Look in the dictionary under “Safety.” There should

be a picture of a Volvo. The S60 is all about safety.

Everything – engine, steering, brakes, suspension,

even details like a rear fog lamp and optional

headlamp washers and wipers that improve vision –

is functionally integrated to improve safety. It all works

together to give you the tools to avoid an accident.

But if an accident is unavoidable, Volvo has a Plan B.

The body of the vehicle is designed to help protect

Should an S60 be struck from behind, the front seat backrest and head

restraint move backwards in parallel while the occupant’s head and

upper torso are evenly, firmly and uniformly supported. The backrest is

designed to then tip backwards to help prevent the damaging forward

whiplash movement.

Volvo’s Whiplash Protection Seating System (WHIPS)

represents an extraordinary automotive safety design

advancement. This system, unique to Volvo, is designed

to provide markedly better protection from neck and

back injuries in the event of a rear impact.

Based on exhaustive study of body geometry and accident

dynamics, WHIPS is designed to diffuse the violent energy

transfer resulting from a rear impact that often produces

serious neck and back trauma.

Since introducing the three-point seat belt almost

40 years ago, Volvo has consistently advanced the

cause of automotive safety design with technological

breakthroughs and patented concepts. The Inflatable

Side Curtain (IC) represents another in this proud

line of achievements.

IC widens the scope of Volvo’s patented Side

Impact Protection System (SIPS) technology to new

levels of personal occupant protection. This third

stage of the SIPS concept is designed to provide

increased protection from head injuries for front

and back seat door-side occupants.

In a side impact, IC, in 25 thousandths of a second,

inflates a protective curtain that extends from the

windshield pillar to the rear pillar. This protective curtain

has been shown to absorb as much as 75% of the

energy exerted by the head when it is thrown to the side.

IC offers an additional benefit beyond helping

to protect the head area from an impact. It also reduces

the risk of an occupant being partially thrown out through

a side window. IC, together with the SIPS structural

protection and SIPS Air Bags, represents what may be

the most comprehensive side impact protection of any

production automobile in the world.

A. The remote, keyless 2-step central

locking system features a rolling code that

makes it impossible for thieves

to copy. The key fob includes a trunk

release, Approach Lighting button, and

alarm with panic button.

B. With Volvo’s Approach Lighting, side

mirror lights, interior lamps and parking

lights come on automatically with the

remote control and illuminate your entry

into the car.

C. A flip of the high beam lever and Volvo’s

Home Safe Lighting will leave

the headlights on for an additional

thirty seconds as you find your way safely

to your front door.

In hundreds of practicalapplications, we have reduced or eliminated theuse of harmful substances in every phase of themanufacturing process and have placed similarrequirements on our suppliers.

Restrictions on Hazardous Chemicals.

We have drawn up a black list of chemicalcompounds that have been eliminated fromproduction and a grey list of compounds that areto be avoided and that, in many cases, are alreadybeing phased out. These lists, which include suchsubstances as CFCs and asbestos, apply both atVolvo and among our suppliers. We have alsoachieved a drastic reduction in the use of PVC. We use waterborne paints in order to minimizethe emissions of solvents.

Made for Recycling.

All new Volvo models contain certain recycledmaterials. To facilitate recycling, all plasticcomponents that weigh more than 1.76 oz. (50 g)are labeled according to international standards.

The ECRIS (Environmental Car Recycling inScandinavia) research project concluded in May1998 after four years of work. Based on theexperience gathered from the project, Volvo isnow making recycling an integral part of theproduct development process. The Volvo Cars’strategy for recycling-friendly design is based onfour main elements. These are, in order of priority:to avoid the use of hazardous materials andsubstances; to facilitate the drainage anddismantling of environmentally hazardousmaterials; to minimize the resources used inproduction; and to design components so as tofacilitate material recycling.

A Holistic Approach.

In our product development, we use a highlysophisticated system, EPS (Environmental PriorityStrategies), in product design, which has beenprimarily developed by Volvo, the SwedishEnvironmental Research Institute and ChalmersUniversity of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden.This is a computerized life-cycle assessment toolthat shows how a certain component affects theenvironment throughout its entire life cycle, fromraw materials extraction through manufacture and use, to waste disposal.

In Volvo cars, an effective catalytic convertereliminates up to 95% of the carbon monoxide,hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides in the engineexhaust emissions, compared with uncontrolledlevels. Official tests conducted in accordance
