Project ScopeAn efficient method for numerical global seismology

We combine an overlapping multidomain Chebyschev method (OMDC) with geometrical mapping functions to simulate wave propagation on continental and global scale.

The Cubed-Sphere approach which combines 6 equal chunks is used for the global scale. The uniform mapping requires few pre-calculated geometry parameters and is efficient. The OMDC allows for an highly scalable parallel implementation.

Main ResultsFirst tests prove that the OMDC method works well and can provide accurate results with very low dispersion errors.

The Cubed Sphere mapping does not introduce significant errors, but a coupling between lateral derivatives.

A new parallel code for production is under development.

The OMDC discrete operator is comparable with an high order FD operator in structure, but for the same level of accuracy a lower number of grid points can be used.

Outlook

The method needs to be tested with various setups in order to assess the properties and limits of the method and to find appropriate setups for productive runs. Moreover, it

has to be evaluated against established methods.

The method will be applied to realistic 3D velocity models on global and continental scale.

(in particular for the European–Mediterranean region)

To obtain a simulation program in production quality further testing, debugging and verification of the code is

required. More features need to be added in order to improve code usability (model definition, output formats,…)
