PASTOR’S LETTER The Mysteries of the Rosary, Chapter 43: The Self-Manifesta!on of Jesus at the Wedding of Cana…

Saint John Paul, II, in his concise summary of this mystery in his encyclical on the Rosary, writes that it “is the first of the signs, given at Cana (cf. Jn 2:1- 12), when Christ changes water into wine and opens

the hearts of the disciples to faith, thanks to the interven!on of Mary, the first among believers.” Let’s look together at this wonderful miracle in more detail.

Saint John begins his account of this event in his Gospel in these words: “On the third day there was a marriage at Cana in Galilee.” The reference to “the third day” isn’t just thrown in to sa!sfy some historical curiosity of ours. It looks forward to the Resurrec!on of Jesus Christ “on the third day” (Ma$hew 16:21, 17:23, 20:19; Luke 9:22; 1 Corinthians 15:4). Now, you might ask, “Why do the Scriptures men!on “the third day”? Our Savior died on Friday and rose again on Sunday. Sunday is two days a%er Friday, not three.” So it is, and in modern American culture, we would say that Sunday is “two days later,” or, if we were speaking on Friday, might refer to Sunday as “the day a%er tomorrow.” But in ancient Jewish thought—as we see in the Old Testament—the count of days began with the present day. So, what we would we call “the day a%er tomorrow” they referred to with the expression “on the third day.”

So, what does the changing of water into wine at the marriage at Cana have to do with the Resurrec!on of Jesus Christ? A lot!

First of all, let’s look at the fact that this miracle took place at a marriage. In human marriage, the man and woman receive a new body in the sense that they are now “one flesh,” as Jesus puts it. (Ma$hew 19:6) Their lives will never be the same. In fact, you could say that “their lives” becomes “their life.” In a similar way Jesus, in his Resurrec!on, received a transformed, glorified body.

For another thing, a human marriage involves a bridegroom and a bride. Jesus referred to himself as “the Bridegroom” of the Church (Ma$hew 9:15, Mark 2:19, Luke 5:34). Others used that term to describe him, too (John 3:29, 2 Corinthians 11:2, Ephesians 5:31-32, Revela!on 19:7, Revela!on 22:17). It was by his Resurrec!on that Our Lord could enter into that role.

There’s also the fact that a human bride and groom enter into a more in!mate rela!onship than that which exists between two people who are simply friends. This is especially the case when they live according to God’s plan—remaining virgins and not living together un!l they get married. By his Resurrec!on, Jesus could enter into a more in!mate rela!onship with every human being, through the Holy Spirit and the Sacraments.

Then there’s the ma$er of joy. Normally, a wedding is an occasion of great joy. At least, that’s how it’s been at every wedding I’ve ever been at. The Resurrec!on is also an occasion of great joy, which con!nues to our own day and will last forever. This is reflected in the fact that all five Prefaces for Mass during the Easter Season contain the phrase: “Therefore, overcome with paschal joy, every land, every people exults in your praise…” (The word “paschal” comes from the Hebrew word for “Passover,” which has been adopted by Chris!ans to refer to Christ’s Passover from death to life, as seen in words for Easter in some non-English languages like La!n (Pascha) and Spanish (Pascua).)

Another connec!on between a wedding and the Resurrec!on of Jesus Christ is that both enable new life. When a young man and woman get married, most of the !me their love for each other results in the new life we call a baby. The Resurrec!on of the Son of God paved the way for the sacrament of bap!sm, which brings new and eternal life to whomever is bap!zed—in fact, what happens in bap!sm is so powerful and transforma!ve that Jesus refers to it as being “born again” (John 3:5).

Marriage in any culture or religion can be a joyful event. Jesus Christ raised marriage to an even higher, more joyful level when he established the sacrament of matrimony. In this sacrament, he infuses his own life into the rela!onship between husband and wife. Let’s pray that all couples who are married non-sacramentally will find their way to get their marriage blessed in the Church, please God, and so enjoy the fullness of love, joy and other blessings that God has wai!ng for them.

Your fellow pilgrim through the Rosary, Fr. Rudolph

SAINT OF THE DAY - BLESSED ROLAND DE’ MEDICI Roland was born around the year 1330 in Italy. He was a member of the powerful Medici family. Nothing is known of his childhood and youth. When he was about thirty, he withdrew into a forest. Here, in his desire to become holy, Roland subjected himself for the remaining twenty-six years of his life to some extreme forms of penance. He observed total silence, communica!ng with others only when he absolutely had to and then only by signs. He wore the habit he had on when he went into the forest un!l it was in shreds, and when he could no longer patch it with leaves, he exchanged it for a goat’s skin. Living out in the open all year round, he survived on what grasses, berries and other fruits he was able to find. Many people who came across him thought he was insane and would throw things at him or hit him. Roland, meanwhile, tried to remain in a state of constant prayer. Then one day he was found lying on a footpath near the castle of Niccolò Pallavicino, lord of Bargone, by servants of his wife, Antonia Casa!, who was out hun!ng with falcons. Roland made signs that he did not want help, but on Anonia’s orders, he was taken to a church near the castle. There he accepted visits from Anonia’s confessor, the Carmelite Father Domenico de Domenicis, who would become his biographer. As last Roland broke his silence, gave an account of his life and received the sacraments of which he had deprived himself so long. He lived another few weeks before dying on September 15, 1386. In death, Roland was given the recogni!on he had shunned in life. His body was taken by a great company of priests and lay people to Busseto and buried beneath the main altar in an oratory next to the parish church of Saint Bartholomew. Numerous miracles were reported at his tomb. Blessed Roland de’ Medici, pray for us! Encouraging suicide is not compassion.

A bill introduced into the Minnesota Legislature, HF 2152, would legalize assisted suicide. Catholic teaching points out that suicide is a tragic response to suffering, including the suffering of sickness. Human life is a gi% from God and only He has the right to decide when it should end. No life is “not worth living.” Someone who is suffering from physical and emo!onal pain can be be$er helped by love, medica!on, encouragement, counseling and prayer than by helping him or her to end their life. Ul!mately, suffering is a mystery which can find meaning in the life, suffering and death of Jesus Christ. For more informa!on about HF 2152 and assisted suicide, I recommend looking at the websites of the Minnesota Catholic Conference and the Pa!ents Rights Council. I also encourage you to contact your legislators and respec>ully ask them to oppose HF 2152. I sent my legislators the following message via email. You may consider doing something similar. I am wri!ng to ask you to please oppose HF 2152, which would legalize assisted suicide. Taking one's own life is not a good way to respond to suffering. Life is a gi$ from God and He is the only one who has the right to decide when it should end. Also, people who are suffering have be"er means to

cope with their pain than suicide, including medica!on and prayer. In fact, if we unite our suffering with that of Jesus Christ on the cross, it can help other people out. – Father Rudolph
