CHRISTMAS WITH THE SALTFORD SINGERS

Friday & Saturday 8th & 9th December 1995 at 7.4Spm A programme of carols from many countries. Tickets from Wendy Knight 0117 986 4785 or Pat Martin 01225 874081. For further information see Sectional Organisation News.

LIGHTING OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE

Thursday 14th December at 7.30 pm in Saltford Hall

This is one of the highlights of the SCA Calendar of Events, and this year we are giving it a new look. All the old favourites will be included, the Saltford School children's choir and orchestra and the Saltford Singers, but this year we have a very special guest joining us for a short time. Stuart Tuckwell will be helping me to light the Christmas tree (knowing Stuart I hope it is only the tree we light!!) and John Smee will be giving us some superb lighting effects. Coupled with some Christmas stories, some lighthearted poetry and some lusty singing of favourite Christmas Carols, we hope you will thoroughly enjoy the evening. John Carne, the Methodist Minister from Keynsham, will give us the Blessing at the end of the evening so we hope we can send you all home from Saltford Hall full of good cheer and looking forward to a really Happy Christmas. (Julia Chandler)

Saltford Singers

"Xmas with the Singers" is the title we have chosen for our Concert on 8th & 9th December. We trust it will provide a "sound" base from which to start your Christmas festivities. The programme includes carols from many countries (sung in English) which can help us to appreciate the universal unity of Christianity and the world-wide feeling of goodwill to all. A local "First" will be our singing of a cycle of carols from Czechslovakia, and very pleasant they are too. There are also carols from France, Mexico, Poland, Spain, Venezuela and the West Indies. What a selection of places to anticipate during our own "Bleak MidWinter" . Book your holiday now! Don't be left out! There will be opportunity for you to join in the singing and we have not forgotten the English carols too. If you haven't got your tickets you can do so from any member of the Saltford Singers or make arrangements by telephoning Wendy Knight on 0117 986

4785 or Pat Martin on 01225 874081. This will be the final concert under the guidance of our Conductor David Roberts, so don't miss this opportunity to enjoy the fruits of our labours. Later in the month, on 14th, we shall be joining with others in the "Lighting of the Christmas Tree" ceremony and look forward to seeing many of you there. We still have an opening for a new Conductor from January and all the help you can give to locating him or her will be sincerely appreciated. (LH)

Saltford Painting Club

The club are holding a Christmas Exhibition of paintings at Saltford Hall as part of the Christmas Fayre on Saturday 2nd December at lO.OOam. Although the Fayre is only open in the morning the exhibition will continue until 4.00pm and members will be providing afternoon tea.

Saltford Drama Club

We have just finished a very successful production of Alan Ayckbournc's "Absurd Person Singular". This play is set in the three separate kitchens of three different houses so you can imagine that the always resourceful backstage crew were stretched to the limit but they coped admirably with their usual efficiency and good humour. Now - on to a Pair of Polly Potted Panto's!! We shall be delighting you with two One Act Pantomimes on the 25, 26 and 27th January - Cinderella Revisited -this tells what is happening to our Prince Charming and his Bride after they have been married for 20 years and, as you can imagine, the Fairy Godmother's magic is decidedly rusty! The second half of the evening will be "Ali's Barbara" with much hissing and booing of the wicked "Uncle Cassim" and, ·we hope, the odd sand dance thrown in for good measure. May I take this opportunity of thanking all our patrons for their support in the past and we look forward to your continued support during 1996. It is so much more rewarding to play to a "packed house" and really does make all the hard work that always goes into every production, very worthwhile. See you at the Pantomime - oh yes we will!!! Julia Chandler, President Drama Club.

SCA Announcements

Thanks to John Caile In October, the Editor of SCAN, or Newsline as John called it, advised the Association that he wished to resign as Editor, although he was willing to produce one more issue. Our thanks are extended to John for the careful work that he has put into producing the last four issues and for showing us all just what style and quality could now be achieved. John devoted a large amount of his time and talents to the publication using his own PC equipment. Replacing the availability of all this presented quite a problem, but had to be faced sooner or later. The "sooner" option has been taken, and this issue therefore appears somewhat different.

Editing and Production of SCAN All the material for SCAN is produced by local voluntary effort using whatever facilities volunteers have available to them. This issue has been produced on a fairly basic Personal Computer equipped with a good quality Word Processor software package. To simplify the production, no art work, grey tones, pictures or logos have been used as they were not available. Since these all complicate both typing and printing, this has greatly helped to reduce the job to a more sustainable level. Consideration is also being given to the extent of future contents, and perhaps reverting entirely to a monthly issue, or publishing a small basic newsheet in the intervening months between the main bi-monthly issues. What happens will depend upon the availability of help and if you would like to join the SCA team that runs Saltford Community Association and Saltford Hall by assisting with your typing, word processing, or desk top publishing skills please let us know by contacting Ron Anderton (0117 986 2467) or John Thomas (0117 986 3869)

Read on to Find Out the Possible Rewards As the Association has had "a crisis" in how to continue producing the Newsheet, it seemed appropriate to include the article on Page 11, "Past Editors of SCAN". As readers will conclude, it could be said, "Its all happened before!" One thing can certainly be said "There's no pay, in working for the SCA!" Sometimes however, other rewards come through such efforts and as the article shows. In that case, a lifelong friendship between two families. Perhaps you will reap something just as valuable if you take up the challenge!

Copy for SCAN Until further notice, Sectional and Affiliated Organisations should send copy for inclusion in SCAN to the Assistant Editor, Richard Davies, "Y-DERI" High Street, Saltford, Bristol, BS18 3EJ or contact him on 01225 872699. Alternatively, if more convenient, you may deliver copy for the time being to 13, Claverton Road, Saltford.

The copy deadline for the February/March issue is 18th January 1996. "Y-DERI" is on the West side of High Street, between Church Square and the Bird in Hand with wrought iron gates at the entrance and 50 yards from the Bird in Hand. Advertisers have been separately advised by letter of changes that affect them.

Past Editors of SCAN R.E.(Dick) Mould - October 1963 - April 1979

By far the longest serving Editor of SCAN, Dick Mould's tour of duty served to consolidate the recently launched Newsheet and create the abiding institute that it is in the life of Saltford today. The untimely death of the founder Editor, Major Hyde, at the age of sixty-three left a gap that proved difficult to fill. Indeed, by August 1963 the position was still vacant which prompted Dick to visit Percy Broughton, who was then Secretary to the Saltford Community Association to find out what the work entailed. This meeting was to have a profound impact on the future of SCAN because, during it, Gordon Reed turned up out of the blue. On hearing that Percy was having a chat with someone interested in becoming Editor of SCAN, Gordon's eyes lit up like beacons. With his usual single-mindedness of purpose two things happened, namely SCAN had a new Editor, with a promise of help from Gordon and a lifelong association between the Reeds and Moulds had been forged. Curiously, it was magazines that brought Dick and Ann to Saltford in 1955, certainly not on the editorial side of the business, but in sales and distribution. SCAN had its growing pains like all newly launched ventures tend to have. Printing was done on an old Multilith which included attachments, and, for the first nineteen years of its existence, John Dunce managed to coax it into producing the Newsheet on time month after month. Latterly he received valuable assistance from Herbert James and Bill Stock whose generous services to the community were acknowledged in the January, 1981 publication of SCAN Dick never had an Assistant Editor but insists that he probably had the equivalent of two in his wife Ann whom he met in 1948. They have two sons, Christopher and Nicholas and four lovely grandchildren. Dick resigned as Editor after seventeen years because he felt that an injection of new blood with fresh ideas would revitalise the Newsheet. Succeeding Editors have done him justice. SCAN is now a solid part of Saltford life and its durability can be traced back to the tireless efforts of Dick Mould. (Contributed by Richard Davies)

************************************************* John Rudderham

We 'have learnt that John has left Saltford. John was a very active supporter of the Community Association, as was his late wife, Dorothy. He was a member of the Council of the Community Association and also an ex Avon County Councillor. We wish him every happiness in his new abode. If anyone wishes to get in touch with John would they contact Saltford 873388, for his address. (JT)

Robin and Nell

Far away in the West if my memory runs well, There lived a young couple named Robin and Nell, They had courted a long time, til at last Robin said, We've courted long enough, so let us get wed. At once Nell consented, so Robin began, To furnish the house, like a sensible man, The day was appointed, the ring Robin got, Then sought out a parson, to tie up the knot, After fixing the price, and also the night, I'll be there, said the parson, all being right. Away'Robin went & soon the night came, Wheri Nell was to change, her sweet

. maiden name, Together they went to their new little home, To wait there until the new parson should come, They waited & waited, but no parson came near, Of course the young couple thought it was queer, And when very late, a knock came at the door, That was the parson, they felt pretty sure, But on opening the door, a note they obtained, Which said that the parson, that night was detained, It also did state, that if they would stay,

14

He would come very early next day. When Robin saw this, he was sore perplexed, But with Nell at his side, he could not be vexed, When Nell said to Robin, What are we to do, We have but one bed but wish we had two, Oh, I can seUie that, Nell quickly replied, Put a chair in the centre, the bed is wide, And to show him she meant just what she said, She took hold of a chair & and placed in the bed, So Robin complied, Nell's plan was so good, He could not object, I wonder who could. Being now very late they began to undress, The feeling of Robin, I cannot express, As he got into bed with the greatest of care, And lay down with his face towards the chair, So that he might gaze between the legs of the chair, On Nell's sweet lips and beautiful hair, Oh, how tempting thought he, is a woman like that. I really can't wonder how poor Adam felt, He sighed, he peeped, he peeped, he sighed, And thought no mortal was ever so tried, Oh, how his heart beat, as his fair Nellie breathed, And he saw the clothes move as her sweet bosom heaved. But as she had told him , Don't move the chair, · He at last turned over in utter despair.

The night did seem long, hut when the day broke, Nell played on him a serious joke. Not saying a word from the bed she arose, And at once began to put on her clothes, When Robin saw this, he jumped out of bed, And asked what was wrong to which Nell said, "I'm going home!" and she threw back her hair, I'll never marry a fellow, who won't move a chair, All young fellows take warning, & always beware, The price Robin paid for not moving a chair, And through life remember, the saying is true, When a woman says don't she may sometimes mean do!

And perhaps one for tl1e Children!

A Tale of a Nose

T'was a hard case that which happened in Lynn, Haven't you heard it, eh, well then to begin, There's a man down there whom they call old mose, Who travels about and buys old clothes.

Now Mose, which the same is short for Moses, Had one of the biggest kind of noses, It had a sort of an instep in it, And he fed it with snuff about once a minute.

15

One day he got in a bit of a row, With a German chap who had kissed his Frau, And trying to punch him a Ia mace, Had his nose cut ofT close up to his face.

He picked it up from off the ground, And quickly back in its place was bound, Keeping the bandage upon his face, Until it had fairly healed in place.

Alas for Moses t'was a sad mistake, Which he in his haste that day did make, For to add still more to his bitter cup, He found he had placed it wrong side up.

There is no great loss without some pain, And Moses says in a jocular vein, He arranged it so for taking snuff, As he never before could get enough.

One thing, by the way he forgets to add, Which makes the arrangement rather bad, Although he can take his snuff with ease, He has to stand on his head to sneeze.

On 27th September 53 members set out to "invade" Buckingham Palace travelling from the Crown pub on an "Eagle" coach. After a stop at the new Reading Services their "Pilot" pointed out the various landmarks of London until they reached Covent Garden, where, as stalwart TG members with their brollies they made it to lunch through pouring rain. Afterwards, they continued to the palace and with just a minute to spare they invaded. The scan for weapons however confirmed that they had planned a peaceful invasion. After the red carpet treatment and the canopied board walk
