Dear Parishioners and Friends: Tuesday the church honors Saint Monica, mother of Saint Augustine, whose feast wecelebrate Wednesday. Monica, a devoutChristian born in modern day Algeria, was aclose friend of the Bishop, Saint Ambrose.Monica spent much of her life praying for theconversion of both her husband, Patricius, aviolent man, as well as her son, Augustine. Augustine himself was an academic and aseeker, never content with the manyphilosophical schools of his day. Patricius wouldeventually accept Baptism. Augustine’sintellectual journey took him through manyphilosophies, but it wasn't until he read Scriptureand discovered Christ that he found meaning inhis search. Monica prayed twenty seven yearsfor the conversion of her son, and finally at theEaster Vigil in 387, Augustine and his son,Adeodatus (‘given by God’), were both baptizedby Bishop Ambrose. in Milan, Italy. Augustinewould go on to become Bishop of Hippo in NorthAfrica, and became one of the great Doctors ofthe Church, writing his Confessions and City ofGod. We are reminded of the power of the familyand friends in the spiritual life, and the need forfraternal support in the living out of our Christianfaith- Monica, Patricius, Augustine, Adeodatus,Ambrose all came closer to God through theirmutual patience and support. After a mysticalvision, Monica died in 387 at Ostia Antica in Italy.Augustine recounts her words to him: “Son,nothing in this world affords me delight. I do notknow what there is left for me…all my hopes inthis world now being fulfilled.” School begins in a week a half, and this year wemark a new beginning in the history of BlessedSacrament School with the opening of our twocampuses. The Lower School, headed by Mr.Nick Fargione opens here at Blessed Sacramentwith the Upper School, headed by Mrs. MeganGonzales, opening at Sacred Heart on52ndStreet. We pray for all our faculty, staff, andstudents, that they might have a successful year, and we welcome Mrs. Maureen Noonan as ournew Principal. We continue to pray for Father John Duffell, forresolution and peace, and we prepare towelcome Father David Nolan, who begins histerm as Pastor here on September 1. As always, pray for peace.

Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time • August 25th,2019

Jesús no responde directamente a supregunta. Rev D’Angelo Jiménez Bibliografía P. A. Pagola. Welcome to Your New Pastor. Gifts from BethlehemOlivewood Handcrafted from the Holy Land

A Traditional Art and Livelihood for holy Land Christians

The handicrafts trade evolved as a cultural tradition of Christians in the Holy Land for many centuries. This indigenous formof art has since become an industry of great importance to the local people of the Holy Land who rely on it for livelihood, and to Christian pilgrims from all around the world whose holy pilgrimage can be memorialized for a lifetime in cherishedolive wood or mother of pearl souvenirs. The olive wood carving market is the major source of income in the Bethlehem

area. More than 65 percent of the income of the community in Bethlehem comes from this work.

In recent years, however, the holy crafts trade has suffered many hardships due to social and economical pressures.Because of a sharp fall in tourism and also as a result of diminishing numbers of craftsmen who leave their traditional trade

and emigrate due to the difficult conditions in their homeland, the Holy Land handicraft market is facing serious danger, and so is the Christian community in the Land. Sixty five years ago the Christians represented more than 28% of the total

population in the Holy Land, today they are less than 1.5%.The loss of Christians in the land of Christianity’s birth willrepresent a tragedy of immeasurable proportions for the billions of Christians worldwide.

Please make sure to visit our table this weekend after every mass in the vestibule.

Thank you for your vital support for a Christian tradition and in protecting this very important culture and industry.
