Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This month we will begin using a

different lectionary than we have

used in the past. Many of you

may be saying what is a lectionary,

and do we have one? Those are

both good and valid reactions.

First and Zion have been using the

Revised Common Lectionary (RCL)

for as far back as I can tell. What

this lectionary is, is a group of

readings that have been chosen, by

scholars, to be read each week in

worship service. It includes the

Old Testament readings, the

Psalms, the New Testament

readings and the Gospels. It is a

three year cycle, one year for

Matthew, Mark, and Luke, with

the Gospel of John used in each of

the three years. What a lectionary

does is it helps organize the Bible

and lays out a pattern for reading

through each Gospel.

The narrative lectionary has

been developed by professors at

Luther Seminary. This lectionary is

a four year cycle so that each of

the four Gospels has its own year.

What is different about this

lectionary is that it focuses on one

bible story each week. In the fall,

we will concentrate on Old

Testament Stories and with Advent

and Christmas we will begin to

focus on the Gospel, come spring

we will focus on New Testament

writings. The creators of this

lectionary contend that we need

to study in more depth the

overarching story of God, that we

should be following God’s presence

from the beginning of time through

the end of the bible.

What does this mean for you

and worship? Rest assured that we

are not not not not changing hymnals that we

are notnotnotnot messing with the orders of

worship that you are used to. What

will change will be the stories that

will be focused on for sermons and

As your Pastor, I look forward to

kids have moved into college, are busy adjusting to a

new schedule, and making new friends. We want to

make sure we can stay in touch with those who are

away and keep them in our prayers. Please email the

church or leave a note in the office with the names and

addresses of ALLALLALLALL of our kids going to college. We will

list them here each month and encourage the members

of our congregation to send them a note or card to let

them know we have not forgotten them. Maybe, just

maybe, they will update us once in a while with pictures

or just a note that we can share in this spot in our

newletter.

Experiences being sharedExperiences being sharedExperiences being sharedExperiences being shared………... ………... ………... ………...

On Sunday afternoon, August 10th, a very receptive audience was treated to an awesome travelogue that took us on the

paths that Jesus and some of his disciples walked. Through the detailed descriptions and photographs Dennis and Wendy

(Pokela) Mannering presented, we experienced a visual journey through Biblical life and times. It was awesome to see the

places we have studied and heard about all our lives and to be confronted with the fact that these places really exist and are

there for Christians to see and believe. As Jesus said to Thomas "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to

believe" John 20:29b

Some of the highlights of the trip were:

• 4 days in Tiberius on the Sea of Galilee (Lake Kineret))))

• Chorazin: Where Jesus scolded the Pharisees, incurred Jesus’ condemnation (“Woe to you, Chorazin!”) because

their people did not accept his teachings and repent (Matthew 11:20-24).

• Mount of Transfiguration - Matt. 17:1-13, a glimpse of heaven

• Capernaum: Peter lived there and Jesus spent a lot of time there

• Jordan River where John the Baptist baptized his cousin Jesus

• Bethlehem: Jesus birthplace, Nazareth: Jesus' childhood home

• The House of Caiaphas or Palace of Caiaphas was the place where the High Priest of Israel resided, and it was here that Jesus was tried informally by the Sanhedrin

• Wailing Wall: brought prayer lists and many of the prayers were answered that day

• Golgotha: Jesus' crucifixion, not high up as pictures show it but in the middle of a cliff so more visible

• Road to Emmaus: Luke 24:13-35 where Jesus appeared before two of his followers on the road to Emmaus after his resurrection.

• Dead Sea: can sit in it and not sink, lowest place in the world

• Bethany: home of Lazarus, Mary and Martha

• Mount of Temptation: is said to be the hill in the Judean Desert where Jesus was tempted by the devil (Matthew 4:8)

• Jericho: oldest city in the world

• CANA, OF GALILEE: This was the scene of Christ's earliest (1st) miracle, when, at the marriage feast, He turned

water into wine (John 2:1).

*The free will offering was given to world hunger, help w/tents, seminary.

BreBreBreBread from the Heart ad from the Heart ad from the Heart ad from the Heart Bread from the Heart is a ministry of the women of First Lutheran Church-Prentice (W/ELCA). We will provide a home cooked

meal as well as a prayer of healing and hope to members of our community that has: lost a loved one, is battling an illness or

is having or has had surgery. Please call one of the following coordinators of the Bread from the Heart ministry if you know

someone we can help, they will make the necessary arrangements.

Amy Esterholm 715-428-2200: Shawnda Hora 715-428-2026: Rebekah Koch 715-922-0048: Dallas Severson 715-564-3328

Is there something you would like to see added to the newsletter? Please ask me!

Have you come across any articles that you would like to share with others? Email them to the church!

“God’s work. Our Hands” Sunday is today September 7th. We did not plan a work day due to the fact that last weekend was a

whirlwind of activity for most everyone around Prentice. But that doesn’t mean we can’t do something, in September and October.

Colder weather is coming and we all want to be ready for it. However some people have things they can’t do by themselves.

So………..let’s all keep our eyes and ears open for people around us that need some help. Our confirmation students need 20

hours of community service work, outside of the church (and not for Mom & Dad). So let’s find something for them to do.

If you see anybody struggling with outside work, know someone that needs help stacking wood, maybe even cleaning up outside,

raking leaves, picking up brush, cleaning out a garage or building…….whatever. Call the church or one of the confirmation kids

and see if they can help.

If there is a larger project around town maybe we as a church can work together on, let us know. Let’s really be God’s hands by

helping others.
