COMPELLING CONVERSATIONS: HEALTH CARE PHILANTHROPY TODAY

The Changing Business of Health care in Canada with Nicholas Offord

As governments across the country attempt to develop new models of health care service delivery, the core constructs of the health care system are being challenged. Big changes are happening and they have big implications for health care philanthropy . This session will look at the core dynamics of health care reform, policy and philanthropy, exploring system design and funding models, project planning, community relations, public engagement, and the potential role of the private sector. What aspects of these changes do we need to understand and manage? Which issues will drive us forward, and which will put our programs at risk?

In this workshop, presenter and president of the Offord Group, Nicholas Offord, will share experiences from a prestigious career directing the fundraising efforts of some of Canada’s most philanthropically successful institutions. Prior to the creation of the Offord Group in 2005, Nicholas spent 10 years as president of Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation, where he led the hospital’s landmark Best Medicine Campaign raising over $250 million . MIND THE GAP: HOW TO BRIDGE THE DIVIDE BETWEEN ANNUAL & MAJOR GIFT DONORSMid-level giving has long been considered an area of opportunity for charitable organizations. And yet, few have managed to maximize on the opportunity. Attracting mid-level gifts is not simply a matter of asking donors to give more . If it were that simple, there would be countless examples of successful mid-level giving programs . For most organizations, they have large numbers of donors at the bottom of the their giving pyramid who give through the annual fund and a cadre of donors at the top who make major gifts…and few, if any, donors in between. As a result, smart organizations are turning their attention to this overlooked group and creating formalized mid-level or Bridge DonorTM Programs that focus on growing the number of donors in the gift space between annual and major gifts. Join the presenters as they share the latest information and thinking on mid-level giving and how to create a sustainable program to attract this type of support.

TRANSFORMING SALVATION: MAKING THE CASE FOR MEDICAL RESEARCHRaising funds for medical research is often viewed as being a greater challenge

than generating support for clinical care . Whereas clinical programs deliver immediate benefits to patients, medical research offers a sometimes vague future promise that can be hard to articulate, harder to grasp and even harder to fund. This session will focus on effective strategies from SickKids Foundation to optimize fundraising efforts for medical research. Session participants will learn how SickKids actively shapes research priorities with the hospital before they are brought to market, and also learn the key principles of structuring the research case that have supported SickKids Foundation’s last three years of successive record-breaking results of raising $100+ million.

FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERSAre your goals getting larger and your resources getting tighter? Is your staff feeling stretched too thinly? Do you feel like you continually have to balance every aspect of your development shop? You’re not alone . This session is designed to demonstrate how to prioritize the needs placed on your development office, how to look at the multiple opportunities you face and decide where to focus your limited time and resources. Over the past 18 years, Jay Bucher has grown the Lancaster General Hospital’s development program into a well-run, highly productive program of annual, major and planned giving, special events, and grant writing, and even managing multiple successful capital campaigns – all while facing limited budgets amidst the challenges of rural Pennsylvania’s economy .

LET’S JUST SAY IT: YOUR BOARD COULD BE BETTER You already know an engaged board of directors significantly enhances the performance of a philanthropy program . Yet, most development executives admit their board is just not cutting it. That’s why it’s time for a change. Leave with the tools and inspiration to take your board from acceptable to unstoppable.

HOW TO ENGAGE PHYSICIANS AS CHAMPIONS FOR PHILANTHROPYWe know that patients give back because of gratitude for the care received at our hospitals . Yet, engaging physicians to partner with development to identify and introduce grateful patients has always proven difficult. With the release of the Final Rule on HIPAA, physicians can now be more engaged than ever in our work. Are you maximizing your opportunity for partnership? This session will demonstrate how Georgia Regents Medical Center built a physician engagement program that has identified, recruited and trained more than 50 physicians to be champions in philanthropy, resulting in more grateful patient referrals, more gifts and more dollars raised.

GRATEFUL PATIENTSGrateful patients have long been considered a primary source of philanthropy for hospitals and academic medical centers; virtually all have some form of a grateful patient program. While budgetary and other considerations may dictate each institution’s approach, the end goal remains: gift revenue, both short and long-term . NYU Langone Medical Center has developed a program providing both short and long-term successes .

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME… FOR FUNDRAISING IN THE FUTUREThere’s a dramatic change happening in health care. Policy, reimbursement and consumer preference are all shifting from the acute care setting in favor of home health and community-based care. This presents an unprecedented opportunity for stand-alone home health care and hospice organizations, as well as hospitals and health care systems with their own programs, to enhance the fundraising approaches around these models of care . SYSTEM-WIDE BACKROOM SUPPORT: BUILD OR BUY?The decision to provide system-wide “backroom support” to multiple development programs makes eminent sense. Yet the implementation of that support is fraught with a universe of unintended consequences . The design of organizational structure and work-flow presents certain challenges; however the deepest challenges surround the complexities of human nature, different organizational cultures and disparate expectations. This program explores the lessons learned over two decades by a seventy-foundation system that is spread over twenty states and all four time zones. THE FOCUSED LEADER: MANAGING YOUR TIME AND ATTENTION @ THE SPEED OF THOUGHT!Have you ever heard yourself or a colleague say—“I was so busy all day, but I don’t think I got anything done!”? Do you painstakingly linger over emails, trying to answer each one before you can actually start working? How many times have you started a task, only to lose track of it in order to take a call, respond to an email or answer a text? The amount of distractions we have in today’s high-tech world is overwhelming, and the result is what time management expert Pam Vaccaro calls “Focus Deficit Disorder.” In this program you will learn the qualities of a Focused Leader: how to establish focus on your priorities; implementing a process for a focused day; and maintaining focus in your communication, emails, meetings, and even in balancing your life. Also, learn seven ways to say “no” and still feel like a decent development professional!

GETTING TO TORONTO Toronto lies on the shore of Lake Ontario, the easternmost of the Great Lakes . Home to more than four million people, the greater Toronto area is the cultural, entertainment and financial capital of the nation.

AIR: With more than 65 airlines operating out of Pearson International Airport (YYZ), Toronto is directly accessible from many cities around the world. If you are coming from Boston, Burlington, Chicago, Halifax, Montréal, New York, Ottawa, Québec City or Windsor, you may consider coming through Porter Airlines which arrives at Toronto City Centre Airport (YTZ).

RAIL: Toronto is served by VIA Rail, which provides connections to many Canadian cities. It is also connected to the Amtrak system through Niagara Falls, N .Y . If you travel by rail, you will arrive at Union Station, located six blocks/one-half mile from the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel .

TRAVEL DOCUMENT REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTRY INTO CANADA (U.S. and international attendees)

Canada has one of the most advanced customs processes in the world to provide visitors with security and ease of travel . Visitors must have valid travel documents to enter Canada to provide proof of their citizenship. Document requirements vary depending on the country you are travelling from .

U.S. RESIDENTS—VALID PASSPORT REQUIREDAmerican visitors travelling to Canada require a valid passport to re-enter the United States. For more information on travel security and border procedures, visit the U .S . Department of State . www .state .gov/travel .

INTERNATIONAL VISITORSSome attendees may be required to obtain a temporary resident visa (TRV) prior to entering Canada. For specific information on travel documents required to visit Canada from countries other than the U .S ., please refer to www .cic .gc .ca .

Please be sure to obtain all travel documents and any necessary visas well in advance of the conference, but no later than the end of August 2013 to avoid any last-minute problems that may arise.

TRANSPORTATION FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE SHERATON CENTRE TORONTOTwo easy ways of getting from Pearson International Airport to the conference hotel.

1. Taxi: By far the fastest, but also the most expensive: fixed fare, about CAD55, tax included, but excluding tip. Major credit cards are accepted . The trip will take 20-30 minutes (possibly more if travelling during peak times). You have the option of “limos” and “taxis.” A taxi is recommended; the limos are more expensive with only a marginal upgrade in car quality not worth the extra price.

2. Airport Express Bus: Airport Express is a private bus company offering door-to-door service to/from many downtown hotels—including the Sheraton Centre—directly to/from the airport . Service departs every 30 minutes, starting from 05:00 and ending at 23:00 . Fare is CAD26 .50 . Visit www.torontoairportexpress.com for reservations and more detailed information.

DRESS CODEDress code is business casual. Please note that air conditioning in the hotel can be cool, so we recommend bringing a jacket or light sweater to sessions .

toronto: the destinationwww .seetorontonow .com

Toronto’s most iconic attraction is the CN Tower, the tallest free-standing structure in the western hemisphere and it now includes EdgeWalk, a thrilling hands-free walk on an outside ledge of the tower .

Visitors who want to be closer to the ground can take the scenic ferry ride to the Toronto Island, which provides a great photo opportunity of the skyline . Bike, picnic and explore the Centre Island amusement park, Centreville .

Great picnic fare can be discovered at The St. Lawrence Market, ranked by National Geographic as the world’s best food market . Try the famous peameal bacon sandwich at Carousel Bakery. Nearby, you can spend the afternoon at the Hockey Hall of Fame and get your picture taken with the Stanley Cup .

The Eaton Centre is one of Canada’s favorite places to shop . With over 200 retailers in fashion, furniture and electronics, the selection here is unbeatable. A short walk or streetcar ride from The Eaton Centre is Chinatown . It’s one of three Chinatowns in the city and borders on Kensington Market, a bohemian mix of vintage shops, funky restaurants, cafes and bars in addition to Latin American markets and food stalls.

The Distillery District is another one of Toronto’s most vibrant neighborhoods. It was Toronto’s first distillery, which produced almost half of Ontario’s total spirit production in 1871, and is now home to high-end boutiques, art galleries and restaurants . You can take a tour here or may be lucky enough to see a movie or TV show being filmed on location.

Toronto is also chock-full of family friendly activities that are educational and fun. The Ontario Science Centre offers hundreds of interactive exhibits; the Toronto Zoo showcases over 5,000 animals including gorillas and polar bears; the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) is Canada’s largest museum of world cultures and natural history; kids can unleash their own Harry Potter in North America’s only castle, Casa Loma; and for thrills, chills and spills Canada’s Wonderland is a park featuring over 69 rides and a 20-acre water park .

Thanks to top-level “Panda Diplomacy” (a joint Chinese-Canadian conservation project), the breeding duo arrives this spring for an extended stay. And what will happen if the city’s most-talked-about couple produces a baby? Pure “panda-monium.”

Mesopotamia at the ROM: Go waaay back in time and explore Mesopotamia at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). Discover the origins of writing, law and mathematics, as well as the earliest settlements from 10,000 BC. (June 22, 2013 to January 5, 2014.)
