AUGUST 20 2017mdash TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

IF YOU OR A FAMILY MEMBER IS HOSPITALIZEDhellip

By and large the only way our pastors and ministers of Eucharist will know about it is if someone calls the parish office and lets us know Because of privacy laws the hospital cannot call churches to tell us who is there unless the patient upon admission or upon specific request tells the staff they are Catholic and to which parish they belong AUTOMATIC WITHDRAWAL HAVE YOU SIGNED UP YET You can help the parish rely on your support contribution by signing up to have it taken from your bank account automatically each week or month Whether you are at mass or on vacation your support will reliably flow into the parish account Sign up forms are in the back of church or call Tina in the parish office for more information

This week Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Isaiah 5616-7 Romans 1113-1529-32 Matthew 1521-28

Background Jesus and his disciples venture off into non-Jewish Gentile territory (Tyre

and Sidon) and he is accosted by a Gentile woman who wants him to heal her daughter Jesusrsquo own ministry to this point and his instructions to his disciples has been to concentrate only on ldquothe house of Israelrdquo or the Jewish community The womanrsquos persistence even in the face of silence and insults so impress Jesus however that he heals her

daughter Most scholars believe this text reflect the conflict in Matthewrsquos community of welcoming many Gentiles into a largely Jewish-Christian community This story indicates how even Jesus could not resist their tremendous faith How does this text speak to the divisions

among us today Especially the divisions in our nation

As Catholics we are called to take concrete measures to overcome the misunderstanding ignorance competition and fear that stand in the way of genuinely welcoming the stranger in our midst and enjoying the communion that is our destiny as Children of God Welcoming the Stranger Among Us Unity in Diversity A Statement of the US Catholic Bishops

August 122017 WASHINGTONmdashCardinal Daniel N DiNardo of Galveston-

Houston President of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops has issued the following

statement in response to the violent protests in Charlottesville Virginia that has

left three dead and at least 19 injured

On behalf of the bishops of the United States I join leaders from around the nation in condemning the violence and hatred that have now led to one death and mul-tiple injuries in Charlottesville Virginia We offer our prayers for the family and loved ones of the person who was killed and for all those who have been injured We join our voices to all those calling for calm

The abhorrent acts of hatred on display in Charlottesville are an attack on the unity of our nation and therefore summon us all to fervent prayer and peaceful action The bishops stand with all who are oppressed by evil ideology and entrust all who suf-fer to the prayers of StPeter Claver as we approach his feast day We also stand ready to work with all people of goodwill for an end to racial violence and for the building of peace in our communities
