FEAST DAYS THIS WEEK

St. Teresa of Calcutta - September 5th c.1910-1997 Mother Teresa’s beatification, just over six years after her death,

was part of an expedited process put into effect by Pope John Paul II. Like so many others around the world, he

found her love for the Eucharist, for prayer, and for the poor a model for all to emulate.

Blessed Frédéric Ozanam - September 9th c.1813-1853 A man convinced of the inestimable worth of each human

being, Frédéric served the poor of Paris well and drew others into serving the poor of the world. Through the Saint

Vincent de Paul Society, which he founded, his work continues to the present day.

FROM FR. KEN - Welcome the Stranger

As we have watched the events unfold in Afghanistan we are aware that the

Richmond area is one of the primary regions where refugees are coming and

we can be their first experience of hospitality in this country. Please pray about

walking with a family by helping them navigate life in the US - registering for

school, getting a drivers' license, finding medical services, etc. As more peo-

ple come into our area, we'll be hearing more about this need. Common

wealth Catholic Charities has a refugee mentoring program more information

can be found at saintbridgetchurch.org. Let us welcome the stranger among

us.

CHALLENGE OF THE MONTH

Pop Quiz: what is the first thing we learn in scripture about God? We hear

it in the first five words: “In the beginning, God created...” (1 Genesis 1).

The primary thing revealed to us about God is that he is creative. The

earth and the sky, the waters, the heavens, flora and fauna, humanity,

God calls all of these things into existence and God’s fingerprints are eve-

rywhere—visible signs of God’s invisible presence. The beautiful thing

about theology (and science, art, anthropology, history, literature, etc.) is

that when we reflect upon the creation, we learn about the creator. This

month, the Holy Father calls us to reflect upon the world and natural re-

sources God has created for us. More than that, we are challenged to

act intentionally as stewards of our universal home. Stewardship is about

protecting and honoring the gifts God has given us. As we are stewards

of our time, our talents, our wealth, our families, and our community, we

are stewards of creation and the natural world. Join the Holy Father this

month in praying for our world, that we might be good stewards of it and

that through stewardship God’s glory would be proclaimed.

Note: For more on creation, check out Catechism of the Catholic Church

pp. 293-301 and 2415-2418, it’s beautiful.

MASS READINGS & SYNOPSIS

First Reading Isaiah 35:4-7a

Isaiah prophesies about God’s vindication.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 146:7,8-9,9-10

A song of praise to God

Second Reading James 2:1-5

James teaches that there is to be no partiality within the Christian com-

munity.

Gospel Reading Mark 7:31-37

Jesus restores a man’s hearing and speech.

Background on the Gospel Reading

In today’s reading, Jesus heals a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment. In this story about Jesus’

healing power, we find clues about our understanding of sacrament. We are struck by the physical means used

to heal the man, the use of spittle and touch. The Church continues to celebrate the sacraments using physical

means. In the Sacrament of Baptism, water and oil are used to show the power of the Holy Spirit. In the Sacra-

ment of the Anointing of the Sick, we are anointed with holy oil on the forehead and the hands. In the Eucharist,

bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. We are a sacramental people who believe that God’s

grace is given to us through these physical signs.

Some, however, see in this Gospel an image of the proclamation of the good news of Jesus to the Gentiles. The

geographic references tell us that Jesus is journeying through Gentile territory. Jesus had previously visited this re-

gion and healed a person possessed by a demon. Jesus was already famous there, which explains why people

brought the deaf man to him.

Mark shows that Jesus’ own mission affirms the early Church’s mission to the Gentiles. This was a significant issue

to the early Christian community, which found that the good news of Jesus took root and spread quickly among

the Gentiles. Yet there is an irony in the story of healing that Mark tells. Jesus gives the man the gift of speech, but

then tells him not to use it. Jesus asks that the news of his healing power, which is evidence of his identity as the

Messiah, not be spread. This is a recurring motif in Mark’s Gospel and is sometimes called the “messianic secret.”

SCHOOL NEWS

We enjoyed our first day of school on Tuesday, August 24. All students and staff had a wonderful day filled with

friends, learning and fellowship. You may have noticed a significant improvement to our School Playground. New

mulch was placed this summer - it is not only safer but also aesthetically pleasing and adds a little bounce for the

kids! There are many other updates that occurred over the summer to spruce up the school, update classrooms

and showcase our new school logo. Students and staff enjoyed their first Spirit Day on Friday, August 27. It was an

excellent way to celebrate a successful start and to acknowledge how blessed we are to be together again in

the school building for the upcoming school year.
