- Follow the “star in its rising” … In following the Light of God’s promise, we come to know the beauty of God’s love; we receive and reflect “the light that the darkness does not overcome.”
The beauty of each snowflake reminds us of the unique ways God’s light enters our lives. For you, it might be in a word of love spoken, a gesture of compassion. It might be the presence of a friend, the birth of a child, a simple sign of healing or hope,…or simply the opening of a new day.
Remember how you marveled at each snowflake that fell as a child, …how you wanted to taste and the capture its beauty. Remember the joy of gathering snowflakes into snow sculptures and snow forts, …or the joy of making snow angels. Somehow we too easily forget the delight of standing in the light of God’s creation, especially when we shiver in the cold. Yet God is near. God’s light shines, even in the darkness.
In the dark of winter and in the storms of life, God’s covenant Love never fails. Within each of us is the unique pattern of God’s creating love. Epiphany, the season of the revealing of Jesus as Light to the world, is a time in which we remember the journey of the magi …the revealing of Christ as Savior of all nations. It is a time in which we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus, his anointing to “to bring good news to the poor,” …to lift up the brokenhearted and “bring release to the captives.” In celebrating the Baptism of Jesus as Son of God, we remember our own Holy Baptism, how we enter into the life, death and resurrection of Christ Jesus. Within the light of Christ, we are united with all who come to the light, together bearing witness to God’s love as the Son shines through our unique and humble lives.
The message of God’s revealing love gives us hope and vision to carry Christ’s light into the world. Each in our own way, we can reflect the light of Christ. Together, we can build communities of grace and advocate for the justice revealed in God’s way of righteousness and love. Together, when acting in Christ’s way of love, we can reflect the light that overcomes the darkness.
Tensions may rise in a world divided by loyalties and defining attitudes. Within the politic and struggles of daily life, it may seem there is little to light our way through the shadows of darkness. Yet Christ has come, giving light and strength to heal the wounds of the world. Be led by the star …by the Light of Christ in its eternal rising.
Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.Whoever follows me will have the light of life.”
In Christ, Pastor Sue

-- Adult Sunday school-----Joy BurnsWe are grateful for the generous donors of such wonderful winter wear for my class’ gifts to both Salem Lutheran church’s outreach ministry and children at Burton Academy. I’d guess about 200 items (hats, gloves, scarves, mittens and winter coats) were collected and many were beautifully handmade knit works of art! Winter came early and it has been a cold one—bodies and hearts were warmed with these gifts. Thanks for being a part of faith in action!
Looking back-----In July of 2013, our adult SS class coordinated a baked good sale and used book sale at ORL. It was fun, a lot of work, and was blessed with eager workers and paying “customers” and was well attended. This event provided us with ~$400 profit to be used toward adult Christian education funds to purchase materials—videos series and bible study units for our Sunday classes. With careful planning and good stewardship, also using free materials available to us through the “Living Lutheran” magazine….and other sources I have found on- line….we benefited for 7 years with seed money from that fundraiser. I informed my class there is $2.00 left in that fund. I’d encourage members to designate adult Christian educ if they’d like to make a financial donation…perhaps honor a birthday or make a thank- offering in tribute or memory of someone. Our class will direct some of our free- will offerings toward it. Every modest donation can help us rebuild a fund to purchase educational materials. Several of the recent video series I’ve presented (program authors: Adam Hamilton and Max Lucado) could be offered in an evening if persons are
interested. These series have been well received by the Sunday morning class members.
In January, we will begin some short bible studies and as always you are welcome to drop in and join the group. We donated $75.00 toward ELCA World Hunger in December for the matching pledge effort. Our class also gave children who attended ORL’s Christmas eve worship a small Christmas craft and treat.

share the joy of music during Advent.
