SIMHASTHA KUMBH MELA, UJJAIN (2016)

Ujjain, situated on the banks of river Shipra, is one of the most sacred places in

India. It is also the place where Maharishi Sandipani had taught Lord Krishna,

alongwith Balarama and Sudama.

The city is home to Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, one of the twelve Jyotirlinga

shrines to the God Shiva, apart from many other temples.

In Indian mythology, the origin of the city is ascribed to the act of Sagar

Manthan, which refers to the churning of the primordial ocean performed by

the demigods and demons to discover a pot containing the nectar of

immortality. The story goes that after the nectar was discovered, a fierce

struggle ensued between the demigods and the demons to obtain the nectar

for the attainment of immortality. During the chase, a drop of nectar spilled and

fell on Ujjain, thus making the city sacred.

According to legend, the river Shipra that flows across Ujjain is regarded to have

originated owing to the churning of the Gods and Goddesses.

When Guru(Jupiter) and the Sun are in the zodiac

sign Scorpio (Vrishchik Rashi), the Kumbh is

celebrated at Ujjain. The Ujjain Kumbh Mela is

also referred to as the ‘Simhastha Kumbh Mela’ since Guru is in Simha Rashi during that period.

The dates for Simhastha Kumbh during 2016

have been declared as between 22nd April to 21st

May 2016.

It is a totally different experience when

devotees and sadhus come together and

go ahead for the shahi snan – a dip in

the sacred river Shipra, followed by visit

to the Mahakalesvara temple and bow

before the Lord Shiva.
