● Goals should be challenging, but also realistic

● If you set a unachievable goal, you will feel unmotivated and unhappy

● The goal must be meaningful to you; you need an emotional tie with the goal, or you will have difficulties finding motivation

Ambers Story

● Amber loves life and other people, but she feels like she makes one bad decision after another.

She feels that sometimes her life lacks purpose even though she works hard and wants to do

the right thing.

Directions: Read the paragraph below and then fill in what you think Amber

should have done differently in the situation with the goal setting process.

Story: Amber is an outgoing, social teen. She loves to laugh and to have fun

with others. Monday, during lunch, she announced that she is having a party

that Friday night. All day people told her that they would come. Since she was

not sure how many would attend her party, she ordered quantities of snacks

and soda to be delivered on Friday morning. Then, she bought a new dress to

wear. ON Wednesday she spent the evening making up party games and

activities. By Thursday she sat down with her mother to go over her party

activities. Her mother was angry because her aunt and her six children were

due to arrive Friday morning. Friday, Amber went to school in a bad mood

because she had to tell everyone that the party was off.
