NET11'ORK CHANGES

Tmd is the Telemundo Spanish-language network; IN is the Ir.for-mall infomercial net .

Currently, the only unaffili-ated commercial TV station in theSouth Bend market is religious WHMF96 . ABC will have to either enticethe NBC or CBS affiliate to switch,or settle for a LPTV .

In West Point/Tupelo, WLOV hadbeen a primary ABC/secondary Foxaffiliate ; effective September 1, itwill drop ABC programming and become100-: Fox . ABC told Broadcasting andCable that cable coverage will re-place WLOV's coverage . (in thisrelatively poor and rural area, Irather suspect cable won't do a very

good job of replacing WLOV . .) WLOVis LM.~d by WTVA-9, a NBC affiliate .Many programs on WLOV show a titleat the end saying "This programprovided by WTVA, Inc ." .

More ratings are in from theFox Surprise . By market :(numbers are how much the share ofprimetime viewing increased / de-clined over the network swap)

0`I'HER STUFF'

A Johnstown, Pa . station haschanged calls to WTWB-TV . Whichone, I don't know . This station, may"have adopted a WB Network affilia-tion at the same time .

The FCC has decided to allowSF, a joint venture of Fox Broad-casting and Savoy Pictures, to buyWLUK-11 Green Bay . This paves theway for WLUK to switch from NBC toFox . Fox is a 25- partner in thestation; with Fcx already at theownership limits, if the FCC wereto count WLUK as a Fox-owned sta-tion, Fox would be required to sellit . See Keith Smith's report formore information or. Fox's legal sit-uation .

CBS has disposed of surplusWVEU-69 Atlanta . In the same weekin which they purchased WGPR-62 Detroit, they also bought the Atlantastation, expecting to convert it toa CBS affiliate . At the lastminute, a special deal was reachedwith Tribune Broadcasting, grantingthe affiliation tc more-establishedWGNX-96 . WVEU is now a UPN affili-ate .

Parson Communications hasbought another affiliate for theInformall infomercial network .KUBD-59 Denver is a former Telemundoaffiliate . In a related develop-ment, the FCC has approved Paxscr.'spurchase of KZKI-18 San Bernardino(Los Angeles), KLXV-65 San Jose (San.Francisco), and. WGOT-60 Merrimack,NH . (Boston)

The share of viewers watchingBig 3 networks has fallen to 57-. .93- of viewers are watching Fcx,PBS, independents, cr cable . TVexecutives blame the absence of Ma-jor League baseball, the success ofthe 1999 Winter Olympics (and thelack of Olympics this year), thesuccess of Fox's NFL football, andthe O . J . Simpson trial . (which isbringing lots of viewers to CNN .O .J . coverage fills most of theslots of most popular programs oncable .)

The arrival of digital HDTVcould also blur the distinctic^, be-tween TV and radio . FCC Chair ReedHundt has suggested part of the 6mHzof digital TV spectrum might be usedto provide digital radio . Radioowners and the NAB aren't particu-larly happy with the plan ; they feelmost cities already have mere radiostations than, the economy car. sup-port .

DXers near markets with Univi-sior. affiliates may Boor, be doing adouble-take . Sesame Street is nowappearing- in Spanish- on Ur.ivisicnaffiliates in LA, Dallas, and Miami .The Spanish edition. is produced ir.cooperation with the M.exicar. Tele-Visa network., and already airs inMexico and Latin. America .

The conservative HeritageFoundation has proposed the possi-ble elimination of the FCC . A paperby the organization's Adam Thierersuggests that it might be a goodidea to eliminate the agency . Someregulatory functions (presumablywith regard to telephone companiesand non-technical regulations)would be turned over to the states .Setting of technical standardswould be done by industry and en-forced by the courts . And radiospectrum would be auctioned, with a"spectrum board" created to enforceresulting property rights .

In what may be good news forTV DXers . . . Stanley S . Hubbard ofHubbard Broadcasting (KSTP-5/99 .5,USSB) told the NAB : "Today, thereis an all-time-record-high sale ofoutdoor antennas ." Of course, he

The Group W/CBS deal may begoing further than network affilia-tion changes . The CNBC cable channel reported in late April thatWestinghouse was working on a planto buy CBS for $Sbillion .

Two deregulatory bills havebeen introduced in the House ofRepresentatives . One would makerenewal of TV licenses easier andexpand the license term to sevenyears . It would also require theFCC to grant a second channel to allTV stations, and would extend must-carry regulations to telephone com-panies delivering cable services .

The other bill, which facesDemocratic opposition, would repeallimits on the number of TV stationsthat could be owned by the samefirm . Instead, one owner would berestricted to stations covering 35-of U .S . viewers . (the current limitis 25-) After one year, this numberwould increase tc 50= ; then, the FCCwould be directed to review theentire issue, possibly eliminatingthe restriction altogether .

The law would also allow com-mon ownership of two UHF stations,or a VHF and a UHF, ir. the samemarket ; the FCC could also choosetc allow common ownership of twovHFs . The dual-network rule wouldalso be repealed ; this rule pro-hibits one company from operatingmore than one TV network .

New station WKAY-64 has beensold . The buyers currently ownWKPT-15 Kingsport, Tennessee, andthree Tennessee radio stations .

FORUM

John Ebeling, Hloomin~ton MN . :

John sent the item about KNLD-21 . He says the signals are non-existent with a bow-tie antenna athis cabin, 26 miles from the trans-mitter . Unless John's cabin is inan unusually poor RF location (andI'm not aware of any such locationsin northern Minnesota), this wouldseem to indicate KNLD's power isactually considerably lower thanthe listed 955kW . At my location,

12

I can get a viewable, but snowy,picture from a 400kW station over50 miles away with a bow-tie .

Anyway, the News-Tribune arti-cle mentions the station's ratherlimited operating schedule . As ofearly April, KNLD was on weekdaysbetween 2 and Spm only ; by now itit had expected to operate from noonto lOpm . Some UPN and WB programsare airing on the station, thoughothers in the Star Trek series won'tbe moving from KBJR-6 for a fewmonths . KNLD also expects to landa Fox affiliation eventually, afterWDIO-10's secondary agreement ex-pires . Finally, the station expectsto air Milwaukee Brewers baseball,Minnesota Timberwolves basketball, and NHL ice hockey .

Delays in KNLD's premiere aredue to delays in negotiating a LMAwith KBJR . If such an agreement isreached, KNLD will share KBJR's stu-dios and much of their technicalequipment . At this time, KNLD isoperating with a minimum staff oftwo : a chief engineer and a generalmanager .

The article contains a sidebaron a subject we haven't seen formany years . . . "UAF stations like?44LD-TV Channel 21 operate on theUltra High Frequency, as opposed tothe Very High Frequency band - orVHF - on which the other local TVstations broadcast ."

Dave Sinclair, Vancouver HC :

Dave noticed an itea~ in Broad-casting and Cable about KBGE-33 be-ing sold . It mentioned "Act . Jan .6 (BTCCT99i220-KE)" . This is a FCCfile number . The BTC stands forBroadcast Transfer of Control, andthe CT for Commercial Television .941220 means the application wasfiled on December 2G, 1999 . I as-sume the KE is used to distinguishthis application from others filedon the same date .

Also forwarded was a CRTC pub-lic notice of a hearing on two com-peting applications for religiousTV stations in Vancouver . One ap-plication is from National Chris-tian Television, Inc . ; the otherfrom Gloria Kieler . Both stationspropose to operate on channel 42,and to air both Canadian and"foreign" (presumably U .S .) reli-gious material, in English . Inter-estingly, the hearings are to beheld in Winnipeg . . .

Dave has also heard of a CRTCgrant to a new station in

(Forum, Sinclair, contd .)Lethbridge, Alberta on channel 17 .My source of official CRTC informa-tion hasn't been updated since lateMarch, so I can't check this . Suchan application was filed in March, and it was returned for clarifica-tion .

The CBC has has withdrawn itslicense renewal applications for lo-cal Tv stations . CBC officials wartthe CRTC to grant temporary exten-sions until early 1997 . Licence re-newals in Canada carry requirementsfor specific amounts of local pro-gramming, and budget cuts leave theCBC uncertain of their financialability to meet the requirements .

Matt Sittel, Asheville NC :

(there was a great "mini-convention" at Matt's in mid-April .Mt . Mitchell proved an excellentplace for a DX-pedition (albeitrather cold!), and there was evensome low-level DX in town .)

Religious WGGS-16 Greenville,SC has added another translator .W42AC is new on in Athens, Georgia .

Fred McCOrmack, St . Paul MN :

Ernie Wesolowski'_ my_=tery pi-rate TBN-53 in Omaha has returned .Fred was in western Omaha on April 21and noted a strong TBN signal onchannel 53 . He also saw K95CQ Coun-cil Bluffs with TBN, though muchweaker . (that would seem to elimi-nate the possibility of 53 being achannel change for K45CQ .) Fred alsoconfirmed that K3BDU Sioux City is aTBN .

I misspoke, about the program-ming source on K28ER Dulce, NM. . Ilisted their primary as KOB-9 . Fredpointed out their ownership as thesame as KGAT-7 .

John Combs, Orlando FL :

Here we go again, with W90AQ . . .For awhile, they ran America's OneNetwork, then repeated a local dogshow (?!) . This month, it's takenover the Telemundo affiliation fromlongstanding affiliate W07BZ . Chan-nel 7, in turn, has switched to SURSouth American television .

John also has a mystery . Actu-ally, two mysteries . During an open-ing to south Georgia, South Carolina, and eastern North Carolina, he sawtwo stations on channel 96 . One wasa TBN; the other was carrying a bas-ketball game between Vidalia and PikeCounty (Georgia) High Schools . I

have no listings for either sta-tion .Jerry Stuart, Lawton OK :

Jerry lives near a police ra-dio repeater on 453 .35mHz . Everytime it transmits, it overloadschannel 25 . He wonders what car. bedone about it? I suggested he trya 1/9 wave tuned stub to null thepolice transmitter . Does anyoneelse have a better idea?

He's also seeing a "PleaseStay Tuned" test pattern all nighton channel 28 . I speculated he wasseeing the new KYLE-28 Bryan,Texas, but this too is an unID fornow .

Keith Smith, St . Ann MO :

Going back to the Fox owner-ship debate, the FCC ruled on May4 that Fox didn`t deliberately conceal

the

Australiar.

component

ofits ownership when it bought theformer Metromedia stations . It wasalso ruled that this Australianownership _does violate foreign-ownership restrictions . Fox maychoose between selling 74 " of theirstock (reducing the foreign owner-ship to 25+) or asking for a waiverof the foreign ownership rules .

Reports in Broadcasting andCable suggest the Comsiission isleaning towards granting the requested waiver . RestructuringFox's ownership would cost the com-pany seeeral hundred miilior. dol-lars in capital gains taxes ; Foxwill not co ..̂sider that optio^ .

DX ETC .

Nothing enormously exotichere, but there has been some skip .I'm also more-or-less back, on the6 meter ham band, running 10 wattsto a Zepp at 40 feet . Nothingexciting, but it does help keep intouch with the skip openings .

Please note the conve ..̂tienchanges . These conventions arealways a blast, you don't want tomiss it!

As the WTFDA nears its 30th anniversary(1997) it seems appropriate to review theclubs history. The following accrount ap-peared in a club publication fitted 'BeyondShortwave" which was part of a new-member packet some 1 S years ago. Manythanks to Dave Nieman for the loan of thisinterestingmaterial.

HC7W ZT ALL BEGAN

The roots of the Worldwide TV-FM DX Association go back manyyears, nearly to the inception ofcommercial television .

In the 1950's Bob Cooper andseveral friends in New York statebegan corresponding about TV DX .When Cooper moved to California, aclub was formed to keep the grouptogether . This club, the AmericanIonospheric Propagation Associa-tion, remained active for more than01il 93htyearyears, unt1 . In taanew bulletin editor took

ceasing publication withoutnotice . No explanation wasreceived for this action .

Many of the formerAmovedon to other clubs,nthenow-defunct Canadian DX

CDXC had an excellent TV DXedited by Wayne Plunkett .other clubs, the Newark NewsClub and the Canadian InternDX Club, also offered TV-FMcolumns ; but many lamented the lackof a club devoted exclusively toVHF-UHF DX .

In 1965, club founders MorrieGoldman and Gary Olson beganefforts to organize a TV-FM club .The two dug up names of thoseexpressing an interest in a TV-FMDX club from electronics magazinesand many other sources . Theirefforts paid off two years later, when at the 1967 Association ofNorth American Radio Clubs Conven-tion in Chicago, Goldman approachedthe publisher of the World MonitorsRadio Club (WMRC) and suggested heconvert it to a TV-FM format .WMRC, created seven years earlier, was floundering with only 27members and an all-band format .The change was made and WTFDA wasborn .

The first bulletin, termed asample issue, was dated September/October 1967 and mailed fromPhiladelphia . The new club, thencalled the WTFDXA, sent this issueto old WMRCers and to many of thepeople who had been contacted aboutforming a TV-FM DX club . Amongfeatures included in the firstissue were an introduction to TV-FMDX, Western TV and FM DX by DennisSmith, and Eastern TV and Productsby Morrie Goldman .

THE MZL1tATlI~E YEARS

1968 began with the move ofWTFDA headquarters from Philadel-phia to Milwaukee . Ferdinand Dombrowski took over as VHF-UHF DIGEST(VUD) editor, publisher, and clubpresident .

The VUD was published bymimeograph during the Milwaukeeera . Dues went from $3 to $3 .50 to$4 .50 per year for first-classdelivery in 1968, and a third classrate was established .

Many of the current VUDcolumns got their start in 1968 .FCC TV and CCI were begun by GaryOlson in April . Other new columns

The September issue was the lastsent to former WMRC members .

November 1968 saw a classicreport by a California memberclaiming reception of channel 2 inSeoul, Korea, channel 3 in CebuCity, Philippines, and other"unusual" loggings . The report wasroundly criticized in subsequentWD's and prompted a classic BobCooper article titled "What isNormal for TV-FM DX?"

WTFDR's second year, 1969,began with a report by PresidentDombrowski that club finances werein good shape and WTFDA was aboutto embark on a campaign ofadvertising in magazines such asCQ . The club's 1969 membershiplist had 113 names shown . By theend of the year, dues were up to$6 .50 per year for first classmail .

The WTFDA Station List cameout in 1969 . It sold to membersfor 50 cents and non-members for 75cents . Glenn Hauser set down clubstandards for counting TV stations, and also wrote a TV DX article forTV GUIDE which netted around 110requests for information on theclub .

WTFDA's first convention washeld May 30 thru June 1, 1969 . Itwas hosted by Bill Heusmann andstaged at Dettmering's Tavern inSteger, IL . 19 people paid a $7 .50registration fee and were inattendance for such talks as "Usinga VTVM as an S-Meter", and "Photo-graph your DX, and get that ID" .

1970 brought Ferdinand Dom-browski's first "President's Mes-sage" . Pat Dyer took over the VHFRadio column, retitled VHF UtilityDX . Charles bobbins took over theFCC FM that year, and Roger Browninitiated the central TV DX column .Morrie Goldman's Video Lines columnintroduced the VAFI signal code .

The WTFDA tradition of greattechnical articles continued in1970 . During the year Glen Hauser

membership and finances by Presi-dent Dombrowski .

Outstanding FM DXer BruceElving featured prominently in

WTFDA's fourth year, 1971 . In thatyear he heard his 1,000th FMstation (WKVI, Knoxville, IN), pub-lished the first "FM Atlas andStation Directory", and headed theFCC FM News column . 1971 also sawTerry Colgan take over the Mailboxcolumn and Charles bobbins moveover to FCC TV .

Dues were increased to $7 .50for first class delivery, and acourse in TV-FM DXing for beginners called the "New MemberPackage" was introduced . EastLansing, MI was the site of thethird annual WTFDA convention, where it was announced that clubpublishing would shift to Chicagoat the end of the year . RogerBrown hosted the gathering over theweekend of August 13-15 .

WTFDA reached a crisis pointin November 1971 . A meeting heldNovember 26 voted on the question :"Will HQ and publishing be moved toIllinois or will the club cease toexist?" The HQ staff decided totransfer the publishing and HQ toIL, over the objections of Ferdin-nd Dombrowski . His last issue inMilwaukee was January 1972 .

DCXrTi ZR PEERf'ZELD

Morrie Goldman and Gary Olsontook over the reins of WTFDA as itmoved to Deerfield, ZL . Both, along with Biil Heusmann, BruceElving and Dave Janowiak had beenvisiting Milwaukee regularly forpublishing sessions .

It was decided early in theDeerfield years to switch to anoffset printing of VUD, and thechange from mimeograph to offsetcame with the May 1972 VUD .

WTFDA membership quicklysoared past the 300 mark in 1972 .New club supplies such as VUDBoxers and DX Log Sheets wereintroduced, while the New MemberPackage and the TV Station Listwent out of print . The FM columnwas split, with Roger Winsor takingFM North, Richard Wood taking FMSouth, and Mike Dorner FM West(which has since been phased out) .

WEST VIRGINIA'S ROCK b ROLL STATION

A grand total of 401 . According to Popular Communications they had listed the town of Breese, III .getting a construction permit for a 6kW FM station, and (sorry, .Alan, I can't make this part out-gc) .I'll pass the information along about both and if they are on .

MIKE BUGAJ - 69 SHERMAN ROAD - ENFIELD CO NNECTICUT 06082Equipment: Carver TX-11 and Sherwood rx, (both IF modified), Probe 9 at 30 feet with rotor .New are underlined .Just a short report this time . Saw Bill Nollman for the first time in a long while and he saidWERB Berlin (ex 97 .3) is now testing on 94 .5 with open carrier but I get nothing but WCHRscatter here . Also he said Block Island 95 .9 is on but all I hear is WEFX and WADB so far .The only two new stations heard here are W288AZ - 105.5 Bernardston, MA relaying WGLY104 .3 Waterbury, VT on February 6th . However, this was heard only for 3-4 days and thengone . It just might be on with much reduced power . And then on March 20 around 2100some coastal trop with WFNN - 95 .7 (WRKS phased out), and WLFX - 97 .1 Ocean Pines,MD (WQHT phased out) with Delmarva's Classic Rock . This would never be heard withoutthe phase box . Now that it's April the band is beginning to come alive, and I can leave theN scale model railroading for a few months and start DXing again . Let's hope Es is good andtropo is even better!

Finally got my roof done and the antennae up . f m now using a CM T dish which replaced the flimsier Antennacraft I usedin Rockaway . The CM seems more directional . Also put up my VHF. The roof of the house with these iwo plus the stackedFM-13s looks like the Baghdad Communications Center. With these up, I can finally compare Sparta and Rockaway (9 milesaway, my former QTH). Philly stations are much weaker on UHE than Rockaway and Scranton much stronger. I can get 38which was rare in Rockaway and I can bring in 44, 28, 22 and 16 s/i by pointing at them. Local WMBC-63 is not a problemeven at 1 .5 Meg at 3 miles . I can get WTZA-62 pointing 60 degrees away from them . Can get 39/69 Allentown S/F. Butno 55 LI or 65 Vineland . (actually, 55 is weak ifl point that way .) Even 47 NY is weak when I point to them but 41 can bes/i . Other "in all the time" stuff : 15 Reading, 21/25/31 NY (but weak), 17/29Phla. (but 57 is very weak), 24Stroudsburg LPN (W24BB) . Harrisburg/York very weak here. Even 8 Lancaster seems weaker than Rockaway, surprisingbecause thatis my "opening" through the mountains . 20/26/32 DC seem to scatter in a lot. We'll see what happens whenthere's real trop .

w~sr~ Tv~asJune1995

A fairly good Fs season a

ears to be shapingup . I have reports of 50 MHz ~~ by Es on April 10,21 and 23, and May 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9; and some Auroraon May4.

Here it is mid-May, and in the San FranciscoBay area it's still raining and we've got sub-50°temperatures. We're still hopefully awaiting theNorth Pacific high pressure region settling in andgiving us some Tropo DX to Hawait .

My wannabeTV DXer friend is bemoaning hisfate with one of these "modern TVs," a Toshiba.Seems he lost the remote control . Hecan get theset's three-digit code with a Universal Remote, butwhen he sets it up, all the set does is blink its channelindicator when he tries to change the channel (orturn it onloff, or anything) .

So, you say, he should get off his duff and tunethe set manually. Easier said than done, there's nochannel selector, just a channel up button andchannel down button. You press one o[ these, andthe set tunes to the next stron¢ local channel. Noway to get it to channel 3 or 6 . This is progress?

We have one letter so far for this erstwhileDXer and any of our readers who may be in a similarsituation (located within line of sight of the TVtowers) .

Walt Breville, 1149 Innsbrook Estates, Wright City,MO 63390 (50 miles west of St. Louis)

I thought fd give this input regarding yourfriend who is a beginningTV DXer . fve teed myhand at this pastime otC and on for the past 20 or soYears. I had similar circumstances ofTV towers vis-tble from my house on Ch. 2, 4, 5, 9, 11, 24, & 30.Yes, an indoor rabbit ear antenna is best for this asoutdoor Yogis simply result in too strong signalsoverloading the set . I found only one solution; Imoved out Into the country 40 qtr miles from thenearest TV towers! Many ofmy neighbors with kidsdid the same, and say it was worth it simply to live ina mote tranc(uil environment, even though theycommute to lobs 50 miles away. (I am single andrecently retired, so I can't say exactly the sametestimony, but to me the vastly better TV and FMDX reception alone makes it worth it!)

As for choice of TV, it is not clear-but to meassay computers (for home use, theApple Macintosh issuperior to the 1BM PC compatibles for ease of use),l like my 1991 vinta e R.C .A . color stereo remotedigital-tuning set, wile someTV DXers like oldersets because of their fine-tuning control for that extrabit of weak-signat boosting adjustment .

Forantenna rotors, I use my hands & arms onthe Yagi antenna mounted on the porch deck just 14ft. above ground-I have a very high location thatmakes up for the lowantenna . fve run intoproblems drilling through the floor and tearing up

the car et to get the twinlead into the house, and fmvery rePuctant to do that for a Cuture rotor cable . Theantenna is a large Radio Shack VHF-UHF Yagi, model unknown as 1 bought it used . Never havecompared it with any others as yet . I use VCRs fornothing but playing vtdeotapes, too manycomplications wuh controls and cables Cor me ; maybesome day fll get around to trying it, though . Wishingthe new TV DXer best of luckl

P .S . I have learned in 20-plus years not to take thisTV-DX hobby serious-no matter what 1 do, I knowfll never approach the totals of this club's top TVDX'ers even if I live a healthy 200 years.

Notes:

1. New semi-local LPTV, rode endent program-ming. IDs a"HTV" (big letters. Was running Iowlbowling show when I observed them .

2. All 3 Mexican UHFs were parallel (22,24, and 26)with "XEQ-9" IDs (quite strong signals!). FromFernando's report a couple months ago, I deducedthe 24 was from Tampico; fll need to; find out fromhim where the other two are.

3. Color bars under KVW. "XHFTX 57" ID in

lower right.

Finally, an opening to the Mexican border to

pick up those newFox stations . I didn't expect to get

the 3XEQ stations, though!

Comments :TheXHOXOIDwas seen under the lopt here .

I thought that the Fs season might be getting off to a

vigorous startwith the April 10 stuff reaching briefly92.5 and 93.5 in Key West, but things so far haven't

"lived up" to that .

K48DS is connected with a local junior toilege("telecourses for credit") often has heavy CCl from

the 48 in Galveston.

Local K02MX LPTV has been runningBloombergInformational TV since late March. For about a yearafter late April 1993 it had Channel Americaprogramming-otherwise since September 12, 1987(with some blessed transmitter down times rangingfrom hours, days, weeks, and a few months) it hasbeen nothing but a CBar ID with 400-Hz tone! Ioften wnsidered myself to be its entire audience .

The one on the 10th was probably much better earlier in themorning . Those on the 12th and 17th were of about equal qualitybut the one on the 17th was more productive .

i. Not much on TV just 4 channels lout many buildin¢s have satellite dishes for Telecatibe, HBO, CNN, etc .) .

UHF - DISH OR YAGI?I have noticed that the subject of parabolic UHF dish performance versus that of the broadbanded UHFCR

yogi has already been discussed in the March, 199"1 V-U DIGEST . Visiting Germany and later Italy,l noted manyof the high-peformance German models in service . Are they really superior to the 2.0 meter American and

Japanese UHF TV dishes? Not necessarily . In order to truly approximate the receiving patterns (deep side nulls, sharp lobes, etc .) one must properly stack these CR yogis and this means compromising on an optimum stacking

distance for the entire UHF TV range . Along with stacking comes the inevitable harness and phasing

considerations. If not properly done, any gain increase from the second antetma is negated.

I was told by a "radio-mechanic" in Torino that parabolic-type UHF antennas are difficult to come by in

Europe, where antenna-stacking really does seem to be king. It was also my impression that their lead-in is of

much higher quality than what is available in North America, and their mast-mounted boosters seemed to be much

better . This lacer aspect might be due to the fact that they do not try to cover as many channels with their boostersthan North Americans do, and they do not seem to have the overload problems that plague areas such as Houstonand l os Angeles . In much of Europe,TV antenna rotators are not necessary, and often hard to come by!

It seems to me (and the V-U Digest articles did not address this) that the actual forward gain comparison

between a good American UHF dish and a stack of two European CR yogis would be extremely close, with

perhaps the dish beating the yogis ever-so-slightly on some parts of the UHF range, and vice-versa on others . Has

anyone from WTFDA actually gonethrough the effort and considerable expense of acquiring European yogis? It

seems to me the results would be interesting, but both theory and practice suggest that the dish would indeed have

the "edge ." I would be interested to see something further on this matter published .
