To those of you who, like the shepherds, have had to hurry to make your way here; to those of you who, like the wise men, are looking for meaning and purpose and reason for your life; to Mary who has come this evening with the innocence of a young heart; to Joseph who is here because a spouse or friend has brought you with them; to all, we invite you to hover close to the manger and here behold the babe who is born among us, full of grace and truth. Come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!

P C (unison)

O God, who has made this most holy night to shine with brightness of the true Light, grant, we beseech Thee, that as we have known on earth the mysteries of that Light, we may also come to know the fullness of its joys in heaven; through the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord. Amen.

T L ’ P (in unison)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

C B *C # 40 Joy to the World

Joy to the world! The Lord is come; let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and heaven and nature sing.

Joy to the world! The Savior reigns; let us our songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

He rules the world with truth and grace, and makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness, and wonders of His love, And wonders of His love, and wonders, wonders of His Love.

Leader: The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; People: Those who lived in the land of deep darkness—on them light has shined. Leader: For a child has been born for us, a son given to us. People: And we will call him Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Leader: Tonight we light the four Advent candles and the Christ candle. The first candle reminds us to wait upon the promises of God; the second candle reminds us to prepare our hearts for the coming of Messiah; the third candle reminds us of the joy of this holy season; the fourth candle reminds us to proclaim the message of hope and love to our troubled world. Tonight we light the Christ candle that reminds us that Christ is the light of the world. May we keep this light bright in our lives throughout the year and share it will all we meet.

S M What Child Is This? String Quartet T P Isaiah 9:2-7 Pastor Dave Gowen

Leader: The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined. Thou hast multiplied the nation, thou hast increased its joy; they rejoice before thee as with joy at the harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, thou hast broken as on the day of Midian. For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire. People: For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be upon his shoulder, and his name will be called "Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David, and over his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and for evermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

O Holy Night, Holy Child arr. M. Helman Faith Ringers T C S Luke 2:1-7 Rev. Elizabeth Kuehl

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. This was the first enrollment, when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to

be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered. And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

A The Shepherd’s Carol arr. D. Forrest Faith Choir and String Quartet

Carols so sweet, Angels did sing. As lately we watched o’er our fields through the night. A star there was seen of such glorious light. All through the night, angels did sing Carols so sweet of the birth of a King. All through the night, angels did sing Carols so sweet of the birth of a King. His throne is a manger, His court is a loft. But hosts of bright angels, in strains sweet and soft, Him they proclaim, our Christ by name, And earth, sky, and air straight are filled with his fame. Then shepherds, be joyful, salute your new King, Let hills and vales ring to the song that ye sing. Blest be the hour, welcome the morn For Christ our dear Savior on earth now is born. All through the night, angels did sing Carols so sweet, for the birth of a King. Carols so sweet, for the birth of a King.

T C S C … Luke 2:8-20

Leader: And in that region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. People: And the angel said to them, "Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!" Leader: When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us." And they went with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they saw it they made known the saying which had been told them concerning this child; and all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. People: But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. 5

Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

*C #44 ( . 1, 4) O Little Town of Bethlehem ST. LOUIS

O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light; The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel!

R “Enchantment” Rev. Dr. H Timothy Halverson A Lovely Child, Holy Child D. Johnson Faith Choir and String Quartet

Lovely Child, Holy Child, gentle, mild, undefiled; Infant King, fairest King, gifts we’ll bring and anthems sing: Alleluia, alleluia.

Child of light, born tonight, our delight, promise bright; Child so fair: see him there; now declare him everywhere: Alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia!

Rest thy head, sweetest head; gifts we’ll spread at thy bed. Jesus Lord, be adored, may this word now be outpoured: Alleluia, alleluia.

To this boy, our great joy, we employ hymns of joy; Child so fair; see him there; now declare him everywhere. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
