From the Desk of Father Steve: The Power and Beauty of Well-Crafted Hymns

“Down in adoration falling, Lo! the sacred Host we hail; Lo! o'er ancient forms departing,

newer rites of grace prevail; faith for all defects supplying, where the feeble senses fail.”

Hymn for the Rite of Benediction:

English Translation of Tantum Ergo

Composed by St. Thomas Aquinas

13th Century

Whether the weather feels like it or not, summer is upon us- it began officially last Friday. And summer time is great for many reasons, one of the principle ones being that it brings the few months of warm, comfortable weather that we cherish up here on the North Shore. It’s also a time for a little

more relaxation, recreation, and light-hearted fun. And I’ve decided that I’d like to reflect that in my bulletin articles over these summer months. So, what I’d like to do each week is take a verse or two from one of the hymns or chants that we use on a regular basis at Mass, and discuss the power and beauty of the lyrics- what they mean, and what we can learn from them.

Hymns and chants have a long-standing history in the liturgy. Singing is a special way of praying and praising God, and hymns and chants have been composed for use in the liturgy and in prayer since the very beginnings of the Church all the way down to our present day. And of course, the unique quality of hymnody and chant as a type of music is that the lyrics are often written in a poetic style. Poetry is important to the life of the Catholic Church because poetry and symbolism can give expression to the wonder and awe that should surround the sacred mysteries of the faith in a way that simple prose cannot. The imagery and symbolism often presented in hymn lyrics and poetic chants are an art form that gives some expression to the inexpressible- while they cannot describe the mysteries of faith completely (because no human being or instrument can!), they shed a unique light on the mysteries of our faith.

And, they also are meant to teach the faith. Remember that for many of the early centuries in the Church’s history, there was no such thing as a printing press. Copies of the Bible, of the prayer book for Mass, of hymns and songs had to be made by hand. So, because of this, copies were few and far between- your average lay person most likely had no access to a Bible, or to written prayer books, or even to hymn books. But what could be easily done was to teach people a song or hymn, because when we put words to music, our mind more easily recalls them. So hymns are meant to give expression to beauty through music and through poetic lyrics, but they are also meant to teach the faith, to express doctrine and provide an easy way for the people to recite the truths of the faith. This is why it’s so important that the words which make up the lyrics of our hymns and chants are not only beautiful to the ear, but also are theologically and doctrinally accurate and correct. Just as a beautiful hymn that has striking and powerfully crafted lyrics can inspire the heart and mind to prayer, hymns with lyrics that are theologically or doctrinally incorrect can easily lead to people having false beliefs about the faith.

That’s one of the reasons why our Church over the centuries has incorporated certain select hymns and chants into his tradition for use in the liturgy- the Church has recognized the beauty, theological accuracy and profound expression of the Christian mystery presented in certain hymns. One of the Church’s greatest hymn writers was St. Thomas Aquinas. St. Thomas was an absolutely brilliant theologian- perhaps one of the most brilliant in the history of the entire Church. But he also had an incredibly humble and sincere faith. He composed many of the hymns traditionally connected to the feast of Corpus Christi, which we celebrated last Sunday, as well as several other Eucharistic hymns that we might be familiar with, including the Tantum Ergo, which is used for the Rite of Eucharistic Benediction. I included one verse of that hymn above- note the simple and profound beauty as he describes the role and power of the Holy Eucharist as the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies and the faith necessary to recognize Its sacred presence. It is truly a beautiful hymn!

So, if you have a favorite hymn that you would like for me to comment upon in my bulletin article this summer, or if there is a particular verse of a Church hymn that has always perplexed you, send me a note or an email and let me know. Perhaps I could use your favorite hymn for a bulletin article in this summer series!

God bless you! ~ Fr. Steve
