Presented by Gualala Arts and taking place during the Smithsonian Institute's Jazz Appreciation Month of April, this highly regarded festival captures inspired, original jazz art work, whale education, jazz films, poetry, an annual Chowder Challenge tasting and several live jazz concerts in atmospheric and beautiful settings, conducive to a special coastal experience. The venues include wineries and restaurants, inns from Timber Cove to Little River, a wine bar, casino, the classically restored Arena Theater and the Gualala Arts Center nestled in the coastal redwoods.

Entertainment, inspiration and education, the uplifting goals of this Festival, are epitomized by outreach to local students through school presentations. This year "The Many Faces of Jazz Music" will introduce young people to the joy and diversity of America’s indigenous art form and encourage youthful enthusiasm for it.

Jazz as defined by indigenous and spontaneous melodic and rhythmic improvisation is indeed a vital, essential and hugely significant cultural art form, and is unique to the American heritage, as evidenced by last year’s gala opening of the prestigious SF Jazz Center. All styles of this musical expression are presented at this Festival.

We are pleased to announce as part of the Festival "A Season of Brubeck - to Dave with Gratitude," a series of events that will honor the legacy of jazz legend Dave Brubeck and will extend the Festival past its usual April and May schedule. The planned events will include film and live concerts, and all Festival performers will be including at least one Brubeck piece as part of their Whale & Jazz performance. Our thanks to Festival Sponsor Andrea A. Lunsford for her generous support.

We are honored by your attendance, as the Festival's life force is dependent upon spirited support and appreciation. We love and welcome your interest and participation!

Presented by Jodi Smith, Executive Director of Naked Whale Research (NaWhaRe), this lecture will cover an unusual Killer Whale incident. In 1997 Bremerton, Washington locals woke up to find 19 fish-eating killer whales in their small backyard inlet. Long-time researchers quickly determined that the whales were fine and would likely leave after one week. What ensued, however, was a 30 day struggle to understand why the whales stayed within the inlet, attempts at protecting them from the public at large, and the story of how a novice whale biologist helped finally escort them out.

A Season of Brubeck - To Dave with Gratitude Working in accord with The Brubeck Institute, University of the Pacific, Stockton CA this year’s Sonoma – Mendocino Coast Whale & Jazz Festival - “A Season of Brubeck – To Dave with Gratitude” - celebrates the revered pianist, composer, educator, cultural ambassador and social justice advocate. Dave passed on in 2012 at age 92 and was still going strong musically. Brubeck believed in “the power of music to transform lives as well as to enlighten and entertain.” When once asked how he would like to be remembered, he replied “as someone who opened doors.” His aspiration was a perfect connection to Gualala Arts Global Harmony Series, “Encouraging Global Harmony by sharing cultures through the arts.”

To honor the musical legacy of Brubeck, the majority of this year’s Sonoma – Mendocino Whale & Jazz Festival artists will feature at least one of Brubeck’s compositions in performance. Festival Music Coordinator Fred Adler and the Festival committee has put together an impressive slate of Brubeck themed presentations and concerts that begin in April and continue through September. We are also grateful for the generosity of Andrea A. Lunsford, whose Festival Sponsorship makes this special tribute possible.

Slide show and talk about Dave Brubeck's impact on 20th century western culture and all aspects of his legacy by Australian-born Simon Rowe. In addition to being the Director of The Brubeck Institute, Rowe is an accomplished jazz pianist who will perform selected Brubeck compositions as part of this special evening.

Brubeck's long-time bassist, Eugene Wright, the only living member of the famous quartet's "Take Five" years, will speak to the audience via audio or Skype about the historic "Good Will Ambassador Tours" of the '50s that spanned the globe. Sponsored by the U.S. Sate Department, these tours introduce the uniquely American jazz sound to audiences around the globe.

The Brubeck Brothers Quartet features two members of one of America’s most accomplished musical families, Dan Brubeck, drums, and Chris Brubeck, bass and trombone, joined by superb musicians Chuck Lamb, piano and Mike DeMicco, guitar. This world renowned group never fails to bring audiences to a frenzy with its non-stop dynamic pulse.

The 12th Annual Sonoma - Mendocino Coast Whale & Jazz Festival Main Event and the finale to A Season of Brubeck - To Dave with Gratitude, this Dave Brubeck tribute performance will spotlight the Eric Mintel Quartet. Featuring Mintel, piano, Nelson Hill, alto, soprano sax and flute, Jack Hegyi, electric bass and Dave Mohn, drums, this Quartet’s performance will be a fitting climax to the Festival. Mintel’s piano virtuosity comes as close to duplicating Brubeck’s revered and identifiable style as is possible. Mintel will premier his brand new composition, “To Dave With Gratitude,” written especially for this year’s Festival Main Event concert. Ron Crotty, Brubeck’s bassist on his original early 1950s recordings, will be special honored guest joining the Quartet. The 2015 Festival Youth Discovery, a young drummer, will exchange explosive solos on Brubeck’s consistently requested composition “Take Five.” Mintel’s group specializes in Brubeck compositions and has performed at both the Clinton and Obama White House.

Pacific Piecemakers Quilt Guild Presents:

Pacific Piecemakers Quilt Guild's (PPQG) 19th annual Quilt Challenge event is based on the theme “Above and Beyond,” which invites quilters to look beyond the ordinary for inspiration and to stretch their skills and vision into new territory. This year's theme is meant to encourage a broad variety of interpretation and expression, both literal and abstract.

Even before PPQG was formed in 1996, local quilters felt it important to have an inclusive and welcoming venue for those who enjoyed making quilts. They began the "challenge" tradition, which has continued for over 2 decades, giving coastal quilters both an incentive to learn and use new skills, and an opportunity to show their work.

PPQG will also introduce its Art in the Redwoods Quilt Raffle prize, “Celestial Magic,” expertly quilted by Sharon Malachowski and pieced and finished by Joyce Gaudet, Renata Lopez, Dee Goodrich, Laura Hamilton and Judy Riddle. Proceeds from the raffle benefits the Gualala Arts Young Artist Scholarship Fund, which has awarded over 50 local graduating seniors who are interested in pursuing a career in the arts scholarships totaling over $50,000 since its inception 15 years ago. Raffle tickets are $2 each, three for $5, seven for $10, or fifteen for $20. “Celestial Magic” will be on display at the Arts Center through Art in the Redwoods and the winner will be selected on Sunday, August 16 at 3 p.m. You need not be present to win. Tickets can be purchased at the Gualala Arts Center and the Dolphin Gallery.

Two of the four basics elements - earth and fire - play a key role in the artistic expression of Barbara Tocher, who is both a ceramicist and a candle creator, sometimes incorporating both interests in one piece.

Judy Keston’s work reflects her love of nature and of the wonders found in everyday scenes seen through new perspectives. Her work appeals to the traveler trying to capture a special moment and to the longtime native who sees a familiar scene in a new light.

LECTURE SERIES PRESENTS FENG SHUI WITH MEGHAN DIGGINS

THURSDAY, APRIL 23, 2015 AT 7 P.M. GUALALA ARTS CENTER COLEMAN AUDITORIUM

$5 AT THE DOOR Many who hear the term “feng shui” think of rearranging the furniture, but in her talk on about this complex subject Meghan Diggins will be explaining the shamanic roots and the multiple layers of Classical feng shui, which differs from the concept most Westerners are familiar with.

About forty years ago Black Hat feng shui, the typical Western perception of the Chinese philosophical system, was imported from Tibet by Thomas Lin Yun first in Berkeley during the cultural revolution of the 1960s. It was a simplified version of a classical tradition that goes back to at least 4,000 B.C.

Diggins will explore Feng Shui’s roots in detail and include an explanation of the process involved in a traditional consultation, including energy flow, celestial input, harmonizing the five elements of the Chinese medicine wheel, and simple architectural and terrestrial form impacts. She will present examples demonstrating how Classical Feng Shui incorporates an individual’s astrological charts and other factors of the human and natural environment to effect desired outcomes.

Although Diggins recognizes that it may be difficult to believe that something perceived as inanimate may affect a person or their life events, she also points out that scientific studies have verified that there are thousands of actions and reactions invisible to the naked eye that create everything from moods and health, to the physical manifestation of simple intention. She says, “On the most basic level particles that make up everything in our physical universe interact in every object whether animate or inanimate.”

The Gualala Arts interest group Friends of the Pizza Oven (FOPO) is ready to heat up the wood fired pizza oven in the beautiful Gualala Arts Center picnic area for another season of monthly pizza baking parties. The last Tuesday of each month starting March 31 and continuing through September 29 will see the FOPO members gathering to bake their hand-made pizzas in their wonderful wood fired pizza oven. Everyone is expected to step right up to the oven and bake their own pizzas, using provided crusts, sauce, toppings and any toppings they bring to bake that unique, signature pizza! Expert pizza baking assistance is provided to newcomers or timid would-be pizza bakers. Everyone brings a side dish to share with their FOPO mates, and their own beverages. Baking begins at 5:30 p.m. and we wrap up the festivities when it gets too dark to see our wine glasses.

In addition to the monthly pizza baking events, FOPO will be offering workshops on the pizza oven operation and pizza dough creation. Watch for workshop dates and times in future Sketches newsletters or GualalaArts.org. If you are interested in attending one or more of the FOPO events and possibly becoming a FOPO member please call Jamie Edwards at (707) 785-3740 for more information.

Spring is in the air!

A time for new beginnings and a time for

growth are now upon us. What started

out as a small seed over 50 years ago

called Art in the Redwoods has now

grown into a redwood forest of art

activities.

We have art opportunities ranging from

Global Harmony Summer Adventure

Camp for Youth, many open call, juried,

judged and/or curated gallery exhibits,

full calendars of workshops, arts festivals,

Studio Discovery Tour, poetry contest,

international visual and performing

artists shows, auditions for Oklahoma!,

Chowder Challenge and so much more.

How has our forest thrived so much

recently? I sum it up in one word.

LOVE

When we give our community

opportunities to express their love and

get involved new growth seems to

flourish.

It never ceases to amaze me to walk into

the arts center and every day there is

some form of love being expressed. Tonight as I was walking out to my car at twilight the Folkloric Dancers

were practicing for an upcoming performance. So inspiring to see the generations sharing their cultures and

passing down their centuries old traditions.

I hope you find some time this Spring to try something new, express some of your love and share it with your

neighbors. The great thing about love is that the more you express it the more it grows, so I encourage you to

spring forth and enjoy what your Arts Center has to offer. Who knows, maybe you’ll discover a new or

renewed love of the arts just waiting for you in that workshop that caught your eye, that concert you’ve always

wanted to attend, or that committee you heard about that could use a volunteer.

My mom always taught me the number one ingredient in cooking is love….”it always makes the food taste

better.”

Indeed it also makes the spring flowers smell sweeter…
