S E L J 4,2015

M I Dear Parishioners, Blessed New Year! There is certainly a boost of optimism that accompanies the start of a new year. It’s like we’ve been given a pardon for the mistakes of the past twelve months. “This year’s gonna be different,” we tell ourselves – as we set out to tackle our goals with a smile on our face. There are many online sources that identify lists of the most popular New Year’s resolutions for Americans: lose weight, get more exercise, quite smoking, manage stress, save more money, learn something new, do more volunteer service. Are any of those on your agenda for 2015? So, January 1st arrives and we set our mind to change a bad habit or begin something new. Some studies give evidence to spiritual disciplines that, if used, can help achieve the noble resolutions we make to improve our lives. I think Jesus was attuned to our stress-filled and anxious lives when he gave this counsel: “Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important than they?” (Matthew 6:26) Did you ever see a bird worried about its waistline or trying to give up smoking? The point is, we can achieve serenity and concentration to achieve all those important goals when we keep our focus on the One who in the first place has the power to accomplish all that we need. Is it any wonder Jesus so frequently went off to a quiet place to pray? The clarity of mind and soul kept our Lord on the route of His mission. Maybe in this New Year, we can pray for the grace to achieve self-control by uncomplicating our lives in little ways. Embrace contentment with the portion we have. Discover that we can live for a whole hour without looking at our smart phone or some other media devise. Maybe we can begin our busy days by first coming to a quiet early morning Mass or drop in to our chapel for the peacefulness of Eucharistic Adoration. Maybe we can still ourselves with a few minutes of centering prayer at our desk. Don’t overlord. Empty out. And let God in. (Personally, I hope it helps me knock off a few pounds). Blessed New Year to you and your family!

“...they fell down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold,

frankincense, and myrrh.” —Matthew 2:11

Notice the order of events in the Magi’s visit. First, they knelt before Jesus and prayed to Him. Then they presented Him with their gifts. We, too, must take time to pray before we present our gifts to the Lord. We never know what God may be asking us to share!

F F All are invited to continue praying for justice, peace and charity. Come join us for prayer and song. For more information contact Our Lady of Guadalupe parish office at (314) 522-9264. The reflection will be given by Msgr. Jack Schuler.

Did you get it? The card above? The Evangeliza on team with many volunteers wound up their door to door ministry a er star ng it during Lent of 2013. This card (which was handed to those who were home or put in the bag that was le on your door knob) summarizes the reason for the visits. Here are some sta s cs:

• Over 2800 registered parishioners visited • 46 volunteers went knocking on doors two by two • Knocking took place on 38 weekends over a 20 month period; plus some weekdays! • There were 2-28 volunteers who paired up on any given weekend • Weather included sunshine (the favorite), clouds, rain, cold, snow and ice • More than 50% of parishioners were home when visited • Hundreds of prayers were said before, at the doors, and a er the visits

Thank you for your par cipa on in our parish, a part of the universal Catholic Church. Please con nue prayers for everyone, especially as we move into the Year of Prayer in 2015, a focus of the Archdiocese of St Louis. If you can’t find your card and would like one, pick one up at the back of church.

Last year Holy Infant shared copies of Ma hew Kelly’s book “The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic” with parishioners.

Archbishop Carlson, has a vision for Catholic renewal, as he makes clear in his pastoral le er on evangeliza on: “It is me for a new spring me of holiness and evangeliza on in the Archdiocese of St. Louis.” Dynamic Catholic, Alive! has the poten al to posi on the Archdiocese of St. Louis at the vanguard of Catholic renewal in the United States.

The Archdiocese of St. Louis has decided to focus the next four years on these signs star ng with the year of prayer. Each month will be opportuni es for growth in your prayer life through messages shared at Mass, in the bulle n, on the parish website, in emails and offerings at the parish outside of Mass.

If you s ll have your copy of “The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic”, reading or re-reading the book is encouraged, especially Chapter 2. The Mass is the most perfect prayer according to St. Thomas Aquinas and it will be the first form of prayer emphasized later this month.
