Mrs Edna HoriuchiDan I. Inouye, Campaign CommitteeHonolulu, Hawaii

Dear Edna:The Molokai Democratic Party was never more prosperous in spirit, harmony, membership, even in money. At present my estimate of campaign workers ratio is: Democrats 100, Republicans 5.The Primary is over and we are satisfied with our effort in County and Congressional Campaign. Dan’s vote here is understood, but surprisingly more people participated in the County Democratic primary this year. We also had a Treasurer elimination in 1958.The important thing now is our General election rally scheduled for

SATURDAY, SEPT. 29thKalaupapa 10:00 AM to 2:00

(According to plane schedule, approximate)

Molokai Center------- 7:30 P.M.Rallies on Molokai is a one shot deal, whereas other islands have many rallies and other functions. Therefore, will you try your best to fit Dan to the Molokai schedule.

Dan can omit Kalaupapa visit if he wishes. But you must send or arrange to have some one speak for him there, either:

1. a Honolulu speaker (known Hawaiian)2. Elmer Cravalho (most likely he will go as campaign chm.) 3. James Izumi

Dan can save a whole day Saturday by coming to Molokai in the afternoon, for our night rally only. I plan to have Mrs Helen Kaopuiki,( former Kalaupapaworker-resident, not a patient) accompany the speaker. I don't know who will go there for Kennedy.

Aloha

Edward Shimabukurops: Remember, Elmer Cravalho set

our schedule early for Dan.I forgot to say that I cannot make the trip to your city this weekend.

I am tied up with someother activities here.

OCTOBER 24, 1960

About this grand rally to be held in Hilo Nov. 7 evening, did you contact J ack Burns ??? How about Maggie ????? Maybe wahine touch at the rally will draw a bigger crowd huh/// The Democratic party wants somebody from the outside so will you find out and let me know few days before the rally (Nov, 7 ).

Dear Edna:

A student, David Onizuka from the Hilo Intermediate School came in my officethe other day to get some information on Dan's campaign to be heldin their school. I know you're busy and also the Congressman but try and get this to me as soon as possible for the boy's sake. I think this boy David is the campaign manager cause he came with half dozen workers....Here's what he wants to know...

No. 1 Political experience before he became our Congressman2 Qualifications3 Age4 Schooling (education)

\ 5 Platform\ 6 What he plans to do if re-elected

7 What ksx&hxxkx should be done for the State of Hawaii\ 8 Life as a Congressman in D. C.

I started to give the answers from 1 to 4 from the yellow card that I have butI got stuck from 5, 6, 7, and 8 so I'm passing on to you.

I hope you told Henry or Chicken about the trunk type cards and the banners I ordered. If you don't have enough banners send about half a dozen and 50 Hxxsja more trunk type cards.

One of these days I might ask for Alfred Laureta to go out in the country area where lots of Filipinox voters. (Hamakua district)

I was also thinking about Bill Jarrett for the Keaukaha area but the last Primary rally at that area, just a handful of voters came so it's waste of time and money. In fact we beat Titcomb by 10 votes during the primary election.Nothing much beside that so I'll pau here. The Hilo people are still talking about the smash up job Titcomb got during the last debate over the T. V.Are they planing another debate over the T V ????? The people thought it was rather short debate for half an hour.. They want about an hour show if Titcomb pays. / O /

To: Morio Omori

Received the banners and have shipped some to Kalaupapa. Molokai expenses w il l run about 50 to $75, we can take care of this here. Names of contributors and workers w i l l be mailed you a fte r election.

I ASK ONE FAVOR: PLEASE ARRANGE SO DAN‘S NEXT VISIT TO MOLOKAI

WILL COINCIDE WITH THE MAUI SUPERVISORS' ELECTION CAMPAIGN ITINERARY.

THIS IS IMPORTANT TO ME: EXPENSES WILL BE NIL, AND BENEFIT GREAT.

PAST EXPERIENCE INDICATES THAT THE PARTY WHICH DRAWS A BIGGER RALLY

CROWD, WILL SHOW A GAIN AT THE POLLS. EDDIE TAM WILL NEED THIS HELP THIS YEAR.

SO: 1. DAN'S VISIT WILL DOUBLE THE ATTENDANCE.\

2. BOOST FOR DEMOCRATIC SUPERVISORS.

3. DAN'S FIRST CHANCE TO SPEAK TO A LARGE OPEN GATHERING.

Morio Omori, Esq.Attorney at LawRoom 200, Capital Investment Bldg.Honolulu, HawaiiDear Morio:

This is just to let you know that our organizational structure re. Dan's campaign is being tied up with that of Kennedy and Johnson.

Elmer Cravalho, Zuke Matsui and I have already met and have discussed the set-up. Since there will be a shortage of workers and since some of them will be tied up with the local races, we decided that the best way to get around this problem is to share our work force and campaign office. The latter is necessary, because there are no vacant offices available in Wailuku Town, unless we share.

When do you plan to send us campaign material? I imagine you must be having your problems, too. For the present, if possible, could you send up more bumper stickers and the like?

Mr. Koike, who has a Japanese program over KMVI daily on weekdays (3:45 pm - 5:00 pm) and Sundays (1:30 pm - 5:00 pm), has asked me to request that Dan's father-in-law, Mr. Toku- yoshi Awamura, prepare two taped speeches of 5 minutes duration each for use over KMVI. Mr. Koike would like to use one before the primary and one before the general. He says that this was done last year. Could you make arrangements for same and confirm this with me.

Also, Mr. Koike says that Maggie had prepared two taped speeches last year, too. He'd like to know whether he may get this, too, for his program. He wants these limited to 3 minutes or so.

So much for now. Let me know of new developments.

Sincerely,

FMI:koFrancis M. Izumi

Congressman Daniel K. Inouye Room 200Capitol Investment Building Honolulu, Hawaii

Dear Sir:

Next Monday night, November 7th, all programs after 6:30 PM are being preempted for the "Aloha State Election Rally". This program is being presented in the public interest by our network of stations in cooperation with candidates and party officials.

On Monday, October 24th, a rating was held with representatives of both parties and all candidates. At that tine, certain agreements were reached which determined the order in which candidates would appear and the amount of time accorded to eachcandidate. The Oahu segment will begin at approximately 10:00 PM. Each Mayorality candidate will have six minutes in which to speck with Mr. Blaisdell being the first speaker and Mr. Fasi the second. Then, in accordance with the agreement, councilman candidates will appear for two and one-half minutes each. A Democrat will be the first speaker followed by a Republican and on down the line. Candidates for council- man will proceed alphabetically by party with the at large candidates leading off followed by the 8th, 9th and 10th District. The councilman candidates will be followed by the congressional candidates with Mr. Inouye being the first speaker and Mr. Titcomb the second. It is requested that you bring a campaign poster with you for mounting behind the podium during your address. It is also requested that you be at our studios at 1290 Ala Moans Blvd. at least twenty minutes prior to the time that you are scheduled to appear. In order that we take a minimum of your time, a special telephone has been established so that you may call and confirm the time of your appearance while the program is in progress. This has been set up so that in case the program runs early or late, we will be sure to keep you informed. The telephone number is 66003. Please be sure to check this number once or twice during the evening.Your scheduled time is approximately 1 1:20PMYou will follow Ben F. Kalto and precede Frederick J. Titcomb

All commercial announcements and progress have been deleted except for mentions of sponsors who have relinquished their time so that the program could be telecast. Sterling Mossman will be the master of ceremonies — backed by the Barefoot Bar Gang, Kenny Alford and the Dixiecats and a hula line. We are assured that every candidate of the neighbor islands will appear and we certainly hope that you will help us make this “Aloha State Election Rally“ complete by joining us.

Very truly yours.

1. Now we know why Kamaka gets elected from a Republican district. He sort of makes onefeel like an old friend in a short time. Old friends votes for old friendswhether they are republicans or Democrats.

2. We had a very successful rally, one of the best. We want Dan to appear personally at our general election rally in October. Especially because this may be our last chance to vote for Dan as a congressman if we have2 congressmen and the State is divided in 2 districts.

3. Goro Hokama and I talked it over and we both will attend the critique meeting. Please give time and place.

Enclosed you will find a certified copy showing the total number of voters of this county.

Dan will be receiving three sets from the County Clerks office of all the registered voters of Kauai County. I was wondering if I could have two sets for checking voters list. As you know on Kauai we usually go and get last minute voters to the poll, this is why I am asking for the two sets one for Herbert and me. If this is Okav with vou. will you please write to theclerks office. nicky _ OVER----

Mrs. Edna Y. Horiuchi Room 200Capitol Investment Bldg. Honolulu, Hawaii

Dear Edna:

I was just informed that the assessment for Dan's campaign here in the Big Island will be $60.00 for east Hawaii and $30.00 for the west Hawaii district. The party wants the money in by this Friday (16th) since it will be the first night the candidate will be going stumping. You can either send it to me or send it direct to Representative Stanley Hara, Finance chairman for this rally. This morning I received 2 packages of Dan’s cards through the Hawaiian Airlines, Toshi Serizawa. I think I have enough for the primary and general so do not send till I ask for it.

On Dan’s arrival date in Hilo (Wed. 21st) please let me know early as to the plane arrival time so I can arrange the schedule with the Hilo Intermediate School and the St. Joseph School on presentation of 50th Star Flag.By the way Edna, if you want me to send some cards over to Kona area to Harold Fujita, let me know cause I don’t want to send extra from Hilo if the Honolulu Office is planning to send some to Kona. Please check with Chicken Yamada.Pau for now , and everything is O.K. in the Big Island. Dan is pulling no. 1 on the list so far.

Wailuku, Maui, HawaiiSeptember 13, 1960

Morio Omori, Esq.Attorney at LawRoom 200, Capital Investment Bldg. Honolulu, HawaiiDear Morio:

Didn't get a chance to see you when I was down there this past week end. I was pretty much tied up with our Jaycee Fall Board meeting in Heeia and Kailua.

Anyway, thanks a lot for the $750 check. I gave the breakdown of expected expenditures to Edna, verbally. But for your information, here is the breakdown:

Democratic Rally Assessment (Primary & General) ...... $175.00Newspaper & Radio .................................. 400.00Miscellaneous ..................................... . 175.00

$750.00According to Kase, who is campaign manager for the County

candidates, the charge per candidate, County or otherwise, will be a flat $100 for the primary rallies. For the general, the charge necessarily remains undetermined, depending on the balance realized from the primary's expenses. But it should be less than $100 .

As for newspaper and radio, Jimmy (who is managing finances) informs me that he spent $300 plus last year. I have already received the schedule of rates from KMVI Radio Station-- they're pretty stiff.

The miscellaneous will take care of plane fares to Molokai and Lanai and to Kalaupapa; also Dan's and Maggie's hotel accommodations, leis, etc.

Needless to say, any balance left over will be returned to you at the end of the campaign activities and elections.

Perhaps, Edna explained to you that it would be very inadvisable for us to conduct a fund drive for Dan here on Maui. Three other fund drives are, or will shortly be, underway, including Kennedy, Eddie Tam, and Democratic Party. To hit the people a fourth time would be too much.

Mr. Elmer Cravalho, Chairman Democratic Party of Maui County Wailuku, Maui, HawaiiDear Elmer:We are trying to schedule Dan Inouye's Molokai visit to coincide with our County General Election Rally in October. You will agree that his presence will greatly help our County Ticket. Therefore, please mail as soon as possible the October rally schedule to Edna Y. Horiuchi, Dan's Executive Secretary. There seems to be a trend or indications that a good rally attendance will bring good results at the polls on Molokai.I have been watching the crowds, and the up and downs goes with rally attendance.People don't like the term "Mr. so and so will speak on behalfof-----------" The appearance of Dan will double theattendance, and we will have a better showing at the polls.

Sincerely, Ed

Edna Y. Horiuchi Administrative Secretary For Congressman Daniel K. Inouye Capital Investment Bldg.Honolulu3 HawaiiDear Edna:We realize that Dan has a tight schedule this month. It is our opinion that it is not necessary for Dan to Visit Molokai this month, since he already made a visit in August. We will insist that Dan visit Molokai in October for our General Election Rally. See copy of letter addressed to Elmer Cravalho. Please line up someone to speak for Dan at air Primary Election Rally which will be held on Saturday night, Sept. 24th.

Sincerely,
