The term Special Education encompasses all educational services provided to students with disabilities and/ or identified special educational needs.

Diagnostic, evaluative and supporting institutions
Students’ disabilities and special educational needs are investigated and recorded by the Centres of Differential Diagnosis and Support for Special Educational Needs (KEDDY) and certified by the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs and/or by relevant centres of other Ministries.

Special Education seeks
• omnibus and harmonious development of SEN and disabled students’ personality,• improvement and enhancement of students’ abilities and skills, to enable possible integration into mainstream school,• students’ inclusion in the educational system, in social life and in business activity, based on their corresponding potentials,• mutual acceptance, harmonious social integration, equal opportunities in social development.

SEN and disabled students: where do they attend?
•In mainstream schools with parallel support by special educational staff,•In a specially organized and appropriately staffed Induction Classes, which operate within mainstream and vocational schools,•In Special Education School Units (SMEAE), such as Special Needs Nursery Schools, Special Needs Primary Schools and Special Needs Secondary Schools,• Homeschooling.

Qualified Teachers
• Teachers with a relevant PhD (SEN, disabilities, other),• Teachers with a relevant Master’s degree (SEN, disabilities, other), • Teachers who received a two-year training in Special Education, offered by Greek Universities,• Teachers with a university degree in Special Education,• Teachers with Disabilities,• Teachers who are parents of SEN and/or disabled children,• Teachers that attended seminars in Special Education.
