The Nineteenth Squadron AGMThe Beginnings

In the beginning, there was no Squadron. P/C Hugh Sproule’s efforts with others brought the Squadron to light in 1996. Our charter was presented at a gala dinner at the Gabriola Golf Club late in 1996 by the then Chief Commander, Yves Ferland, who happened to be in the area at the time. At this AGM, 2015, the Charter members were specially invited as guests, and seven were able to attend.

Pictured above are charter members, left to right, Richard DeLissa, John Hall, Steve Wohlleben, D’Arcy Boulton, High Sproule, Oliver Woolcock, and Mike Hoeinghaus.

Photos of the AGM event credit to Bill Kalbfleisch and Mary Jane Derksen.

The Nineteenth Squadron AGMThe Awards - Congratulations to All

The Arthur J Nielsen Award for the highest mark achieved in the Boating Course. Arthur was the first Commander of the Squadron. This year’s winner is Tobi Elliot, the certificate being presented by Educational Officer, Bob Weenk. The actual trophy was in the process of being engraved.

The Rudy Bohm Memorial Award named for the late Rudy Bohm, AP, recognizing exemplary performance in boating embodying the principles of CPS-ECP. Fre-da Bohm is invited to help present the award.

Last year Bert terHart was named the Rudy Bohm Memorial award recipient, for his trip to the Bearing Sea, but was away. Both he, and the 2015 award recipient, Ol-iver Woolcock, were present at this year’s AGM. Oliver is recognized for his excel-lent on the water instruction.

The Windchime Award for outstanding contribution to Education goes to Ralph Hagen, whose untiring efforts over many years have resulted in significant recognition for the results obtained in our courses. This award was donated by Hugh Sproule, who has returned from Nova Scotia to Nanaimo, and who was the main instigator in 1996 for bringing our Squad-ron into existence.

The Nineteenth Squadron AGMThe Recognitions

.. And we recognize Elaine Pearce, Jude Briscoe, Bob Derk-sen, and Mary Jane Derksen (shown with Jude) for the arrangements with a well-decorated ven-ue, and scrumptious food and cake.

The Squadron Bridge members sur-prised retiring Commander Ralph with a gift of a ship’s clock and engraving, saying thanks for the many years of dedicated hard work that has made our Squadron rightfully proud of its many achievements. Thank you Ralph! In-dulge in that cake - you deserve it.

The Nineteenth Squadron AGMThe Venue

The Rollo Seniors Centre was again chosen as the venue for the AGM, and it was another success. An afternoon event, with finger food works well.

D/C Barry Ensign from Nanaimo addresses the assembled in his first official duty. He was pledged into office the day before.

Cruise to the Fireworks

Two of our boats sailed to Vancouver. We were thrilled by the outstanding fireworks display by Brazil. A Cappella and Free Spirit are seen mored together in Fisherman’s Wharf, July 28-30. It’s a great place to visit - winds are always in one right direction or the other, so close to awe-some dining and shopping at the Granville Market, and a handy marina. Keep it in mind for next summer.More photos of the fireworks can be seen at :https://dbutt.smugmug.com/Fireworks-in-English-Bay-2015/

On the way home: I’m not sure of they were just wanting beach time, or forgot to read the tide tables.

It’s never too late to get a FREE COURTESY SAFETY BOAT CHECK verifying that you have all the required safety equipment on board. The Gabriola Power Squadron has a great group of volunteers that look forward to providing your Free Courtesy Safety Boat Check. To book an appointment call Jude Briscoe at 250 247 8600 or email [email protected] the website, http://www.powersquadron.gabriola.org/rvcc.htmlOur team of Jude, Bob Wood, Bill Kalbfleisch, Bob Derksen, & Don Butt did courtesy checks on a few boats on a very windy day in the early summer.

All night long, a major attraction for young and not so young.

The summer has busy with “Lil’ Gabe”, RVCC’s and a mid-summer survey for National.

Lil’ Gabe attended four events this summer: Oceans Day on June 7th, Concert on the Green on August 6th, Salmon Barbeque on August 8th, and the Street Art/Theatre Festival on August 16th. She was enthusiastically received at all events especially by the children. At the Street Art at least 10 pamphlets were taken which hopefully will

increase our course enrolments this fall.

In July, the Squadron was tasked with completing a survey from the National “Boundaries” committee concerning the current and future benefit of the “Districts” in the administration of the organization. As no Bridge meeting was to be held, I sent the survey to the Bridge members by email and asked for input. Once I had these back, I collated the answers and used the “ma-jority” answer to each question as our Squadron answer. Where there was on majority, I biased our answer towards the answers from the most experienced Bridge Officers (who were mostly always in agreement). This survey went in on July 30th to the Committee Chair. The committee will collate the reports from all the Squadrons in the District and present the findings to the Na-tional Bridge to be discussed at the National meeting in October. So we could see some changes to the overall structure of CPS-ECP coming in the next year.

Judy and I will be attending the VIND Rendezvous in Parksville on August 29th – 31st, taking our trailer up to Rathtrevor Beach for the event. I will report on the event for our next Bridge meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Mike Hoeinghaus, Commander

From the Educational DepartmentBert terHart

I’ve always had a soft spot for the quiet competent types. The unsung heroes as it were. People like the Australian Bill Nance, who in 1965 circumnavigat-ed via the three great capes in the 26 foot ‘Cardinal Vertue’ before Sir Francis Chichester did so in 1967. And, I’ll add, with considerably less fanfare. Nance even had the distinction of

holding the singlehanded speed record for a long passage – 122 miles per day for 53 days! All on a waterline of less than 20’. In this vein I would like to take this opportunity to thank one of our own Squadron’s unsung heroes. Bob Weenk has been helping drive the Squadron’s training activities for longer than he would care to admit. I, for one, have been the fortunate recipient of his untiring and considerable dedication to teaching safe boating. As I look to the task of carrying on the Squadron’s training activities, I cannot help but admire what Bob and others had managed to achieve in our humble neck of the woods. I also shudder to think where we would be now if it were not for his and the many other unsung squadron heroes’ efforts. So, Bravo Zulu Bob. I wish you fair winds and following seas.

Course offerings for Fall 2015 are scheduled as follows: Boating Basics - Starting Wednesday September 9th and finishing September 30th . Classes will start at 19:00 and finish before 21:00 Boating Essentials - Starting Wednesday October 7th (immediately following Boating Basics) and finishing December 16th. Classes will start at 19:00 and finish before 21:00. Maritime Radio - Starting at 10:00, Saturday September 19th and finishing between 14:00 and 15:00 on that same day. All courses are subject to enrollment. Note that there will be a change of venue this year. We’ve been lucky enough to secure classroom space in the Rollo Center and all classes will be held there. Lastly, Agathe Gaulin and I are planning a series of workshops focused on helping squadron members with practical seamanship skills. Depending on interest, we’re considering practical on-the-water exercises focused on electronic and radar navigation, low light and low visibility naviga-tion, maritime radio procedures, anchoring, docking and man-overboard procedures and drills.

Respectfully submitted,

Bert terHart, Educational Officer

CPS-ECP and the EnvironmentEnvironmental issues are one of the many concerns of CPS-ECP. There has been a Na-tional environmental officer and similar officer positions are encouraged in our Districts and Squadrons. The proposed anchorages close the east shore of Gabriola Island for five cape-size ships to carry coal is of concern to many of us from an environmental stand-point. Many see fishing directly negatively affected as well as risk to shoreline. A flotilla of 80 boats, including a number of Squadron members with their boats, joined in a for-mation in the shape of one of these ships on a sunny afternoon August 2. Here are a few pictures, including some unexpected, but most welcomed, visitors.
