Publicity Officers report to all Bugle correspondents First Edition for 2015

I would like to wish you all a happy new year. I hope that your Christmas break was worth-while and that you are refreshed and ready to plan for 2015. Several clubs are planning to hold “Come & Try Square Dancing “sessions. Is your club planning or have you started to do this?

How are you making contact with potential dancers? Club members are a wonderful point to start with. It seems that the newer the dancers, the greater chance they have to recruit more new ones. Are you advertising in local shopping centres on their notice boards? Are you planning a letterbox drop in your area? Most local Members of Parliament or Councillors will do some photocopying if you approach them nicely, explaining that it is for a community activity. Likewise local newspapers will sometimes put an article about “New Learners Classes” in their community section, (if they have one).

You should have read in previous Bugles and society minutes that the Square Dancing Society of Qld. Inc. would love to see your club notices for beginner’s classes on their web site. Details are on the site to tell you what to do. The society will also consider subsidising publicity costs for classes to clubs who make an appropriate application.

It is important that all club members are kept abreast of changes to the Society’s constitution and guidelines. All members are invited to management meetings and general meetings. If you want your clubs ideas put forward you have the opportunity at the meetings. There is much information on the Society website http://www.squaredancingsocietyofqueensland.org . Have a look at it and see the progress your society is making, how it can help you and what you can do to help promote our activity.

Beginners Class Advertising

Is your club currently running or planning to run a beginners class in the near future? You are welcome to advertise this class on the Society Website. Please submit any flyers or information via the Secretary. The information will then be located under the “LEARN TO DANCE” tab on our Website.

Hervey Bay Square Dancers.

Hi everyone. We at Hervey Bay have been busy doing demos everywhere we could to promote our great activity and attract new dancers. We set up a stall at our local markets, danced to bright and cheerful music in one of the unused shops at Stockland for which we were grateful and danced once again at Scarness Park on Australia Day. We had a wright-up in our local free newspaper as well as advertising at our line-dancing classes and exercise classes. David Smythe gave us a great Come-N-Try morning and since then we have been able to pick up another square of new dancers who are keen and coming along nicely. We are now planning a 'Getting to Know You' bar-b-que as a follow up. All club members have been busy with organizing and acting as 'angels'. On the 7th February when David Smythe was up for the Come-N-Try morning, he called Plus in the Afternoon and Mainstream that night. What a busy day we all had but we wouldn't have changed it. Another demo. - this time for Harmony Day at Scarness Park on 21st March which should be fun. Another busy day as we have our learners class at 9.30a.m. to 11.30a.m., demo at 12.15p.m. and then some of us are off to Maryborough to dance with Alan Evans, Plus at 2.30p.m. and Mainstream at 7p.m. Wish us luck. Bye for now.

DISCLAIMER

The opinions expressed in this publication are those of the individual contributors and may not necessarily agree with the opinions of the Editor , the Square Dancing Society of Queensland Inc. or the individual Clubs affiliated with the Square Dancing Society of Queensland Inc., nor are we responsible for any goods advertised for sale.

Writing for the Bugle.

I have been asked to underline some of the issues which need more detailed understanding when writing articles and advertisements for the Bugles. Some changes have been made and I ask all Club Presidents, Secretaries, Publicity Officers and dancers who wish to contribute to your magazine to please note these.

Firstly. All articles and advertisements are to be emailed to the Bugle editor. This is [email protected].

Please try to ensure that all articles and ads are well written. Documents should be sent as computer files, preferably in Microsoft “Word” format. If Word is not available, the full text may be written in the body of the email. Please do not Scan or format as a picture file or convert it to a pdf file. These formats generally do not reproduce well in the Bugle without much work by the editor.

Clubs that are affiliated with the society, that is they have paid an affiliation fee, may advertise in the Bugle without charge. Non Affiliated Clubs will be charged $40.00 Full page, $20.00 Half page & $10.00 ¼ page. Advertisements sizes are :-

For Society and QCA sponsored functions, ie Sunshine State Round up or the State Conventions, a Full page advertisement is acceptable, e.g. A4 Portrait with 5 mm borders.

For affiliated clubs, one half A4 page is the maximum size. Page orientation of the Bugle is PORTRAIT but your advert or article orientation is to be in LANDSCAPE eg to fit on the top or bottom half of the portrait page. Several clubs have expressed the view that the bugle is too many pages. We may consider limiting club ads to ¼ page if the size continues to create problems. Please consider when you design an advertisements that Bright Colours and Fancy Fonts may look good on a Noticeboard Flier, they may not reproduce well on a Bugle page. Consider a 12 point font for general information and restrict the use of large fonts to Headlines and Sub headings. Don’t use a background colour for the whole item. Good quality photos used to report on an event usual-ly reproduce well, but please attach the file rather than scanning a picture. All items for publication must be submitted to the editor by 25

th of each month.

Rambling Eights, Salisbury - Caller: David Pearce

Our club celebrated 29 years of dancing on February 13 and the theme was love hearts for valentines. For our new dancers enjoying their first party night along with our regulars and visitors, there was a great variety of fun dancing to cater for all. A big thank you to David and guest callers for their work on the night and preparing beforehand. The smiling faces and laughter indicated that everyone had a good time and the work from all involved was worth it to share a special night.

The following week was a different matter, with Cyclone Marcia threatening the north coast. Due to the wild weather and the fact that many travel quite a distance to attend, it was decid-ed to cancel the dance rather than have anyone drive out in these unpredictable conditions. As well as phone calls, David managed to get local radio station 4BC to advertise the cancel-lation, but we know that not everyone would have been aware. Our sincere apologies are to anyone who braved the roads on Friday 20

th February, we are sorry that you were not noti-

fied, but hope you will attend again in the future.

On a happier note, back in January while dancing was in recess, all club members were in-vited to a meeting followed by dinner at the Salisbury Bowls Club. After dinner we enjoyed another night of barefoot bowls with some rather intriguing and even hilarious techniques be-ing employed by some. Although many are very capable on the dance floor, not all are skilled on the bowling green, but all are wonderful at putting on a smile and having fun. Also in January many members also helped with a letter-box drop to attract new dancers. With newspaper ads, community notices and shop flyers we had a great turn out on the first night, with more arriving the following week. We hope they continue to enjoy and support this great activity with us.

Dancing resumed on Tuesday 20 January and Wednes-day 21 January. On Australia Day, about 20 club mem-bers participated in Buderim's Australia Day march along the main street to the school grounds where we gave a dancing demonstration with Gary calling. It was an extremely hot day. On the following Saturday night, 31 January, we had our 'Don't Say No Give it a Go' dance with a good number of new prospective dancers attending. Pam Edwards

PINE RIVERS SENIOR CITIZENS

We’re back for 2015 and looking forward to a year of fun, friendship and square dancing. We have 6 enthusiastic new dancers and look forward to helping them learn our great activity. It’s great to see Carol Newman dancing when she is able. We know how much it means to her. We have a couple of members who are not able to do much dancing any more, but still come along and en-joy t he afternoons. We wish a speedy recovery to Joan Jackson following her accident earlier in the year. We are keeping your seat warm for you. Happy dancing everyone Jan Hay

CANE COUNTRY SQUARES

Having just started in February our first theme night was a combina-tion of “Black Friday” the first of three for the year, and the one and only “Valentine’s Day with two sets dancing. Everyone dressed in red and black. The red and black raffle was won by Averil, part of which was chocolates. We hope she enjoyed them. On 6th March our Club will celebrate its 32nd Birthday with a social dinner out before dancing and a special cake to be cut on the night. Pam Garson

Cairns City Square Dance Club

The year has started a bit slower than usual for the club with wet weather

preventing our out of town members being able to attend some of our Fri-

day night dances. Others have been away including Diann and Henry who

have only just returned from south.

From now on we hope to be back to normal baring any bad weather condi-

tions and this will include the club having our Plus Night next month.

All members we are all looking forward to the year ahead and are planning

our special dances as well.

Logan City Square Dance Centre

11th Anniversary dance

Saturday 14th February marked the 11th Anniversary of the opening of our centre.

Being Valentine’s Day the theme was red & white with many dancers wearing these

two colours. Of course with so many red & white outfits, it created a challenge for

our feature caller Mike Davey from Victoria but being the professional he is, breezed

through both sessions. With 7 squares attending the Plus session in the afternoon and

10 squares attending the Mainstream session in the evening the hall was full with

everyone enjoying themselves to the max. In keeping with the Valentine’s Day theme,

caller Mike’s singing calls were all love songs. It’s amazing how many square dance

tunes are about love!

With a sumptuous supper to finish the night, it can only be described as a successful

event. Sincere thanks are extended to all those who helped set up, clean up and most

of all to you the dancers for coming along to commemorate the opening of the centre.

Our monthly Saturday dances will continue this year with Kay Walker calling in

March.

Please note; no dance in April due to the national convention.

STEPPING OUT WITH CLOGGING

CLOGGERS will be storming in to Coolum on the beautiful Sunshine Coast on the

2015 ACA National Clogging Convention.

Closing date for Queensland submissions is 7th March, which will then be followed by

choosing the Queensland Showcase dance for the National Convention.

Registrations are still open for the 20th National Convention, this year being held at

Cloggers across Australia and New Zealand are sending their love and best wishes to

one of Clogging’s true gems, Gail Ross of Bundaberg, whose health situation caused

her to recently retire from being the Leader at Fancy Shuffle Cloggers.

Our thoughts are with you Gail; the sunshine of your smile continues to make our day.

now back at teaching and planning at CHUG-A-LUG CLOGGERS, E.Z. CLOG-
