ST. HELEN As disciples of Jesus in the universal Church we are called to become in Jesus’ own words “a house of prayer for all peoples.” Thus we welcome all, the stranger, the lost, those who have never known Jesus and those who have fallen away for whatever reason. We seek to spread the full gospel: “Woe to us if we don’t spread the gospel.” Our practical goal is to utilize and dispense the seven sacraments as instruments of God’s sanctification and healing, under the guidance of the Arch- bishop of Santa Fe. We set our sights on mature Christian witness for the building up of God’s spiritual house, the new people of God that He has chosen to be his own, and chosen to announce His praises. Our prayer is to become committed disciples of our Lord Jesus and become “a house of prayer for all peoples.” 1600 South Avenue O, Portales, New Mexico 88130 Email: [email protected] www.Sthelenportales.org Church Office: 575-356-4241, Fax 575-359-1721 Hours: Monday 1:00-5:00 pm; Tuesday-Thursday 8:30 am-5:00 pm Friday 8:30 am-4:30 pm

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Immaculate Conception Immaculate Conception refers to the conception of Holy Mary by her mother Saint Anne. This belief was held by the Christian people for a long period. But this doctrine was proclaimed

as a formal religious dogma by pope Pius-IX on December 8, 1854 by a Papal Bull namely Ineffabilis Deus. This feast means that the Blessed Virgin Mary was kept free from original sin from her moment of conception. This feast also means that from the moment of conception Blessed Virgin Mary received the sanctifying grace that would normally come to others with baptism after birth. Blessed Mother Mary is free from all sins whether original or personal. Pope Sixtus-IV authorized all dioceses on February 28, 1476 to celebrate this feast but without using the word 'Immaculate'. The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared at Lourdes, France from February 11, 1858 to July 16, 1858 to St. Bernadette Marie Soubirous. St. Bernadette confirmed later that the Holy Mary told her 'I am the Immaculate Conception', When Brenadette asked the name of the mother. The apparition was approved by the Holy See on January 18, 1862 and Bernadette was canonized as a saint on December 6, 1833 by pope Pius-XI. Therefore since the Mother Mary herself has proclaimed her as the Immaculate Conception, this religious dogma is true and must be believed and celebrated with all piety. United States of America, Ireland, Philippines and Spain are certain nations consider themselves under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception.
