Entry to the course Entry is at the discretion of the school but you would normally have achieved National 3 English or be secure in most aspects of Level 3. Course Outline The structure of the course does not differ hugely from what you have been used to in S1-S3 in that you will study a range of texts in various genres. As well as studying writer’s craft, you will improve your close reading skills and vocabulary. You will also work to improve your writing in various genres and develop your ability to communicate well through talk and listening. I other words, you will continue to build on your skills in Reading, Writing, Listening and Talking. The course has three compulsory units plus an Added Value Unit that assesses your ability to apply what you have learnt to work you do on your own. Units Unit 1 – English: Analysis and Evaluation (6 SCQF credit points) In this unit you will be assessed on:

• Close Reading

• Listening You will also do critical essays on texts as part of your coursework. Unit 2 – English: Creation and Production (6 SCQF credit points) On completion of this unit you will be assessed on:

You will work on this mainly at home but there will be points at which you will do progress checks etc. in class. Assessment There is continuous assessment throughout the course. Items of work might include:

• reading or listening to texts

• a talk

• written work It is very important that you work hard to pass all thecontinuous assessment. You must pass all units plus the Added Value Unit to achieve that National 4 award. Progression If you complete the course successfully, it may lead to National 5.

English National 5

Why English? English is a compulsory subject because your ability to communicate well in spoken and written English is very important in a wide variety of contexts. You must develop skills in listening, talking, reading and writing which are essential for learning, life and work. The skills that you develop in English are useful in a wide range of careers; these include teaching, editorial, journalism, administration, legal work or in the arts. Entry to the course Entry is at the discretion of the school but you would normally have achieved National 4 English in S4 or be “secure” in most aspects of Level 4 by then end of S3. Course Outline The structure of the course does not differ hugely from what you have been used to in S1-S3 in that, in addition to Talk and Listening, you will study a range of texts in various genres. As well as studying writer’s craft, you will improve your close reading skills and vocabulary. You will also work to improve your writing in various genres. In other words, you will continue to build on your skills in Reading, Writing, Listening and Talking. The course has two compulsory internally assessed units. (Internal assessment means it is assessed in school using criteria which are produced by SQA and used nationally.) The units are the same as those for National 4 but you will have to produce a higher standard of work. Units Unit 1 – Analysis and Evaluation (9 SCQF credit points)

• You will also be internally assessed on Talking about different topics at various points throughout the course.

Added Value Unit: English Assessment (6 SCQF credit points) While the Added Value Unit at National 4 is marked by internal assessment, in the case of National 5, it is all the work which is sent away to SQA for external assessment i.e. Markers appointed by SQA. On completion if this unit you will:
