From the RectorSeptember 2016

Dear Friends,

As always, the September NET is packed with useful guidance about our fall pro-grams—and what the Lord is doing at Galilee Church! *Please note that on September 11th, the early service will move from 7:45 to 8 AM.

Thank you to all who helped with Vacation Bible School! See inside for photos of the wonderful week we had. Year after year, our parish family comes together and blesses the children by sharing with them about our Lord, and doing it in a fun way! Huge thanks to Lillie Tillar, our Children’s Ministry Director, who coordinates and executes this giant event each year!

Many of you will notice that Carol Thomson, who has served as the clergy secretary for the past two years, is no longer behind her desk. But we are happy to report that she’s still at Galilee! Carol has moved down to Galilee Montessori, where she will be a teaching assistant in one of our Primary Classes (pre-K and Kindergarten). We’ll miss her upstairs, but are glad she’ll be a blessing downstairs.

Grace and peace to you,

Father Buchanan +

Galilee's Author Corner

By Fr. Buchanan

Galilee has a large number of published parishioners, whose

interests cover a wide range. In this Net, we want to share with you about some of their publications (apolo-gies to anyone we’ve missed—but we’ll look forward to covering you in a future edition!) I’ve read (al-most) all of these texts, and warm-ly commend them to you for your nightstand. I offer below only the barest sketch of each author—but encourage you to read their work for yourself!

The most recent publication is by Vic-toria Kelly, a member of about five years: Mrs. Houdini. In this novel, Vic-toria deftly spins the tale of Houdini’s efforts to speak with his wife beyond the grave—and the telling of the tale unfolds both a romance and a mystery.

Another recent publication is by Dr. Terry Lindvall: God Mocks (A Histo-ry of Religious Satire from the Hebrew Prophets to Stephen Colbert). Terry ma-jors in humor, and also authored Sur-prised by Laughter, where he explores the humor in the world of C.S. Lewis.

Jodie Berndt has published several books, most recently Praying the Scrip-tures for your Teens, which follows on her successful book Praying the Scrip-tures for Your Children. Upcoming for publication is Praying the Scriptures for your Adult Children: Trusting God with the Ones You Love.

J o d i e h a s a l s o co-published with parishioner Dee Oli-ver, The Undertaker’s Wife, a biography of Dee and Johnny Oli-ver’s journey to mar-riage and the journey Dee took after John-ny’s death.

Page 5: s3.amazonaws.com...Terry LindvallGod Mocks (A Histo: - ry of Religious Satire from the Hebrew Prophets to Stephen Colbert). Terry ma-jors in humor, and also authored - Sur prised by

Susan Lea, who grew up at Galilee and is daughter of Page and Connie Lea, has her first book for publication this fall: Fantastic Forgeries, Paint Like Van Gogh. From the description on Ama-zon.com: Fantastic Forgeries is a simple course in the artist's legendary skills, so readers can learn his innovative tech-niques and then adapt and apply those techniques to their own renditions and drawings. Available in November.

Fr. Nigel Mumford, priest associate at Galilee has published several books on healing prayer. His most recent book Dying to Live tells about his brushes with death, and his visions of heaven.

Anne Ferrell Tata published a narra-tive about a lonely mom and how God can work in and through our deepest mid-life crises.

Jimmy and Shep Jordan grew up at Galilee when it was on the oceanfront and have an enduring love for the his-tory and place of the oceanfront at Vir-ginia Beach. Gone but Not Forgotten is a wonderful read about the personalities and institutions that have graced the oceanfront over the decades.

John Kohler has produced a well-re-garded text on bipolar disorder. It has been a gift and a blessing to many.

Emily Slingluff has published several books on raising chil-dren, without using punishment. She has recently been able to promote her ap-proach on public ra-dio.

L i s a R o b e r t s o n authored a reflection on the four Sundays of Advent and their meaning. Every year at Galilee we use this wonderful book to ex-plain Advent—and many families in the parish use it for their evening family devotions.

Jean Vinson has a personal ministry of produc-ing books for the third world that assist public health workers in teaching people about health concerns. The books are written in the native languages of those for whom the books are in-tended, and use abundant pictures to convey the information. Her books made a significant difference in helping raise awareness in Africa during the Ebola outbreak several years ago. She has also produced books that help to share the message of the gospel.

From the Warden

ROMANS 6:14 (NIV) “For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.”

Last month, we focused on gifts of grace, and the effects of grace.

When we attempt to define grace, though, we tend to think in terms of acts….being nice to one another, giving of ourselves, and, perhaps of the sinful things we avoid doing. But grace is deeper than this. Grace really isn’t “doing” – it is a more like a state of being. Being in relationship with God. Being filled with the Holy Spirit. Being in healthy relationships with all around us. The acts we perform (or don’t) are the outward manifestations of the inner grace we have received.

The non-believer will tell us that be-ing nice, generous, forgiving, unself-ish, caring, humble, and wise does not depend on God – that one is fully ca-pable of living such a life without any god.

Maybe so. But we know better. We know better because to live without God, without Jesus, is to live with the burden of sin and no means of abat-ing its inescapable effects from our lives. The non-believer’s logic is root-ed in the notion that “acts make the man.” Many live in this faux-grace world, content to ignore sin and its blinding effects. I know this to be true, because it is exactly how I lived much of my early adult life. I knew good from evil, and I chose to ignore God. I lived this way until those clos-est to me saw the real me – the part I

chose to ignore and could no longer hide. The effects of sin in my life be-gan, or perhaps continued, to take a recognizable toll on me and others.

Thankfully, I found grace….you know where, and in whom, the Liv-ing God! And if you want to see real tears of joy, seek me out during one of Rob Sweitzer’s renditions of “Amazing Grace.” My journey was not all that different than John Newton’s. I have been confounded by the expression, “there can be no peace without jus-tice.” Really? There can be no peace, or justice, for that matter, without GRACE.

So, the next Sunday that you are in church and exchange the peace….exchange the grace of God in your heart, and you will know His peace.

ROMANS 11:6 (NIV) “And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no lon-ger be grace.”

Richard Corner, Junior Warden

Nominations for Vestry Membership

In order to present a talented slate of vestry nominees for our 2017

vestry elections, we need to be-gin the process now of identifying parishioners who would be good candidates for nomination. To suc-cessfully reach the objective of pre-senting 8 skilled and qualified nom-inees, the participation of the entire Galilee family is needed and en-couraged. In past years, the Vestry Nomination Committee has been comprised of the 4 outgoing vestry members (those members whose 3-year term is expiring); however, this year we are supplementing the vestry team with 4 at-large mem-bers from the general congregation to hopefully provide more access to and knowledge of parishioners who might serve well on the vestry and to simply have more voices and broader participation in the selec-tion process. The members of this year’s Vestry Nomination Commit-tee are Polly Altizer, Richard Corner, Sally Kitchin and Deborah Brady (4 retiring vestry members); and Tony Zontini, Lee Lesley, Dail Dekker and Becky Mason (4 at-large members.) All parishioners are encouraged to submit candidates for vestry nomi-nations by contacting any member of the committee with your candi-date’s name (this can be another pa-rishioner or yourself); it would also be helpful to provide a brief summa-ry of the value that your candidate would bring to the vestry. If you want to talk with your candidate be-fore submitting his/her name, that can be useful but is not required.

When the list of submitted candi-dates is complete, the qualifications of each individual will be verified. To qualify for vestry membership, the nominee should:• Be a member of Galilee Church

and at least 18 years old• Be a confirmed and participat-

ing communicant• Possess a record of giving (finan-

cial, as well as time and talent)

We want this to be a project of the entire congregation, so please prayerfully consider nominations and participate in the process. Look around you during worship services at those in the pews and those who provide volunteer service, consider leaders and members of ministries in which you participate, recognize parishioners who willingly serve on committees and support church events, or identify perhaps a gentle Galilean who contributes in a quiet way – there are numerous places to search! We truly want to hear from you – preferably before the slate of 8 nominees is finalized. The win-dow for submitting candidates for nomination will be open through October 3, so please talk with one or more of your committee members before then. After that time, we will be busy considering each candidate, checking qualifications, presenting the committee’s work to the vestry, talking with proposed nominees, and finalizing the slate. An effective vestry needs the willingness, talents, commitment and ideas of varied in-dividuals who are representative of our large Galilee family. If you are asked to run for vestry membership, please consider serving God and Galilee through this ministry. It truly is a rewarding experience.

Peace and grace,Deborah Brady

FALL GROUPSSTUDYGUIDE:

Good news! It was good news not only of Jesus' birth but of what he offered to men, women and children throughout his ministry. To the sick he offered healing. To the hurting, comfort. To the outcast, acceptance. In this study guide Ada Lum leads you to discover that this message of hope and joy is for you as well! This LifeGuide Bible Study in IVP's re-vised format features questions for starting group discussions and for meeting God in personal reflection, as well as a new "Now or Later" sec-tion following each session to help you act on what you learn.

Spring Israel Trip

For years people told me that as a Christian, and a priest, I ought to visit Israel. It took me 17 years to get there--but having been twice I can confirm that the positive influence on

my faith (and my understanding of the Bible) has been profound and significant.

Our next parish trip to Israel is planned (roughly) from 19 April-29 April, 2017. Among the many sites we'll visit are: the Dead Sea, the Temple in Jerusalem, the Jordan River, Bethlehem, and the multitude of sites around the Sea of Galilee (the sermon on the mount, the feeding of the five thousand, Capernaum, etc.). The anticipated cost for the trip will be around $4,600.

Interested parishioners should contact Father Buchanan directly. (There is room for 40, but we already have 10 parishioners from Good Shepherd in Norfolk who are interested in join-ing us.) [email protected]

Middle School Camp

One of the largest factors of students who follow Jesus throughout college into adulthood is building habits of being in Christian fellowship. Every Sunday Night: Middle School: 4:30-6:00pm High School 6:30-8:00pm Confirmation To find out more about how to have your student confirmed, contact Marty today.

What Happened here in August?

Late July and August has been packed full of events, camps, and fun. I am real-ly proud of our high school and middle school students who helped out at Vaca-tion Bible School this year. They were incredible at serving the children and it looked like they had fun as well. Getting to see smaller kids being mentored by older kids being mentored by older kids is truly a blessing getting to see the church in action. During youth group we have spent a lot of time at the beach playing in the waves and hanging out. We have talked about how God is great and powerful yet knows us each by name and how God is our shepherd and we need to learn to follow him. We love the youth and appreciate your prayers as we approach the fall and excited to see what God is going to do.

Marty O’Rourke —Director of Student Ministries

We had a blast at the Student Life Camp in Ridgecrest, North Carolina. There were fun games like knocker ball (pictured with Luke below) to floating a river. We did have tons of fun, but even more importantly our students got to worship with 500 peers, see a powerful drama on how we have doubts and flaws yet still a Christian, and finally got to hear the Gospel. We had a couple of students dedicate their lives to the Lord!
