days or too involved with administrative operations and that their time would be better utilized assisting players.

It used to be like this many years ago but things seem to have changed, anyway that’s my opinion.

Thank you for your letter. Golf is indeed a challenging game as you have men-tioned and the golf industry itself has many obstacles to overcome if it wishes to grow successfully. I have to agree with you that there could be more interaction between the players and the on-course-pro’s. A few pointers here and there go a long way to improving ones game and also it enhances the overall experience at a golf club.

The pro should be out on the course, in-teracting with his “clients”, ensuring that they have a fantastic day out and that they will return time and again.

With golf’s inclusion in the 2016 and 2020 Olympics being seen as a means to grow the game

globally, the PGA’s of the world have agreed on a new framework to allow more volunteer coaches to work in golf.

The framework was discussed and agreed upon at the PGA World Alliance meeting held on the weekend before the Open Championship in St Andrews.This meeting takes place every 18 months and brings together the nine largest PGAs in the golf world, including the PGA of South Africa, which was represented by Chief Executive Ivano Ficalbi and Chair-man Paul Marks.

“The focus of this meeting was to finalise the coaching framework for golf that is required by the International Golf Fed-eration (IGF) and International Olympic Committee,” said Ficalbi.

“Golf’s inclusion in the Olympic Games will be a catalyst for the growth of the game around the world. This new coach-ing framework takes into account the role of the volunteer coach in the develop-ment of the game.”

“The rules of golf are clear on earning a liv-ing from the game, and a volunteer coach is an accepted part of this where the basic development of the game is required.”

An example of a volunteer coach in South Africa would be the current members of the PGA’s Grow Golf Association, whereby schoolteachers and South African Golf De-velopment Board (SAGDB) coaches are able to introduce young children to the game.

The PGA of South Africa also has a mandate from the Royal and Ancient (R&A) and PGA World Alliance to help facilitate the growth of the game and to upskill PGA profession-als throughout Africa, and this framework will form a vital part of this.

“It will assist the PGA of South Africa to grow the game into African countries whereby volunteer coaches can be trained to introduce the game to young children within their communities and PGA profes-sionals can then identify the talent and take them to the next level,” said Ficalbi.

The Coaching Framework has been ap-proved by the PGA World Alliance and adopted by the IGF in preparation for the Olympic Games in 2016 and 2020.

The PGA TOUR and Southern Company today recog-nized Ernie Els – a four-time major champion – as the recipient of the 2015 Payne Stewart Award. Els – who

is known for his off-the-course philanthropy, in particular his devotion to improving the lives of those with autism spectrum disorder as well as development of junior golf talent in his native South Africa – will be honored on Tuesday, Sept. 22, in conjunction with the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola in Atlanta. The ceremony will be televised live on Golf Channel as part of a GolfCentral special from 7-8 p.m. ET.

The Payne Stewart Award is presented annually to a profes-sional golfer who best exemplifies Stewart’s steadfast values of character, charity and sportsmanship. Stewart, an 11-time winner on the PGA TOUR and World Golf Hall of Fame member, died tragically the week of the TOUR Championship in 1999. Southern Company, the “Official Energy Company of the PGA TOUR and the Champions Tour,” was the TOUR Championship sponsor the year of Stewart’s passing. A year later, the PGA TOUR created the Payne Stewart Award in his honor, and Southern Company has supported the annual presentation since its inception.

2. What is your handicap? Golf is my handicap. Kidding, normally say max 32, so there are no expectations but 22 is realsitic.

3. HWhen did you start playing Golf? Only later in my life when I had to give up my hockey career.

4. Who got you into playing Golf? My friends and later my husband.

5. Who is your favourite women’s and mens golfer? It has to be Lee-Ann Pace and Gary Player. (‘The more I practise the luckier I get’ is one of my life mottos).

6. Where are you currently a member at? Nowhere at the moment, I play where and when I can but I never miss a game at The Somerset East golf club near my parents farm in the Eastern Cape, I consider it my home course.

7. Which is your favourite golf course in South Africa? Skukuza Golf Course, when I played there we had to wait for the elephants to move off the 3rd fairway before we could tee off. And on the 9th you have to hit over a water hole filled with hippos. I’m still saving for a round at Pezula. It’s on my bucket list.

8. What has been your most embarrassing moment on the golf course? Freshies and lots of them. Often you want to tonk that ball with all you’ve got and the slight lift of the head...equals FRESHIE!

9. What do you hope to achieve in the coming years? A consistant game with a decent drive.

10. Any superstitions? Nah, life to short. But when I make a birdie I always use the same ball at the next hole and suddenly it becomes a ‘lucky’ ball.

You can tell a lot about your set-up with the help of hanging a pendulum from you hands, down the back of your

putter. Builders have done this for centuries to straighten out their lines ;-) If your putter doesn’t sit symmetrically front on to your pendulum you have less chance of launching your ball on a good line. Some guys set their hands to far behind the ball creating too much loft in their launch angles, base or leading edge strikes can occur & left launches off the putter face. Other guys that forward press to much, getting their hands ahead of the ball, can get negative launch squeezing the ball into the turf (not ideal into the grain), tend to get more top edge strikes & right side launch lines. Zach Johnson has a bit of rearward tilt with his putter & less loft on it, while Phil Mickelson has forward tilt with more loft on his putters, plural! Try it sometime, make a home made pendulum, I don’t care if it’s your tea cup hanging at the bottom of the string, set or find your optimum shaft lean & club head loft, then you can start launching your ball on line more consistently :-) One last point on setting up with a pendulum is that it shows you where the bottom-out-point of your stroke is & this can help you find your optimum ball position. You want it just ahead of the bottom of your stroke for optimum launch & roll. It can even show you if you are leaning to much weight on your left leg or right side.

in this issue we focus on good rhythm in your putting stroke & how under-standing the dynamic of a pendulum can greatly improve your stroke...


When making a stroke front on with the pendulum, you will get some initial lag as you move the putter back but as you start swinging it back & through a couple of times you will start getting in sync with the motion of the ball. With the ball hanging from your hands this extends the base of your pendulum visually. Your arms being the pendulum of your stroke, whatever is attached to them, hands, swinging ball or putter should move in sync with them. If your hands are to loose or to mobile the swinging ball & putter will move about with less control & consistency. The job of your hands are to remain soft in pressure but firm enough to stabilize face & shaft angles through impact.



If you feel like a ‘spaz’ & can’t seem to get in sync, it’s probably because you are trying to hard to make the swinging ball move with your putter ;-) Rather get control of the swinging ball first, even without your putter at first, then combine the putter & let the putter follow the motion of the swinging ball. Start off small & then work your way up to bigger pendulums. Play around with it a little, once you start getting in sync with your pendulums you can upgrade them & reduce them at will with immense feel & control.

With good posture, weight dynamically balanced on the balls of your feet, take note of the pendulum hanging directly below your hands & shoulders pivot point. Everything moves in relation to this. Hands that are to much inside this line will create to much in-to-out path through impact & if your hands are ahead of this point it will create an arc that will cross the ball to the left. If you want to keep the pendulum on line, your shoulder line must remain square to the path you wish to keep it on, no hint of shoulder rotation left or right or else you will start creating figures of 8 back & through ;-) Probably one of the most important keys to great putting is squareness of shoulders to path with your hands hanging directly under them! Whatever is attached to them should move in unison with your shoulder/arm movement. Emphasis on the word should ;-) as for some of us there seems to be a little problem with the hands at times, hey!!?

Too many golfers focus on their hands in their stroke, numb-ing themselves out from their feel & confidence. I often hear guys telling me that they take back the putter with this hand, then take it through with the other, some putt great with their left hands only, back handing the ball down the green, others just feel it better with their right hand & some just can’t put them together. A sad affliction caused at some point by over thinking the natural & now trying to outthink the unnatural - Yip! :-( A stationary pendulum with just the use of the hands is not ideal. Notice how the arc of the stroke leaves the ground faster leading to missed strikes. An arms/shoulder stroke shallows out your arc ;-) A much better pendulum...

Always remember there is hope, there is a way. Surrender your fears, the doubt, the tension that you clutched onto in your old ways. Embrace your putter in a new way. Hold it with the gentleness of love & the firmness of fortitude. Find a way to get an uncoordinated dominant hand out of your stroke or even off the putter & then find your pendulum again. Remember, it’s okay to use your hands but only to keep the putter connected to them :-) The work in the stroke is done through your shoulders & arms, the bigger muscle groups that can control slower, finer muscle movement, especially under pressure situations ;-) Now that’s where we want it the most, let’s go find it & own the show...

Durbanville Primary wins Ernie’s ChampionshipDebutants Durbanville Primary School celebrated

a roaring eight stroke victory in the fifth Ernie Els Primary Schools Championship after denying Curro

Aurora repeat success at the Fish River Sun CC last month.

Ayden Senger (74), Louis Loubser (75) and Max Orgovanvyi (83) enjoyed a great opening partnership of 232 that put Durbanville Primary School in pole position in their first appearance at the premier annual junior team event.

Loubser returned a 76, Senger carded a 77 and Orgovanvyi posted another 83 for a final round 236 to secure victory on 468.

“We are so happy and so proud of the team,” said coach and team manager Lana Orgovanyi.

“We sat with Curro Aurora at dinner during the opening ceremony and the trophy was on the table. I pointed to the trophy and told the players that this is what we came to play for and it was up to them if we would take the trophy home.

“They all came to the party in a big way. Even when they struggled at times, they played with great determination and commitment and I am incredibly pleased for them.

Minnie marches to Africa Junior open victory

Sentanio Minnie held off a spirited challenge from

Gauteng North’s Dylan Mostert to claim his first national title with an eight stroke victory in the Africa Junior Open last month.

The 17-year-old Ekurhuleni junior shared the first round lead with Allan Lones after both players opened with 73s at the Fish River Sun CC, but he pulled two strokes clear of Lones with a second round 74.

“I thought it would be a two-horse race between Allan and me, but Dylan Mostert ended up providing the fireworks,” said Minnie, who kept control and closed with a 73 to win on four-over-par 220.

It felt really great to get that first big win after knocking so many times.

“This has given me a lot of confidence. After our matric prelims, I hope to carry this confidence into the Premier SA Inter-Provincial for my provincial team at my home club in September.

“Then I’m going to gun for back-to-back wins in the Joburg Junior Open in December.”

Lones closed with a 79 to finish second on 228, while Mo-stert signed off with a 77 to tie for third on 229 with Jacques Smit, who returned a 74.




Svensson denies De Lange at Boys Amateur

Sweden’s Marcus Svensson defeated South Africa’s Keegan De Lange 4&3 in the 36-hole final at Royal Birkdale to win the 89th Boys Amateur

Championship last month.

The 17-year-old from Halmstad GC became the second Swedish player in succession to win the title, following on from Oskar Bergqvist’s victory at Prest-wick in 2014.

De Lange from Pretoria CC, the first South African to reach the final of this prestigious international championship, opened with a double-bogey six, but Svensson took full advantage of the benign condi-tions at the historic links.

The South African dropped a further shot on the third hole to give Svensson the early lead, which the Swede never relinquish through to the conclusion of the match.

After a slow start, the left-handed De Lange made birdies at six and eight, but Svensson responded with gains at eight and 10 to turn 4-up.

The Swede took a five hole lead as De Lange strug-gled down the back nine. But after Svensson bogeyed 14, De Lange holed a 30-foot eagle putt on 15 cut the deficit to three holes.

Svensson bounced back with a birdie 17, though, to take a four hole lead into the last 18 holes.

It was the Swede’s turn to struggle and he dropped four shots against a lone birdie on the front nine.

De Lange closed the gap to two holes by the turn, but bogeyed the 28th hole to trail by three holes. He matched Svensson’s birdie at the 29th hole, but a duffed approach shot into a pot bunker on the 31st hole for a double bogey six.

This left Svensson four up with six to play, but De Lange kept the match alive by getting up-and-down from the edge of a greenside bunker on the 32nd to halve the hole.

Svensson matched De Lange’s par five at the 33rd hole, though, to secure a 4&3 win.A gentleman in defeat, the Gavan Levenson Academy player praised his opponent and paid tribute to the event and the six-time Open Championship venue.

“It was a bit of a struggle out there and I wasn’t play-ing my best golf, but I had an unbelievable week so I can’t be angry about that,” De Lange said.

“Marcus played really well and put the pressure on early in the game and kept it going. All in all, well played to Marcus, he deserved the win.

Just a few hours before Day clinched a start-to-finish victory in the PGA Championship to lift his first Major title, 21-year-old O’Reilly from Atlantic

Beach went wire-to-wire in Knysna to break through for his maiden national amateur victory in the South-ern Cape Open.

Impressively, O’Reilly shot four successive rounds of 67 at Knysna GC to match Day’s Major record-break-ing 20 under par total at Whistling Straits.

Like Day, O’Reilly’s victory was in no small part due to his resolve to get the job done.

“I’ve been close so many times and you start to won-der if it’s ever going to happen for you,” he said.

“I’ve had a lot of great rounds, but there was always the one round that killed my chances.

“My only aim this season has been to put myself in

contention with greater consistency and after I took the first round lead, my only goal was to finish in the top five.

“It’s a huge achievement for me to put together four solid rounds; the best reward for all the hard work that’s gone into the last six months with my coach, Paul McKenzie.

“It was unbelievable to finish in double digits after four solid sub-par rounds. What Jason did, was phe-nomenal, but I have to admit, I felt like a Major winner myself when I sunk the last putt.”

“We were treated to some amazing golf from Herman, Gerlou and Aubrey in the final round, but all credit goes to our 2015 champion, Carlo O’Reilly, who wrapped up a very well-deserved victory.”

international experience inspires telfer in George

Fresh from competing in back-to-back international championships in Sweden and Scotland, Kaleigh Telfer was untouchable as she carved out a 10

stroke victory in the Southern Cape Championship at George GC last month.

The 17-year-old Bryanston golfer opened with a six under 66 to pull two strokes clear of top ranked Ivanna Samu and fellow Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation member Zethu Myeki.

She stretched her lead to seven strokes with a second round 67, which included a career-first albatross at the par-five second, and closed with a 70 to seal her second provincial triumph this season on a winning total of 13-under-par 203.

Telfer’s victory vaulted her to second in the Womens Golf South Africa Senior Rankings and she credited the recent international trip for her success.

“It is going to sound really weird when I say this, but my mind-set was still in Europe,” Telfer said.

“The standard of the players who competed in the Annika Invitation Europe and the Girl’s British Open Amateur Championship was incredible high. You really had to step up your game to have any chance and I was still competing against them in my head when I teed off in George.”

Telfer finished joint 37th in Sweden and tied for fourth in the 36-Hole Stroke Play Qualifier to reach the Match Play stage of Girl’s British Open Amateur Championship in Scotland. She was eliminated in the second round, while Samu reached the semi-final at West Kilbride GC.

“Ivanna and I gained an incredible amount of experi-ence from the trip,” said Telfer.

“You get used to playing a certain game here at home, but even as early as the first round of the Annika Invita-tional Europe, we had to dig deeper. You are completely out of comfort zone, facing fierce competition on cours-es that are nothing like what we are used to.

“We had to think out of box to succeed and find re-serves we didn’t even know we had. We are both greatly indebted to Womens Golf South Africa for giving us the opportunity to compete in these world-class events. I think the pressure to perform brought out the best in us.”

Reigning Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur Stroke Play champion Samu, who also played bridesmaid to Telfer at the Free State and Northern Cape Open in April, protected her number one spot with another runner-up finish. She carded rounds of 68, 72 and 73 to finish on three under 213.

Myeki from Border climbed to fifth in the rankings with a third place finish in the recent Gauteng Stroke Play Championship. The West Bank golfer further closed the gap on fourth ranked Carrie Park with third overall on three over after rounds of 68, 68 and 73.

Boland junior Herman Loubser is savouring his return trip to the Reply Italian International Under-16 Championship next week after

winning the 2015 KwaZulu-Natal Amateur Champi-onship last month.

The 16-year-old Theewaterskloof golfer underlined his growing status as one of the South Africa’s rising stars when he eliminated Albert Venter 4 & 2 in the 36-hole final at Selborne CC.

The victory was his first on the South African Amateur Association’s Open Amateur provincial circuit and Loubser said the timing could not have been better.

His opponent’s casualties included Gavin Sole from KwaZulu-Natal (2 & 1), David McIntyre from Central Gauteng (2 & 1), fellow Gauteng North golfer Rein-

hardt Blaauw (3 & 2) and Southern Cape Open champion Carlo O’Reilly (2 & 1).“Albert claimed a huge scalp when he beat Gavin in the first round and he defeated some other to players on the way to the final, so I knew I was in for a tough match,” Loubser said.

“I nailed two 15-footers for birdies at 31 and 32 to lead 3-up and the match wrapped up at the 34th hole when Albert drove his tee shot out of bounds. It was a great battle of wills and I really enjoyed playing him in the final.”

South Africa’s Bertine Strauss moved one step closer to the LPGA Tour when she claimed the First Stage Qualifying School with a wire-to-wire victory in California last month.

The Koster golfer recorded rounds of 67, 67, 70 and 70 at the Dinah Shore and Arnold Palmer courses at Mission Hills GC in Rancho Mirage to triumph on 14-under-par 274.

“I feel relieved,” Strauss told the LPGA Tour media office after edg-ing out leading American amateur, Megan Khang, by one stroke for the medallist honour.

“This a good confidence builder for me for the rest of the year. This was the lowest four-day total I’ve ever shot, so it gives me the confidence to know what I am capable of.”

The former University of Texas ace will lead Khang and 58 other qualifiers in the Second Stage at the Plantation CC in Venice, Flori-da from 19-25 October.

It was a long time coming, but Jason Day, always one of the best but never the best in a major, seized his moment and never let go until the very

end at the 97th PGA Championship. The tears spilled out of him on the 18th green and as he spoke with reporters afterward, the emotions of a player who never gave up on himself even when things looked very, very bad.

After entering the final round with a two-shot lead over surging crowd favorite Jordan Spieth, Day birdied four of the first seven holes to maintain a comfortable cushion, then cruised home at Whis-tling Straits for his first major title. He signed for a 5-under 67 to beat playing partner Spieth (68) by three strokes, and Branden Grace (69) by five.

“I was trying to hold back the tears over the first putt,” Day said with the Wanamaker trophy sitting next to him in the winner’s unusually candid and emotional press conference. “And when I saw the putt go up to half a foot, I just couldn’t stop crying. It’s just a lot of hard work that I’ve been putting into this game to dedicate myself to have a shot at glory, have a shot at greatness.”

Day, shattered the tournament record for strokes under par, and easily bettered the winning scores at the previous PGAs at the Straits in 2010 (Martin Kaymer, 11 under) and 2004 (Vijay Singh, 8 under). His total also set a record for the most under par in a major championship, beating by one Tiger Woods’s total at the 2000 British Open at St. Andrews.

“I didn’t see close to 20 under par winning this tourna-ment,” said Rory McIlroy, who in his return from an ankle injury shot a final-round 69 to finish 9 under par and in 17th place, 11 strokes behind the winner.

Jason just made it look easy. He uncorked a massive drive on the par-5 11th hole that wound up 382 yards down the fairway, and when Spieth walked up and saw it he turned around and said, “Holy s---!” Day simply smiled and playfully flexed his biceps.“I knew I was going to be playing uphill from there,” Spieth said.

Day, 27, said before Sunday’s final round that he felt as if he was going to make every putt he looked at, and he played that way again under the gun. He took 27 putts while hitting 10 of 14 fairways and 13 greens in regulation.

Day’s victory came in the third straight major in which he had either led or shared the 54-hole lead, and was his third title on Tour so far in 2015. It also comes with a $1.8 million check, another reminder of just how far he’s come. That was what he was thinking of as he broke down crying even as he cleaned up his two-putt par at the 18th hole around dinnertime on the Sunday.

The son of Queensland meat workers, Day bought school clothes one year at St. Vincent de Paul—ev-erything he could cram in a bag for $5. He first hit balls at age 6, using a 3-wood his dad, Alvin, found on a trash heap, but he was preoccupied with other sports. That changed when Alvin died of stomach cancer. Jason, 12, started to drink. He got in fights. His mother sent the boy to a golf academy, which doubled as a boarding school, and Day connected with Col Swatton, the golf coach. They’ve been inseparable ever since, with Swatton serving as Day’s coach and caddie.

“He means the world to me,” Day said on the Sunday night.

Day spoke of his father’s death being the catalyst for the rest of his life, starting with his family scraping together enough money to get him out of his dead-end town. “My mom took a second mortgage out on the house,” Day said. “Borrowed money from my aunt and uncle, just to get me away from where I was to go to school, seven hours drive. I remember growing up, we—my mom, I mean—we were poor.” So poor that it wasn’t unusual for Jason to look outside

and see his mother cutting the lawn with a knife because the lawnmower was broken and they didn’t have the money to fix it. So poor that the family sometimes had to heat up kettles for hot showers.

Golf was his way out. He won the Queensland Amateur at 16 and a Web.com Tour event at 19, becoming the youngest to win a PGA Tour-sanc-tioned event—Day would rue his missed chances in the majors.

And it wasn’t just this summer. There was the tie for second at the 2011 Masters, and the solo second at the U.S. Open later that year. He lost much of 2012 to injuries, but finished in the top 10 at three of the four majors in 2013. He tied for fourth at the 2014 U.S. Open.

But on Sunday at Whistling Straights, the trophy was Day’s, and the emotion poured out of him. He and Swatton shared an emotional embrace on the green, and Day’s son Dash tapped him on the leg and hugged him next. There was wife Ellie and Day’s

longtime agent, Bud Martin. They’d stuck with him as Day’s mother and sisters stuck with him all those years ago when he was a lost soul.

“I knew today was going to be tough,” Day said after-ward, “But I didn’t realize how tough it was going to be.” In fact, he called Sunday’s final round, “probably the hardest round of golf I’ve ever had to play.”

It only made the reward that much sweeter.

Renowned South African rules official Theo Manyama attended the US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits thanks to support from the PGA of South Africa.

And with this he completed his own Grand Slam of having officiated at all of the four Majors. Manyama has now officiated at 16 Masters, nine US Opens, 19 Open Championships, and one PGA Championship.

And he says he has been overwhelmed by the support he has received from the South African golf community.

“I’ve had so many South African golfers and caddies coming up to me and congratulating me, and telling me that I’ve made them proud. Gary Player is the only South African golfer who has won the Grand Slam. And I am very proud that I am the only South African rules official with a Grand Slam in officiating. I can honestly say this is the highlight of my career as a rules official.”

American golfer Brian Harman made two holes-in-one in his final round at The Bar-clays, which was won by Jason Day.

Harman aced the par-three third hole and the par-three 14th at the Plainfield Country Club, New Jersey.The 28-year-old world number 78 is the third PGA Tour player to make two holes-in-one in the same round.

Harman said: “It’s pretty crazy to play a hundred-some-odd tournaments and never have one, but

to have two in the same tournament is pretty awesome.”

Amateur Bill Whedon at the 1955 Insurance City Open and Japan’s Yusaku Miyazato at the 2006 Reno-Tahoe Open are the only other players to sign for two aces at an official PGA Tour event.

Harman shot a two-under final round of 68 to finish at two under par - 17 shots behind Day, who finished six strokes clear of the field.

For the filling

450g Salmon, pan-fried, flaked in to chunks

1 Camembert cheese round, thinly sliced into strips

1 bunch Spring Onions, finely chopped

3 large Eggs

250 ml Cream

salt and freshly Ground Black Pepper

Loosely but evenly, scatter the salm-on chunks, cheese slices and spring onion across the chilled pastry base.

Lightly beat the eggs and cream together, and season generously before pouring this over the filling.

Bake for 40 minutes.

1. Combine these ingredients in a food processor until a firm ball of dough forms. Using your fingertips, pat it out into a 23 cm diameter tart plate.

Uit die joggie se “bek”

Ek is nou bietjie verveeld en lus vir ‘n uitdag-ing of twee. Ek was vier weke lank opi sak

en daarna het Greg Hermon weer oorgeneem vir ses weke wat beteken het ek was nou vir ses weke by die huis by my gesin. Gelukkig is dit nou weer my beurt wat gaan insluit die FedEx Cup uitspeel wedstryde asook die Presidents Beker in Korea.

Greg en Louis het ‘n baie goeie tyd saam gehad wat ingesluit het ‘n tweede plek in die Britse Ope by St Andrews – en dit na ‘n tawwe uit-speelstryd. As ek sou sê dat ek nie bietjie jaloers was dat Greg by die Britse Ope gedra het nie, dan sou ek blatant lieg. Ek was immers daar toe Louis dit in 2010 gewen het – nie as sy joggie nie, maar as sy vriend. En ek weet hoe Louis dit altyd geniet om op St Andrews te speel, so ek

het geweet hy staan ‘n baie goeie kans om dit weer te wen en dit was darem baie amper!

Ek het maar droëbek by die huis gesit en elke hou op televisie gevolg. Was darem nie heelte-mal droëbek nie want toe die spanning so hoog raak moes ek maar ‘n ietsie of twee vat vir die senuwees. Ek het na die tyd met Greg gesels en hy was dit eens dat dit van die beste gholf was wat hy Louis nog sien speel het in die tyd wat hy nou opi sak is vir Louis. Soos Greg sê besef min persone dat toe Louis die Maandagmid-dag afslaan (die slegte weer het mos gemaak dat hulle die laaste rondte na die Maandag moes uitstel) was hy reeds 3 houe agter die voorlopers wat vroeër reeds afgeslaan het. Die weer was ook teen daardie slegter met reën en ‘n sterk dwarswind wat oor die gholfbaan

Wanneer ek so ‘n tydjie by die huis is en kwalite-it tyd saam met die familie spandeer is dit ook tyd vir ‘n bietjie motorfiets ry, jag, braai en lekker kuier saam met vriende. Maar ek weet daardie Ping gholfsak is ongelooflik swaar, veral nadat jy so ‘n bietjie afgelê het. So ek het vir my ‘n gim-nasium by my huis ingerig sodat ek ook sterk, fiks en reg kan wees wanneer ek weer by Greg oorneem vir die volgende 6 weke. ‘n Joggie se week op toer is nogal besig en jy loop baie kilometers met ‘n gholfsak van meer as 30kg op jou rug. So ons moet fiks en gemotiveerd wees want wanneer dit moeilik gaan met jou speler moet jy kalm en uitgerus voorkom. Jy kan nie blaas-blaas by jou speler aankom en onvoorbereid wees vir die volgende hou nie. Enige top speler, soos Louis ook, verwag dat sy joggie(s) reg voorbereid en fiks by ‘n toernooi opdaag sodat hy die kans het om ook sy beste te lewer met die nodige ondersteuning van sy joggie. Die dae van sommer net die gholfsak dra is lankal verby en dit vat ‘n professionele benadering om opi sak te bly.

Nouja, ek dink ons almal en ek kan seker baie Suid Afrikaners daarby insluit, was baie teleurg-esteld toe dit nie so uitgewerk het dat Louis weer die trofee kon vashou nie. Maar dat Louis besig is om ‘n baie goeie jaar te geniet is nou nie allermins nie. Eers 19de in die Meesters toernooi by Augusta, toe 2de in die Amerikaanse Ope, weer 2de in die Britse Ope en toe 30ste in die PGA toernooi. Huidiglik (einde Augustus) nr 13 op die wêreldranglys, 3de in die Race to Dubai en 28ste op die FedEx Beker ranglys. Wanneer iemand ‘n toernooi wen is daar maar altyd ‘n bi-etjie geluk ook by betrokke. Die bal wat net reg spring of ‘n abnormale lang set wat gesink word of ‘n plofskoot wat direk in die blikkie gaan. So as dit ook gedurende die volgende paar maande met Louis gebeur, is sy volgende wen daar. Hy speel ongelooflik goed, sy setwerk is nou weer uitstekend en hy is lus om ‘n toernooi te wen, so al die tekens is daar dat dit binnekort weer kan gebeur.


Louis beplan om aan die einde van die jaar by Leopard Creek en Sun City te speel en dit sal heerlik wees om opi sak te wees wanneer hy voor sy tuisskare gholf speel. Jou land bly jou land en dit bly lekker om te hoor hoe die skare jou speler aanmoedig – in Afrikaans!

Plans for the second course began in 1994. Daysen, De Villiers and Van de Merwe were commissioned to design the Championship Course directly south of the existing course on Estate 1. Course Two was opened at the end of ’97 and is undulating and different from Course One, with indigenous bush in places and its share of imposing water hazards. This course has its own small club house over-looking the Pani Dam where fish eagles can be spotted. The design philosophy adopted by the golf course archi-tects was a course that is challenging, but fair – where a serious golfer could test his skills but an occasional golfer could enjoy the game.

There are four special holes that constitute the course’s “Amen Corner” from the 13th to 16th. The 13th’s tough uphill Par 4 tee spot must be kept right of the large tree in the middle of the fairway. The second shot to a very nar-row green. Holes 14 to 16 are where water hazards come into play. The first one is a par 5 with water guarding the green, followed by a par 3 across water, and a par 4 where a dam must be carried to reach the fairway. These 3 holes normally are the deciding holes in club championships.

Two memorable holes are the eighth and ninth, running alongside the Pani Dam to complete the front nine. Water guards the left side of the holes, and indigenous bush the right, so make sure that you’re accurate from the tee.

In April of this year maintenance of the golf course was handed over to Matkovich Golf Course Maintenance and Mike Wallington, who already looks after Durban Country Club, Beachwood, San Lameer and Cotswold Downs and has in a short time improved the conditioning of the two courses substantially. The Country Club is currently in the more than capable hands of Desirée Stone who previously worked at Centurion, Copperleaf and Wingate before relocating to Durban.

The PGA Tour announced changes to the format of the Presidents Cup last month, revisions that will go into effect with the matches later this

year in South Korea.

The total number of matches will be reduced from 34 to 30, which remains slightly higher than the 28 matches contested at the Ryder Cup. While in previous years there were six four-ball and six foursomes matches across the first two days of the Presidents Cup – meaning each player on the 12-man rosters had to play both days – there will now be five matches per day. Saturday’s schedule will include four four-ball and four foursomes matches, as opposed to five matches per session, followed by 12 singles matches on Sunday.

An additional change was made to match scoring, as matches that are tied after 18 holes will now be declared a draw, with half-points awarded.

Each player from both the U.S. and International sides will be required to participate in two of the first four sessions, a reduction from the previous rule that required players to participate in three of the first four sessions.

“I think just looking at the record of the Presidents Cup, we’re 1-9-1. I think all of us on the team feel that a points change would really make it more exciting and more competitive,” Price said earlier this month.

“That’s the only reason that people say, well, it’s because you want to win. I think win, lose or draw, we all want to see it come down to the final match on Sunday instead of being done with eight matches left on the golf course on Sunday. That’s a big deal.”

The Presidents Cup will be held Oct. 8-11 at Jack Nicklaus Golf Course Korea in Incheon, South Korea.

1. Where were you born and which schools did you attend?Born in Durban, attended Clifton Prep School and DHS.

2. You played in four test matches, opening the batting against Australia in 1969/70. South Africa won that home series 4-0 and you scored 508 runs at an average of 72.57, what stands out most in your memory about that series? Sadly, that it was my last.

3. You bowled John Gleeson in Australia’s second innings of the first test. An opening batsman taking a wicket? That must have been special. A blind squirrel gets an acorn every now and again.

4. You played for Hampshire for many years where you forged a formidable opening partnership with West Indian Gordon Greenidge. The West Indies had such great players in that era and in par-

ticular an abundance of fast bowlers who could tear a team apart. Do you think that the modern game is perhaps becoming too dominated by the bat?Yes, rules, boundaries and bats have seen to that.

5. Who was the best bowler that you ever faced?The conditions varied. I played on uncovered wickets, so somebody like Derek Underwood was very difficult on a wet wicket.

6. You were hugely successful in the Currie Cup which is today known as the Sunfoil Series, just how strong was the level of domestic cricket at that time? Yes, it was very strong because we had no Test cricket so Natal vs Transvaal was a test match.

7. What is your opinion on the third umpire, should technology be embraced in full or would it be best to let the on-field umpires have full control of the game? I think it’s very good but its work in progress.

Dawie van der Walt will compete on the PGA Tour in 2016, a feat he achieved by finishing third on the Web.com Tour’s Money List this season.

The two-time European Tour winner, who also claimed the 2013 Sunshine Tour Order of Merit, wrapped up a stellar season on the American feeder tour with a share of 26th at the Portland Open last month.

While his result at that event was nothing to write home about, he had produced the goods earlier in the year, firstly with a victory at the season-opening Chile Classic in March.

That week Van der Walt carded rounds of 64, 66, 68, 65 to clinch his maiden title on the Web.com Tour and then backed up the result with a share of ninth at the Louisiana Open a week later, solidifying his status as a contender on tour.

He continued to add good results over the next three months, including a share of sixth at the Air Capital

His day would come at the Price Cutter Charity Cham-pionship in August, where he finished the week on 23-under-par and sealed his second win of the year.

The victory placed Van Der Walt firmly within the top five on the Web.com Tour Money List and effectively guaranteed his playing privileges for the PGA Tour.

He took to social media to express his happiness.

“All the travel bags, hotels, and seemingly endless lonely nights on the road, when all you want to do is hold the people you are playing for, wash away on days like these. Today I fulfilled a dream and got my PGA Tour card. Missed birthdays, weddings, and years of sweat, struggle, and sacrifice went into reaching this goal. Thank you to all my friends and family, and most of all my girls BJ, Allie, and Mia for supporting me – I couldn’t have done it without you,” he wrote on Facebook.

An optometrist is a medical professional who is qualified to examine vision, provide guidance for good eye care and supply you with a copy of a new or updated prescription for spectacles and/or contact lenses. In South Africa, in order for an optometrist to meet national standards and be recognised as a qualified professional, they need to be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Although not compulsory, if an optometrist is listed with the South African Optometric Association (SAOA) this means they are recognised and noteworthy practitioners who value a strict and professional conduct in optometry.

If your optometrist diagnoses vision problems, he or she should prescribe optical lenses that will improve your eyesight. The eyewear you select will however play a big role in how well you see and how comfortable you will be while performing daily tasks.
