A Message from the Editor

As heralded in my last and earlier messages, the promised redesign is here and l hope

it will gain your approval. As earlier editors, who have had occasion will undoubtedly testify, one always approaches such epochal occasions with a degree of trepidation.

Apart from its introductory role, this issue is, as

usual, the Meetings issue. The Announcements section is dominated by information about the Annual Meeting in Waterloo, which is supplemented by several inserts: the Registration Form for the Meeting; information and registration forms for Residence Accommodation; and, information, registration forms for Excursions, and a map of the campus. Up-to date versions of all of this information continues to be available at the SSC Web site at http://mast.queensu.cal- ssc/.

Last August, among other things, l suggested that that we set up a 'Statistics Watch' group, whose principal responsibility would have been to monitor and comment, on behalf of the Society, on the use and misuse of statistics in the public arena, and to administer a system of bouquets and brickbats for the best and worst statistics 'presentation' in the media. Much as l would have loved to announce such an initiative, l cannot. However, as a very modest and limited first step in this direction, l am pleased to introduce, hopefully as a regular feature: "Without Comment" • «Sans Commentaire». Tel qu'annoncé dans mes messages précédents, voici enfin venu le moment de vous

présenter un bulletin Liaison tout rajeuni, en espérant qu'il saura gagner votre faveur. Les rédacteurs précédents qui ont vécu des circonstances analogues pourraient sans doute témoigner qu'il est impensable d'approcher d'un moment aussi crucial sans aucune inquiétude.

Ce numéro de Liaison, présenté pour la première fois dans sa toute nouvelle version, est réservé, comme toujours à cette époque, presqu'exclusivement aux différents congrès. La majeure partie de la section «Annonces» est donc consacrée au dossier d'information du congrès de Waterloo auquel ont été ajoutés différents encarts: le formulaire d'inscription au congrès, le formulaire de réservation pour l'hébergement en résidence, un formulaire d'inscription aux activités touristiques proposées lors du congrès, ansi qu'une carte du campus. . Toutes ces informations, continuellement mises à jour, restent toujours disponibles sur le site Internet de la SSC : http://mast.queensu.cal-ssc/.

En août dernier, j'avais suggéré <<la création d'un groupe de surveillance statistique dont la responsabilité principale serait d'examiner et de commenter, au nom de la Société, les rapports statistiques de toutes sortes présentés au grand public. Ce groupe pourrait aussi gérer un système d'envois de fleurs (ou de pots) pour les meilleures (ou les pires) "présentations statistiques" dans les média». J'aurais bien aimé être en mesure d'annoncer que ma suggestion était en voie de réalisation, mais ce n'est pas le cas. Toutefois, en guise de premier pas fort modeste dans ce sens, j'ai le plaisir d'implanter une nouvelle rubrique dans ce numéro : "Without Comment" • «Sans commentaire». I1idée m'en est venue à la lecture de l'article de William (Bill) R. Knight, de l'Université du Nouveau-Brunswick. Cet

ular brief item entitled "Oyote Without Comment"which consisted of a quotation from sorne other publication or from sorne public figure, the utter ridiculousness of which was apparently lost upon the source of the quote. l am happy to accept Bill's suggestion that we commence including a feature in Liaison with a similar title, to which readers are invited to contribute. The contribution should of course have a quantitative orientation, and should basically consist of statistical howlers from the press, and possibly from the electronic media.

In addition to our usual News about Members, we are featuring an item called "Members in the News". l would look forward to seeing something like this more than merely occasionally, so please bend your efforts.

article m'a rappelé qu'on pouvait lire dans le New Yorker Magazine, il y a plusieurs années de cela, une rubrique intitulée "Qyote Without Comment" où apparaissait une citation tirée du discours d'un homme public ou d'une autre publication et dont l'absurdité semblait échapper totalement à l'auteur. J'ai accepté avec plaisir l'idée de Bill d'une rubrique semblable dans Liaison et j'invite les lecteurs à y collaborer. Cette contribution doit néanmoins avoir une saveur «quantitative» et s'inspirer principalement des bourdes statistiques trouvées dans la presse ou les média électroniques.

Une nouvelle rubrique intitulée « Les membres font les nouvelles» s'ajoute aux «Nouvelles» des membres. J'espère recevoir fréquemment des nouvelles des membres qui font les nouvelles .. . Alors, ouvrez l'oeil, je vous prie.

Publ ic Relations Report

The Bilingualism Committee of the SSC has recommended a variety of approaches

to increase communication in both languages at our Annual Meetings. In 1995, a special Task Force headed by Marc Moore prepared a fully bilingual program. As well, presenters were asked to have both languages on their transparencies/slides, and these dual language materials were easy to follow.

Talk materials are frequently not finalized with sufficient lead time for outside translation to be feasible. Shortly, there will be a short French/English glossary of Statistical terms available from the Permanent Office for speakers this year. The translation of key words will facilitate communication.

The Careers in Statistics poster has had sorne more exciting contributions that will be useful to help illustrate to early undergraduates and high school students what we do as a professional group. Good stand-alone graphics are most welcome. Charles Patrick and Duncan Murdoch will be putting examples on our website (http://mast.queensu.ca/ - ssc/) over the next few weeks.

The continued development of the SSC website should greatly enhance our visibility to a broad spectrum of people who might not

Le comité sur le bilinguisme a fait une série de recommendations pour favoriser la

communication dans les deux langues lors des congrès annuels de la SSS. Pour le congrès de 1995, une équipe dirigée par Marc Moore avait rédigé un programme entièrement bilingue. De plus, comme les conférenciers devaient préparer des transparents ou diapositives dans les deux langues, il s'est alors avéré plus facile de suivre les conférences dans une langue ou dans l'autre.

Pour les conférenciers dont les transparents ou diapositives ne sont pas prêts suffisamment à l'avance pour faire appel au service gratuit de traduction, un glossaire anglais/français de termes statistiques sera bientôt mis à leur disposition au secrétariat de la SSC. La traduction des mots-clés de leur présentation dans l'autre langue faciliterait ainsi grandement la compréhension.

Le matériel d'exposition «Carrières en statistique» s'est enrichie de nouvelles acquisitions en vue d'éclairer les étudiants du secondaire et du 1 er cycle sur la carrière de statisticien. Encore une fois, tout graphique facilement compréhensible sans pratiquement aucune explication serait fort apprécié. Charles Patrick et Duncan Murdoch en présenteront quelques exemples sur le site Internet de la SSC (http://mast.queensu.ca/ - ssc/) dans les semaines à venir.

Items other thon Letters to the Editor, may be submitted to the Editor or any Associate Editor. Letters to the Editor should be submitted only to the Editor.

T he maximum number of words, in the original language, is: Mailbox: 375; Short article: 750; Feature article: 1750.

The Editors reserve the right not to publish any letter submitted or to publish an edited version .

Articles for Liaison should be submitted in machine-readable form. Contributed Papers Contributed papers, for which abstracts have been received, are in the process of being scheduled either for presentation at sessions (15 minutes each) or for display at poster sessions. For this session individuals or groups are invited to participate in the analysis of one or both of two available data sets and to submit their analysis for presentation at the meeting in the Case Studies Session.The two data sets, with descriptions, are now available on the WEB, at http://mast.queensu.cal-ssc/.

The first data set is a study of subjects' perception of forces exerted by the thumb which was performed by a research team in the School of Rehabilitation of the Université de Montréal. The subjects must move their thumb in a given direction by exerting a certain force and the coordinates of the vector representing the move are recorded. Since there are many directions, two hands, two conditions, and the forces are measured twice, this problem involves repeated measures.

The second data set involves the effects of the use of forestry equipment on two types of soil. This can be viewed as a regression problem where the cases represent variables measured after a trip of the machinery on a trail. There are three trails for each of two types of soil. For each trail, there are measurements for six trips for a total of 36 cases (but can one really treat each case as independent?)

Le premier ensemble de données étudie la perception, par le sujet, de la force de, son pouce, étude réalisée par une équipe de recherche de l'Ecole de réadaptation de l'Université de Montréal. Les sujets doivent déplacer leur pouce dans une direction précise en exerçant une certaine force et les coordonnées du vecteur représentant le déplacement sont alors enregistrées. Comme il y a plusieurs directions, deux mains, deux conditions et deux répétitions, il s'agit d'un problème de mesures répétées.

Le deuxième jeu de données porte sur les effets de l'utilisation de la machinerie forestière sur deux types de sol. C'est un problème de régression sur des variables mesurées lors d'un déplacement de la machinerie sur un sentier. Il y a trois sentiers pour chacun des deux types de sol. Pour chaque sentier, les mesures sont prises pour six déplacements, soit un total de 36 cas (peut-on vraiment traiter les différents cas comme étant indépendants?) .

The course will be useful for pers ons who want an introduction to questionnaire design, and will be a valuable refresher for more experienced researchers as well as a source of new ideas about familiar material.

Topics will include the relationship between the questionnaire and the survey process; the use of focus groups, cognitive research methods and pretesting in the development of questionnaires; types of questions; question wording; sequencing of questions; questionnaire layout; and questionnaires as a source of response error. Examples of questionnaires will be used to illustrate the course material.

T he instructor will be Allen Gower who heads the Questionnaire Design Resource Centre at Statistics Canada. He has over twenty years of experience as a survey research consultant, and has presented papers on questionnaire design at international conferences. Mr. Gower has instructed many courses and workshops on survey methods and questionnaire design throughout Canada. From 1988 to 1991 he conducted a course on survey research methods at Carleton University's Summer School. In 1993 he presented a course on Questionnaire Design at the International Conference on Establishment Surveys in Buffalo, New York.

T he topic will be developed from the basics of bioassay to new developments and research areas. A brief history and overview will be given. Issues arising in models for carcinogenicity and teratology, methods for multiple outcomes, risk assessment and

M. Allen Gower, chef du Centre d'information sur la conception des questionnaires à Statistique Canada, dirigera l'atelier. Il a une bonne vingtaine d'années d'expérience comme consultant en méthodologie d'enquête et a présenté plusieurs conférences sur le sujet lors de congrès internationaux. Par le passé, il a participé dans tout le Canada à de nombreux cours intensifs ou ateliers sur la méthodologie d'enquête et sur la conception de questionnaires. Durant les sessions d'été de 1988 à 1991, il a donné un cours en échantillonnage à l'Université Carleton. En 1993, il a animé un cours sur la conception de questionnaires dans le cadre de l' <<International Conference on Establishment Surveys» à Buffalo, New York.

The workshop will be of interest to individuals for a variety of reasons due to the breadth of issues covered under the general topic of bioassay. However, it will be particularly useful to statisticians working in the preclinical development of pharmacologic therapies. No prior experience in bioassay is required.

Paul Catalano is Assistant Professor and Louise Ryan Professor in the Department of Biostatistics at the Harvard School of Public Health. Both also have joint appointments at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Drs. Catalano and Ryan have published extensively on statistical issues in risk assessment, particularly related to developmental and reproductive toxicity. Dr Ryan also works in the area of carcinogenicity and Dr Catalano on neurotoxicity. Their work in the se areas of application has lead to interesting statistical contributions related to survival analysis, methods for clustered data, and analysis of multiple outcomes, including mixtures of discrete and continuous outcomes.

preliminary Program The philosophy underlying this symposium is based on the recognition that statistics is strongly tied to applications in scientific disciplines and consequently many new crucial statistical problems will arise from problems in the sciences. It is expected that the talks and discussions will cover a mixture of science and statistics/ data analysis and will bring to light underdeveloped areas of statistics and statistical issues related to the sciences. Sorne subject areas that are expected to be represented are biology, chem-istry, computer vision, environmental sciences, finance and economics, genetics, geophysics and oceanography.

The University of Georgia, Athens Georgia, U.S.A., will host an international symposium on Estimating Functions,

March 21-23, 1996. The Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the Statistical Society of Canada will co-sponsor the symposium. Lodging The Symposium will be held at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education at the University of Georgia. Lodging is available at the Georgia Center at $48 to $55 (single-double) per night. At 1600h on Monday, January 29, Dartmouth Medical officially unveiled, at the

American Hospital Association's meeting in Washington, D.C., a detailed compendium called the Darbnouth Atlas of Health Care in the United States. The first instalment of this Atlas, made up of a comprehensive set of graphs, maps and interlinking text, analyses the national geographic distribution of health care resources in the United States. This compendium is the product of ten years of research by a team led by medical care epidemiologist, John E. Wennberg, which included SSC member Thérèse A. Stukel as the team statistician.

An informative account of this research and its findings may be found in a long article: "Sharp Regional Incongruity Found in Medical Costs and Treatments", that appeared in the Medical Science section (page C3) of the Tuesday, January 30 edition of the New York Times, which quotes SSC member Thérèse A. Stukel and a certain . . . Bradley Efron, among many others.

Biostatistics in Toronto

For several years, a monthly series of seminars known as "Clinical Biostatistics

Rounds" has been organized in Toronto. The rounds are attended by professional statisticians working in University of Toronto affiliated hospitals and research institutes and in Toronto area pharmaceutical companies, and by students and faculty of the graduate programs in biostatistics and statistics at the University of Toronto.

The Rounds are held from 4:30-5:30 p.m. on the last Wednesday of the month from October through May. The location is room 7-605 at the new Princess Margaret Hospital/ Ontario Cancer Institute, 6 10 University Avenue. Everyone with an interest in biostatistics is welcome to attend and to join the post-seminar dinner group.

A 16hOO précises le lundi 29 janvier, au congrès de l' «American Hospital Associa

tion» tenu à Washington, l'école de médecine de «Dartmouth College» a procédé au lancement d'un atlas détaillé appelé le Darbnouth Atlas of Health Care in the United States. La première édition de cet atlas, conçu à partir d'un ensemble fort complet de graphiques, de cartes géographiques et de notes explicatives, présente une distribution géographique des ressources dans le domaine de la santé aux États-Unis. Cet atlas est le résultat de dix années d'efforts soutenus de la part d'une équipe de chercheurs dirigée par l'épidémiologiste John E. Wennberg. La statisticienne de l'équipe est Thérèse A. Depuis plusieurs années, sont organisées mensuellement à Toronto les fameuses

rencontres «Clinical Biostatistics Rounds» . Y participent régulièrement des statisticiens professionnels travaillant dans les hôpitaux et les centres de recherche affiliés à l'Université de Toronto ou dans les compagnies pharmaceutiques de la grande région de Toronto ainsi que des étudiants et professeurs des départements de biostatistique et de statistique de l'université.

work may boost grades" which

appeared in the December 1 995 issue of University Affairs:

" . . . according to a survey carried

out by the Institute for Social

Research at York University . . .

having a part-time job may

actually improve students'

grades. The survey found

students who work one to eight

hours a week have slightly

higher grade point averages

(5.6 compared with 5.5) and

complete as many credits as

those without part-time jobs.

The higher grades were

attributed to the fact that the

discipline required in the working

world may be carried over to

students' study habits."

Professor Mikl6s Csèirgèi (Carleton University) has been elected Foreign Member

of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Professor A.K.Md.E. Saleh (Carleton University) has been elected Fellow, American Statistical Association - for outstanding research on the development of improved estimation procedures based on preliminary tests and shrinkage methods; for contributions in nonparametric estimation; and for service to the profession, especially in the creative organization of conferences and edited volumes.

Sorne Thoughts on Employment Prospects for Statistics G raduates

In a recent emailing to statisticians in Atlantic Canada, Rolf Turner, an associate editor of Liaison, suggested developing

a discussion on the theme of "employment in statistics". To launch the discussion, he asked:

1. How are you (your university or department) doing at attracting students, both undergraduate and graduate, in Statistics?

2. If you are not attracting hordes of students, do you have evidence, anecdotal or otherwise, that students perceive employment prospects in statistics as being poor? Do they perceive that the employment prospects are better elsewhere, e.g. in computer science, engineering, economics, accounting, . . . ?

3. Are they right? It would be interesting to hear from statisticians in the "real world" (i.e., beyond academia) . Were you hired as a statistician? Has your firm or organization hired any statisticians recently? Does your management view statisticians as playing a useful and necessary role? Does your management know what statistics is all about? Do they care?

4. If there ARE jobs out there for statisticians, especially for people with bachelor's degrees in statistics, how do we find out about them? How can we convince students that the jobs are there and that they would profit by getting a degree in statistics?

5. If there AREN'T jobs out there, can we modify what we teach or how we teach it so as to make our graduates more attractive to prospective employers? Again it would be usefuI to have input from the "real world".

6. Can we do anything to raise "statistical awareness"? Can we do anything to convince companies/prospective employers that they would benefit from hiring a statistician or two? Has anyone attempted to put together a set of examples or colle ct data which demonstrate the value of statistics and would grab their attention?

Although l am not from the "real world", l have some thoughts regarding item 5. They are based on gut feelings rather than on solid evidence. l have a sense that prospective employers look for the following qualities:

(i) Communication skills: an ability to give lucid and simple answers to simple questions.

(ii) Writing skills.

(iii) Computer skills: statistical package programs, spreadsheets.

(iv) An ability to address urgent problems with ad hoc solutions.

Les perspectives d'emploi pour les diplômés en statistique

Par le biais d'un message électronique adressé aux statisticiens des provinces atlantiques, Rolf Turner, collaborateur

de Liaison, a suggéré d'entamer une discussion sur les perspectives d'emploi en statistique. Pour lancer la discussion, il a posé les questions suivantes :

1. Quel est le degré de succès de votre université et votre département à attirer des étudiants en statistique au niveau du baccalauréat ou des études supérieures?

2 . Dans le cas où les étudiants n'affluent pas, avez-vous des preuves, anecdotiques ou autres, que les perspectives d'emploi en statistique leur paraissent bien minces? Ont-ils l'impression qu'elles sont meilleures dans d'autres domaines, comme en informatique, en ingénierie, en économie, en comptabilité, . . . ?

3. Leur donnez-vous raison? Il serait intéressant de connaître l'avis de statisticiens sur le «marché du travail» (en dehors du monde académique) et de leur poser quelques questions. Avez-vous été engagé comme statisticien? Votre entreprise a-t-elle engagé un statisticien récemment? La direction de votre entreprise attribue-t-elle un rôle important et utile aux statisticiens? Connaît-elle tous les avantages de la statistique? Est-elle intéressée à les connaître?

4. S'il existe des emplois pour les statisticiens, particulièrement pour ceux qui ont complété un baccalauréat, comment peuton les dénicher? Comment convaincre les étudiants que les emplois existent et qu'ils auraient intérêt à entreprendre des études en statistique?

5. S'il n'existe pas d'emploi pour les statisticiens, serait-il possible de modifier le contenu des cours et la manière de les enseigner en fonction des besoins des employeurs éventuels? Encore une fois, l'avis des statisticiens sur le «marché du travail» serait fort apprécié.

6. Comment faire pour forger une «conscience statistique»? Comment arriver à convaincre les compagnies et les employeurs éventuels qu'il leur serait bénéfique d'engager un ou deux statisticiens? Quelqu'un a-t-il une collection d'exemples frappants ou de données significatives qui pourrait retenir leur attention sur les avantages de la statistique?

Même si je n'appartiens pas à ce «marché du travail», j'aimerais énoncer sur le sujet no. 5 quelques opinions qui reposent davantage sur des intuitions que sur des certitudes. J'ai l'impression que les qualités recherchées par les employeurs éventuels sont les suivantes :

(i) la faculté de communiquer, de donner des réponses claires et précises à des questions simples;

(ii) une grande facilité de rédaction;

(iii) la maîtrise des ordinateurs et l'expérience des logiciels statistiques et des tableurs;

(iv) une habileté certaine à trouver des solutions rapides aux problèmes urgents;

(v) Knowledge of the literature; where to go for help.

l have a sense that prospective employers do not want:

a) Statistical jargon which they don't understand.

b) A list of assumptions underlying the statistical method that produced the p-value: while such assumptions are a major concern for the statistician, the employer has no time for such "petty" details.

c) Elegant proofs and theorems.

d) Publications in the area of theoretical statistics.

e) Research baggage which cannot be adapted to benefit the company: the employer will want a break with the past, a youthful fresh start.

The following paradigm may be something like what is followed by researchers in their deliberation of whether to involve a statistician in their research. It may be useful to students of statistics seeking to understand their statistical role. The paradigm involves considering the practitioners of statistics in three distinct groups. The first group is those who are engaged in an area of research, who do not regard themselves as statisticians, but who nevertheless have a rudimentary knowledge of the t-test, chi-square test, simple regression and other basic statistical tools. The second group consists of applied statisticians with a formal degree in statistics at the B.Sc, M.Sc or Ph.D level. Data analysts and statistical consultants are included in this group. They have varying levels of statistical expertise, computer proficiency, communication skills, and knowledge of the statistical literature. The third group comprises the theoreticians, those whose primary goal in life is to exp and the statistical frontiers.

The paradigm is depicted by two concentric circles, the larger having a diameter at least twice that of the smaller. Arrows radiate outwards from the circumference of the larger circle. The inner circle represents the statistical skills of the typical non-statistician who has a research project. The outer circle denotes the potential contribution of the applied statistician/biostatistician to the project. The arrows radiating outwards from the larger circle reflect the work of theoreticians in expanding the statistical frontiers.

The paradigm is useful to students who will become the future practitioners of statistics because it invites them to consider such questions as: (a) Where would you like to see yourself? (b) What does the research community need from the statistician? (ls it to exp and the outer circle, or simply to get to it?) (c) How does the statistician seek recognition for his/her contributions?

l hope my comments will arouse a broader discussion of the questions posed by Rolf Turner. This is an important topic -possibly vital to the long-term survival of our profession!

b) la liste de toutes les hypothèses sous-jacentes relatives au seuil observé; ces hypothèses, très importantes aux yeux du statisticien, ne sont que détails pour l'employeur;

c) les preuves élégantes des théorèmes;

d) les publications dans le domaine de la statistique théorique;

e) les travaux de recherche antérieurs sans intérêt immédiat pour l'entreprise; l'employeur va désirer une rupture avec le passé et exiger un nouveau départ.

Le cheminement suivi par les chercheurs dans leur décision de demander ou non la collaboration d'un statisticien pourrait être représenté par un schéma qui puisse aider les étudiants en statistique à comprendre leur rôle futur. Les praticiens de la statistique seraient divisés en trois groupes distincts. Le premier groupe comprendrait les chercheurs qui ne se considèrent pas comme statisticiens même s'ils possèdent des connaissances élémentaires sur le test de t, le test du chi-deux, la régression simple et d'autres outils statistiques de base. Le second groupe englobe les statisticiens appliqués ayant complété des études de baccalauréat, de maîtrise ou de doctorat; les analystes et les consultants en statistique sont inclus dans ce groupe. Leur expertise en statistique, leur connaissance de l'informatique, leur compétence en communications et leur connaissance de la litérature statistique varie. Les théoriciens, dont le seul but est d'étendre les frontières de la statistique, feraient partie du troisième groupe.

Le schéma consisterait en deux cercles concentriques, le plus grand ayant un diamètre au moins double de celui du plus petit, et en flèches excentriques qui prendraient leur origine sur le grand cercle. Le cercle intérieur représenterait les connaissances statistiques du non-statisticien confronté à un projet de recherche. Le cercle extérieur représenterait, lui, la contribution potentielle du statisticien/biostatisticien au projet et les flèches excentriques, le reflet du travail des théoriciens cherchant à repousser les frontières de la statistique.

D'un grand intérêt pour les futurs praticiens de la statistique, ce schéma pourrait sans doute les amener à se poser diverses questions, telles: (a) Dans quel milieu de travail vais-je évoluer? (b) Qu'attend la communauté scientifique des statisticiens? (Vont-ils chercher à agrandir le cercle extérieur ou simplement chercher à l'atteindre?) (c) Que doit faire le statisticien pour que son travail soit reconnu par les chercheurs?

j'espère que mes modestes commentaires vont permettre d'élargir la discussion initiée par les questions de Rolf Turner. Je considère ce sujet comme très important, sinon vital, pour la survie à long terme de notre profession!

The Syllogism

StatiStics is a subset of probability. Probability is a subset of measure theory. Therefore . . . mathematical folklore

Once upon a time a new arrivaI to a math department, a young fellow who had just got his degree, was being shown around and introduced:

. . . "Welcome to the department, Dr. Knight." ... "Have you found a place to live yet?" . . . "Glad to hear it; housing is tight at the moment."

. . . "How does your wife like our city?" (That one requires a little white lie.)

. . . "And what kind of mathematics do you do?"

... "Statistics???" A puzzled expression, then comprehension. (Statistics is a subset of probability, probability is . . . )

. . . "Ah, you are a measure theorist."

We may smile at this little quirk of our friends and colleagues as doubtless they smile at sorne of ours. They're only mathematicians; we have outgrown this idea.

During the past month a couple of opinions came my way, from statisticians: • You can teach and understand probability without statistics

but you cannot teach or understand statistics without probability.

• Probability is so basic that anyone calculating even a simple average cannot possibly understand what he's doing if he doesn't know probability. (Note 1.)

Why is the bad guy always probability? What about other species of mathematics?: • Regression is linear algebra. • Analysis of variance is tensor products.

• Time series is Hilbert space. • Creating experimental designs is combinatorics. • Inference, statistical or otherwise, is logic.

Folklore ignores all of these; statistics is always probability.

1 think 1 know part of the reason. There's this tradition: Gotta derive the "t" distribution. So our textbooks dutter good statistics with a mess of calculus. The derivation is a fraud. Not because the density is incorrectly derived, but because it's not used. What's really used is the table in the back of the book. Whence came the table? The density may be difficult, even impossible (Note 2.), to integrate; having the density is certainly not the same thing as having the table (Note 3) .

Consider a few areas of statistics. [1 ] Regression and analysis of variance are both linear algebra.

. . . «Votre épouse aime-t-elle notre ville?» (Vous devriez alors mentir en peu.)

. . . «Dans quelle branche des mathématiques êtes-vous ?»

. . . «La statistique???» Son interlocuteur laisse alors paraître une légère perplexité, puis soudain c'est la révélation. (La statistique est un sous-ensemble des probabilités, les probabilités sont . . . ) . . . «Ah, vous êtes un théoricien de la mesure!» . . .

Nous pouvons, bien sûr, nous moquer de certaines marottes de nos collègues et amis comme eux s'amusent sûrement des nôtres. Ce sont seulement des mathématiciens, il ne faut pas l'oublier . . .

Je voudrais vous faire part de quelques réflexions entendues récemment chez les statisticiens : • il est possible d'enseigner et de comprendre les probabilités

sans connaître la statistique, mais la réciproque n'est pas vraie;

• sans la connaissance de la théorie des probabilités, il est absolument impossible de comprendre le processus qui permet de calculer une simple moyenne (voir note 1).

Mais pourquoi toujours parler de probabilités? Pourquoi pas d'autres domaines? • La régression, c'est de l'algèbre linéaire. • L'analyse de variance est une application des produits ten-

soriels. • Les séries chronologiques découlent des espaces d'Hilbert. • La planification d'expériences n'est que de la combinatoire. • L'inférence, qu'elle soit statistique ou autre, est de la logique.

Il n'y a rien à faire, le folklore veut que statistique = probabilités.

Je crois avoir trouvé une réponse partielle à ces questions ... Il Y a d'abord cette tradition qui persiste à vouloir montrer d'où vient la loi de «t» . Les livres de statistique sont encombrés de démonstrations mathématiques indigestes. Celle de la loi de «D> est une filouterie, non pas que la démonstration de la densité soit inexacte, mais parce qu'elle n'est jamais utilisée. La table à la fin du livre est le seul élément utile. D'où vient cette table? La densité de la loi est difficile, sinon impossible à intégrer (voir note 2) ; obtenir la densité est une chose, obtenir la table en est une autre (voir note 3).

Considérons maintenant quelques domaines de la statistique. [1] La régression et l'analyse de variance sont toutes deux de

l'algèbre linéaire. Il n'y a qu'à étudier leur vocabulaire pour s'en convaincre: carré de la norme (variance), produit vec-

subspace (degrees of freedom), linear dependence (confounding), ill condition (multicollinearity), tensor product (interaction), projection (contrast) . (Note 4.) The linear algebra concepts are fundamental, important, and inextricably intertwined in the statistics.

And how much probability in the analysis of variance? Not much. At the very start we randomize (Note 5.). At the very end we look up a number in an F table. That's it; that's all. Neither uses much measure theory. Neither entails probability beyond the common folklore of our culture. To any who claim foundations necessary for "understanding", l cry hypocrisy. Few mathematically oriented statistics textbooks tell how to use a random number table (Note 6.), fewer tell how those numbers in the F table were calculated.

[2] Reckoning the variances of a complex survey design is a calculation in mathematical expectation. Expectation is a linear operator, and there we are, once more in linear algebra.

[3] Time series is Hilbert Space. Hilbert space is linear algebra only in more dimensions.

Though l question that statistics is a branch of mathematics at aIl (Note 7.), be there any branch of mathematics indispensable to practical understanding in statistics, that branch is linear algebra. As for probability, you can go a long way with little more than a few tables at the back of the book. As for those tables, just leave them underived rather than fake the derivation.

Nevertheless, a certain statistician did not assert that you must understand linear algebra to understand statistics, nor would old Professor X ever have welcomed me with "Ah, Dr. Knight, you are a linear algebraist."

6. 1 know this seems trivial, but try giving a class a book with numbered pages, a random number table, and, fumishing no hints, ask for a sample of ten words.

7. If anyone wants my opinion, statistics is "a quantitative subset of the philosophy of the scientific method". How's that for a pretentious polysyllabic mouthful?

toriel (covariance), orthogonalité (absence de corrélation), dimension du sous-espace (degrés de liberté), dépendance linéaire (variables confondues), mauvais conditionnement (multicolinéarité), produit tensoriel (interaction) ou projection (contraste) (voir note 4) . Les concepts d'algèbre linéaire sont fondamentaux et inextricablement reliés aux concepts statistiques. Et quelle est l'importance des probabilités en analyse de variance? Assez minime. Au tout début, il faut randomiser (voir note 5) et, à la toute fin, consulter une table de F. C'est tout et c'est peu. À aucun de ces moments, la théorie de la mesure n'est employée; l'utilis,ation des probabilités tient uniquement de notre folklore. A tous ceux qui clament que les bases théoriques sont nécessaires à la compréhension, je crie à l'hypocrisie. Peu de livres de statistique mathématique expliquent comment utiliser une table de nombres aléatoires (voir note 6), encore moins d'ouvrages indiquent comment a été construite la table de F.

[2] Le calcul de la variance dans un plan d'échantillonnage complexe est un calcul d'espérance mathématique. Or, l'espérance mathématique est un opérateur linéaire et nous revoilà, une fois de plus, en algèbre linéaire.

[3] Les séries chronologiques découlent des espaces d'Hilbert et les espaces d'Hilbert sont, tout simplement, de l'algèbre linéaire en plusieurs dimensions.

Je me demande parfois si la statistique est une branche des mathématiques (voir note 7), mais je suis sûr d'une chose: s'il y a une branche des mathématiques indispensable à la compréhension pratique de la statistique, cette branche est bien l'algèbre linéaire. Quant aux probabilités, on peut parcourir un long chemin en statistique sans les utiliser, à l'exception de quelques tables à la fin des livres. TI me semblerait donc plus honnête de ne pas essayer de faire de similis «démonstrations» de ces tables.

Néanmoins, un statisticien n'affirmera jamais qu'il faut maîtriser l'algèbre linéaire pour comprendre la statistique. Et le vieux professeur X ne m'aurait jamais accueilli avec un «Ah, M. Knight, vous êtes un algébriste linéaire!»

leur consommation en litres/100km, seraient donc des ignares malavisés, mis à part ceux qui sont tout à la fois probabilistes et propriétaires d'un véhicule automobile.

2. IJexemple le plus frappant est toujours celui de la loi normale!

3. En fait, c'est la fonction inverse de l'intégrale qui est tabulée plutôt que l'intégrale elle-même. Nous avons donc, en plein centre du processus d'élaboration de la table, à résoudre une équation non linéaire avec intégration numérique. Il s'agit là d'analyse numérique non triviale, même si les livres en nient l'existence.

4. De temps en temps, des questions sur ces définitions apparaissent sur le réseau (sci.stat.consult) , résultant à chaque fois en une leçon d'algèbre linéaire.

5. Une très bonne connaissance de la théorie de la mesure semble nécessaire pour faire correspondre les nombres au hasard de la table aux numéros d'ordre de la base de sondage!

6. Je sais fort bien que l'exercice semble trivial, mais essayez de donner à vos étudiants un livre quelconque et une table de nombres au hasard, puis demandez-leur de tirer un échantillon de 10 mots! !

7. Selon moi, la statistique pourrait être ainsi définie : «sous-ensemble quantitatif de la philosophie de la méthode scientifique». De quoi se délecter les maxillaires, sinon l'intellect!
