Leaf piles attract pests

Lions Club looking for talented young musicians

Brandermill-Midlothian-Woodlake (BMW), Bon Air-Manchester-Midlothian (BAMM) and James River Lions clubs are looking for gifted young musicians, both vocal and instrumental, interested in competing for a scholarship to further their musical education. The local round of the Bland Music Scholarship Competition has been scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 18 at Brandermill Church on Millridge Pkwy., Brandermill. A program to benefit and assist youth, the Lions of Virginia Bland Music Scholarship Foundation Inc. promotes cultural and educational opportunities for high school age musically talented youth in Virginia. This progressive competition culminates at the Virginia Lions State Convention in May after twelve finalists have been chosen. Up to $18,000 will be awarded to the finalists. The scholarships must be used for college tuition, music lessons, summer music programs or other music education endeavors. The scholarship is named after James Bland, a popular African-American composer in the late 1800s. To register go to- http://www.bmw-lions.org/bmw-bland.html

According to a September 27, 2017 article by Modern Pest Services, many pests see a pile of leaves as a welcoming place to call home. Everything from ants to earwigs, and snakes to rodents will cuddle up in accumulated leaves; also known as “conducive conditions” which make it the perfect place to hunker down for winter. Unfortunately, these little critters may eventually see YOUR home as desirable real estate and decide to move in uninvited. In addition to unsightly conditions, the possibility of these unpleasant guests is motivation to remove leaves from your property. With that in mind, the previously p u b l i s h e d l e a f m a n a g e m e n t guidelines bear repeating as the season progresses in Brandermill. • Refrain from blowing or raking leaves onto Open Space, neighboring yards, over rear fences, into drop inlets, or into the street…BCA maintenance staff and/or contractors will NOT remove or pick up these leaves and homeowners may receive a Violation for unsightly conditions or Open Space Dumping. • You may see the BCA maintenance staff using the leaf truck to remove leaves from the street. They WILL NOT remove leaves which have been left in the street intentionally and they are not considered part of the Leaf Collection Program. • Bagged leaves may not be stored on lawns in sight of the road or neighboring properties, except on your scheduled Leaf Collection day, as arranged. They should be collected and removed promptly. Please refer to Residential Design Standards 11.1.1 (d, e) regarding the appearance of yards and landscaping. With everyone’s cooperation, the residents of Brandermill can enjoy the beauty of the season and avoid possible unwanted “visits” from the local pest population.

The Brandermill History Project committee has been working for five years with a mission of preserving the unique history of Brandermill. Collecting and compiling and organizing the information came first. Donations of historical materials have been made, early residents and developers have been interviewed, photographs were gathered and eventually developing into a history book with a fascinating story to tell. The story begins with a lake and two men, a timberland owner and an environmentally conscious developer, envisioning a resort-like community for year round living. This planned community opened to buyers in 1974, survived two energy crises, shaky economic downturns, and high interest periods that bankrupted most American planned communities at the time. With stamina and perseverance, the project continued over two decades and resulted in an award-winning community with environmental design concepts way ahead of its time. The community is invited to a reception at the Brandermill Country Club on Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. to hear author, Mary Miley Theobald, speak about her experiences in writing the book; Dick Guthrie, founder of the History Project, will express his passion for seeing the project through to completion and how it all got started; and Tom Jacobson talk about the very unique design elements for creating a resort in a suburban community. Books will be available for purchase. The author will be available to personally sign books. Beautifully illustrated, this book will be a perfect holiday gift for current and former Brandermill residents. To order Brandermill, The Natural Place to Be, use the order form on page 3.
