    Homework 1

Health and safety Safety in the Workshop

    1. Look at the drawing below; write a list of all the safety clothing and other precautions

the young person should take before working in the school workshop.

    2. List the eight

most important safety precautions that should be followed in a school

    workshop.

    Homework 2

    Safety Sign

    1. Design a sign to be displayed on either the wall of the workshop, in a specific area or

on a machine in the workshop. The sign must warn readers of a safety rule, risk or

precaution they must take. Dont forget to label where this sign would be displayed

and use colour in your design to make it more effective.

All signs should be a minimum of 100mm square.

    2. Where would you want this sign displayed and why?

    The Environment - Resources

Thinking about the environment when designing products

is becoming more and more importantant. Many things

are made out of timber, which is a renewable resource.

Using the internet, family or friends, or the library, find out the following.

    1. What is a renewable resource and why are these better for the environment?

    2. Give an example of a renewable resource?

    3. What is a finite (non-renewable) resource?

    4. Give an example of a finite resource?

Market Research for the Nightlight project

There are some very important things to consider before you start designing any product.

    These are:

Who is the product for? This is called your target market.

What is the age range of your target market? Eg.3-5 years.

Who will actually buy the product?

Is there a need for the product? There is no point in designing and making

    something that nobody wants!

Are there any special features that your target market will look for? Maybe it needs

    to be educational?

How much would the target market pay for the product?

What themes/designs interest your target market, and therefore will encourage them

    to buy your product?

Are there any colours which may be particularly appealing?

    1. You need to write a questionnaire which will help you find the answers to these

questions, which will in turn help you to design a successful product. Remember,

multiple choice questions are often used in questionnaires.

You must write at least 6 questions. Question 1 has been done for you.

Q1. What age range do you think a nightlight is suitable for?

    0-2 years 3-4 years 5-6 years

    ll llll lll

    2. Once it is written you will need to take it away and ask the questions to 10 different

people. Try to ask a big range of people (different ages, male and female) to make

    the answers more useful

Representing Your Answers & Drawing Conclusions

There is no point in carrying out a questionnaire unless you use the information that you

have gathered. It is usually easier to understand information if it represented in a graph.

    1. You need to put the information you have gathered for each question into a graph,

and explain what it tells you. Excel is a good piece of software that can be used to

    represent information graphically.

Again, question 1 has been done for you.

    30% Age 0-2 years

    Age 3-4 years

    Age 5-6 years

From my questionnaireI have learned that themajority of people thinkthat the nightlight issuitable for 3-4 yearolds. Because of this Iwill ensure that the

graphics I design areappealing to this agerange.

    1. What age do you think a nightlight is

    suitable for?

    Packaging Research

Collect a small piece of packaging such as a

chocolate bar wrapper or a label from a tincan. Stick it into your jotter. Clearlylabel 10different

pieces of information that are contained on it.

Circle with colour the information that you think must be on the packaging by law.

    Existing Product Research

When you are designing a product it is important to look at existing products that you can

buy at the moment. This can give you ideas about what you will need to include in your

    own product.

In your jotter sketch the front and the back of the packaging of a game you have at home.

Label the important pieces of information, for example; price, name, bar code.
