DSC’s Onsite Lunch & Learn with Students

Dean Snyder Construction recently started a new program called “Onsite Lunch & Learn” in order to help connect with students interested in pursuing a profession in a trades program. Whether it’s a career path in welding, architecture, construction engineering, or carpentry, DSC is providing a unique opportunity for trades students and industry leaders to get together.

The first Onsite Lunch & Learn was held with Garner-Hayfield-Ventura School District’s Industrial Technology Department. DSC brought Casey’s pizza for the students and had leaders from both DSC and NIACC’s Building Trades Program explain the benefits of the demand for skilled trades workers, hiring at DSC, scholarship opportunities, internships, the Building Trades Program, and answered questions from the students. DSC also took the students to visit the Christensen Farms Bio-Secure Truck/Trailer Wash jobsite in Garner.

DSC also hosted Onsite Lunch & Learns with students interested in the construction trades from Mason City High School, Clear Lake High School, Charles City High School, and NIACC. These students had the opportunity to tour DSC's job site with Cambrex in Charles City. Several more Onsite Lunch & Learns are planned for the spring.

DSC’s Field Safety Coordinator Russ DeFord will be attending the Master Builders of Iowa “Annual Safety Day” during their upcoming winter conference. During the event, Russ will take in educational training

sessions while also having a chance to mingle with other construction company’s safety directors. Russ is especially looking forward to the session with updates on OSHA rules and regulations. “In our field of work we always have to be adapting,” Russ said. “Whether it’s to the weather or to new tools, equipment, or OSHA rules, we have to keep ourselves at the forefront of new knowledge. This is how we keep our safety program at its best.” OSHA is set to increase fines this year for the first time in 25 years. The max penalty for a willful violation will go to $127,000 from the current $70,000. Fines for “other than serious” would increase to over $10,000 from $7,000.

WWA Holds Student

Design Competition

Taking in a Safety Day

RUSS’S SAFETY

CORNER

On Thursday, December 10, 2015, WWA held their first Annual Student Collaborative Design Competition. Throughout the morning/early afternoon, more than 30 students from six different north Iowa schools presented their final designs at the yin Mason City.

Students worked throughout the fall to design a collaborative, multi–use, and innovative learning space for an imaginary spot on their current high school property. Each team appeared in front of a panel of six local judges. Teams had 30 minutes to explain how their design would benefit their school, show their floor plans, site plans, and renderings/models, and answer questions from the judges.

The winning team was from Osage High School and won $1,000 to go towards classroom updates and materials. The 2nd place team was Mason City High School, and they received $500; the 3rd place team was Garner-Hayfield-Ventura, and they won $250.

Competing schools included: Cedar Falls, Charles City, Clear Lake, Garner-Hayfield-Ventura, Mason City, and Osage.

DSC Completes Clear Lake Kwik Star in 18 Weeks

The North Iowa Oral Surgery facility in Mason City was recently recognized with a Merit Award from the Design Build Institute - Mid-America Region (DBIA-MAR) in the Hospital/Healthcare Under $25 Million category.

DBIA-MAR awards recognize projects that successfully demonstrate the application of design-build principles, including interdisciplinary collaboration in the early stages of the project and acceptance of single-entity risk. All projects submitted for the award must have been completed on time and on budget, and they

exemplify the principles of interdisciplinary teamwork, innovation, and problem solving.

Mark Kroemer, architect with WWA, is shown accepting the award in Kansas City from the 2015 Design-Build Awards Competition. This is the second design award for North Iowa Oral Surgery; they also received the Dental Office Design of the Year in 2014. DSC, WWA, and Practice Design Group of Buda, Texas, completed this design-build project in 2013.

North Iowa Oral Surgery Wins Second Design Award

Kwik Star is officially open and serving customers. A ribbon cutting was held for the new 7,500 SF gas station/convenience store/truck stop on October 20, 2015.

Two New Projects Underway at Cambrex

Strong demand for their products has led Cambrex to identify the need

for a second significant expansion project in less than three years to

increase manufacturing capacity at their Charles City facility. DSC has

been working with the company since 1992 on a variety of projects and

has once again returned with DSC Design Group to help with the

expansion.

Two new design-build projects are happening simultaneously this

time. A new 45,000 SF pre-engineered warehouse is under construction

and will store raw ingredients and finished product. The warehouse

will include pallet racking, a 2-level office area, loading docks, cooler

space, and a receiving office.

The other project is a new production facility with a 17,000 SF first floor

and 16,000 SF second floor. Labeled Pharma 3, this new facility will

manufacture active pharmaceutical ingredients. Crews started at the

end of April 2015 on Pharma 3 and will be completed by March 2016.

Also new to the Clear Lake

office is Project Manager

Cameron Byrnes. Cam has his

Master Plumbing License and

over ten years of hands-on

experience in HVAC and

plumbing design, estimating,

project management, and

installation services. He will be responsible for

managing the plumbing and mechanical work on a

wide variety of construction projects. Cam lives in

Clear Lake with his wife and four children.
