President’s Report It’s been a great honour and my absolute pleasure to be your Club President this year. As I mentioned when elected at last year’s AGM – I last held this position exactly two decades ago. While many of the fundamentals of the Club like a family focused culture, strong values, and a friendly social environment have fortunately remained – it’s amazing to see how much the game of hockey and players’ development have advanced, as well as the corresponding increase in the underlying demands of operating a Club with over now 750 members.

Off-Field Team As I have said many times before the hardest working team in the Club is management. I would like to give a special thanks to this year’s management team consisting of Cecilia Blamey, Dani Colubriale, Larry McIntosh, Kirrily Pereira, Andrew Ramsay, Meg Smith, James Stephens and Jess White.

I would also like to thank a number of others for their significant contribution via working groups and associated supporting roles including: Steve Besanvalle, Charles Calleja, Tim Collier, Ben Craig, Shaun Dobbin, Jess Dobbin, Steve Dunn, Scott Familton, Bruce Farquharson, Greg Findley, David Goosakoff, Gary Goosakoff, Mick Gunner, Erin Kelly, Alison Keogh, Darcy Keogh, Jeff McEwen, Matt McKay, Dean Merchant, Dave Moore, Scott Morrison, Kiona Nicholl, Drew Parker, Shelly Pole, Pippa Quilty, Gina Rees, Richard Sharp, Billy Shaw, Simone Sookias, Phil Welsman, Ben Wilson, and Maurie Dawson. Thank you all for your outstanding contributions and dedication.

For those who aren’t continuing in your role – I wish you the best and hope your return to assist the Club in another capacity when able. With that said – I would particularly like to congratulate Cecilia Blamey for winning the highly prestigious Club Person of the Year Award. I thank her for her contribution this year as Women’s President and for her many years of service.

On-Field Season This season we fielded 37 teams (excluding-Minkies) across Women’s and Men’s, Juniors and Masters. That is the most teams fielded by any Club in Sydney and again makes us one of the largest hockey clubs in Australia. I wish to sincerely congratulate and thank all the coaches, managers, assistants, umpires, coordinators, selectors, canteen staff, ball persons, general helpers and supporters – for without your major contributions and commitment throughout the season there would be no sport for us all to enjoy.

Massive congratulations to all the players who took the field this year. Well done to all the players who won awards with special mention to Susan Matthews and Mick Dillion for taking out the prestigious Judy Goosakoff and Pop Reece trophies respectively.

This season of our 37 teams we had 26 or just over 70% of teams across the entire Club make their respective finals. Of that 26 teams, seven or 27% (of the teams that made the finals or 19% of our total teams) went on to become major premiers (4 Juniors and 3 Seniors). I would like to congratulate those teams on their outstanding season being:

u11A Panthers coached by Greg Findley u13A Panthers coached by Dan Lidbetter and assistant Carolina Rompeltien u13B Lions coached by Narian Singh and assistant Jonathan Craig u17B Tigers coached by Teaj Sian Men’s 6th grade for defending their premiership coached by Scott Morrison Men’s Master C for their inaugural premiership coached by Steve Reilly Women’s 1st grade for their inaugural premiership coached by Tim Collier.

Well done to all of you. I would like to draw special attention to the supreme feats of our Women’s 1st grade this year. I believe their planning, strategy, dedication, execution and optimisation of resources

Page 7: RYDE HUNTERS HILL DISTRICT HOCKEY CLUB INC.rydehockey.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/2017-RHHDHC...3 Ryde Hunters Hill District Hockey Club Inc. PAST PRESIDENTS PAST WOMENS PRESIDENTS

offers the ideal blueprint for future success across the Club. Throughout the finals they provided the Club with such delights culminating in that first 20 minutes of the grand final being the finest hockey I have ever seen played by a Ryde team in my four decades of watching the sport. Massive congratulations to Tim Collier (Coach – and also was awarded the Club Coach of the Year in honour this year of ANZAC Mr Gordon Scurrah ~ great uncle to Ruby Nicholas in u13s), Gina Rees (Assistant Coach), Larry McIntosh (Special advisor), Jess Dobbin and Jen Manuel (Team Managers), Kiona Nicholl (Captain) and all the players involved. Also congrats to grand final hero Abby Wilson who scored a triple and also went on to be named as the ML1 competition’s leading goal scorer. An amazing achievement. I would also like to acknowledge the prior contribution of many others particularly past - coaches, players, managers and supporters that laid the foundation for such a glorious premiership. Thank you.

On-Field Representative Elite It’s been our finest year for representative hockey. It is great to see the Club’s significant investment in coaching and player development over recent years translating into many of our players reaching elite levels. As a result, we had:

Over 40 State representative players across the Club 10 players in u21s State Nationals Championships 4 players in the Junior World Cup 10 players in the Senior AHL teams Numerous players in the NSW Masters teams at Nationals 2 players in the National Junior u21s squad 4 players in the National Futures Group 4 players in Senior Australian Development Squad 5 players in Senior National Teams, 1 player in the Australian Country team and a number in

National Masters teams. Our players played throughout Australia and travelled the globe from India, South Africa, South America, Europe, the United Kingdom, Japan and New Zealand. Congratulations to all of you. A good problem to have is it is now not practicable to name all of you in this opening report. However, I would like to make special mention (in addition to our current senior national players of Kirsten Pearce, Ben Craig and Tom Craig) – of Mikki “Chops©” Patterson for debuting with the Hockeyroos in November against Japan, AND Kieron Arthur for being the leading goal scorer at the recent AHL championships and subsequently being added to the National development squad along with fellow Ryde players Lachie Sharp and Tim Brand. Extra special mention on Lachie Sharp who on 23 November was added to the Kookaburra’s team for the premier tournament of the year – the World Hockey League Final in India. Amazing news and well deserved. Also, fingers crossed for all our elite players for selection for next year’s Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and the respective World Cup tournaments across Women, Men and Masters.

Special Mentions At the risk of forgetting to mention someone/something important (sorry if I do miss you) – I strongly believe the following warrant special mention:

Meg Smith and Andy Ramsay for your work, support and care as part of the Club Executive. It’s been a pleasure working together this year. I would particularly like to acknowledge Andrew’s 27th consecutive year on management. Amazing dedication to the Club and also a strong pillar of the success of Maurie’s long tenure as President.

Tim Collier for his dedication to the Club and a wonderful two-year campaign as Women’s 1st Grade coach. I would also like to thank Tim for his highly thoughtful counsel throughout this term.

Richard Sharp for his outstanding contribution to Men’s 1st Grade over the last 4 years. Back then he took the reins at a very challenging time for the team and not only forged a champion

Page 8: RYDE HUNTERS HILL DISTRICT HOCKEY CLUB INC.rydehockey.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/2017-RHHDHC...3 Ryde Hunters Hill District Hockey Club Inc. PAST PRESIDENTS PAST WOMENS PRESIDENTS

team (culminating with our 1st men’s premiership in over 50 years in 2015) but also developed them into outstanding young men. Thank you Richard for being such a major part of our Club and guiding so many players on their journey to being the best.

All the members (young and old) that got involved in our Working Bees this year. While often overlooked these activities are so vital for the successful operation of your Facility.

Dave Moore for his outstanding work on promoting the Club on social media. Kirsten Pearce, Ben and Tom Craig for your dedication to the Club from afar. Most times I know

you are a long way away with a primary focus on national team priorities. However, please never underestimate our appreciation of your promotion of the Club and when able your appearances (whether that be a junior presentation event, coaching clinic or club match) when returning back in town. We also greatly appreciate your “behind the scenes” counsel during the year and also your “chaperoning” of our debutants during the commencement of their respective representative journeys.

Simone Sookias for her efforts on the “Working with Children” and the critical work underpinning that program.

Scott Familton on his massive contribution and programming efforts on the Club’s registration system (which included more info on our Club members) and the digitisation of our Club honours board.

Larry McIntosh, Gina Rees, Greg Findley, Dean Merchant, Richard Sharp and Tim Collier for their continued pursuit of excellence with our coaching development framework across the Club.

Dani Colubriale and Jess White for organising Family Day and the Senior Presentation Night. Some of our best events ever.

To both Michelle Pecar who was awarded Club Umpire of the Year and also recently officiated in her first international and Zeke Newman for his continued presence on the international umpiring stage.

Maurie Dawson and Drew Parker for their work developing our youngest and newest members in the Minkey Development Programme. Further congratulations to Maurie on the well-deserved addition of his name to the Club Person of the Year Award and also the Minkey Encouragement Award.

And last but not least - best wishes to Club Captain, u15 Metro Coach, Media Coordinator and 1st Grade Men’s Captain Billy Shaw who moved to Brisbane at the end of the season. Thank you Billy for a wonderful five years at the Club. Your passion, spirit and love for the Club will never be forgotten nor the positive impact you had on so many levels. It was our absolute pleasure to be a part of your journey. We truly envy the Club you will be joining in Brisbane for next season. They don’t yet realise how infinitely lucky they are about to become. Poetically, like The Don, our records show you are stranded on 99. Dare we dream “for one more game!”

Focus for 2018 and Beyond I wanted to take the opportunity to highlight a couple of items, which should remain a focus for the Club in 2018 and beyond, being:

A. Aging home ground facilities – As highlighted at the beginning of the year when introducing the “Works Levy” to all playing members – our home ground facility is over two decades old. It is self-evident to all, many elements of our complex are in urgent need of repair and/or refresh. Consequently, we have a list of works tasks be completed ranging from simple jobs to very large comprehensive works. While we were able to address a number of items like the upgrading of our watering system, drainage issues, and general tidy ups – a number of additional important tasks like the refresh of the toilets and repair of field fencing are yet to be commenced. Importantly, much of the planning work has been done on both of them. However, we subsequently mid-year had the opportunity to apply for additional funding via “dollar (being our dollars) for dollar” government grants – which if obtained would enable us to expand the depth of the works. Unfortunately, we won’t know the outcome until this December with the objective (grant funds + work levy funds) to now have both tasks (along

Page 9: RYDE HUNTERS HILL DISTRICT HOCKEY CLUB INC.rydehockey.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/2017-RHHDHC...3 Ryde Hunters Hill District Hockey Club Inc. PAST PRESIDENTS PAST WOMENS PRESIDENTS

9

with some additional equipment storage) completed by the start of season 2018. On the broader issue of the overall Clubhouse – we have some very early stage draft drawings for a complete redevelopment of the building. While still at a preliminary stage, I believe this needs to be a major focal point for us over the next couple of years.

B. Evolution of our Coaching Framework – One of our fundamental objectives to is afford each and every player the opportunity to be the best they want to be. That can only happen with a long-term investment in our coaching framework. A framework that is available to all, non-negotiable, sustainable and ever improving. Over the last couple of years, we have allocated a large portion of our discretionary dollars towards this endeavour. Post season we have already had a number of meetings with a view to further enhance the framework in a systematic way. More to happen over the coming period.

C. The need for additional recurring revenue sources – Everything we aspire to achieve and/or complete typically has a cost (i.e., coaching programmes, amenities refresh, elite player support etc.). Sometimes it’s the cost of time and labour. Mostly it’s the cost of real dollars. Like all sporting amateur not for profit Clubs the securing of regular income beyond standard player fees is a continual challenge. Plus, we have the additional demands (albeit with some great benefits) of operating and maintaining our home ground which includes the significant expense of turf replacement every 8 years. In addition to other avenues, we have a number of further opportunities to explore to increase revenues. While there is no guarantee, these endeavours are further assisted due to a number of developments around our precinct, as well as the abovementioned long-term redevelopment of our Clubhouse. But this all takes time and energy. Importantly, the more we can leverage off our collective experiences and capabilities etc. – the best chance we have of securing additional revenue streams.

D. Optimise our key assets – Two of our key assets (amongst a number of others) are our Facility and Membership base. Beyond the season proper (i.e., March to Sept) where the Facility is booked to absolute capacity, we are continually looking at ways to ensure the asset is fully utilised (i.e., generate additional income). Whether that be running Summer Comps, renting out the field for other sports, renting the car park or giving access to local businesses for activities etc. This remains a key focus.

For our Membership base this year’s registration process enabled us to understand (without getting creepy) more about you – which in turned enabled us to be better informed when for example seeking the advice of someone in a certain industry like marketing, or seeing who was keen to employ one of our elite players etc. It also provided a clearer profile snapshot of us as a collective – which no doubt will continue to be useful information in our decision-making process. We will continue to seek further ways to understand more about our members and your Club experiences (note – at the time of writing we have just completed a survey of management and associated sub roles – and are also looking to survey all Club members shortly) with the twin objective of endeavouring to understand your expectations, as well as finding the most effective path when we need help. Equally, how we equitably get more of you involved in assisting us is another ever present objective and must remain a priority!

E. What is our objective and how should we make decisions? - At the end of the day we are continually asking ourselves (as we have over many generations before) is our objective as a Club to: win premierships at all costs; OR junior development and growth; OR investment in our Facilities; OR just offer a “customer” experience as one would expect say visiting the local bowling alley (i.e., I pay my money and I just want to bowl – why would you then ask me to also help out in the canteen); OR focusing on 1st grades and development of elite players; OR maximising revenues ...

Personally, I don’t believe there is a single CORRECT answer to this question. Often it’s in the eye of the beholder. That opinion may yet again change as one’s perspective shifts over time and I have no doubt there will be a variety of strong opinions across the Club. However, I do believe the BEST answer is that we are endeavouring to do all of it! And at different times in the

Page 10: RYDE HUNTERS HILL DISTRICT HOCKEY CLUB INC.rydehockey.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/2017-RHHDHC...3 Ryde Hunters Hill District Hockey Club Inc. PAST PRESIDENTS PAST WOMENS PRESIDENTS

10

cycle we might focus a little more on some at the slight cost of the other(s). So what’s a strong basis of how to think about this - when making our future plans? In my experience, I have found a number of unyielding true statements that collectively provide a solid framework when operating a Club such as ours. They are:

1. We are not just competing against other clubs but other sports 2. A club with a home ground turf facility has many material advantages over those Clubs

that don’t 3. Over the long term a club with a lack of juniors will not survive 4. Having a winning culture is good for a club and its members 5. Players (regardless of what grade they play(ed), their age or how long they have been

playing for) still desire to be better players and want to learn 6. Coaches (regardless of what grade they coach(ed), their age or how long they have been

coaching for) still desire to be better coaches and want to learn 7. Having strong 1st grades teams are good for members and the club 8. Seeing fellow players develop into elite players and playing at the highest level is good for

a club and its members 9. People desire to be part of something bigger than themselves and are drawn towards a

culture that is transparent, fair, non-discriminatory and social 10. The more people that regularly assist a club: the more enjoyable it is to be part of; the less

personal opportunity cost there is for those actively involved; and the more sustainable that Club becomes.

Importantly they are all self-evident (albeit generalised), provide solid guideposts, and are not easy to dispute when presented as above.

To Conclude If you made it this far - congrats. I owe you a drink and apologise for the length of my report. However, gratefully there is a lot to appreciate and many good people to acknowledge. Equally, it’s important for all of us to be a part of this conversation.

Special thanks to John Booth AM - our Club Patron and his “The Weekly Times” for their continued support via regular high-quality press exposure. Special thanks also to Ryde State Member (and Minister for Finance, Services and Property) Victor Dominello and Ryde Councillor Roy Maggio for their continued interest, care and support for the Club. Many thanks to our “Club Community Supporters” particularly Bank of Queensland, Foxtel, Quest Apartments North Ryde, Chatswood RSL, Hockey NSW, HockeyZone, Just Hockey, Lunchtimes Legends, MC Hockey Skill Set, Plus Fitness Macquarie Park, Teams Sports, Watermatic Irrigation, VetMed and The Weekly Times.

My final thanks and wishes are to the parents, partners, family, friends, lost love ones and pets – who supported us during this season. I hope you and your family have a safe holiday season and a wonderful New Year. Thanks again for your participation, support and passion. If there is any aspect of this report you would like to discuss further, please don’t hesitate to email me on [email protected].

Good night Samo. See you all in 2018!

Yours in Hockey

Women’s President’s Report Our Masters team this year were placed under the new NSW Association structure, playing under the banner of North West Sydney Hockey and competed in the SWHL Masters competition. Separate report from the Masters President.

Most importantly I would like to highlight that many of the women and men in the club that helped me in this role over 2017. In particular, thank you to Mick Gunner, Gina Rees and Pippa Quilty. I would also like to thank Jess Dobbin for her support in this role but most particularly for taking on the Umpire Coordination Role for the second year.

Also special mention to Steve Dunn for coming back to the Women’s club in 2017-a great contribution and much appreciated.

In 2017 the Ryde Women’s club fielded seven teams, five in the SWHL competition and 2 in the Sydney North Competition. I have attached individual team reports to this document.

COACHING Led by Larry McIntosh and Gina Rees the coaching structures and professionalism across the ranks continued to grow this year.

Gina Rees became the Coaching Director to the Women’s Club in 2017 after joining Ryde as Women’s Coaching Coordinator in 2016. Gina has been an invaluable addition to the Women’s club as both Coaching Director and Assistant Coach to 1st Grade. She has continued to add tremendous value to our selection process and also our coaching programme.

Over 2017 Gina helped the coaches with many of the 2nd to 7th grade training sessions and also attended a number of games for all grades on Sundays providing valuable feedback to our coaches. This was in excess of our expectations of the role.

Working with Larry McIntosh Gina was able to further implement Larry’s coaching programme to the Women’s coaches. This is an area where will focus more in 2018.

SELECTION POLICY The challenges of having teams in ML1, ML2, ML3, ML4 and ML6 grades of the SWHL competition continued in 2017. The big challenge to the Women’s Club under the SWHL rules leaves us very short in our top grades when players have representative duties. Coupled with usual injury, travel and illness we are often having to fill the higher grades and there is a flow on effect to the lower grades which is very challenging for coaches and players. Teams for many weeks of the year are quite unsettled and this is a big challenge for the club.

We are now in the second year of implementation of the revised Ryde Selection Policy to the Women’s Club and the process was much improved in 2017.

Under the guidance of Michael Gunner over the 2017 season we enabled a strengthening of connections across grades, and across teams which we will continue to focus on throughout 2018 to improve our success in the SWHL and SNWHA competitions. Importantly the communication process across the club was very smooth and continued to improve throughout the year. Mick and Gina have put an enormous amount of their own time into this and everyone has benefited.

OUR TEAMS Tim Collier joined the Women’s club as our Head 1st Grade coach in 2016 and brought a professional and enthusiastic approach to the team as well as a wealth of coaching expertise. Tim was assisted again this year by Gina Rees and she imparted her experience in player development and coaching to the team. Larry McIntosh also assisted 1st grade as our High-Performance Director. Our performance in ML1 in 2016 at 5th place was very strong given that our planned numbers changed significantly over the season due to representative duties, travel and injury. In 2017 we again faced

similar number issues but managed to finish fourth on the ladder earning a semi-final berth. The team survived a very tight semi-final going to penalty shootout. They were able to bring a strong performance to win the final and carried that through to an outstanding win in the Grand Final against GNS. Congratulations to the coaches- Tim, Gina and Larry, Managers -Jess Dobbin and Jen Cover and of course the players in the team of 2017 for such a fantastic achievement!!! The club has tried for many years to reach this pinnacle and special mention goes to the team of 2008 (coaches, managers, players in the interim too!) that placed Ryde into the SWHL Division 1 competition all those years ago.

Moving up the SWHL ranks is not easy and Gavin Hughes and our 5th grade team know this only too well. After finishing second last year our 5th grade team managed to take out the SWHL 6 minor premiership which should pave the way for a Ryde team in SWHL 5 for 2018. This will mean our club will hopefully have teams in SWHL 1,2,3,4 and 5 in 2018. Congratulations to Gavin, Trudy, Erin and the 5th grade players. This is a wonderful achievement.

Our 2nd ,3rd and 4th grade teams had a difficult year especially given the drain on their teams when we had absences at the 1st grade level. Some of our young talented players were in these teams and we can look to see further development of these players. Thank you to Ben Willson, Steve Dunn and Mick Gunner for their dedicated approach and coaching expertise over the year. Thank you also to some of the wonderful more experienced players in these teams that assisted in mentoring the younger crew!

Our 6th Grade team played in the Sydney North Competition Division B and placed 4th in the competition and were very unfortunate to lose the semi-final. Congratulations to the players, coaches Ben Warton and Dave Goosakoff and manager Kasia Nowakowski for a fantastic effort. Dave provided his usual enthusiasm on game day with Ben Warton a new coach for Ryde offering up his time to coach the players mid-week.

7th Grade was coached by Mark Sookias for the second year in a row and the team competed in the C grade division of the Sydney North Competition. Over 2017 we saw a great improvement in our players’ skill basis and game strategy. The team had mixed results but certainly a better year for our 7’s. Thank you Mark for a wonderful contribution to the Women’s club over the past 2 years.

Thank you to all our coaches in the Women’s Club Tim Collier, Gina Rees, Larry McIntosh, Ben Willson, Steve Dunn, Michael Gunner, Gav Hughes, Trudy Green, Ben Warton, David Goosakoff and Mark Sookias. Thank you also to the Managers of our teams Jess Dobbin, Jen Cover, Megan Starkey, Meg Baird, Erin Kelly, Kasia Nowakowski, Cecilia Guerrero and Ros O’Sullivan.

Team Best and Fairest Awards are outlined below. Special mention of Abby Wilson from 1st grade on her SWHL award as highest goal scorer for the SWHL competition. Also Zoe MacMillan from 3rd grade on her award as the SWHL ML3 competition Best and Fairest.

Our winner of the Goal Keeper of the Year was Shelly Pole. This year our Goal Keepers continued to go over and above their call of duty and I thank each of you for the efforts you made to fill in where necessary. Thank you, Zoe, Shelly, Leigh, Tess, Caroline, Rosalie and Natalie. Also Georgia, Selina, Kara and Tilly each of whom filled in at various times as we needed!

I would also like to congratulate our players on their representative achievements, a list is attached. Notably our highest representative level for 2017 was with Kirsten Pearce representing New Zealand at the 2017 World League Semi-finals. Congratulations Kirsten. Kirsten is a Ryde junior and it she is a wonderful inspiration and role model to our juniors and women at the club!

EVENTS

Our well-established Ryde Gordon Family Day was well attended by players old and new. This was also very well attended by GNS and we were able to collaborate to ensure a great day for all. Club spirit was also strong on the Ryde Vs Macquarie University day. Thank you to all the contributors to the organisation of these days.

Last year I mentioned the importance of having more social events in the club. Thank you to Dani Colubriale and Jess White top level players from the Women’s club for stepping up at last year’s AGM and taking on the role as social convenors. Congratulations on the fantastic events you have organised this year and for your great contribution to the Ryde Committee. It is great to see young people in the club taking on important roles on the club committee. It is essential to have your voice on the committee.

Going forward: We are a very large club with a very large junior base which is a great source of players. We will need to recognise the importance of identifying juniors to come to Women’s and also improving the transition process for juniors. This also means we need to ensure we concentrate and prioritise development of the skills of our juniors in the Women’s club and ensure they have continuing support from the Women’s club. This will ensure retention of the junior element of the Ryde club.

In addition, we will need to look to further develop the coaching programme and ensure all grades receive more coaching resource.

I also want to thank all the volunteers at our club. I really appreciate your contribution. We have had around 30 volunteers supporting 100 players so a good outcome. THANK YOU TO ALL

Whilst not all of our results were strong our culture as a club continues to improve and the continued commitment from coaches and players will ensure success and enjoyment.

Thank you also to the Ryde Committee for their support, in particular Meg Smith. All the very best for a happy & safe holiday season.

Men’s President’s Report 2017 was another successful year for the Men’s Club across all grades. Despite not getting all the end results we may have wanted, all players, coaches and managers should be extremely proud of 2017. The widespread success of our teams resulted in the majority of ‘Club Championships’ across Sydney Hockey going to Ryde.

Out of 10 Grades, all but 1 reached the finals, a tremendous result and a reflection of all the hard work put in during the season. Fantastic results for 6th, 7th and 9th Grade all of whom secured Minor Premierships.

The post regular season weeks were not as kind to the Club, with many teams going down by single goal margins and falling agonizingly short of either a Grand Final appearance or a Premiership. In all we had five teams go down in Preliminary Finals and three go down in Grand Finals. Needless to say Ryde had a great showing throughout the finals once again.

Congratulations goes to 6th Grade, coached by Scott Morrison, for taking out the Premiership in a hard fought 3-2 victory and a great win for the Club!

I would like to take the time to give a special mention to all of the coaches and managers who took on roles this year and did another wonderful job. As we know, without these guys the Club would not run. I certainly appreciate all the time and effort that goes into putting a team on the park each week, and they should all be commended for delivering time and time again. Special mention should also go to Larry McIntosh who made himself available to all grades and provided expert advice which I have no doubt contributed to the all-round success of the Club.

Some Challenges and Goals Like always we should strive to improve as a Club year on year and there are a few areas to give more attention to next season:

Commitment to the weekly training and games. Although our availability was better than last year, the commitment week to week, especially at training can vastly improve. This will also help when coming down to finals time.

Continuing the exposure/integration of our juniors into the senior ranks. Providing opportunity to athletes to transition into Men’s hockey. This is one of the best parts of being in the biggest Club in Australia and we should embrace the diversity we have across all grades. This can be utilised for personal development both on and off the field.

Although some teams will view 2017 as the ‘one that got away’, I think it’s safe to say that across the Club we had another admirable season. Like always we look to go further next year and I feel the Club is set up to deliver multiple premierships in 2018.

Juniors’ President’s Report What a season! Over 220 kids in 16 junior teams & two Minkey teams took to the fields this year to play some outstanding hockey. We welcomed many new players to the club this year, some moving from other clubs and some from interstate. This year we had a number of players come and try hockey for the first time in every age group, hopefully they enjoyed their experience! The Minkies showed some great basic skills, improving each week and they looked like they were having fun doing it. Of our 16 junior teams 11 made it through to the semi-finals, six to grand finals and we won four ….an awesome effort from everyone involved! The development of the teams during the season was great to watch and the kids all seemed to be enjoying themselves both at training and games.

Congratulations to the 11A Panthers, 13A Panthers, 13B Lions and 17B Tigers for exciting grand final wins this year. They worked hard all season and the results speak for themselves. Well done to the 15A Panthers and 15B Tigers for their great efforts in the grand final; they had the spectators on the edge of their seats to the very end! The Juniors’ club was also awarded the North Area Club Championship for the 15th time in the last 16 years – a massive achievement which wouldn’t be possible without the dedicated players. coaching team and families all working together to achieve great results on the field each week.

This year the junior coaching program moved up a notch with the addition of a Junior Coaching Director, Greg Findley, who worked closely with Larry McIntosh during the season to develop videos and coaching plans for the weekly training sessions. A grading app was developed and used for our initial team selections which made the process much more streamlined and consistent among all selectors and age groups. There is further development occurring to utilise this technology for the weekly training sessions.

We were lucky to have many assistant coaches helping the coaches guide the players through the program this year. There are a lot of talented coaches in our club who volunteer their time on a weekly basis to develop skills in the juniors. They are well supported by our wonderful managers who make sure everyone gets to the right game at the right time, and keeps things calm during stressful games! A special mention to the U15 managers this year who had a difficult job arranging substitute players each week to ensure a full team went out to play.

Our umpire contingent also continues to grow. We had quite a few new umpires join us this year which is fantastic. We also had a number of umpires gain their community level certification which is fantastic. I would encourage all players to consider taking up umpiring next season, it’s a great way to gain a better understanding of the game, and it’s a fun way to earn some extra money! Even though it is often an unappreciated job with little reward this is starting to change and we are lucky that so many of our players are willing to learn and develop their skills. Please continue to encourage our umpires as with your support and positive attitudes it can make their task much more enjoyable for everyone.

Family Day was our big event of the season with teams battling it out on the field against GNS – in games and the relay, filmed by HockeyZone. Our Junior Club Captains for 2017 were announced – congratulations to Darcy Keogh and Bruce Farquharson. So many players and families were involved in this day helping out on the BBQ, cake stall, selling raffle tickets, setting up/packing up, walking 1st grade players onto the field, cheering all the teams on and most importantly socialising which is why this club is such a great family club!

A big thank you to the parents who have battled peak hour traffic each week to get their kids to training and sat on the sidelines in freezing weather to cheer the teams on during their games. Without your support the kids would not be the players they are today.

We said farewell to a number of our U17 players this year as they finish their junior careers and move up to seniors. I know they will be an asset to any team they end up playing with next year. We have a fantastic transition program to make the move from juniors to seniors an enjoyable process and the

senior players are very supportive of all our junior players moving up. I would love to see all our juniors choosing to continue with Ryde, the coaching program continues on at all levels and it would be great to see you developing and utilising the skills learned through your junior career in the senior teams. Keep playing, keep having fun!

The juniors’ club, like every other sports club, would not function without the support of its wonderful volunteers. There are many people who work tirelessly behind the scenes all season and without their help the club would not be the great club it is today. A special thanks to Meg Smith, Alison Keogh, Greg Findley and Fiona Nicholas for their tireless work and support they have given this year. Next year you may like to consider helping out, there are always lots of things that need to be done and many hands do make light work!

Junior Presentation night saw a huge crowd descend on the field to celebrate a successful season, enjoy the BBQ and have fun with friends. We were honoured to have John Cullen, Tom Craig, Ben Craig and Tim Brand attend and present awards. As you can imagine a lot of awards were handed out on the night to recognise our talented group of juniors. See the list below for award winners and team placings.

I have really enjoyed my year of being junior president and I'm excited about hopefully doing it all again next year, it’s getting a little bit easier each year! I have been extremely lucky to have a wonderful support network behind me, from both the club and my family.

Looking forward to seeing everyone back again next year for another fun and exciting year of hockey.

Director of Coaching

RYDE COACHING STRUCTURE

My thanks to the Ryde Management Committee for the opportunity to take on the position of Director of Coaching.

A comprehensive program review was conducted post 2016 Junior season. Thanks to all those who shared their time, experience and vision providing valuable information. Key themes emerging from the review were taken on board in the designing of 2017 coaching program, as there was a need to establish a coaching structure across the Club.

There are two components to the Ryde Coaching Structure Model - juniors and seniors. The Junior Program was the key focus for 2017.

Our Senior Coaching Structure and resources need to be better utilised and coordinated across the Club. The senior component of the coaching structure will be a key focus for 2018.

JUNIOR PROGRAM - COACHING OBJECTIVES There was a need to clearly identify the key program objectives and build additional support mechanisms into the program to address progressive athlete development and coach educational support.

Progressive athlete development Coach education and support Video of two games to provide feedback for athletes, structural and tactical formation, athlete

performances, offensive and defensive playing principles. Designed a Skills Video Package for the junior program. Created nine videos on ball drills addressing the key coaching principles and themes for

coaches and athletes. Created seven videos on warm up drills without the ball. Created four videos on warm up drills with the ball. Coach’s weekly session plan on mobile app allowing access to all drills and skills. Coaching themes throughout the year were out letting, midfield linkages, attacking 1/3 and

goal keeping.

GOAL KEEPING Shelly Pole provided great work this year as our Junior Goal Keeping Coach with assistance of Nick Baltzer and his amazing work throughout the year with his group of goal keepers. This is a key focus area for the Club as we move forward.

SPECIAL THANKS Tim Collier, Sam Liles, Abby Wilson and Tom Craig assisted greatly in the development of the video recourse package, which was a major contribution to the junior program.

ATHLETE MONITORING SYSTEM - PRE-SEASON TRIALS -Ryan Pereira We are very thankful to Ryan and expertise in designing JP app 1 providing an Athlete’s Monitoring System (AMS). The AMS has provided the Junior Program with an extremely valuable resource. The 2017 Junior Program drills and skills were also on line for all coaches.

All athletes were accessed on their skill competencies and game performances using AMS - 1-5 ratings throughout 3 weeks of trials. At the end of each session Kirrily and Ryan were able to download all the data progressively throughout the trials. AMS provided selectors and coaches with a tool that has had a huge impact on this year’s program. Looking forward to the launch of JP app 2 for 2018.

JUNIORS’ PRESIDENT - Kirrily Pereira The support Kirrily provided throughout the year is greatly appreciated. Her contribution to the Junior Program, coordinating and collating the trials, selectors, coaches, players, squads and teams is held in high regard. The club is so thankful for the energy you bring to the program.

JUNIOR COACHING DIRECTOR - Greg Findley The knowledge and energy you bring to the junior program is infectious. Your leadership across the junior program is so important in the progression of our junior’s athletes. I look forward to building on this year’s program as we work to towards finalizing the program design for 2018.

COACHING PLAN PRESENTATION TO COACHES Junior Coaching Director (JCD) Greg Finlay and Larry McIntosh (HDC) met with all coaches and support coaches to present the 2017coaching plan. This process set the foundation of the 2017 key

Page 26: RYDE HUNTERS HILL DISTRICT HOCKEY CLUB INC.rydehockey.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/2017-RHHDHC...3 Ryde Hunters Hill District Hockey Club Inc. PAST PRESIDENTS PAST WOMENS PRESIDENTS

26

program objectives and coaching tools for all the people involved across the program. Due to Kirrily’s help we were able to present the program to a number of parents.

MINKEY PROGRAM - Maurice Dawson and Drew Parker Maurice and Drew’s tireless contribution to the Minkey program much appreciated. The development of the athletes was very noticeable. Taylor Sookias and Lauren May thank you both for your support and the work.

We need to continue to build support mechanisms into the Minkey program, which is so critical in the development of the athlete and the future of the Club.

JUNIOR PROGRAM MID - YEAR REVIEW Coaches to review program Mid-year. JCD and HDC caught up with some coach’s post

training sessions. We need to look at how we can improve this mid-year review. Coaches requesting additional support across their respective groups. White board sessions on playing structures and positional play. Game play #1 - (mini games) coaches provided team objectives. Games to be videoed for

feedback to coaches and athletes. Game play #2 - preparing for the semi-finals. JCD and HCD on field as support for coaches

worked extremely well. Coaches prioritized key game objectives playing with a number of brakes to discuss and

provide feedback to the group. Across the groups there was a common theme addressed by the coaches being defensive

principles and 3D skills. These areas were built into the session plan.

TEAM PERFORMANCES (FINALS) JCD and HCD viewed a number of games leading into the semis including finals and grand finals. Key findings to be shared and implemented into program review are -

1. Defensive principles without the ball. 2. Specialist skills - PC offensive and defensive. 3. Structural formation when out letting with the ball 4. Attacking 1/3 with the ball. 5. Circle outcomes with the ball. 6. Functions and Events The Club hosted a number of key events through 2017. New Players’ Night was an opportunity to introduce new members and their families and to acknowledge a number of members who had reached club milestones.

500 Games: Steve Reilly 250 Games: Cameron Brown, Brett Cox, Mark Cullen, Bec Dawson, Scott Pecar, Michael Sneesby, Mick Thompson Blair 100 1st grade games: Cameron Brown, Jess White, Matt Wright,

Family Day was a vibrant rollicking day with activities from dawn to beyond dusk. There were highlights aplenty including fantastic food, wonderful decorations and club spirit in abundance. Hockey Zone’s coverage of the day enlivened the proceedings (as ever) and there were perennial favourites such as the club raffle, the Junior Club Relay, adjoined this year by the Best Dressed Supporter Dog award. Ryde retained the Ryde-GNS Family Day Cup. In the matches held at Ryde this was through wins to the U11 Jaguars, U11 Panthers, U13 Jaguars, U13 Lions, and the Men’s First, Second, Third and Fourth grade teams. It was the largest Family Day crowd so considerable thanks was due to members for embracing the day so warmly. Presentation Night was very well attended with attendees including NSW Minister for Finance Victor Dominello, Hockey NSW CEO David Thompson and Ryde Councillor Roy Maggio. President Glen Castensen’s speech set the tone for the evening and the atmosphere was particularly festive given the historicity of the club’s inaugural Women’s 1st Grade premiership. Yet quite simply all teams found reasons to celebrate. The dancing was particularly inventive in 2017 and the stayers among club members continued their dancing feats well into the dawn hours. All of these events do not occur without the assistance of many – thanks and appreciation in equal measure to all of those members who provided support and encouragement. Women's Masters Report This year really was a season with a difference for the Ryde women's masters’ players.

For the readers of this report who are not familiar with women's masters’ hockey, I will quickly sketch the background history. Until three years ago, there was no club or association team for the Ryde women to play with in a masters’ competition. Those players who wished to play masters hockey had to join other association teams. Most went to play with either Parramatta or GNS or decided not to play masters.

In 2015 there was a sudden and surprising change to the landscape. After many years of failed nominations, we were able to enter a team of predominantly Ryde players as the Sydney North Women’s Hockey Association team in the SWHL Masters competition, the premier women's masters’ competition in Sydney. The SWHL Masters competition is an association based competition. It has consistently refused entry to club based sides (with the one historical exception of a UTS team). This is unlike the Men’s Masters Competition which is generally club based. The Sydney North team was entered in division 4, as this was the only vacancy in the competition. Due to this mis-grading, the team won every game decisively and was promoted to Division 1 for 2016. Following this second, even more controversial mis-grading, the team was placed in division 2 for 2017.

Initially in 2017 we thought we would again be a stand-alone team, playing the year in the SWHL division 2, wearing the red and black Sydney North Association uniforms. Once again we were also faced with the same problems from the previous two years - many players of widely different skill levels, and only 16 places on the team. Second division was too low a grade for several of our players from 2016, but at the same time it was too high a grade for some of those players wishing to join and rejoin the masters’ competition.

At this point, in line with the NSW Hockey Amalgamations, the North West Sydney Hockey Association formed a committee to steer the amalgamation of all women's masters Association teams within the North West area. This included the Sydney North Women’s Hockey Association, the Parramatta Women's Hockey Association and the Ryde Eastwood Women's Hockey Association, totalling 8 existing teams across the four SWHL grades.

After a number of meetings with the various administrators and players, the Ryde and Sydney North women's masters’ players played at SWHL under the banner of North West Sydney Hockey Association, across four teams. The majority of these players were selected in three teams, one in first division and two in second division. This meant new uniforms and a lot of change and adjustments for everyone. On the down side, not everyone was playing with their usual team mates or friends. On the up side, all players who wished to play masters were able to do so, in the appropriate grade, with no one missing out as they had previously. The number of games played by RHHDHC members is recorded at the conclusion of this report.

The Division 1 team finished the season in 3rd place, but were unfortunately defeated in extra time by North Shore & Beaches in the minor semi-final. Congratulations to Kara, Bernadette, Zara, Letitia and Danielle who played in this team. The Division 2 masters grade saw the NWSHA Blue and NWSHA Red teams finish in third and fourth spot. These two teams, with many Ryde and Sydney North players in each, battled it out for a place in the final. The Blues prevailed and went on to play Campbelltown, but unfortunately lost the final. Congratulations to Jenny, Flavia, Lucinda, Ina, Hannah, Pippa, Belinda, Genevieve, Micky, Selina and coach Trudy (Blues) and Kate, Michelle, Marielle, Chu Wai and Roslyn (Reds) for a great year. In third division the NWSHA team did not make the finals, while in division 4, one of the three NWSHA teams (Reds) finished in second place. A special mention for Ros O'Sullivan in her first year playing masters, who played in division 4. Ros reported that she had a great team of players, very friendly and the season was a lot of fun. Her only wish for improvement is that there are more Ryde players with her for next year.

The Women's Masters Half State Championships were held in July. This year the NWS teams travelled north to sunny Grafton. Six teams were registered in various divisions and age groups. It was a great weekend and one of triumph for the NWSHA first and second teams, with the first team joint winners of division 1 and the second team outright winners of division 2. Well done to Ryde players Bernadette, Danielle, Letitia, Ina, Flavia, Jenny, Selina, Leigh, Lucinda and Pippa who played and Trudy who coached. The 2018 State Championships will be held at Moorebank, so keep the last weekend of July next year free.

The 2017 season has been a challenging but good year for women's masters’ hockey at Ryde, with a record number of players participating. I look forward to next year being an even better one, with more participation and an appearance in the finals for more of the NWSHA teams. We had some challenges at times, but we also had a lot of fun. So please think about joining us if you were born by 31st December 1983. We know who you are! There are teams available for every skill level.

While many people have contributed this year, there are some people who need specific mention.

Thank you to Danielle and David Alexander for umpiring, your expertise was greatly appreciated. Thank you to Trudy for coaching the Blues team. For many people, coaching a Masters team is really a contradiction in terms - what can you do with a whole bunch of players who have been playing for years and already think they know everything! Well Trudy was different. She really took on the job with enthusiasm and put many hours of thought and preparation into it. This was really showcased at the state championships, where her leadership guided us through tough moments and decisions and her team emerged as the champions. Thank you so much Trudy and we look forward to you rejoining us on the field. Thanks also to Briony Green who was our unofficial assistant coach, helping out with all aspects of the team during the season.

A special thanks to Selina for all your hard work throughout the year. Selina not only managed the Blues team, she also took on a key role with administering the whole of the NWSHA masters group of eight teams. From registration, selections, uniforms, state championships and even end of year dinner and season review, that's a lot of work! We would never have been able to achieve what we did without all your hard work behind the scenes.

Thanks also to Cecilia, Mick Gunner and Andrew Ramsay for their help and advice on many different matters over the year and to Ryde President Glen for his support of women's masters’ hockey. To end, I have to repeat my favourite quote from Ina Candorin that I think really says it all about why we play Masters hockey. "It's not so bad getting old if you are all there to catch up with, and play good hockey".

Men’s Masters Report Firstly, thank you to the Mangers for all Grades:

A Grade: Mark Ellis

B Grade: Scott Familton

C Grade: Mark Richard

D Grade: Stephen Graham

A Grade: (Premier League) This was a rollercoaster year finishing 4th in the regular season and unfortunately losing the semi-final in a penalty shootout after scores were level at full time.

It's a credit to the team the effort displayed all year after some early setbacks and injuries. When able to field a full-strength team, we were capable of beating anyone.

There was a lot of new blood in the team this season which will hold us in good stead for the 2018 season and beyond. Congratulations to all in the team and many thanks to Mark Ellis, who kept things on track.

B Grade: (Sydney Cup) Grand Finalists unfortunately succumbing the Macarthur’s A grade side. Arguably one of the toughest years we’ve had in recent times however we pulled together as a team to post wins against some formidable opposition.

The finals series was probably a culmination of sheer willpower and determination to overcome the likes of GNS (A grade) and Sydney University, a team populated with a quality number of experienced players. Where there’s a will there’s a way……we enjoyed consistent attendance, a credit to all players. A huge shout out to Scott Familton for his organisational skills to get us all on the pitch each week, he has been an integral part of our success on and off the field.

C Grade: (Masters League) A strong season finishing second to UTS and then beating them 2-1 in the major semi-final then going on to finish take out the Premiership 3-0 over UTS.

The season’s success can be attributed to making sure we had fun, some new blood, consistent turn out and lack of injuries. Our focus was playing a short game and supporting each other. Everyone contributed to the team’s success even the goals were spread around more this year. The go to option has been the Clary Special from short corners as usual with a few others also getting in on the action.

D Grade: (Legends League) Of the 14 rounds, The Legends finished 6th overall out of 8 teams with 4 wins, 2 draws and 8 losses. We are looking forward to the new recruits from the higher grades to bolster our already strong numbers.

The Positives for 2017 A Grade (Premier League) were competitive on their day. This will only be enhanced by the

recruitment of the new O’35’s for next season and I truly look forward to this team taking the field next year, it will be one very strong side.

B Grade (Sydney League) with the influx of the new recruits to Premier League this will strengthen our teams across the park. This will give the remaining grades a strong base with which to select a competitive side.

Page 31: RYDE HUNTERS HILL DISTRICT HOCKEY CLUB INC.rydehockey.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/2017-RHHDHC...3 Ryde Hunters Hill District Hockey Club Inc. PAST PRESIDENTS PAST WOMENS PRESIDENTS

C Grade (Masters League) finishing the year with the Premiership just goes to show the strength already in this side.

D Grade (Legends League) remained competitive throughout the season. The Challenges ahead for 2018

A Grade recruitment drive, we must continue to draw from within own playing ranks. Have players committed to turning up each week, build camaraderie and carry the reserves necessary to field a competitive team. Have Ryde players dominate the Sydney Reps and NSW State teams.

B Grade, integrate the incoming players from A grade and remain a dominate force. C Grade, consolidate with new players coming from B grade and draw on this as contributor to

their ongoing dominate presence. D Grade, consolidate player roster and integration of C grade players.

In closing, I truly believe Ryde has an untapped wealth of experienced players within our Club and our recruitment drive needs to start here, giving our Ryde Hockey Family further playing opportunities. Our Club needs to see the Masters as a continuation of the weekend competition.

Ryde, has and needs to continue dominating in representative selection for Sydney at State Championships and in turn NSW with the Nationals, my goal is to grow our number of Ryde players at representative levels.

Team Reports – Women’s 1st Grade Women (ML1) What a season 2017 was for Ryde first grade women. Winning the maiden first grade premiership for the club will undoubtedly go down in history with the men’s first grade premiership win of 2015. Winning the 2017 SWHL ML1 premiership was no easy feat – you can ask just about anyone in our team (except TC), and I’m sure they will tell you that at some stages throughout our season, a premiership seemed all but impossible. We had many highs, and a few lows, but deep down everyone knew we were capable of greatness despite our inconsistencies.

Our team this season was full of future superstars. With five AHL players and a plethora of state players, representative duties often left our team depleted and in many games we relied upon the generosity of second grade to help us field 11 players. To emphasise this point, the first game we played in 2017 with our full first grade squad was the grand final. There is no way that we would have made it through the season if not for the help of many players, but a special mention to Shelly Pole, Sharon Coutts, Kylie Myers, and Kiera Batten.

I can without a doubt say that for many players in our team, having a coach as dedicated, knowledgeable and passionate as Tim Collier was a new and welcome experience. TC agreed to take on the role as women’s first grade coach for 2016 and 2017 only, giving us two seasons to win a premiership. At times I thought he was crazy, but his plan worked. TC is without a doubt the best coach I have ever had, and I know I’m not alone in saying that. But, TC wasn’t alone and certainly couldn’t have managed it (with his sanity intact) without the help of Gina Rees and Larry McIntosh. Really, with a coaching team like this, how could we not succeed! In case we haven’t said enough, thank you for all of your hard work and dedication.

By the end of the regular season, we had scored a total of 72 goals, second only to Gordon North Sydney. Finishing in third place with 33 points, we were a fair way behind Moorebank on 48 and GNS on 49 points and had a tough road ahead of us to make the grand final. But, they say finals are a different ball game and our plan all along was to ambush the ‘big’ teams in the finals – and ambush we did. The semi-final against Sydney University finished as a 2-2 draw, but after a spectacular show of one-on-ones and Zoe Newman showing her class in goals, we progressed to the preliminary final.

Here we took on Moorebank for a spot in the grand final. Having beaten us in both round games, I’m sure Moorebank were fairly confident going into this game and could already see themselves playing Gordon the following week. With only 10 minutes to go we were 1-2 down, but a classic tomahawk from the left circle edge by Abby Wilson equalled the scores at 2-2. With two minutes on the clock, Moorebank won a penalty corner. We held our breaths as it played out, but with some classy defensive work we turned things into a counter attack. Quick ball movement and fantastic team play paid off, with a last-minute goal to win 3-2.

It’s no secret that Gordon North Sydney were the hot favourites for premiers this year, having beaten us twice in the round games and finishing as minor premiers with only one loss under their belt. I had numerous people from a number of clubs tell me how surprised they were that we managed to beat Moorebank. No one thought we could beat Gordon. I’m sure by now everyone has seen the footage from our grand final, and if you haven’t, I encourage you to watch it. No one could ever have predicted things to go the way they did. I always knew we could win, but I expected it to be a tight score line, maybe 2-1 or 3-2. Instead, we slotted a goal in the first two minutes, followed by another three in quick succession. Gordon didn’t know what had hit them, and to be honest, I don’t think we quite believed it either. After 20 minutes it was 4-0. Gordon came out in the second half to score two goals, but we put the final nail in the coffin with a fifth goal. There it was, Ryde’s first SWHL ML1 premiership with a convincing win of 5-2.

Thank you on behalf of the entire team to everyone who came to support us throughout the season, but especially on grand final day. We don’t often get large crowds to our games, usually only supportive parents and boyfriends who have been dragged along. The atmosphere at Homebush that day was electrifying, and to see so many black and white supporters instilled some extra Ryde Pride in all of us which I believe helped to get us over the line.

2017 was an unbelievable season for us. It was hard, but it was all worth it to hold that trophy in the air. I know I’m not alone in wanting to see what 2018 has in store – perhaps another premiership!

Kiona Nicholl 1st Grade Captain

2nd Grade Women (ML2) With a new coach on board and a mixture of youth and 'experience' 2nd Grade women were a team full of potential and looked set for the season ahead. However, a number of injuries across the side, absentees due to travel, study and providing support to our 1st Grade girls saw the side rarely take the field at full strength, and facing some tough games against top teams in the competition. Despite only collecting four wins and two draws throughout the season, it was a credit to the girls that team morale stayed high. Everyone was extremely supportive of one another and also to those who stepped up to the challenge from 3rd Grade. Together we worked on both team and individual goals, providing encouragement to one another along the way. Enthusiasm and ‘Ryde Pride’ remained high till after the last game, making it an enjoyable season for all. Throughout the season the team worked hard at improving our structure and set plays and this was reflected in the development of our defensive structure becoming fluid and flexible, and of our attackers increasingly able to capitialise on more goal scoring opportunities. Metro League 2 is a quality competition and is always a challenging division for Ryde to compete in as we often play against other club’s 1st Grade teams, while also supporting our own 1st Grade girls in Premier League. Our final placing of 7th on the table was not reflective of the overall performance of the side. On a number of occasions, we were able to step up to the top teams, quite memorably narrowly losing 0-1 to UNSW who went on to convincingly win the grand final and also drawing to regular finalists, Sydney Uni. During the second half of the season we also improved our results against each team, from Round 1. Thank you must go to Ben Willson for stepping up to coach 2nd Grade women. It is always a challenge coaching a group of women, many who have played together for a number of years! We do appreciate you volunteering your time each week. Thank you also to Gina for running the side on a number of occasions and to Tim, Cecilia and Larry for your ongoing support. We had a total of 34 girls taking the field for 2nd Grade in 2017, so thank you also to all of the 3rd Graders who happily played up a number of weeks, often doubling up with their own games. Finally, congratulations to our well-deserved award winners: Kiera Batten: 2nd Grade Best & Fairest and team Leading Goal Scorer; and Shelly Pole: Women’s Club Best & Fairest Goal Keeper. Enjoy the off season and see you all back in the black & white in 2018. Jess Dobbin Player Manager

3rd Grade Women (ML3) The team started the year with a bang by winning the first three games and unexpectedly leading the competition. This was to prove a false dawn. We lost Ellie to 2s. Jess Cheun, Tess Herron and Tegan Lindsay for the season shortly after. The next nine weeks were tough with changes and girls doubling up and many of the younger girls coming to terms with the quality and speed of the opposition.

Training throughout the year was high in spirit and generally energetic. The players trained hard and numbers were consistently high. Much of the focus was on attack and working hard in defence, I.e. not to turn over the ball in bad areas.

It was a credit to all the girls that they worked hard in these areas throughout the year and got the results at the back end, where many of the goals they scored were of a high quality.

The team had two major goals for the season.

1. To finish out of relegation 2. To score more goals than previous year.

Both were ticked off and there is plenty to build on next year.

The highlights for the year were good results against GNS 3s, UNSW 2s and UTS 2s, and 1-2 loss against Premiers Sydney University where the girls won 2nd Half 1-0. This also coincided with the availability of Emily Manners, back to the team after holidays and cameos from Emily Hedditch, Tammy and Bec Liebson from 2s which added a bit of starch and polish to the team.

I’d like to congratulate Zoe McMillan on her SWHL award. She had a great season and improved like all the girls as the season went on.

I’d like to thank Captain Bec Dawson and manager Megan Starkey in making the season run smoothly and for being valuable sounding boards.

To Gina, Ben, Wally and Mick for their assistance when I wasn’t available, and of course Cecilia for all her organisation throughout the year for all the teams.

Dunny 3rd Grade Coach

4th Grade Women (ML4) This year’s mighty 4th grade team struggled to find their mojo and definitely gave Mick a few new grey hairs! We consistently gave the top teams a touch up or even beat them but failed to capitalise against teams we should have easily beaten. Congratulations to Charlotte Naylor who was the deserving winner of the best and fairest, her albatross-like reach, speed and skill made her a formidable opponent. It was a pleasure to play alongside such a talented, passionate and enthusiastic panther.

When all players were, available and had attended training to practice drills, beautiful hockey was delivered. Unfortunately, attendance at training was not always consistent with the exception of Luisa Basic who turned up week in week out, worked hard and then carried it over onto the pitch. Congratulation Luisa on your commitment and dedication.

The women of 4th grade spanned an age range of 30 years! Whilst this occasionally presented a challenge it is a wonderful system and opportunity to guide young players up through the ranks by “aged-to-perfection” older players. Both benefit from this system.

A special thanks to Mick Gunner who strapped the boots on for another year, he handled many last-minute changes like a pro and was always understanding and caring to all players and gave us a

Page 35: RYDE HUNTERS HILL DISTRICT HOCKEY CLUB INC.rydehockey.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/2017-RHHDHC...3 Ryde Hunters Hill District Hockey Club Inc. PAST PRESIDENTS PAST WOMENS PRESIDENTS

serve when we needed! Mick was ably assisted by wonder manager and player Meghan Baird who despite suffering a freak season ending injury kept the emails going and made sure there was a full team each Sunday, thanks Meg!

So, all in all a somewhat disappointing season for a very talented team. Perhaps this was the year we had to have to spurn us on to achieve the results we are definitely capable of. I choose to believe this and think 2018 will be the year of the mighty 4ths.

Marnee McKay 3rd Grade Captain

5th Grade Women (ML6) 2017 was a great season for our side as the team played for each other and gelled really well. By the end of the season the team was probably more like a bunch of friends playing hockey and this helped us to stay competitive when the chips were down, which was not that often at all. We really were the outstanding team in ML6. The amount of commitment that was seen this year by everyone really showed in our results and this is a credit to all. It made the team really enjoyable to coach as they were receptive to new ideas.

As a team we had some fun times such as when Laura suggested that I should purchase a drone to assist with recording our games, the threat that if the team won the Grand Final their coach would be have his legs waxed (what was I thinking, phew I got out of that one), the regular meal we had post game, the commentary on the game videos from the HABs (husbands and boyfriends) and such lines as robokate, hungry thirsty, and run forest run come to mind.

We didn’t have many lows this season; the only instance is when we lost several players, Caroline and Kara-Lee were both injured and left us with the possibility of not having a keeper in the Grand Final though Rosalie was brought into the team and did well. We also lost India to the US and Frog to the good old Aussie road trip to the FNQ.

The highlights of our season were that we secured the Minor Premiership and made the Grand Final. It was also every goal we scored, the wins we had, the fun we had as a team, and it was our supporters clapping us after our effort in the Grand Final. Another highlight was the weekly updates from Alex on our opposition and the regular interaction within the team.

The team made the Grand Final and played Mosman Harbourside. Unfortunately, we were not able to secure the win as we were understrength considering that we had lost three of our players to injury (Kara-Lee, Kate and Caroline) and Lucy to a road trip to FNQ with her dad. We had a realistic approach to that game and played it competitively and with sense of pride on what we had achieved so far, the minor premiership and the promotion to ML5.

Congratulations to Laura “ghost” Wilson on winning the Best and Fairest award, a well-deserved award. Thank you to Erin Kelly for the great job as our team manager, Trudy as assistant coach, who was responsible for our defensive record, and everyone who played for the team.

Personally, I learnt a lot from coaching our side this year especially from a defensive point of view. My main highlight is that every player developed their skills and made this side a memorable one. I would like to thank the team for allowing me to coach them this year.

6th Grade Women (SNWHA ‘C’ Division) I would like to start by thanking the player and the support team this year. Our sideline support helped the team to many victories and they were our secret weapon that other teams and umpires did not know how to combat You played well ‘side line play’ (I am sure some teams and umpires are still trying to understand the rule thank you - you know who you are). To Ben Warton, without your support and assistance with coaching the team at training this year we would not have made it to where we did - thank you. To all the players that helped out this year thank you.

At the commencement of preseason. we looked like we would have a great campaign, with the team now playing in a well-matched grade. After some hard preseason trials, we had a team of champions. We started the year off well - with only four games played we bettered our wins from last year and things were only improving. By half way through the season we were in the top four and finished the regular season in fourth position. Over the course of the season we had some very hard rough games from both players and umpiring (enough said). Then to the semi-final. This was a hard game with both teams playing very good hockey. It was one of the best games the team had played all year and there were a lot of great games played over the season. Yet after a well-played game the result did not go our way.

To the team I wish to thank you all for a great season. You have done yourself proud to finish with all the hard work and commitment. It was a pleasure to coach you this year but most of the success should go the team which was a well-bonded side that always sought to play well. Once again thank you for making my task easy.

A special mention for Kashia. This was your first year with the club and to take on the manager’s role was a big ask – so thank you. Likewise, to thank Rosalie for playing in goals this year - you were a great asset to the team and the club thanks you.

To the players listed below you never gave up even when we were losing or were injured and had no more energy you still played the best you could. This is the reason you did so well this year. Ben and I can only give guidance. You are the ones that did it all, so never doubt yourself whenever you play.

Rosalie Flokstra (GK), Michelle Giaquinto, Kashia Nowakowski, Nicky Warton, Celene Rana, Nat Cook

Shelley Tate, Toni Duckworth, Pippa Quilty, Selina Ellis, Marielle Sprangers

Leigh Pasfield (field), Katie Duncan, Alison Vinkovic, Melissa Armstrong, Prachi Redey.

As coach, all the hard work is done on the field by the players. Any success for a coach is that the team did the best they can and no matter the result, it’s a team result.

I must thank the committee for the year. Without your hard work we would not be able to field a team - thank you.

And to the coaching assistance, from Larry and Gina and Ben, the team thanks you and I thank you.

Hope to see you all next year to go the next step to greatness.

David Goosakoff 6th Grade Coach

7th Grade Women (SNWHA ‘D’ Division) The Ryde 7th grade women’s team was coached during the year by myself, with solid assistance from Gina Rees, Ben Wilson and Steve Dunn during the week training. Being the second year of coaching it was very pleasing to see the marked performance improvement with the team compared to last season.

There was a terrific blend of youth and experience within the team, with all players improving their skill levels as the season progressed. There were also some very positive traits shown by the team on the field. The ‘never give up’ attitude was at the cornerstone of being competitive during every game played through the year. This was also clearly evident with the courage displayed on the field, particularly with some of the ladies continuing to play on despite obtaining injuries.

There was not much difference between the teams that made the top four and Ryde 7s. We finished mid-field in the competition compared to being at the tail of the competition last year. These are encouraging signs for next season. With the rate of improvement in the team continuing, setting goals towards making the top four next year is within reach.

Strong attendance at training and eager participation in all the training drills contributed towards the improved performance. I would encourage the team to continue with this commitment next year as the rewards will be visible in the manner we play the game on the field.

Regards,

Mark Sookias 7th Grade Coach

Team Reports – Men’s 1st Grade Men (PL1) First and foremost, I would like to thank all the players and supporters for their support of the team and the club throughout the year.

First grade had another solid season in 2017 with significant promise but culminating in a disappointing exit in the finals. We started the 2017 campaign well with a trip to Brisbane for fine tuning and team bonding. It is fair to say we came away with great results. Preparation was the key, because we knew that the season would have a number of challenges. There would be seven weeks, at a minimum, where the team would be without key players though representative duties. Given this challenge, it was time for the young panthers to come of age and stand up to take the challenge; credit also to the more experienced hands who absorbed this additional responsibility and demonstrated great club loyalty in the process. Through this period, we were required to demonstrate that we had the required depth to still be a force in all grades with key players unavailable in first grade.

Congratulations to Nic McEwen for winning the team’s best and fairest and to Tim Brand for winning the Colin Manning award for the club’s highest goal scorer. Some acknowledgement is required of those payers who achieved prestigious representative honours throughout 2017: Kieron Arthur, Tim Brand, Tom Brown, Ben Craig, Tom Craig, Hayden Dillon, Sam Grey, Sam Liles, Nic McEwen, and Lachie Sharp. Well done gentlemen, great results after all the hard work. Our best wishes also to Sam Liles on his overseas stint in Belgium and beyond.

I would like to thank Richard Sharp once again his guidance and his passion for the players the team and club. You are truly the driving force behind the team. Thank you Reg! David Moore - what can I say - your devotion to and support of the team and players is the secret weapon we have and other clubs and teams don’t. Your analysis of match day videos for the players and coach are a valuable part of the team’s success. Billy Shaw, your unavailability next year due to moving to Queensland will be a hard to replace. All the best in your new adventuress (Dave Moore is considering a comeback next year so we could have a replacement already!).

In closing I would like to thank all the players that took part in first grade this year. It is due to your support that we are one of the leading club teams in Australia. As has been the case in last two years, Ryde established itself as one of the top teams in the competition with consistently high performances against traditional contenders for the premiership. There was some scintillating hockey, with the team’s ball movement and goal scoring to the fore. Taking the next step is our challenge and I call on you to support this objective. It is both challenging and exciting and a great thing to rally around.

Looking forward to seeing you all next year.

Yours in hockey

To say as much as things change they stay the same is correct in 2017 for second grade. Another year where the team performed admirably during the 22 rounds of the competition to finish in second position only to lose the major semi-final and then the final to bow out in the same fashion as 2016.

The season started in fine style with big wins against Easts and Gordon showing that the work the team had put in during pre-season was going to set them up for a successful year. As the year unfolded the team was able to win sixteen, lose four and draw two games to finish just behind UNSW in second spot. Beating the eventual premiers UNSW twice during the season showed the talent, skill and commitment that this team possessed.

The team was able to unearth some fine young talent throughout the year and we look forward to these young athletes pushing hard for first grade in 2018. Throughout the season we relied on many players from third grade and their work ethic and commitment was an asset to the team. Whenever an athlete from first grade was asked to help out it was obvious why they were in first grade! Many thanks to all players who took the field this year.

A huge thankyou to Gary Goosakoff for his managerial expertise again this season. The help and encouragement from Club Management is always appreciated. The support that the leadership group provided to me and to the team in general was phenomenal. Personally, I would like to thank Sharpie, Larry and TC for helping with training, tactics and being available to bounce ideas off throughout the year.

Let’s hope that in 2018 second grade continues to develop and evolve striving to be the best athletes and group of men in the competition.

Macka 2nd Grade Coach

3rd Grade Men (PL3) 3rd grade this year was again coached by Dean Merchant. It was a mixed season for 3rd. The first half of the year was largely unsuccessful but the team was able to turn their season around. Ultimately the team finished fourth bowing out 3-4 in the preliminary final, in extra time.

As noted the first half of the season was characterised by inconsistency in performance and a failure to string wins together. Near the halfway point the tea has recorded two draws and three wins to be placed last on the table. In the second half of the season the team was able to realise their potential and demonstrate greater consistency and cohesion. Subsequently they rose up the table to be placed 4th. With this turn around came 8 wins and including the final series the team recorded an eight game winning streak.

The squad had to support 2nd grade which had a lot of injuries this year. At times we struggled but were able to band together and really gelled when it was necessary. With the loss of our captain Al Retford to 2nd grade for almost the whole season, Micheal English took on the role. This saw him step up to the challenge and lead the team in the right direction. This did not go unnoticed by the team which is why he deservedly won best and fairest this year.

I have been coaching 3rd grade now for three season. Each year this team is getting one step closer to winning the premiership. I believe with fresh ideas and the right enthusiasm and commitment the team can finally get the premiership they deserve.

4th Grade Men (PL4) Result - Runners Up

Prelim Rounds - 3rd (15 wins/7 draws/2 losses/76 goals for – 33 against)

2017 was another fantastic season for Ryde Men’s 4th Grade

It’s the 3rd year in a row the team has made the Grand Final! Unfortunately, we weren’t able to win, but it’s a great result nonetheless.

The team only lost three games all season, including the GF. We competed hard in every game, but seven draws perhaps is a good indication, of a new team trying to find its groove. Also evident was a little bit of inconsistency.

There were some tough games throughout the season, but the team showed great resilience, coming from behind on a few occasions, to grab a draw or the win. Even losing players through injury, unavailability or promotion, the team was still able to perform at a good level and compete every week.

It was a very rewarding year for everyone involved, with a great mix of youth and experience a major contributor to that. There were lots of talented juniors in the side, together with more experienced players, which really injected some enthusiasm into the group! All players should be proud of their achievements this year, despite us not being able to get over the line in the Grand Final.

Thanks also to all those players who contributed from other teams. Your help throughout the season was very much appreciated.

4s has always been a development team. Seasoned players, helping to usher our young up and coming stars, into premier league. This year was no different. I sincerely hope we continue with this in all premier league teams into the future.

Special thanks to Owen Crotty, who helped manage the team with myself this year, and coaching in my absence.

Regards, Greg Findley 3rd Grade Captain

5th Grade Men (SL1) At the beginning of the 2017 season it was decreed that this season was to be the "year of redemption" for our 5th Grade team having cruelly lost the 2016 grand final in the "one on one" playoff as 80 minutes of hockey failed to gain a decisive result. Playing again in the Sydney League 1 competition after 16 round games we finished as minor premiers with 11 wins, 3 losses and 2 draws in what was a hard fought competition. With a tally of 55 goals we led the goal scoring and with only 20 goals against, we also had the best defensive record finishing some 15 goals ahead of the next nearest team on goal difference. Not only was this a great team effort but also a reflection of the health of our club as we consistently fielded vastly different teams week on week. Thanks to all the players who supported the higher grades when needed and those that either came up the grades or backed up to ensure we could get a team on the field every week. The highlight of the season was no doubt our 2nd Round top of the table clash with UTS which ultimately secured us the minor premiership. On a cold Saturday night out at Moorebank, we could only field 11 players with 4 already backing up from games earlier in the day. Trailing 1 - 0 at half time

we knew we were in trouble against a team that was fielding savvy experience blended with a few junior Pakistan internationals with skills and speed. After a much needed rest the start of the 2nd half saw us draw level courtesy of a rare Steve Besanvalle goal, who almost fainted with excitement. As the battle intensified the effect of earlier games saw us suffer two calf injuries and cramping among several players - at one time being down to nine on the field. We defended countless attack and finally managed to break away with Jimmy Lear (calf injury) hobbling up field to find an equally immobile Brett Tapson camped on the top of the circle. Tappy calmly trapped, turned and slotted the ball past the keeper to see us take an ultimate a 2-1 winning lead. Unfortunately, the stuff dreams are made of and redemption were shattered as we entered the finals series. With seconds to go UTS scored to gain first entry to the grand final. To be fair we should have won the game, unfortunately missing a penalty stroke. The following week we faced Briars in what no doubt was the toughest and highest quality game of hockey we played all year. Each time Briars took the lead we fought back to draw level until at the end of regular time we were locked at 3-3. Down to 9 v 9 in extra time we dominated the first five minutes and even a draw would see us through the grand final. 2017 however was not ultimately be the year of redemption as a penalty corner conversion by Briars ended our season prematurely. Congratulations to the 5th Grade team for what was a very successful and enjoyable season with great camaraderie and banter. Unfortunately, we didn't quite get the result we set out to achieve but the journey along the way was exceptional. Finally, congratulations to our goal keeper Steven Ford who deservingly took out our 5th Grade Best and Fairest. Mark Grieves 5th grade captain

6th Grade Men (SL2) Result - Premiers

Where to start ... well the team obviously, this year’s team was a mixture of older more experienced old farts, tainted with the sprinkling of youthful exuberance and inexperience that came together hoping to replicate the success from 2016 ... And we did.

Our statistics for the season:

We played 21 games. Of that we won 15, lost 3, and drew 3 including a total of 75 GF, 32 GA. This was the best for & against record for the SL2 grade which saw us winning the minor premiership and continuing the good form to win the major prize, the Sydney Hockey Association (SL2) Premiership for 2017.

I would like to individually acknowledge the team for the 2017 season, starting with Tim Metcalf, Scott Familton, Andrew Ramsey, Stuart Farquharson, Stephen Burns, John Cullen, Craig Rathbone, Jarrad Taylor, Rob Whelan, Amauri Amat, Mark Eggers, Kerry Marthick, Matt Edwards (on loan from 5th grade), Alex Kennedy, Luca Burman, Ben Beattie and Scott Morrison.

We had solid numbers turn up every week for training. It was intense and purposeful we accomplished good team harmony and fun while learning something new at the sessions and this was reflected in our results on the weekend. However, I feel our attacking short corners could be improved.

The team bonded well as the season progressed. We battled hard against the bigger and more physical sides and as usual they would target the younger guys on the team trying to intimidate them. Much to their credit the younger guys took on the challenge and stepped up. I was suitably impressed with their attitude and their willingness to get in there a have a go.

There were always the ever-vigilant mentors supporting their younger team mates. It was comforting to see whenever the younger boys were troubled there were always two or more experienced team mates around to guide and help out.

In closing I would like to send a huge shout out to Scott “Kiwi’ Familton and Amauri “Muz” Amat who assisted with all the behind the scenes organising of the team. It made my job a lot easier on game day. It was a pleasure to be part of this wonderful team, I would like to wish all the younger athletes great success for their future with Ryde and leave you with a quote by a famous baseball player named Babe Ruth,” it’s hard to beat someone who never gives up”.

Enjoy the off season for the ones who need to rest, namely yours truly. I look forward to seeing you all around a hockey pitch soon.

Regards,

Scotty 6th grade captain

7th Grade Men (SL3) I am told that Hockey is a team game and in 2017 the 18, yes 18 players who formed the Ryde 7th Grade for most of the season were that. The rules said that only 16 can be listed on the match card which worked out well during the season as 2 somebodies were away every week until the finals, when …………… everybody was available.

The season started with the usual collection of returnees (1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, & 16) and new chums (4, 8, 15) and couple of players pressed ganged in roles (2, 5) and you have …………GRAND FINALISTS.

It finished up being a very good season and an almost great one – if only that ball curved a little more past the keeper in the last minute! Funny things can happen in extra time!

Special mention for player 16 – he agreed to miss the Grand Final to help with the team balance.

Sydney Hockey’s grading of teams made the SL3 competition an interesting one with a couple of clubs fielding their 1st and 3rd grade teams a few 4th and 5th and Ryde’s trusty 7s.

Early games showed that there was a wide range in opposition team ability and we needed extra fire power up front, extra intelligence in the middle, speed up front and plenty of hard work in the mid -field which all arrived thanks to a happy combination too many players in the higher grades (3, 9, 14) and a new player to the club (17)!

Our 18th player (18) arrived half way through the season and had to play all remaining games to qualify for the semis – which he just did!

So, who were those travellers in hockey, who after five rounds were coming 6th, after 10 rounds 3rd and 15 rounds still 3rd and after a dramatic last round finished the season in 2nd place thanks to a better goal difference.

Player 17 proved to be our highest goal scorer with 11, edging our old hands 5 and 6, and player 17 also proved to be our Best and Fairest for the season, and to be fair he won’t be in 7ths next year, but every team needs help in getting to the Grand Final!!

So, who were these players, well, read on:

Player 1 Mark Studd Player 2 Ken Campbell Player 3 Glen Castensen Player 4 Gursewak Singh

Thanks to everybody else who helped out along the way, subbing, umpiring, scoring the odd goal. See you all back in 2018 for another red hot go!

8th Grade Men (SL4) Placing – Preliminary Finalist

2017 promised to be a good year with a new team coming together for the first time that comprised a mix of experience and youth. The commitment shown by this team in attending training sessions regularly each Thursday was transferred to the weekend roster matches where they became a very cohesive and supportive group.

There were many memorable moments throughout the year where the team excelled and showed what it was capable of. Three games stand out all in the second round –

After hitting a flat spot against St George and scrambling to an ordinary win, the services of Larry McIntosh were sought and he provided the team with an insightful and instructive whiteboard session instead of turf time. The inspiration taken away from that session carried over to the 5PM game against UTS at Moorebank in a 3 v 4 showdown. The new-found confidence and self-belief did not waiver for the full 70 minutes and we came away with superbly executed 5 – 1 victory.

The acid test was to be the next game when we confronted Briars at Cintra. The grit and determination of this team was fully tested. Recovering from an early goal against we fought back to win 2 -1 against the second placed team.

The third one was the Minor Semi Final where we despatched UTS comfortably again with some solid team play. Notably this was about the time when the flu bug struck and many players had to soldier on regardless.

This team performed consistently throughout the season winning the majority of roster games. Wins in most cases were hard fought but the versatility and keenness of all players made the coaches job easy. We started the season with a squad of 16 squad players and for most weeks had either a full team, 16 players, or close to it. Having a team showing this sort of spirit is always going to do well.

It is difficult to make any special mentions when the team is comprised of so many good players. Nevertheless, I would like to acknowledge the assistance of Dean Merchant and Mark Richard in assisting with getting the playing structure right. On the field they also provided inspiration and encouragement by leading through example. Well done and thank you.

It is not often that you have the luxury of four willing and capable inside forwards who worked tireless all year to provide the cohesion between defence and attack. Well done Tim Atkinson, Kevin Li, Sam Baxter and Jarryd Drinkwater.

Strikers Jason Beeton, Thomas Bretell and Deano all contributed well to the score line and each brought variety to the attacked.

The midfield and defence in general were acquitted themselves very well and were ably lead by Mark Richards. Maintaining structure and learning how to press competently was the big area of improvement for 2017. Good job Duncan Taylor, Tucker Armstrong, Chris Richard, Stu Russell and Mark Sookias

Unfortunately, our winning run came to an end in the Preliminary Final where it was a repeat of last year where we came up against a strong Briars side who were rebounding from a semi-final loss to Macquarie University losing 3-0 on that occasion.

The best and fairest this year saw a worthy result with Mark Richard taking the honours followed by Duncan Taylor and Kevin Li.

The optimism that was taken away from this season by this group of players surely will see more success come their way if the intention to play together again in 2018 is realised

I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this great result.

Robert Thompson 8th Grade Coach / Manager

9th Grade Men (SL5) Result –Minor Premiers - Runners up

2017 proved to be an interesting year as we consistently utilised players from other grades to make up the side due to players representing their country (Dasher and Sniper) as well as illness and injury. Consequently, it proved difficult to develop team structure as the team from week to week varied significantly.

With this in mind the team performed consistently well throughout the regular season winning twelve matches and drawing three.

Our only loss for the year was in the grand final which was against Sydney University. The match was very tight and went down to 1 v1. Our GK, Jacob, did a fantastic job keeping us in the match but unfortunately experience beat him in the end. The final score for the match after two periods ox extra time was 1 all.

During the finals we utilised members from 10th grade due to players being unavailable because of injuries and work. I wish to thank those players for also making themselves available throughout the season as in one match, without them, we would have had to forfeit.

A huge thank you needs to go to Steve Riley who managed the team whilst I was overseas with the Australian Side. The best and fairest this year saw a worthy result with Steve Reilly taking out the honour.

I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this great result.

10th Grade Men (SL6) Result - 5th

The 2017 season was always going to be a season of rebuilding as we mostly had a new team with a mixture of new players, who were inexperienced at that point, or had only played one season. We unfortunately didn’t have a centre half and as a result we tended to struggle with ball movement and develop a good playing structure.

As the year progressed, the team started to gel and build our confidence as we ended the season with some great wins by winning our last 4 games and missing out on the finals by only 5 points. Our early season form cost us in the end, though they came too late and we didn’t make the finals. Based on our late season performances we would have definitely had a great chance of winning the premiership.

This improvement in our performance occurred with the improvements in the general skill levels (notable improvements were Roger and Scott) and the welcoming of Ryleigh. Further improvements occurred when Gav introduced a defensive press, which enabled us to stifle our opposition’s 16 and free hit options. I think that if we focus on improving this next season it will be beneficial. Grade games are won through applying defensive pressure and converting short corners and other scoring opportunities.

We had the opportunity to develop a new keeper, Jacob Brown. This was Jacob’s first season in goals as he is normally plays in the midfield in juniors. There was a definite improvement in his skills and his confidence grew in every game making some amazing saves. Jacob has a bright future in goals and he should focus on this in the future. He had the opportunity to keep in the 9th grade Grand Final and his performance was really impressive. Even though the team lost he will learn a lot from this experience. A shout out to the other lower grade keepers (Andy, Tiny and Studdy) on assisting Jacob, he definitely became part of the keeping cartel. On behalf of Ryde 10th grade I’d like to congratulate Jacob on winning the 2017 Best & Fairest award; it was well deserved.

There were some memorable moments in the season including when Gav decided to take Jacob off the field when we needed to win a game against Wests. Unfortunately, this substitution was made at the wrong time. Another highlight was when the team beat Macquarie University 4-1, winning our last 4 games, and also the way the new guys developed. There was some lowlights and lessons learnt from them.

I think the introduction of some aspects of the junior training program and a focus on the basics would benefit the new players.

I would like to thank the team for the amazing effort all season and would love to see everyone back next year. Also I would like to thanks Gav Hughes for his help managing and coaching the squad.
