“Today you and your family have been saved!” Luke 19:9

Jesus is speaking these words to Zacchaeus, a wealthy tax col-lector in Jericho. Zacchaeus and his family were lost but Jesus looks for and saves them and us. Jesus is looking for us and our families to be at the table of fel-lowship in worship. Kid’s church remains an option through the summer and we even purchased a new sound system. A new lift and entrance way on Ohio Avenue complements the new lift our Lord has in store for us. In this the 160th Anniversary Year, Grace is again going to be a teaching parish with the arrival of Intern Pastor Wesley.

The Table is set; join the feast!

Internship is many things. It is an opportunity to explore the new and exciting role of pastoral care, it is a time for personal growth, it is a time to foster meaningful relation-ships and most of all it is a chance to further discern God's calling for my life. I am very excited for the oppor-tunity to work side by side with Pastor Clagg and I pray that internship will help me expand my horizons in a pas-toral sense and personal one as well. I look forward to meeting you all! God Bless. Byron Wesley Smith III Byron will arrive August 25th and will attend both services on August 31st. Please join us for an Installa-tion Celebration during both worship services and a Meet & Greet after each service. Also, Byron will need a few articles of furniture to make his home comfortable.

The Littlest Angels As many of you know, for several years Grace Church has been offering support in the way of school supplies, clothing and other needs to grandparents who are caring for their 6 grandchildren abandoned by their mother. We also began helping an addi-tional family in the area with 6 children. So we are now aiding a total of 12 children. If you wish to donate at any time, just put your donation in an envelope with “Littlest Angels Fund” written on it and drop in the mail to the church or in the col-lection on any Sunday.

This is a current list of Grace members and friends who are unable to worship regu-larly with us at church. Let us remember them in our prayers and with a visit, phone call, card, or letter. River In the Bible, rivers (and other bodies of water) often represent deliverance, salvation, freedom and cleansing. The Jordan River is especially promi-nent: The Israelites crossed it to enter the Prom-ised Land after God delivered them from slavery, and John baptized Jesus (and many other people) there. The image of crossing the Jordan River has long been a metaphor for death — crossing from earthly to heavenly life, from worldly struggles to the bliss of God’s kingdom, from physical ailments to the wholeness of a resurrection body.

Burning Bush In Exodus 3, God speaks to Moses from a bush that is burning but not consumed. When Moses asks what he should say if the Egyptians question who sent him to lead the Israelites out of slavery, God states, “I AM WHO I AM.” Centuries later, when people wonder who Jesus is, his answers hint at his divinity: “I AM the light of the world; I AM the good shepherd; I AM the bread of life” and, perhaps most profoundly, “Before Abraham was, I AM” (John 8:58). On Pentecost, God’s Holy Spirit comes upon the apostles as fire. Thus the burning bush is a powerful symbol of God’s presence ech-oed through time.

An Endowment Moment…

“Wills” An important aspect of providing for the ministry of Grace Church is the benefit received in the form of in-come from bequests and trusts established in years past. Wauneta Bonzo, for ex-ample, provided for the con-tinuous lighting of the Bell Tower. Income from Ted Wil-son’s bequest provides funds for the youth program. The compensation for a youth di-rector comes from an en-dowed fund established by Phyllis Grant. Bob and Lava-da Cleis established a fund to maintain our beautiful stained glass windows. Mem-bers and families that have come before visualized the need to continue providing for those who will follow. members who loved their church and the ministry it has provided since 1854. One way you and your family can remember a loved one is by naming the Mission En-dowment Fund of Grace Church as a beneficiary of your will. This gift can take several forms. You can leave a specif-ic item or amount of cash to the Mission Endowment Fund. A residual bequest, on the other hand, gives the part of the estate to Grace Church that remains after other specific and general be-quests have been distributed, or you may simply leave a percentage of your estate to Grace Church. If you feel that a bequest to Grace Church is a good idea and would like further infor-mation, contact Chick O’Da-ta, or Harry Baker.

The Water Glass

A psychologist walked around a room while teaching stress management to an audience. As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected they'd be ask the “half full or half empty” ques-tion. Instead, with a smile on her face, she in-quired, “How heavy is this glass of water?”

Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz.

She replies, “The absolute weight doesn’t mat-ter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my arm. If I hold it for a day, my arm will become numb and paralyzed. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it be-comes.”

She continued, “The stresses and worries in life are like that glass of water. Think about them for a while, and nothing happens. Think about them a bit longer, and they begin to hurt. And if you think about them all day long, you will feel paralyzed – incapable of doing any-thing.”

Remember to put down the glass.

SANDCASTLES A child is on his knees today Building in the sand. The castle is an arduous task. The end result is grand. Oh, now we watch the tide come in. The child then claps with glee. He knows the outcome of his work As it falls into the sea. A man sits in his office now To formulate a plan. He builds his empire tirelessly. The end result is grand. But when the tide comes crashing in, How does the man react? "It is my castle" he will shout, "And now I want it back." The ocean does not heed the cry. It does not own the sand. Just as the child we must rejoice, And see what God has planned. Our Lord has built upon a rock Instead of sand you see He gave his life to make a home For our eternity!

Scientists have discovered that sound travels faster in the summer than in the win-ter. In hot summer air, sound travels at 1,266 feet per sec-ond. But in cold air, sound travels as slow as 1,066 feet per second. So that means sermons preached in the summer will naturally be shorter, right? One day a little boy asked his pastor-mom why she al-ways bowed her head for a moment before starting to preach. The mother, delight-ed that her son was so aware of what went on during wor-ship, answered, “I pray for God to help me deliver a good sermon to the people.” Alas, her delight was short-lived and fizzled at the child’s response: “So why doesn’t God ever answer?” After an evening filled with vigorous sibling disa-greements, three children fi-nally turned in for the night. A few hours later, a major thunderstorm woke them all up. When their father heard the children conversing up-stairs, he called to see what was happening. A small, timid voice an-swered, “We’re all in the clos-et forgiving one another!” God called down to Moses and said, “I have good news and bad news. The good news

is that I’ve chosen you to de-liver my people from bond-age. I will force Pharaoh to release my children by caus-ing years of pestilence in Egypt. There will be plagues of locusts and frogs and in-conceivable devastation upon the land. Pharaoh’s armies will chase you, but don’t fear; I will part the waters of the Red Sea so you can escape.” “So what’s the bad news?” Moses asked. God answered, “You’ll have to prepare the environ-mental impact statement.” Two horses were walking back to the paddock after a day of training. One says to the other “I can't understand why we are so slow, we come from good stock, we have the best of food, great trainers, and yet we come last in every race.” There was a dog running alongside them who over-heard and said “I know what your problem is. I have seen you race and it looks to me as if you race off at the start re-ally fast and use up all your energy and then you have nothing left. What you should do is pace yourselves and when all the other hors-es are tuckered, put in a spurt and you're sure to win. What do you think of that?”

The horses looked at one another and said “WOW, a talking dog!” During a loud summer thunderstorm, a mother tucked her son into bed. As she turned off the light, he asked with a tremor, “Mommy, will you sleep with me tonight?” The mother smiled and gave her son a reassuring hug. “I can’t, dear,” she said. “I have to sleep in Daddy’s room.” After a long silence, the boy replied, “The big sissy.”
