STaR Charts What is a STaR Chart?
Why Do I Care?
What is it?STaR Chart stands for
Texas School Technology and Readiness Chart
The STaR Chart is an online self assessment developed by the Texas Education Agency’s Educational Technology Advisory Committee (ETAC)
What will we learn today?
•How and why the STaR Chart came in to being in Texas
•What the STaR Chart measures
•How the StaR Chart measures
•How the Teacher STaR Chart differs from the Campus STaR Chart
•How the data collected from the STaR Chart is used by the state
HistoryIn 2004 ETAC need a method to assess two areas of technology.
1) How well campuses and districts were integrating technology across the curriculum as emphasized in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001
2) What was the level of technology preparedness for campuses and districts across the state in an effort fulfill the requirements of No Child Left Behind, Title II, Part D
STaR Chart DataSTaR Chart measures school technology & readiness in four key areas
• Teaching and Learning
• Educator Preparation and Development
• Leadership, Administration and Instructional Support
• Infrastructure for Technology
Giving Meaning to the First Key Area
Teaching and LearningType of technology available to the classroomTechnology used in the classroomCorrelation between technology and curriculum
Giving Meaning to the Second Key Area
Educator Preparation and Development
• Type & depth of professional development completed by faculty• Understanding of the SBEC Technology Application Standards• Application of the SBEC Technology Application Standards
Giving Meaning to the Third Key Area
Leadership, Administration and Instructional Support• Communication of technology vision• Access to instructional support & collaboration • Use of discretionary funds to advance technology
Giving Meaning to the Fourth Key Area
•Number of students per computer•Network and Internet robustness and availability•Other technology available for classroom instruction
Infrastructure for Technology
Assessment Ratings & STaREach key area has 6 individual focus areas or subtopics.
There are four proficiency levels that can be given for any focus area within the STaR Chart Survey.
• Early Tech• Developing Tech• Advanced Tech• Target Tech
Teacher vs. Campus AssessmentTeacher STaR Chart•The teacher’s assessment contains all the self-assessment questions for the four key areas•Teachers rate themselves and their campus
Campus STaR Chart•Averages of all the data from the teacher survey by focus areas and then key area•The campus leader can confirm the proficiency levels suggested by the survey or recommend a change to a different proficiency level
STaR Data is used for……•Creating a district vision of technology
•Technology planning
•Budgeting for resources / Prioritize funding
•Document progress in the Technology Applications TEKS
•Document progress in the SBEC Technology Application Standard for
teachers
•Applying for state funded technology grants (STaR required)
•Tracking progress on the used of NCLB, Title II, Part D

How RRISD’s STaR Results Compare With The State Average
ConclusionsIn any area of learning and growth, whether it be how fast we can run a mile or how complex a math problem we can solve, we need a method to chart our progress. This method must let us know where we are on our journey and point us towards our next goal.
For technology development and technical literacy our method is the STaR Chart . Using this survey in conjunction with the technology TEKS and the technology application standard for teachers is the best way for us to integrate technology into our curriculum and improve the technical abilities of our teachers.
