“Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light upon my path” -Ps. 119:105

We might reflect on life as a journey… more a maze than a puzzle to be solved. Life has its twists. It can be frustrating, frightening, and challenging. At times we may wonder where we are headed and if there is any pattern that leads us anywhere. At times we might feel lost. God’s Word comforts and guides us along the way, urging us to walk in prayer, in trust and in faithful attention to what is within and around us. For centuries Christians have used an ancient maze called a LABYRINTH to practice that way of learning to walk life’s path, one step at a time, trusting that the path God paves will lead us where we need to be.

In walking the path of a labyrinth, or tracing it with your fingers, we discover there are no dead ends. Indeed, as it is used in the Christian tradition, the Cross is often its starting point and its focal point. Often patterns begin with the Cross or lead to the Cross in the center. Used as a spiritual exercise, walking the path creates a heightened awareness of the human condition and of God’s guiding presence.

Our worship and music committee is hoping to offer you the opportunity to practice this form of meditation at designated hours between June 24th and July 12th. The pattern will be laid out in the fellowship hall with someone to guide you as you begin the journey. It is a structured experience designed to celebrate life, a way to learn more about ourselves and our relationship to God and to others. In its most basic use, you are invited to walk the labyrinth while mindful of your life… For example, envision your life’s goal, walk toward that goal and see what you learn; pay attention to sights and sounds; notice how and when you might feel lost ..and how you found your way; reflect on your past experiences, your present experience, and what you hope for. Reflect as you walk. Several aids will be available for your reflection as you walk. - Walk at your own pace and in your own attitude. It can be a walk of joy, a walk of sadness, a walk of curiosity, a walk of wonder. “Walk in the Way of the Lord” Pastor Sue Lidums

( For those not able to walk the labyrinth, table-top finger labyrinths will be set up.)

2019 Assembly

Report“Faith”

-“the assurance of things hoped for; the conviction of

things unseen.“ Heb. 11-1.Our five voting members gathered with the synod on May 17-18. David Fredrickson…I wish to express my gratitude to be one of the voting members at the SEMI Synod Assembly. It raised my awareness of what the synod contributes to the church at a higher level. It gave me a better understanding of how our benevolence funds are used. There were some wonderful messages of what some people went through to realize their faith in God. We also learned how well the Rise Up campaign is going. It was a very enjoyable experience for me.

Terry Christenson – My experience as a synod assembly voting member was very interesting. We voted for new Synod council leadership and adopted the upcoming fiscal year budget. Four resolutions were adopted. We voted to update wording in the Synod’s welcome statement to include language that would allow full diversity and inclusion. We adopted a provision to the 2020 Minimum Compensation Guideline to extend the current 4 week Family/Parental Leave for men to participate in family roles associated

with home, care giving, parenting and nurturing to 8 weeks. The third resolution adopted encourages congregations to regularly pray for migrant minors on Thursday mornings when members of the synod are with minors in the Immigration court and for congregations to become Welcoming Congregations to welcome and pray for migrant children and their families. The forth resolution directed the Synod to explicitly renounce sexism and sexual misconduct in all its forms, to create safe spaces for survivors to be heard and believed without fear of recrimination and to update protocols for reporting incidents of sexual misconduct and to make available these protocols for congregational use on the Synod website. Three memorials were adapted to forward Synod action to the 2019 ELCA Church wide Assembly. The first memorial is to request Bishop Eaton on behalf of the assembly to contact appropriate U.S. governmental officials to address issues of mistreatment and right violations of Palestinian children. The second memorial called for increased accountability in cases of sexual misconduct. The third memorial is to request Bishop Eaton, Synods and congregations to petition the President and Legislators to restore funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the near East and to amend or repeal the Anti-Terrorism Clarification Act of 2018 to remove barriers to future humanitarian aid funding to Palestinian Authority. Throughout the assembly meetings we were treated to Faith talk presentations from:

1. Deacon Sue Rothmeyer – serves as Executive Administer in the Office of the Secretary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in American

Page 4: s3.amazonaws.com  · Web viewBurton, MI 48509 (810) 742-3780; orl4040@att.net. 2019. . ... Service of Word & PrayerJune 19th- Holy Communion June 26th- Service of Word & Prayer “Your

2. Pastor Elizabeth Friedman – pastor at Lord of Light Lutheran Church and Lutheran Campus Ministry at the University of Michigan.

3. Pastor Manisha Dostert – grew up as a Jain and was baptized in the Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod at the age of twenty-six.

4. Dr Ryan Cumming – is the program director for hunger education with ELCA World Hunger.

Their faith journeys were inspiring. We also heard reports from Partner Ministry organizations.

1. Living Water Ministries – Provided statistics on campership at Stony Creek camp. 2018 saw a 9% growth in participation over 2017. The participation from ELCA and Episcopal congregations had not changed much and participation from partner organizations grew by 33.5%. The Living Water Ministries board has also been working on building renovations and modernizing of facilities.

2. Trinity Lutheran Seminary – We were given statistics that outlined the need to encourage people to follow a call to lead congregations. We were urged to pray for future clergy and help with financial donations to be able to provide scholarships.

3. Mission Investment Fund – Provides financial support for expanding a congregation’s capacity for ministry.

4. Bishop Donald Kreiss’s report to the assembly provided information to help members understand what the Synod’s Ministry involves, What the Synod is,

what the Synod does and how the Synod manages to do all that it does. Bishop Kreiss highlighted the “Rise Up” campaign goals and LEAD training events. Another topic Bishop Kreiss shared was pastoral leadership. In Southeast Michigan 68 of our 109 congregations are served by a full-time-seminary-educated Lutheran pastor. The remaining congregations are being served by less than full time pastors, transitional pastors, retired pastors, rostered deacons and Lay Ministers.

The assembly finished with an inspiring worship service. Thank you. Terry Christenson..Maikayla Josling - This past weekend I attended my third SEMI synod assembly. As always, I had a wonderful time gathered in worship with people from around 109 other congregations and learning more about the business of the church as a whole. The guest speakers were phenomenal this year and often brought tears to my eyes with their stories of faith. This year, I really started to understand our importance in the synod. We as a church have a goal for community outreach and that’s wonderful, but it’s also local. Each church is different in its goals for spreading God’s love and our involvement is just one arm in this body of Christ. The synod helps to spread this mission and this love all over, not only in southeast Michigan, but the world. Every year I gain more love for our church and understand more and more why I am in this faith.

Synod Workshop – “Council Governance” .

There may still be time to sign up for the June 1st workshop that will be held from 9 am – noon at Transfiguration Lutheran Church in Fenton. Several from our council will be attending. See Pastor for registration and details.

Thank You for your generous support… $2,176 raised through our 40 days of Lent Faith Build! This will pay for counter tops and cabinets at the Calkins house. We are arranging a day near the end of June when we can help to install them. THANK YOU to Thrivent Financial for supporting the Sunday celebration and to the social ministry team for hosting and setting up the display. It was great fun to see how building a house helps to build a community.

On Sunday, June 23 the Worship and Music Committee is hosting a pot luck and movie right after the worship service. The movie is only 45 minutes long and features the life of Fanny Crosby, a blind songwriter, poet, and mission

worker who lived during the 19th century. She was one of the most prolific hymnodists in history, writing more than 8,000 hymns and gospel songs, including “Blessed Assurance”, “Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior”, and “To God Be the Glory.” Ms. Crosby was also the first woman to address Congress, on the behalf of the disabled, and she considered her blindness to be a blessing in serving others. Everyone is invited to bring a dish to pass, enjoy fellowship, and learn about Fanny Crosby’s inspiring life of faith, music, and service on June 23.

“Resolved” at the SEMI synod assembly – “that this Assembly encourages congregations to regularly pray for migrant minors and encourage congregational members to pray for them on Thursday mornings when members of the synod are with minors in the Immigration Court” - Mark your calendars for each Thursday and join brothers and sisters in prayer.
