NEWSLETTER 2017 PRESIDENT’S REPORT As the final ‘dash’ to the end of the year is upon us, I want to share some of our highlights with you, and I do so with a smile, for we have had a term complete with lovely events, that we are proud to have hosted. We began this term with ‘My Father’s Coat’, a talk by guest speaker, Michael Charlton, who received a standing ovation for his dynamic recount of a period in South African history. This was an event enjoyed by pupils, parents, and Old Girls, and we really should host many more similar events. This talk was followed shortly, by our eighth A Blooming Affair, our charity fundraiser. The weather was a little tricky, but we still managed to have an outstanding day and raise funds for The Roedean Academy, The Link@Yeoville, and First Things First, our community partners. A heartfelt thank you to the entire Roedean community for braving the weather and making the day such a success. We held our annual jumble sale, which was so appreciated by the staff. Thank you to all the parents for their generous donations. This is such a worthwhile and rewarding event in our calendar! In October 2017, Rosemary Snow, Headmistress of the Junior School from 1956 to 1971, died, and we held a memorial service for her, followed by a tea in Bear’s Courtyard in her honour. Rosemary is very close to SAORA’s heart, as she is our largest benefactor to date and wanted this fact to remain anonymous until her death. Rosemary donated funds for bursaries to us in 2006. We paid tribute to Rosemary for the wonderful legacy she has left us. Also in October, we joined Gillian Boltman and Megan Raines at the Orientation and Welcome of the 2018 Grade 0s and their parents. Each girl was given a long- stemmed white rose and the Roedean Centenary Book, and I gave a talk to both the parents and the girls, telling them about SAORA and the school’s history and heritage. Finally, we hosted a lunch in order to thank the members of the Roedean community for the role they play in our lives. We said a big ‘Thank You’ to the Roedean Executive team for its continuous support; a warm ‘Thank You’ to all the members of staff who greet us with smiles on a daily basis and bend over backwards to assist us; a sincere ‘Thank You’ to the volunteers in the SAORA Uniform Shop, who give of their time so generously, and a heartfelt ‘Thank You’ to the SAORA staff and committee, whose hard work is so appreciated. S.A.O.R.A. NEWSLETTER 2017

The first Saturday of October is a firm fixture in the school calendar for A Blooming Affair - now in its eighth year.

This fundraising event is organised by the SAORA with proceeds going to The Roedean Academy, as well as a percentage to the Link Literacy Project@ Yeoville. It is a day where we welcome parents, Old Girls and members of the public to our school and beautiful gardens.

Fiorina and Selwyn Jansen once again hosted their very popular garden walk, sharing their phenomenal knowledge of the Roedean gardens and horticultural expertise. Treasures to be discovered: women writers who may need an introduction! was the title of Digby Ricci’s talk. Digby is certainly a Roedean treasure and his talk is always a highlight. The Music department and the girls of the Roedean Jazz Band, String and Flute ensembles, as well as the Chamber Choir delighted us all with their musical talent and were a wonderful addition to the fun, gentle and happy day that A Blooming Affair is.

As always, there was an eclectic mix of craft stalls to tempt the shoppers as well as beautiful plants for sale, including our roses which are especially grown by Ludwig’s Roses for our day. There was also an extensive food offering including gourmet burgers, waffles, craft beer and our famous ‘champagne’ and salmon slices for tired shoppers and patient husbands.

The raffle prize winners were:Wheelbarrow full of gardening goodies: Lelon PrinslooHampers: Paige Martin and Nambita Mazwi

A heartfelt ‘thank you’ to all those who braved the uncertain weather conditions and came to support our fundraising efforts.

SAORA Cocktail Party Cape Town The annual Cape Town get-together this year was held at the elegant Andros Hotel in Claremont. Old Girls both young and old, mingled and chatted as they caught up on news of ‘old’ school friends. Lindsay Lawrence, the President of SAORA, gave a short review on the activities of SAORA, and then introduced Murray Thomas, the Executive Head of Roedean, who had flown down from Johannesburg to meet the Capetonians. He gave the Old Girls an update on the current happenings at the school and the achievements of the pupils. The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all, and we are already planning next year’s event!

The SAORA Jumble Sale

The SAORA Jumble Sale, for the benefit of the support staff, was a great success this year. A big ‘Thank You’ to everyone who donated clothes for this worthy cause. There was great excitement at 15h00 when the sale start-ed, and the support staff were delighted to be able to buy good-quality second hand clothes at very reasonable prices.

The money raised goes towards SAORA bursaries, and the ‘left-over’ clothes were donated to the following charity organisations:• the Kwethu children’s village and the Isibani

My Father’s Coat – talk by Michael Charton

SAORA, in conjunction with Marj Brown and the Roedean History Department, were privileged to host historian and entertainer Michael Charton, telling his story My Father’s Coat, on Tuesday 03 October 2017.

Roedean has been busy with # Finding Our Story, the challenge of transformation, and Michael’s talk linked in with this theme by interweaving the lives of five great leaders who were influential in shaping present-day South Africa. The audience found the presentation moving and though-provoking, and Michael received a standing ovation.

“Sock-drop” Initiative

The SAORA has joined Sexy Socks in a focussed “sock-drop”. Sexy Socks is a company that manufactures and sells locally made bamboo socks and runs a wonderful sponsorship programme. For every pair of socks the company sells, it donates one pair of school socks to different schools across the country. When Sexy Socks do the “sock-drop” at a school, it also offers a presentation on entrepreneurship and business. Sexy Socks was selling its exciting socks at A Blooming Affair in October 2017, and, at that time, we combined with it to sell the school socks through the Roedean Uniform shop. The drive is to collect as many pairs of school socks to be donated to Banarto Park Girls School at a “sock-drop” event. The white school socks are in the Uniform Shop at the moment, and girls and parents have been encouraged to buy a pair to be included in the “sock-drop”. Each pair of socks costs just R20.

Barnato Park Girls’ School has been selected as the school at which the “sock- drop” will take place as this is a partner school with Roedean, and the school at which the Roedean Academy attend their daily lessons.

We are now appealing to the SAORA body to contribute to this collection, as well. If you can contribute, by paying R20 (per pair; therefore, multiples of R20) into the SAORA bank account (details below), it will boost this

collection in order for us to make a significant contribution to the planned “sock- drop”. Please note that this appeal is a single appeal, and will not be repeat-ed. This is your last chance to be part of a novel initiative! Bank Details – please reference payment with your name and “sock-drop” for ease of recon-ciliation.

osemary Green(née Snow)RA Tribute to Rosemary Green - a major benefactor of Roedean School

Rosemary Green (nee Snow), former Junior School Headmistress from 1956 – 1971, passed away in Switzerland in October 2017. A memorial service for her was held at Roedean School (SA), and the following tribute was made by Val Beaumont:

Rosemary is best known in this community for her role as a member of staff and Headmistress of Roedean. But, there is another story I wish to tell.

In 2006, Mrs Rosemary Green wrote to the S.A.O.R.A from her home in Switzerland. It was fol-lowing the death of her husband, Roger. It was in the early days of the Scholarships and Bursa-ries Committee, which I chaired and she wrote

Dear Val

I decided with my hus-band Roger that we would donate funds to various projects close to our hearts. Roedean has always held special memories for me and I would like to donate ₤100 000 to the S.A.O.R.A. Bursary funds.

It was a privilege to acknowledge and receive, on behalf of the Old Girls, this extraordinary gift. We arranged to meet with her.

Following her guidance and discussions, her requests were implemented via the Roedean Scholarships and Bursaries Committee. It was agreed with her that:

Though it is a sad occasion, it is a most fitting to announce publicly this magnificently generous gesture.

She leaves a legacy which will not only remind generations that follow of one of our very special Roedean family members, but she has also ensured a good education at Roedean for an ongoing group of girls who may otherwise have lost this opportunity.

Rosemary we salute and thank you!

Memories from Rosemary Green (nèe Snow), former Junior School Headmistress from 1956 – 1971.Below is an email Rosemary sent to Peta Woolcott in 2007 and we thought it might be of interest!

Dear Peta, Below are the names of some of the boys who came to Roedean in the late 1950s and early 1960s.These boys’ names are dredged up from my memory. I just remember them, as little boys. • the gift would be invested and managed along with the balance of the S.A.O.R.A. bursary funds;

• it was to be ringfenced and only the proceeds of the investment drawn down. This ensures the sustainability of the bursary;

• proceeds from the investment would be be made available to Roedean girls when the payment of fees becomes difficult through personal circumstances;

• the bursary does not depend on whether or not the pupil is a daughter of an Old Girl. It was important to Rosemary only that “the child is worthy of a Roedean ed-ucation”. The bursary is, therefore, open to all pupils at the school;

• the adjudication of this grant and the amount awarded to any girl would be at the discretion of the S.A.O.R.A. commit-tee in conjunction with the management of the school.

Most particularly, Rosemary requested that the donation not be publicised until after her death and that it be called the ROGREEN Bursary in memory of Roger and herself.

Congratulations to Antoinette and Basil Hersov who recently celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Antoinette’s ‘words of wisdom’ on a successful marriage are: “It is based on give and take, and a careful and acceptable balance between the two.”

CONGRATULATIONS!

On Monday 23 October, Monica Murray (Matric: 2012) and two other Gold Award holders, from three different parts of South Africa, set off to the Czech Republic for an unforgettable week of new experiences, learning, and life-long friendship making. Monica reports:

“We joined a diverse group of young people of varying ages and cultures and were divided into groups and given the task of approaching a business or organisation within the Czech Republic or Slovakia, and finding a way for this business or organisation to be able to over the President’s Award (or The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award as it is internationally known) to young people.

My group’s project, “Use your opportunity” was about reaching out to the young members of the Roma community in Ústí nad Labem (about 91km from Prague). It was an incredibly eye-opening experience; I had no idea about the extent of racism and prejudice against the Roma people, not just in the Czech Republic, but all over Europe. We based our project on how the Award could be introduced into organisations like Clovek v tísni in a way that would ensure that the Award was well run and could be sustained in the long term. We presented our project to a panel of investors, who could potentially fund our idea and bring it to life in the Czech Republic. Our presentation was a success.

Following the presentations was the highly anticipated announcement of the Emerging Leaders, the chosen International Gold Event delegates, who will represent their regions on the International Council for the next three years. What an honour to hear my name being called out and to have been chosen by my African peers as one of two Emerging Leaders with the chance to be part of the Council that governs how the Award is run internationally!

Now that I am home, I can fully reflect on what an extraordinary experience the International Gold Event was. I will also prepare myself for the next three years in which I aim to help promote the Award as what I, the International Council, and the wider Award family believe to be, “the champion of non-formal education.”

Monica Murray

Monica Murray (second from right) and delegates

Mevagh Glyn (nèe Laing) (Matric:1948) visited A Blooming Affair which was held in October, and this visit evoked memories of her school days at Roedean, which she shares with us below:

At the Sumner building, I saw a Matric student’s brilliant life-size installation made out of chicken wire. It was a life-size waste cart puller, sitting, legs open and head bent down. One of the plane trees outside reminded me of the time that a schoolmate put a bursting pod down the back of my shirt and djibbah, and I prickled for days. I crossed the Koi pond to the Hersov block, designed by my cousin Neil Duncan, who was married to Sheena Sinclair of Black Sash fame, and there was the Roedean Academy display stand. The Academy has been in operation since 2009, and pupils from the under-resourced Banarto Park School in Yeoville, walk to Roedean daily. They are given lunch, attend classes from 15h30 to 17h00, and also use Roedean’s facilities, such as the library and computer room. To date, many Academy girls are attending university, or are enjoying some form of tertiary education, such as internships and teacher learnerships.

The Hersov Block was once a tennis court, which had four plum trees alongside it. We boarders, supposed to be watching the tennis, always hoped a plum would drop straight into our mouths, as if we were caught stealing a plum, we were punished with a dose of Castor oil/cascar mix for more potency. A flash-back was of my daughter, Rowena, who was the last player out of five when she did her Matric piano practical in the Hersov Block. Miss Pudney came banging out of her music room at the time to tell me that Rowena was the most musical of them all. I remembered also, when my music teacher was so enraged by my lack of practice and concentration, that she threw my books out the window into a flower bed which was being watered at the time. Miss Clendinnon must have forgiven me, as, when she left Roedean, she gave me one of her favourite books, inscribed with a warm note.

In Founders Hall, I found amazing stalls - the one appealing to me was ‘jazzy socks’ made out of bamboo. Over one stall I saw a Board which listed Head Girls and included Sheena Sinclair (Duncan) and her sister, Elizabeth. I passed through the Rose Garden in radiant bloom. This is in memory of Miss ‘Juicy’ Edwards, one of the founders, and my name was on the Donations Plaque.

On Bears Terrace, amongst more stalls, I talked to Janet Saner (nèe Anderson) on her way to count money. Bears Lawn was also full of special stalls, and I remembered that climbing the bank in my day was cause for a housemark and that we boarders had a Kamikaze-type game once: it entailed squeezing a victim from behind very hard in the hope that said person would faint.

Just before the rain came down, I went home and I know that all the store-holders closed then too, after a very successful event.

(Editor’s note: due to space restraints, these articles have been shortened).

oedean Academy

The Roedean Academy Prize Giving Roedean School (SA) spearheads a community programme called The Roedean Academy which focuses on providing English, Mathematics, Accounting and Physical Science lessons to high school pupils from Barnato High School. This is a donor funded initiative and has been running successfully since its inception in 2009.

The Roedean Academy Prize Giving took place on 14 October, 2017, in Founders Hall at Roedean School (SA). It was a wonderful occasion, filled with much celebration, as the girls delighted in their own achievements, as well as the achievements of their friends.

The Academy Director, Ms Sandi McCallum, spoke about the Academy and outlined its achievements and progress during the course of 2017. After the speech, the Executive Head of Roedean School, Mr Murray Thomas, handed out the certificates and book prizes to the delighted recipients.

“Thank you” speeches by the girls followed the prizes. This was a highlight for all of the guests as the girls paid remarkable tributes to their teachers. All were impressed by the confidence of the speakers, and by the passion and eloquence of their tributes to the significant impact of their teachers’ dedication to them.

After the speeches, there was a message to the Matric girls by Mrs Caroline Green who imparted great advice to the girls. Following this, Mrs Agnes Nugent announced the two winners of the Realema Teaching Intern Programme. Realema is an excellent programme run by St Johns College and offers teaching bursaries and internships to deserving students.

Following the Prize Giving, the Academy Girls, teachers, parents, and guests were treated to a sumptuous tea in the beautiful Roedean Gardens. It was a very special day and all present left with a sense of fulfilment and achievement.
