B

Dear Traveler,

There is nothing like traveling to Europe in the fall and winter time. Towns are less crowded, aromas of the season fill the air and twinkling lights guide you through the festive holiday markets.

Last year, Viking introduced our Fall Celebrations cruise series and after spectacular success, we are presenting it to you again this year. Reserve a European river cruise in November and treat yourself; leave the cooking to us and come celebrate Thanksgiving (and other European holidays) with the Viking family. Or celebrate the season during the weeks leading up to Christmas with visits to the region’s famous Christmas markets.

The easiest and most pleasurable way to move from one town to the next is on Europe’s rivers. And our beautiful new fleet of Viking Lonships will take you there in style andcomfort. As always, our all-inclusive packages include everything—port charges, meals, enriching lectures and at least one shore excursion every day; and traveling in the later season provides more value pricing than the higher months.

To make your reservation, contact your travel agent or call 1-877-668-4546. We look forward to sharing the holidays with you. Sincerely Yours,

Torstein Hagen Chairman

P.S. Enjoy a free box of chocolates aboard all November and December Viking Longship departures.

GINGERBREAD HOUSES

Watch as Karine and chef Joanna build a traditional gingerbread house from scratch. From dough to baking, building and decorating, you will share in the fun as a fully decorated house comes to life.

GREAT GIFTS FROM THE DANUBE

Karine offers personal insight into some of the Danube region’s most coveted gifts and tasty treats—from gourmet chocolates and beeswax candles to Vienna’s famous Sachertorte from Hotel Sacher.

ADVENT WREATHS

Making traditional advent wreaths are fun and easy with step-by-step instructions. Watch as a local wreathmaker uses three key components—a straw ring, steel wire and pine needles—to create a seasonal masterpiece.

WARM AND SPICY

Karine offers a wonderful recipe for glühwein, a warm wintertime libation. The aroma of the hot, mulled wine—with cinnamon, cloves and other spices—fills the air and warms you from the inside out.

CELEBRATE WITH VIKING ONLINEJoin Karine on an insider’s video tour through Europe’s Christmas markets,

as she shares age-old gingerbread traditions, teaches you to make handcrafted

wreaths and introduces you to the warm treat of glühwein. She invites you to

come explore Europe’s winter wonderland and see how no one can share Europe’s

Christmas markets with you like Viking can.

X Basel’s festive Christmas market

THE MAGIC OF EUROPEAN CHRISTMASWinter is a magical time of year in Europe, with fairytale, snow-topped castles

and mountains, and a wonderful festive spirit everywhere. In Europe’s Christmas

markets the air is filled with the scents of gingerbread and warm, spicy glühwein,

and the tunes of traditional carols can be heard around every corner. What better

way to experience Christmas traditions—in the lands where they originated.

FLOAT INTO THE FESTIVE SEASON

A river cruise through Europe—with visits to its colorful Christmas markets—is the most atmospheric way to enjoy the holiday spirit. Let your deluxe river cruise ship take you from one alluring city to another, enjoying the sights and sounds of a traditional Christmas. Shop for local crafts, from handmade Christmas decorations and nutcrackers to scented candles, woolen clothing and homemade gingerbread.

A FEAST FOR THE SENSES

With their ancient history and dramatic architectural backdrops, the romantic towns of Europe put on a magical show at Christmas time. The central squares and cobbled streets are filled with stalls emanating lovely scents, sounds and tastes. A CELEBRATION OF FINE FOOD

Succulent turkey with caramelized vegetables grown in Germany’s market gardens. Clementines poached in red wine from vineyards in Austria’s Wachau Valley. Pumpkin pie made with pumpkins grown in northern France. And with your freshly caught salmon? Hand-picked dill from the organic herb garden on the sun deck of a Viking Longship. Our chefs use fresh, locally sourced ingredients to create authentic dishes that are bursting with flavor.

CASUAL DINING IN ELEGANT STYLE

Greet the morning with a sumptuous breakfast buffet in the dining room, pick up a croissant and cappuccino and go to the sun deck to watch the river come to life. Lunch presents yet more choice with a selection of inspiring dishes. When evening falls, the artistry in the kitchen culminates in a masterpiece of a multi-course

dinner, with a menu that incorporates traditional influences as well as contemporary cuisine. There is no more relaxing place to share good food, good wine and stories, with friends—old and new — than in our intimate dining room.

SOMETHING DELICIOUS TO PAMPER EVERY PALATE

Lighter choices, vegetarian dishes—our chefs work with nutritionists to provide a selection of balanced options. And, because some days you feel like a simple supper, a perfectly grilled steak, chicken breast, grilled salmon and Caesar salad is always an option.

AND TO DRINK?

Freshly brewed coffee in the lounge, as you gaze at the river’s early morning mist. Iced tea on the sun deck, as you pass villages shaped by time. A bottle of fine local wine served with lunch or dinner — enjoy it all — it is all covered in your cruise fare.

JOIN US ON A DELIGHTFUL THANKSGIVING JOURNEYThere are few greater pleasures than fine food. Indeed, much of the joy of

travel is the discovery of new and exciting cuisine. On a Viking cruise, you can

look forward to a variety of regional foods that gives you a true flavor of each

inspiring place you visit, all beautifully prepared and presented by our highly

trained chefs. As with every aspect of a Viking vacation, the choice is yours.

CELEBRATE THE SEASON WITH VIKINGWhat more relaxing or rewarding way to explore Europe than from the river?

Gently gliding alongside enchanting landscapes and medieval villages right into

the heart of the world’s great cities, there really is no more memorable vacation.

Spring and summer in Europe are lovely times to sail, but travel in the fall,

and you’ll see the rich, jeweled colors of forests and vineyards. There are fewer

people, so you can enjoy more room to discover Europe’s many attractions, and

more opportunity to encounter the locals. And, by choosing to travel later in

the season, you will benefit from our value pricing; in fact, you can travel for

approximately half the price of the higher months.

FALL IN LOVE WITH EUROPE...IN THE FALL

We invite you to join us in November when you can treat yourself, leave the cooking to us and come celebrate Thanksgiving with the Viking family. With a nod to a home-cooked meal, a traditional Thanksgiving feast—roasted turkey with all the trimmings—will be served on each November departure.

DISCOVER LOCAL TRADITIONS

Throughout your cruise, you will discover a number of special days celebrated by the locals. Listen as local children explain the tradition of carrying their lanterns door to door to commemorate the feast of St. Martin’s Day. Sample a “soul pretzel,” a traditional treat baked specifically for All Souls’ Day. Learn about the significance of Erntedankfest, the German counterpart to Thanksgiving.

MELK’S GOLDEN ABBEY

As you sail along a peaceful stretch of the Danube, you approach a gold and ivory imperial fortress, resplendent with elegant details. Once a palace, the abbey at Melk is now a Benedictine monastery, school, museum and a library housing some 80,000 rare books and scrolls. See its interior, featuring soaring frescoes on walls and ceilings, and a glorious spiral staircase, on your tour.

DANUBE’S OLDEST CITY

AUSTRIA’S WACHAU VALLEY

The Wachau Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, nestled between the quaint Austrian cities of Melk and Krems along the Danube River. Many picturesque towns and vineyards are located along this 24-mile stretch, and the area is perfect for a leisurely sailing.

CLASSICAL MUSIC CAPITAL

Known as the “City of Waltzes,” Austria’s capital of Vienna is widely considered to be the center of classical music. Here Strauss, Beethoven and Mozart composed many of their best-known works. Visitors can tour the homes of these famous composers and those of Haydn, Schubert, Brahms and more — now museums.

THE NUREMBERG CHRISTMAS ANGELEvery year, Germany’s most famous Christmas market opens its stalls to nearly two million visitors from around the world. At 5:30 p.m. on the Friday before the first Advent Sunday, the beautiful Christmas Angel recites a prologue from the gallery of the Church of Our Lady.

With her white and golden dress, long blonde hair and golden crown, Nuremberg’s Christmas Angel is kept busy in the days and weeks following the opening of the market. She visits seniors at home, kindergartens, institutions and hospitals, bringing joy to many people.

Nuremberg’s Christmas Angel has become famous in places as far away as the United States—Chicago’s Christkindlmarket is fashioned after the market in Nuremberg, and as by tradition is opened each year by the previous Nuremberg Christmas Angel.

MEDIEVAL TOLL BOOTHS

The castles along the Rhine Valley were originally constructed as fortified residences to protect the land from marauders — but castle owners also utilized their strategically advantageous positions to impose tolls on passing merchants. This may explain why you will see so many castles while cruising the 35-mile stretch of the Rhine between Mainz and Bonn.

ANCIENT HEIDELBERG

Heidelberg is home to Germany’s oldest university, founded in 1386. It also features one of the Rhine’s most distinctive landmarks — the red sandstone ruins of Heidelberg Castle. Situated high above the town, the castle has sweeping views of the Neckar River Valley and Heidelberg’s red-roofed charm.

ALSATIAN CUISINE

This region produces a savory cuisine that perfectly merges hearty German fare with French elegance. A typical dish is choucroute, featuring fermented white cabbage layered with spicy smoked pork —best served with potatoes and an Alsatian pinot blanc. Other meat specialties include Baeckeoffe, a traditional stew of marinated beef or lamb; charcuterie, sausages and other cured meats; goose liver pâté and Muenster cheese.

COLOGNE’S CATHEDRAL

For a short time, the Cologne Cathedral was the world’s tallest building with its magnificent spires rising above the city. The cathedral’s construction took over 600 years to complete. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is a stunning example of Gothic architecture.

ENJOY THE TASTE OF GLÜHWEINServed hot, sweet and spiced, glühwein warms you up nicely at the end of the day. Warm and fragrant, it is a delicious mulled wine that’s so easy to make, you can prepare it at home. Not only does glühwein taste good, it also fills your home with a wonderfully festive aroma.

Ingredients: 1 liter bottle robust red wine 1 cardamom pod 1 tsp ground cinnamon or Juice of 1 orange and 1 cinnamon stick 1 lemon 2-3 cups sugar (to taste) 1 tsp cloves

Method: Add all ingredients to a saucepan. Heat until nearly boiling; then strain into a pre-warmed bowl or jug. Serve warm with cookies or festive desserts.

A SCENIC MAIN RIVER

Everyone knows about the beauty of the Rhine and the Danube’s lovely Wachau Valley, but the Main River— an important Rhine tributary—is a little-known scenic treasure. Picture-perfect vineyards and unspoiled hamlets line the river as you sail along.

CHARLEMAGNE’S DREAM

Some 1,200 years ago, Emperor Charlemagne contemplated connecting the Rhine, Main and Danube to facilitate river travel through Europe. Lack of technical resources prevented this idea from being realized—until the Main-Danube Canal was completed in 1992. Employing ingenious river locks, vessels can now travel 2,200 miles through 10 countries, from the North Sea to the Black Sea.

BAVARIAN BAMBERG

Founded in 902, Bamberg’s Old Town area is a beautifully preserved UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk past neat rows of patrician houses to the remarkable Old City Hall, sited in the middle of the Regnitz River and accessed by bridges on both sides. During free time, sample the town’s famous smoky beer, Rauchbier.

EUROPEAN WINE REIGONS This itinerary takes you through several of Europe’s famous wine regions. Enjoy the sun-drenched white Rieslings of the Moselle and Rhine region, the Franconian wines along the Main and the peppery Grüner Veltliners in the Wachau Valley. And, be sure to try the rich dessert wines of Hungary.

BRATISLAVA BRONZES

If you look carefully, you will notice that not everyone in Bratislava is made of flesh and blood. Some of the Slovakian capital’s most beloved citizens are cast in bronze. The most famous is Cumil, the Watcher, peeking out from a manhole in the street. There are others here and there; keep your eyes peeled!

THE TOWN OF MUSICThe fourth-largest city in Austria, Salzburg is known for its great beauty, and for being the setting for the musical and film, The Sound of Music. It is the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whose childhood home can still be seen. The baroque Old Town area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spend a delightful day there on this itinerary.

TREASURES IN BUDAPESTA quick stroll from the dock in Budapest takes you to one of the city’s best marketplaces — the Great Market Hall, established in 1897. A variety of shopping stalls await you —supermarket and fishmongers in the basement, greengrocers and spice vendors on street level, fine linens, knickknacks and delicious Hungarian treats on the floor above. A must-see.

SAMPLE VIENNA’S MOST WANTEDLuckily, two delicious treats on your Vienna to-do list — the traditional Sachertorte and the city’s famous coffee — can be savored together. The original Sachertorte recipe has been a closely guarded Hotel Sacher secret since 1832, but most coffeehouses sell their own versions. Enjoy a cup of Viennese coffee and a sweet treat.

THE LEGEND OF THE NUTCRACKERIn German’s Christmas markets, you’ll see nutcrackers of all shapes, colors and sizes. According to German folklore, nutcrackers were given as keepsakes to protect your home and bring good luck to your family. A fierce protector, the nutcracker bares its teeth to the evil spirits and guards your family from danger. Nutcrackers were a part of traditional dining customs—the more amusing and unusual the nutcracker, the better, as it provided a whimsical conversation piece for guests who lingered over the dessert course, which included pecans and hazelnuts.

Writers, composers and artists immortalized the nutcracker, including Amadeus Hoffman who, in 1816, wrote his novel, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Hoffman’s story was the inspiration for Tchaikovsky’s famous Nutcracker Suite, which debuted as a ballet in St. Petersburg in 1892, and is, to this day, a favorite holiday tradition around the world.

STROLL THROUGH OLDNUREMBERG

The Bavarian capital of Nuremberg holds a unique place in Germany’s history. Tour the city’s most prominent landmarks with a walk through the iconic Christmas market laid out in the Old Town’s Main Market Square. Take free time to browse—there is no better place to shop for handmade wooden toys and nutcrackers—and taste traditional local treats like the skinny local bratwurst sausages, glühwein(hot spiced wine) and lebkuchen(gingerbread cookies). You may even spot the golden curls of the Christkind,an angel who brings children’s toys.

JEWELS OF NORTHERN BAVARIA

Begin with a walk through Würzburg and a tour of the Bishops’ Residenz, a beautiful baroque palace with many paintings and frescoes. Then, ride in a deluxe motorcoach along the Romantic Road to Rothenberg ob der Tauber. Stop for a hearty lunch in a local restaurant and take time to explore this medieval town. Rothenberg is home to Germany’s Christmas Museum, open all year, and offers a local pastry, the Schneeball (snowball), to try.

TOUR NORMANDY’S HISTORIC BEACHES

See World War II landmarks and Omaha Beach. Spend time at the Arromanches Debarkment Museum and pay your respects at the American Military Cemetery. On the way back to your ship, pass Gold Beach, Courseulles sur Mer and Juno Beach.

GOTHIC ROUEN

Founded by the Romans, Rouen is situated amidst the chalk cliffs along the Seine and filled with half-timbered houses and exquisite Gothic architecture. The city is known for its role in the heroic tragedy of Joan of Arc, patron saint of France. Tried and

condemned for heresy, she was burned alive at the stake in Rouen’s Old Marketplace in May 1431.

CAMEMBERT AND CALVADOS

Camembert — a soft, creamy cheese, traditionally aged for at least three weeks — was first made in Normandy in the late 18th century. When in northern France, sample this buttery delight at room temperature with a slice of French bread and a few grapes or apple slices. And speaking of delicious, try some calvados — a brandy made from the plentiful local apples, which also produce a wide variety of ciders.

CRUISE, TOUR & AIR PRICING NOTES & OFFER RESTRICTIONS

Pricing Notes: On all sail dates the discount is per stateroom based on double occupancy. Single supplement savings are off applicable rates. Cruise fares listed are cruise only in U.S. dollars, per person, based on double occupancy. Cruise fares listed are valid for North American residents only. Cruise ship fuel surcharge may apply.

All fares and offers are for new bookings only as of March 1, 2013, are subject to availability, may not be combinable with other offers except Past Guest Travel Credit and Referral Rewards Credit, are capacity controlled and may be withdrawn at any time without prior notice. Fares are based upon published full brochure fares; all cruise fares are cruise only, and do not include pre-paid charges, optional facilities and service fees, and personal charges, as defined in the terms and conditions of the Passenger Ticket Contract. Full brochure fares may not have resulted in actual sales in all stateroom categories and may not have been in effect during the last 90 days. Promotional fares may remain in effect after the expiration date. Air promotion applies to economy, roundtrip flights only from select Viking North American gateways and includes airport-to-ship or hotel transfers, air taxes and air fuel surcharges. Viking reserves the right to correct errors or omissions and to change any and all fares, fees and surcharges at any time. For up-to-date prices, please call Viking at 1-877-668-4546. The cruise ship fuel surcharge is additional revenue to Viking, as does any additional charge relating to currency fluctuation other than for fully paid cruise fares and full fares, which fluctuations are beyond our control. Additional terms and conditions may apply. Complete terms and conditions may be found in the Passenger Ticket Contract at vikingrivercruises.com.

International Airfare: Air prices are per person based on the cruise/cruisetour check-in date, and include transfers plus all government taxes and fees of approximately $160 and air fuel surcharges. Paid Business or Premium Economy Class may require travel in economy on flights within the United States or Europe. Air seats are limited; airfares are subject to change until full payment of air is received. If air is not purchased from Viking, transfers may be purchased separately. All transfers, included with airfare or purchased separately, must be with flights that arrive/depart on ship or included hotel check-in/check-out day only. Additional airline imposed baggage charges may apply; consult your airline. Additional gateways are available; visit our website or call 1-877-668-4546 for current prices. Additional terms and conditions may be viewed at vikingrivercruises.com.
