ENGINEERING PROBLEMSSOLUTIONS AND PRODUCTS

12/10 E&OE

Air and dirt within the system water causes corrosion, system noise and inefficient heat transfer. These are significant problems that can occur after the system is operational. We give full consideration to the efficient removal of air and dirt, taking into account the physical principles (Henry's Law) involved, and provide a full solution in accordance with the stated flow rates for heating and cooling pipes. Information about boiler or chiller location, system head, system flow rates, etc. is gathered. We then spend the necessary time in reviewing this information, so that we can recommend the most efficient model for each system.

Thermal pipe expansion is a considerable problem that must not be overlooked by the pipe system designer and installer. ome solutions may not require any expansion joints at all; if the thermal expansion can be accommodated using the inherent flexibility of the pipe itself, we will inform the engineer. However, if natural flexibility is insufficient, we will be able to prove that by calculation and then, and only then, will we recommend expansion joints and other related products. Additionally, we can quote daily rates for computer aided pipe stress analysis using “Caesar II Pipe Stress Analysis Software” by one of our qualified engineers.

S

Pipe Solutions Ltd. do not just sell products. We place particular emphasis on providing our clients with an engineered solution. For any problems related to thermal pipe expansion, vibration and noise control, or de-aeration and dirt removal, we can offer an efficient and cost-effective strategy for dealing with these issues.

Our ability to provide this service is founded on our vast combined years of experience in this particular engineering field. We have the knowledge to solve these problems, and we always aim to make the client aware of the potential solutions that exist.

We tackle these challenges head on, providing the designer and installer with a full evaluation and scheme consideration. We always aim to offer the benefits of our expertise as early as possible in the overall design process; this promotes a more integrated design, which can often be more economic than a retrofitted one.

Our approach is to always talk with the client's engineers, determine the nature of the building or structure, and how the piped services have been laid out. We then spend the necessary time in reviewing the wealth of information, reading the layout drawings, calculating, marking up drawings with pertinent comments and returning a technically sound submission for further discussion with the engineer.

Our team of engineers, who include registered members of the Institute of Acoustics, can undertake the design of vibration isolation systems. We give full consideration to the NR levels and other criteria stated in the project and acoustic specifications. Once again, only if a natural solution is insufficient, will we recommend vibration control products. We will complete the calculations to show isolation efficiencies that can be achieved, and how the plant or pipework weights can be distributed over the vibration isolators.

Pipe Solutions Ltd.'s growing success is due not only to the wide range of products we offer, but because we provide an unrivalled level of technical advice, service, and support to our customers.

APPLICATIONSCAESAR II from COADE evaluates the structural responses and stresses of piping systems to international codes and standards.

As a registered user (No. we work with the latest version of the software to provide comprehensive pipe stress analysis services.

Our COADE qualified engineers develop analysis models, while clearly indicating areas of concern and providing an excellent idea of the piping system's flexibility. Colour coded stress models and animated displacements for any stress load case are available.

Besides the evaluation of a piping system’s response to thermal, deadweight and pressure loads, CAESAR II analyses the effects of wind, support settlement, seismic loads and wave loads.

CAESAR II also allows for the detailed modelling of expansion joints and restraints such as anchors, guides and skids, as well as selecting the proper springs for supporting systems with large vertical deflections. Dynamic analysis capabilities include modal, harmonic, response spectrum and time history analysis.

INERTIA BASESModel VIB

APPLICATIONSInertia bases are designed to reduce noise and vibration transmission between plant equipment and the building structure. They are usually supported on helical steel spring mounts and are used to:-

Provide stability to a system.Lower the centre of mass.Reduce coupled mode problems.Minimise the effect of external forces.Ensure an even load distribution.Add rigidity to the plant / equipment.Reduce the effect of centre of mass estimates.Provide suitable anti-vibration mount fixings.Reduce vibratory movement due to plant start-up and run-downas the resonant frequency is passed.

SPECIFICATIONVIB - a formed steel frame (pre-galvanised) fitted with steel reinforcing bars, BZP steel ‘outrigger’ mounting brackets and supplied with anti-vibration mounts appropriate to the plant type and the category / efficiency of the vibration isolation required.

Heavy steel sections, such as RSC and RSA, may be used where necessary. These can incorporate ‘inboard’ mounting brackets.

Inertia Bases are normally supplied to site ready for filling with concrete.

A concrete mix having a ratio of 4 parts gravel : 2 parts sand : 1 part cement should be used to give a concrete density of approximately

32,400 to 2,500 kg/m .

Heavy steel inertia plates can be used for small plant items where an inertia base would be too bulky.

OPERATING PARAMETERSEnsure operation is within the following parameters:-

The vertical distance to the combined centre of mass from the top of the spring mounts must be less than horizontal distance.

The spring mounts must be outside the ‘boundary’ of the rotating mass.

All equipment must be rigidly coupled together as one mass on a single platform.

The mass of the platform must be very large compared to the mass of the plant, i.e. the platform must be twice that of the plant.

Flexible pipe connectors must be of the 'restrained' or ‘tied’ type.

PRE-LOADED SPRING MOUNTSModel VSMPR

APPLICATIONSHeavy duty pre-loaded restrained spring mounts are designed to reduce noise and vibration transmission from plant items, whilst providing restraint for both horizontal and vertical forces. They offer a height advantage over conventional restrained spring mounts because they can be supplied pre-loaded (pre-compressed).

These models have a helical steel compression spring which is fitted in a heavy duty steel formed ‘top-hat’ restraint housing, complete with steel base plate and pre-loading studs. A thick ribbed rubber sheet is supplied to fit below the baseplate, together with rubber isolating bushes for the baseplate holes.

They can also be used for any plant that requires restraint against internal or external forces such as start up inertia or wind loads etc.

For example, they can be used for the following applications:-

Chillers Cooling Towers Large FansPump Skids Packaged Plant Rooms BoilersGenerators Power Supply Units CHP Units

SPECIFICATIONVSMPR - a black or BZP helical steel spring enclosed in a BZP steel restraint housing. An acoustic ribbed rubber sheet is used beneath the steel base plate.

Standard Deflection (i.e. 25mm), High Deflection (i.e. 50mm) and Very High Deflection (i.e. 75mm) models are available.

Bespoke load capacities are available as the project / plant design dictates; individual springs are designed to BS1726-1 and manufactured to order. Housings can, if required, be designed to incorporate particular plant fixings, such as holes, slots or studs.

SPRING HANGERSModel VSH

APPLICATIONSSpring hangers are designed to reduce noise and vibration transmission between pipes and the building structure.

These models have a helical steel spring combined with rubber isolating elements which are used in compression.

They can be used on any pipe service where vibration / movement is a problem.

They can also be used to provide vibration isolated support for Vertical In Line (VIL) pumps, where the pump is designed to be an integral component of the pipework eliminating the use of flexible connectors and inertia bases.

Spring hangers are also used to support pipework subjected to expansion / contraction and allow for the vertical displacement of the pipe whilst still carrying dead weight - in this instance they are known as variable load supports. They are not to be confused with constant load supports (model CLS), which are also available.

SPECIFICATIONVSH - a standard model with colour coded helical steel spring with acoustic rubber end cap fitted within a BZP steel box and provided with a BZP threaded steel drop rod and connector piece.

Standard Deflection (i.e. 25mm), High Deflection (i.e. 50mm) and Very High Deflection (i.e. 75mm) models are available.

Drop rod size is limited by safe working loads in BS3974 Part 1 as follows: M10 = 360kg, M12 = 530kg, M16 = 1010kg, M20 = 1580kg.

NOTE: a 50mm deflection ‘B’ spring can be nested inside a 50mm deflection ‘C’ spring to provide resultant load capacities other than those detailed in the table above; e.g. a 400kg Purple ‘B’ spring inside a 1000kg Blue ‘C’ spring will give a 1400kg load capacity. These are fitted with M20 fixings.

POSITIONAL SPRING HANGERSModel VSHP

APPLICATIONSSpring hangers are designed to reduce noise and vibration transmission between pipes and the building structure.

These models have a helical steel spring combined with rubber isolating elements which are used in compression.

These positional models allow the pipes to be fitted and levelled with ease, ensuring that even when the system is filled, the pipes remain level, leaving transfer of the pipe weight to the steel spring until last.

They can be used on any pipe service where vibration / movement is a problem.

They can also be used to provide vibration isolated support for Vertical In Line (VIL) pumps, where the pump is designed to be an integral component of the pipework eliminating the use of flexible connectors and inertia bases.

SPECIFICATIONVSHP - a positional model with colour coded helical steel spring with acoustic rubber end cap fitted within a BZP steel box with additional load /positioning plate and provided with a BZP threaded steel drop rod and connector piece.

OPERATING PARAMETERS

Maximum Installation Pressure = 8 BarSystem De-aeration Range = 0 to 70 Ambient Temperature Range = 0 to 45

The user may select between two de-aeration modes:

Turbo de-aeration - quick and efficient de-aeration directly after installation without any breaks between the de-aeration intervals.

Normal de-aeration - energy-saving mode with longer intervals between the de-aeration cycles. De-aeration takes place only when necessary.

Maximum System Volume = 150,000 litresWorking Pressure Range = 1 to 8 Bar

ºCºC

NOTE: Connections to the system pipework must be made to the side of the horizontal pipe, never to the top or bottom of the pipe. Ingress of debris will prevent this equipment from operating.

APPLICATIONSPressure step de-aerators are designed to provide active de-aeration of micro-bubbles and dissolved air from heating and cooling systems in high rise buildings.

This model is designed to create the most favourable conditions for efficient air removal where centrifugal or micro-bubble air separators can not be used, for example when the system head is too great.

The basic operation involves isolating a volume of the system water in the de-aeration vessel, inducing a pressure drop with a pump to liberate dissolved air, venting and final return of the de-aerated water to the system.

APPLICATIONSBrass separators are designed to remove air, air and dirt, or dirt only from heating and cooling systems.

These models slow the velocity of the water in its enlarged chamber, where the water impacts onto a dynamic concentrator.

For air separation, the concentrator merges bubbles and micro-bubbles using the principles of cohesion, which then float to the top of the brass chamber from where they are vented to the outside.

For dirt separation, the concentrator allows dirt particles to sink to the bottom of the brass chamber, where they

can be drained off periodically .

OPERATING PARAMETERSStandard Flow Rate Flanged modelsWorking Temperature = 120 Working Pressure = 10 Barg.Cold Test Pressure = 15 Barg. Max’ Water Velocity = 1.5m/s.

NOTE: the above maximum water velocity is recommended for high separation efficiency; water velocities up to 3.0m/s and thus higher flow rates can be accommodated, but this will result in a reduction of separation efficiency and an increase in pressure loss, unless you use the High Flow Rate model.

DN65 PN16 flanges to EN1092 have 8 equi-spaced bolt holes, compared to 4 equi-spaced bolt holes as with the obsolete BS4504. EN1092 states that flanges in this DN and PN may be supplied with 4 bolt holes and that where flanges are required with 4 bolt holes, these may be supplied by agreement between manufacturer and purchaser. However, it remains common practice in the UK for DN65 PN16 flanges to be supplied with 4 bolt holes. Two mating flanges having different number of bolt holes can still be bolted together, but consideration must be given to whether holes are on-centre or off-centre for each side of the flange joint. This is generally not a problem unless a specific orientation of equipment is required.
