Understanding the Application Process

• Application deadline for students starting Block 1 in Fall is February 15.

• Application deadline for Spring is October 15.• 50 seats available: first come-first served.

Application Criteria

• 55 semester hours, including current semester, towards General Ed. requirements. (no developmental courses)

• EDUC-F200, SPCH-S121, ENG-W131, MATH-T101, all completed with a “C” or better.

• Completed, or be enrolled in, all Language Arts content courses.

• Overall GPA of at least 2.50 (no rounding up)• “C” or better in all Language Arts and Math content courses.• Passing score on Praxis 1 tests or alternatives.

Praxis 1 Alternative Scores

• Praxis 1 composite (sum), at least 527

• ACT with a score of at least 24 based on Math, Reading, Grammar, and Science

• SAT with a score of at least 1100 based on Verbal (“Critical Reading”) and” Math”; NOT “Writing” or sub-tests

• GRE with a score of at least 1100 based on Verbal and Quantitative

• Anyone with a Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution is exempt.

Taking the Praxis 1

• Paper and Pencil Tests- Offered at IUS- Scores available within 6 weeks

• Computer-based Tests Prometric Testing Center, Louisville (423-0478) University of Louisville (852-6607)

• Writing scores available in approximately 2 weeks.• Praxis can be taken once each calendar month, no more

than six times during any one calendar year. • Praxis Scores are available on-line for about two months,

so be sure to save as a PDF—costs $40+ for another report!

• Praxis Registration Information brochures are available on the wall outside the Student Development Center.

• Preparation materials for Praxis are available from ETS (some for sale) and in the Library.

What does it mean…Getting into Blocks?

You won’t be taking any other general education courses while in blocks.• Block 1 – Child as Learner• Block 2 – The Literate Child• Block 3 – Integration across the

Curriculum• Block 4 – Teaching in an Era of Accountability• Special Education students will take 1

summer block and some evening classes.

Field Experience

• ALL blocks include field experiences at specific schools both in Indiana and Kentucky.• It is MANDATORY for students to be available Monday through Friday from 8:00 – 4:00! (Practica schedules will be set early in each semester.)

What else…?

• Continue taking courses that are requirements for your degree! Aim to finish Gen.Ed prior to Block 1.

• Make an effort to take ENG-W 250 (W 131 is pre-requisite) and MATH “T” courses as soon as possible—they fill quickly!

• Keep a close eye on your GPA!

• Faculty may review a student’s status at any point in the program!

• If you need to e-mail anyone, please include your student ID number!

• See your SOE faculty advisor at least once a semester!
