From the Editor

… the world’s favourite airline! A er fi ve

years and 60 incredible issues of our award-

winning publication in its previous format,

we felt it was time for something even be er

– the ultimate travel guide if you like. So

here we are with a new name, Let’s Go with

Ryanair, and a new size that can fi t in your

pocket. It’s packed with all the information

you need about must-visit destinations in Europe and beyond.

“There are no facts, only interpretations,” said Nietzsche,

and that’s true when it comes to travel. As you’ll see in the

following pages, Let’s Go with Ryanair is all about you and your

views on what to do and what to see out there – your opinions on

places you’ve been to and the place where you live. We are merely

the medium. I have a feeling you’ll love it.

This April, you’re talking about some brand new bars,

restaurants and hotels from Paris to Paphos. And buzzing about

mountain biking in the Dolomites and even a scarecrow beauty

contest (see page 32). Comedian Danny Robins visits Dublin

following your Twi er suggestions, and I travel to Rome for

our cover story, a tip-packed city guide, to drink with bar owner

Rodrigo de Maio and eat with pizza maestro Gabriele Bonci.

Still, to paraphrase an old Chinese proverb, don’t listen to

what we say, book a fl ight now and go see! Then let us know all

about it on twi er.com/helloletsgo; facebook.com/letsgo-mag and

via email at [email protected]. See our website at letsgo-mag.com for more. We can’t wait to hear from you.

LORENZO PESCE “Rome is home! I love riding to Gianicolo hill on my scooter to look down at the city,” says photographer Lorenzo, who documents his city for us in our cover story starting on page 51. Lorenzo, who lives with his wife and two daughters when he’s not travelling on shoots, has been published across the globe in the likes of The Face, The Economist and Time. See more of his work at lorenzopesce.com.

ANA ZARAGOZAMadrid native Ana, has worked for Harper’s Bazaar Spain and Ge y, and shoots ‘secret’ Madrid for us starting on page 69. “For one of the shots in this feature I asked some strangers if I could take pictures from their balcony,” she says. “Not only did they let me, but they also invited me for lunch. We cha ed and played records until it got dark. People in this city are wonderful.” For more of Ana’s pics see anazaragozagarcia.com.

MATT HERRING London-based illustrator Ma is a sporty sort who, when he’s not creating eye-catching art work, loves nothing be er than ge ing on a plane to a wintery location and bombing down some slopes on his snowboard. “I use a montage of found and self-generated graphic material,” he explains of his illustrations, which include the cover of this fi rst issue of Let’s Go with Ryanair. WHEN IT’S BEEN going for around

700 years, you know a market must

be doing something right. It’s said that

the name Vucciria derives from a local

dialect word for “voices” or “hubbub”.

Like all the best markets, historically this

place was at the heart of city social life.

Vucciria remains a must-visit if you like

AN UNSPOKEN RULE of Hollywood

movies – right up there with never say

“goodbye” on the telephone and always

enter a scary basement alone – is that sexy

cowboys, explorers and wise indigenous

peoples can all navigate by the stars. They

glance skyward, make a quick mental

calculation and then bark “This way!”.

Wouldn’t it be cool to be able to do that?

To emulate such at-one-with-nature

majesty, all you actually have to know is

how to locate the North Star – also known

as the Pole Star or Polaris. Unlike most

stars, which appear to wander the night

skies like forgetful fi refl ies, Polaris holds

its position very well, and on a clear night

and with a li le know-how, it’s easy to spot.

To fi nd Polaris, “fi rst fi nd the

Big Dipper”, says desert adventurer

and explorer Ripley Davenport

(ripleydavenport.com). It’s also known as

The Plough. You’re looking for the bowl at

the opposite end to its long, straight handle.

“You need the two stars on its outer edge.

Draw an imaginary line through these

two stars towards the Li le Dipper.” He’s

talking, of course, about Ursa Minor, a

neighbouring constellation that looks like

Big Dipper, only smaller. Your line should

lead straight to the tip of Li le Dipper, its

handle. “The brightest star on the handle is

the North Star,” says Ripley. “From this you

can now gauge west, east and south.” You

might want to check with a compass at fi rst.

Ready to show off your celestial

navigation skills? Ideally you’ll be under

the clear, starry skies of somewhere terribly

exciting like Fez, Morocco, looking for your

riad. And ideally with an impressionable

audience. Look for the tell-tale Big and

Li le Dippers to orient yourself. Now raise

your arm, shout “This way!” and pray like

mad that you’re right.

Right now

When I gave an online shout-out to ask what I should get up to during a weekend in the Irish capital, I couldn’t help but detect a slightly macabre theme emerging, with plenty of references to death featuring in your tips. But, hey, I’m game. If “dead” Dublin is where it’s at, then let’s go…

“Go to the Dead Zoo. It is truly awesome.”

@MarkNicholson, via Twi erIf you ever see a man crossing Dublin in a

taxi full of stuff ed animals, that will be Nigel

Monaghan. Nigel is in charge of the city’s

Natural History museum, be er known to all

Dubliners by its brilliant nickname, the “Dead

Zoo”. I visit and fi nd that highlights include a

whale hanging from the ceiling, a giraff e, and

a tiger shot by King George V (in a time when

shooting tigers was, unfortunately, considered

heroic). In Victorian times, when the museum

opened, taxidermy was all the rage.

“Back then,” says Nigel, “every family would

have had a squirrel in a box.” These days our tastes

are more Banksy prints than glass cases full of

badgers, so how come this place is still so popular?

“It’s a nostalgia trip,” says Nigel. In some cases quite

literally. Apparently, some elderly visitors

come because they remember seeing this same

museum collection as children. The Dead Zoo is

almost a museum of a museum because so li le has

changed here over the past 100 years. “There’s only

one interactive exhibit,” Nigel explains, “and that’s a

vibrating frog. He’s been vibrating since 1912.” Mark

on Twi er: you’re right: this place is awesome.

“Have a drink in the Gravediggers Pub”

@petevelluet, via Twi er A er being stared at by all those glass eyes, I’m

feeling in need of a drink. So, as suggested above by

someone called Pete, I head to Kavanagh’s. It’s also

known as “the Gravediggers”, due to the fact that

it shares a wall with Glasnevin Cemetery, the last

resting place of Irish heroes such as Michael Collins,

Brendan Behan and Éamon de Valera.

Eugene Kavanagh, the landlord, is the sort

of Irish pub philosopher who’d make American

tourists go weak at the knees. He comes out with

nuggets like “I’m qualifi ed in nothing and I’m an

authority on everything” and “My wife has six

children. She tells me they’re all mine. I’ll be thrilled

if it’s true.” When I ask him if he can spare 10 minutes

for a chat, he says he can do “nine and a half”, and

two hours later we’re still talking. Eugene treats the

serving of Guinness as an art form yet has never

touched a drop (“If I drank I’d be dead or in jail”),

says he has run 170 marathons (the most recent

three years ago aged 70), and the pub has been in his

family for six generations. As he puts it: “A pub is the

best environment to rear a family because they see

the good in drink and the bad in people who drink.”

His parting shot to me is: “And I bet you’ve never

tasted a pint be er than that.” He’s right, I haven’t.

“There’s a church with a crazy crypt somewhere

that has preserved dead folk in it. One of them is a

giant – you can stroke his hand for good luck!”

Holly Atkinson, via FacebookHolly, it’s a weird tip, but you’re right. St Michan’s

is the church in question, where Peter Condell – a

strong contender for most brilliantly eccentric

tour guide ever, takes me down to see the bodies

that, through some unique combination of

temperature, dryness and methane gas have turned

into mummies. There’s a 400-year-old nun (you

can still see her toenails), but pride of place is an

extremely tall 650-year-old Crusader. Oddly, he has

one incredibly long fi nger, a bit like ET, that you

can indeed stroke. I can’t believe that in these days

of glass cases and security alarms, we’re actually

allowed to touch. “Oh, we’re mad over here,” Peter

says. “You’re in Ireland now.”

I stayed at the friendly and comfortable Brooks Hotel, near the shops of Gra on Street and the nightlife of Temple Bar, and round the corner from the very cool Wicklow Street (check out the Secret Book & Record Store and Freebird Records). brookshotel.ie

“My favourite neighbourhood is Le Marais. It’s where I have lived for the six years since I moved here, and off ers much of what I love about Paris all packed into one area. There are excellent fashion boutiques and some great small museums. Musée Carnavalet (23 Rue de Sévigné, tel. +33 (0)1 4459 5858, carnavalet.paris.fr), for example, is a city history museum, and Cognacq-Jay (8 Rue Elzévir) is a collection of 18th-century art and furniture. And of course there are fantastic food shops and markets.

MY CITY PARIS Paris blogger and tour guide Richard Nahem, of eyepreferparis.com,

on the places he loves in his adopted home town

“I like to food shop at the Richard Lenoir market, off Place de la Bastille (Avenue Richard Lenoir), which is open on Thursdays and Sundays. It’s the largest outdoor food market in Paris, with hundreds of vendors selling fresh produce, and any French food speciality you can think of. I always buy sea salt here. The guy selling

it is a real character; he calls himself the

‘George Clooney of salt’, whatever that means! He has a fantastic variety that he mixes with fl avours like red wine, seaweed and cinnamon.”

“The Place des Vosges is the oldest square in Paris – built in 1605 – and I think it’s the most beautiful. It’s surounded by fi ve-storey limestone mansions, small contemporary galleries and smart restaurants. There are covered walkways with vaulted ceilings, and in the middle of it all is the Louis XIII park, with its trees, fountains and manicured lawn.”

“There’s a great restaurant called Chez Janou (2 Rue Roger Verlomme, tel. +33 (0)1 4272 2841, chezjanou.com) that looks modest but serves excellent Provençale cuisine. I order the chocolate mousse for dessert. They bring a huge bowl of it over to your table and you just scoop out however much you want.”

EVERY YEAR YOU DON’T VISIT THE ETERNAL CITY is an opportunity missed. The beauty, grandeur and history of the place is so magnifi cent to behold that before long you’ll fi nd yourself asking “Why don’t I live here?” Walk for hours, jump on and off trams, pop in and out of art galleries, ba le faux gladiators at the Colosseum, munch bucatini all’amatriciana (pasta with pork cheek, tomato and pecorino), and sip aperitivos by the Tiber. It never, ever gets boring.

Rome is culturally overwhelming, not just for its ruins and ancient churches, but for its thriving contemporary scene of art, nightlife, architecture and cuisine. All around you, there’s a stimulating contrast between the traditional and new.

Rules of engagement are simple. Take it easy, there’s so much to see that if you try to keep to a schedule you may fi nd yourself losing your cool. Rome is one of those places that will show you what it wants when it

wants, so relax and let the day unfold as it will. Get yourself a Roma Pass, a multi-entrance card costing €30, valid for three days and giving free entrance to any two sights, reduced entry to many others and free public transport (romapass.it). It makes such a diff erence.

Have long lunches, strike up conversations and hang out amid the sculptures of Piazza Navona or on the Spanish Steps, eating gelato and people watching. Or fi nd somewhere quieter and more contemplative like the Protestant Cemetery, fi lled with cats and the dead famous – John Keats, William Story and Antonio Gramsci.

When in search of some retail therapy, make a beeline for original boutiques over the chain stores – Rome has hundreds to choose from. A good example is Spazio If, an art gallery and fashion and home store in one. But the biggest collection of boutiques is on the winding cobbled Via del Governo Vecchio, perfect for a spot of window shopping.

01 EAT GELATO AT SAN CRISPINO

I’ll brook no argument on this one. The

best ice cream in town is to be found at

this counter-service joint in an alley behind

the Trevi Fountain. No emulsifiers, all

natural ingredients, and the flagship honey

-flavoured gelato is just incredible.

02 SEE THE SISTINE CHAPEL If there’s one must-see during a weekend break in Rome

with so much going on and so little time, it remains the Cappella Sistina. The world’s

most famous frescoes cover the interior, with the ceiling works by Michelangelo the

centrepiece. Heart-stopping.

04 WALK THE STREETS OF TRASTEVERE BY NIGHT The narrow,

cobbled streets of this picturesque neighbourhood on the Tiber’s

west bank are as romantic as Rome gets. Wait till sundown, then

amble through them, stopping off at a buzzing terrace bar for an

aperitivo and a kiss from your loved one under the stars.

03 VISIT THE MAXXI All bending oblong tubes, intersecting and

overlapping, this Zaha Hadid-designed building is a fitting home

for the National Museum of 21st-Century Art. It’s divided into art

and architecture spaces, and hosts world-class shows.

05 BUY A HAT FROM

FRATELLI VIGANÒ

Piazza della Rotonda

ROME IS ONE OF THE MOST culturally rich cities in the world, boasting 2,800 years of history. With so much to see, make sure you throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain to ensure that return visit.

Ancient sites are everywhere but the majority of remains lie between the Palatine, Capitoline, Esquiline and Quirinal hills. Here you’ll fi nd the Roman Forum, Colosseum and the Palatine itself, from where Rome was founded.

When the city heats up, head inside to admire the paintings of Caravaggio and Titian in the 06 Borghese Gallery, classical art in 07 Palazzo Massimo, or the contemporary art and architecture of new institution MAXXI (see previous page).

Another welcome addition to the city’s 21st-century cultural scene is 08 MACRO, a contemporary arts venue that occupies a former Peroni beer plant in the north-east of the city. There’s a second outpost, 09

MACRO Testaccio, to the south too –

don’t miss photographer Steve McCurry’s retrospective showing there until 29 April.

The Renzo Piano-designed 10 Auditorium Parco della Musica was opened in 2002. It boasts three performance halls resembling huge beetles, built around an outdoor amphitheatre. Enjoy a show, experience the exceptional acoustics, and fi nish with a drink at trendy bar-restaurant ReD.

There are more churches than pizzerias in the Eternal City – and one you should really try to see is the 400-year-old “church of illusions”, 11 Sant’Ignazio. If you stand on a disk set into the fl oor and look up at Andrea Pozzo’s trompe l’oeil ceiling fresco, the artist’s foreshortening creates a realistic illusion of Saint Ignatius fl ying to paradise.

Of course you have to see 12 the Pantheon. Built in around 120AD, Emperor Hadrian’s temple stands as a testament to Roman skill and ingenuity. To this day, no one quite knows how the concrete dome, 43m wide, with light streaming in from the central oculus, stays up.

Spotlight on Rome

JUST AS IT’S HARD TO FIND a bad bowl of pasta in Rome, you’re highly unlikely to suff er a poor night’s sleep here either. One of the most visited cities on Earth, it boasts stylish boutique accommodation, pure luxury options for those who want to splash out, and a wide variety of cheap, clean B&Bs. The one rule of thumb is to book early – this city is always packed.

For a bit of classic Italian style, the 13

Hotel Quirinale (doubles from €139) can be found on Via Nazionale, not far from the Termini railway and bus station (where you’ll arrive from Ciampino airport). It’s gorgeous, all marble interiors, smart wood panelling and impeccable service. There’s a delightful courtyard garden for sunny morning breakfasts too – a real bonus in the heart of the city.

For cool looks, try Design Hotels member 14 Leon’s Place (doubles from €200), just north of Termini and a short walk from sights like the Trevi Fountain.

This 19th-century palazzo, and one-time disco, feels more Studio 54 than Roman villa. The 56 rooms are smart and sexy, with large mirrors and a black, white and pearl-grey colour scheme.

Smaller, cheaper, and in a great location near Piazza Navona is the 15 Relais Palazzo Taverna (doubles from €180). With just 11 rooms and a modernist take on 1960s decor, it’s a friendly city retreat.

The Trastevere neighbourhood may be further away from the centre, but its ancient streets and abundance of unpretentious local restaurants make it an a ractive option. At 16 Guesthouse Arco de’ Tolomei (doubles from €200) there’s a real old family feel. The medieval palazzo is made up of a mere six rooms, fi lled with antiques and elegant furnishings. For a more monastic se ing, the 17 Hotel Santa Maria (doubles from €230) is set around a 16th-century cloister. The bright and cheery rooms look out onto a courtyard bordered with orange trees, bringing an Italian countryside feel to the city.

ROME IS ABOUT EATING and taking your time over it, so it’s worth seeking out places off the beaten track. Don’t go international – if you have only a few days in the Eternal City, why go off -topic? Eat Italian and drink Italian (good wine lists abound). It’s that simple.

18 Salumeria Roscioli is an historic family run bakery and enoteca near Campo de’ Fiori, which has a food counter at the front packed with fresh ingredients. Order some fl atbread pizza bianca as a snack on your way in, and wine al bicchiere (by the glass), before strolling through to the tables at the back and choosing from the main menu. Try the Sicilian fusilli with swordfi sh, aubergines and cherry tomatoes or, in season, the white truffl e menu.

Also family run, 19 La Tavernaccia is in the Monteverde neighbourhood, and as local as you can get. Traditional fare like home-cooked lasagna, seasonal vegetables, pasta and grilled meat and fi sh are all

served up at fair prices, meaning you will be happily stuff ed.

For perfect pizza, there is Gabriele Bonci’s 20 Pizzarium – a legend since 2003 – where Rome’s maestro of dough sells incredible four-sided, stone-milled organic fl our pizzas, with toppings from classic tomato sauce to rabbit. Don’t miss his “supplì” either – delicious li le fried rice balls with fi llings.

More upmarket in the centro storico is 21 Fortunato del Pantheon, a roomy joint serving traditional Italian cuisine, popular with the political class. Opt for the daily chef’s specials, particularly those with fresh fi sh, or something uncomplicated like the spicy penne all’arrabbiata.

For something relaxed and romantic, try 22 Roma Sparita, with its tables set outside on gorgeous Piazza di Santa Cecilia in our favourite neighbourhood, Trastevere. The menu of simple cucina Romana is slight but wonderful, with their signature dish the tagliolini cacio e pepe, pasta with pecorino cheese and pepper.

Spotlight on Rome

A NIGHT OUT in Rome goes like this. Aperitivo, preferably a negroni cocktail (Campari, Martini Rosso and gin) at a street-side bar; dinner and much wine; coff ee and pick-me-up at another bar; and fi nally, a er midnight, clubbing till the early hours.

The majority of party venues are located in the same areas, such as Monte Testaccio, Via Libe a, the centro storico, San Lorenzo, and Trastevere – perhaps the best place to start. Here, the rough, ready and cheap 23 Bar San Calisto fi lls with arty types, musos and intellectuals of an evening, drinking Peroni beer and alcoholic coff ees, the atmopshere buzzing out onto the piazza late into the night.

Not too far away is the hip to the lip 24 Freni e Frizioni, a former garage with contemporary art on the walls and plenty of loud, hedonistic boozing at night. The mojitos and caipirinhas are the cocktails of choice, it has its own bustling piazza

and there’s quality music (no commercial Europop to be found here).

Over in the centro storico near Campo de’ Fiori – a piazza whose drinking spots are popular with foreign students – 25 Il Vinaietto is a neighbourhood wine bar with a great selection of Italian tipples and bar snacks. The Tuscan Sangiovese wines are fab!

Club-wise, you can’t go wrong at 26 INIT in the Pigneto neighbourhood or 27 Sinister Noise Club just off Via Ostiense. Both are underground party joints with decent beers on tap and varying nights of DJ sets and live electronic, rock and indie acts, providing an alternative to the fashionista clubs in the centro storico.

For hip-cool-jazz-cats, or just anyone who likes jazz, 28 Casa del Jazz is a brilliant live music complex, with a top line-up of shows, and garden concerts in the summer.

Be sure to end your evening (or begin your morning) as the Romans do, si ing in a piazza or on some steps for a nightcap, cha ing with whoever you’ve met on the way.

HIDDEN BEAUTY

Frescoes on a shop ceiling are a clue to this building’s former life

TWO ART TREASURES can be found in a Madrid furniture shop called Rustika, but they’re not for sale: a ticket booth from the former Montano concert hall, which once stood on this site, and ceiling frescoes by Daniel Zuloaga (1852–1921). Zuloaga is known for his contribution to several famous buildings in Madrid, including the Velázquez Palace in Buen Retiro park and the Ministry of Agriculture. Here, in a totally unexpected place, we have another example of his artistic talent. 3 San Bernardino, tel. +34 91 541 9417

BURIED TREASURES

Now it’s gems of the literary kind that are in this vault

THE BASEMENT OF MADRID’S Cervantes Institute (founded to promote Spanish language and culture) contains a spectacular strongroom, designed in 1944 to house the safes and strongboxes

of the bank that used to occupy this building. This little-known place now serves as the Caja de las Letras (literary strongroom).

Entry is by a massive circular door about half a metre thick. Laid out over two fl oors are some 1,800 strongboxes. However, in 2007 the purpose of this strongroom changed entirely. Since that date the great fi gures of Spanish culture have used the strongboxes to store a secret legacy, which cannot be opened

before the date established by the individual writer, artist, scientist, musician or architect invited to participate in the scheme. Spanish writer Francisco Ayala was the fi rst to place material in a strongbox: various books and a letter, which can’t be removed until 2057. You can arrange a visit to see the vault — just don’t try to open any boxes!49 Calle Alacalá, tel. +34 91 436 7600, for group visits email [email protected]

Bamboo screens hide an innovative apartment block

FROM A DISTANCE you may see only a simple windowless bamboo cube, yet as you draw nearer you will notice adjustable double windows. This distinctive bamboo structure in the Ensanche de Vallecas district, which looks like a vast oriental cabin, is in fact a unique residential building. It comprises 88 apartments, subsidised to make them affordable to people under 35 who are low wage earners and might otherwise remain at home with their parents. Both inside and out, natural materials have been chosen: the car park, for example, is covered with greenery. The building itself takes up less than half of the grounds, the rest of which are given over to gardens and games areas. 13 Los Clarinetes

Coming to the city from the plain, the glance is attracted by the skyline of “Città Alta” (Upper Town), high on a hill and enclosed by its sixteenth-century Venetian walls, erected in order to defend the extreme western bulwark of the Serenissima (1428/1797). The architecture of “Città Alta” (365mt above sea level) is characterized by narrow streets. The most important monuments are in Piazza Vecchia and Piazza del Duomo: Palazzo del Podestà housing the recently opened interactive sixteenth century museum, Palazzo della Ragione, Biblioteca Mai (civic library), Duomo (Cathedral), the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, Cappella Colleoni (Chapel), Contarini fountain.Going down from “Città Alta”, after Porta Sant’Agostino, cobbled Via della Noca heads towards the neoclassical palace of the Accademia Carrara art gallery (actually under renovation – will reopen by end 2013). Founded in 1796, it was an idea of Count Giacomo Carrara to establish the Gallery and the Academy of Fine Arts. Accademia Carrara contains nearly two thousand paintings from Italian and European schools from fourteenth to nineteenth century. In front of the Academy is to be found GAMeC - Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery), opened in 1991. Besides its permanent collection of 300 artworks dedicated to contemporary art in all its form, it holds temporary exhibitions. From Porta Sant’Agostino, in Via Pignolo, stand the Museo Diocesano Bernareggi (Diocesan Museum), the seventieth-century church of Sant’Alessandro della Croce, the church of San Bernardino, which contains a particularly beautiful altarpiece by Lorenzo Lotto and the church of Santo Spirito with paintings by Bergognone, Andrea Previtali and Lorenzo Lotto.“Città Bassa” (Lower Town) is characterized by modern residential quarters and commercial areas up to its suburbs. The main urban transformations in “Città Bassa” were the construction of the Ferdinandea street by the Austrian Government in 1837 (now viale Vittorio Emanuele II) extended to the railway station in 1857 (now viale Papa Giovanni XXIII) and the Centro Piacentiniano laid out by the architect Marcello Piacentini and realized from 1914 to 1930. In the city centre there is the Donizetti Theatre named after the great composer Gaetano Donizetti born in Bergamo to whom is dedicated the Museo Donizettiano in via Arena, 9 (Città Alta). Take advantage of an under-visited beauty spot

WHEN A PARK IS THIS beautiful, why don’t you see more people in it? A sprawling 14 hectares of green in the Barajas district, El Capricho isn’t as full of enthralled visitors as it should be — perhaps because it’s rather out of the

way. Created in 1784 by local aristocrats the Duke and Duchess of Osuna, it’s punctuated by exquisite sculptures and mock temples, and small gardens in the style of different countries (English, French and Italian). There’s also a maze, a man-made river, a lake and an island. Various structures include a boathouse and a fort. Surely one of the best and most underrated places in Madrid to spend a hot day. LOST ARENA

Once the gli ering venue for a sport bigger than football

PELOTA, AS YOU MAY KNOW, is a traditional Basque ball game, and in Spain in the 19th century this sport was more popular than football. Behind the facade of a dilapidated building, peek from on high and you’ll see the remains of the Beti-Jai court, the last pelota court in Madrid and the city’s only example of 19th-century sports facility architecture.

Opened in 1894, the Beti-Jai (the name is Basque for “party all the time”) was extravagant, with Andalusian-style ceramic plinths, stands that could hold up to 4,000 people, and a court 67m long where all the different forms of Basque pelota could be played. After the venue closed its doors in 1919, the site was converted into a police station, a garage, and a band rehearsal space. Nowadays, the court — 4,000m2 in one of the most elegant districts of Madrid — is waiting its turn to be restored.7 Marqués de Riscal

Not at Arthur though, for he is a bicycle (they

have names here, according to the tour company

providing them) and can’t hear a thing, but at my

stupidity for ge ing a punctured tyre so soon a er

leaving the farm where I am staying. It turns out I’m

panicking over nothing. Ray, our tour leader, sees

me, makes a phone call and soon a man arrives to

unload a pink Sophy from his car boot. I check the

tyre pressure, adjust the seat, and pedal deep into

the gorgeous Dzūkija National Park.

We’re two hours south-west of Vilnius,

Lithuania’s vibrant, forward-thinking capital,

soaking up a very diff erent aspect of what this

country off ers the international visitor. It’s

Lithuania’s o en overlooked gorgeous rural

scenery and small villages that we’ve come to

explore. My Sophy and the surviving Arthurs roll

past orchids, wetlands, apple trees and thousands

of pines. Grasshoppers, lizards, voles, beetles and

toads line the sandy trails that lead us through the

forest. On the

rare occasions

our bikes pick up

speed, bu erfl ies

fl y into our faces.

On the regular

occasions we

dismount and stand still,

we hear the insects’ collective

buzz. The sound is almost

meditative. I don’t even mind

the odd mosquito bite.

At Ray’s suggestion we take a detour to visit

a small natural stream, the waters of which are

said to be a potent aid to fertility. According to

local folklore, many centuries ago a giant boulder

tumbled into the source and no children were born

in the village until it was removed. I take a sip of

the magical water and hope the impending rush of

virility won’t impair my ability to continue riding a

Arthur breaks down at the end of the pathway. I stand on the side of the road, arms raised in frustration, and start cursing.

girl’s bicycle.

We’ve

been enjoying

ourselves to the

point that we’ve

slightly lost

track of the tour

itinerary, and arrive at

the Beekeeping Museum in

Musteika an hour late. We have

to track down its modernity-shunning manager,

Romas Norkunas, the traditional way by running

through the nearby woods desperately shouting

his name. When we eventually locate him, he

rewards us by showing us how he makes honey:

a centuries-old technique befi ing of a man who

refuses to own a mobile phone. He uses a rope to

haul himself up a tree and his young daughter

chucks him a bee smoker, lit by rubbing fl int

against steel. Following his successful mission,

Romas’s children lie on the grass contentedly

sucking pieces of honeycomb.

We return to the main road and see a man in a

truck selling mushrooms to an elderly lady. At least

that’s what we thought we were seeing. I’m later

told that the woman, who didn’t look a day younger

than 95, was actually the forager. She still wakes

at dawn each day to sell her fresh mushrooms.

Mushrooms, I’m told on several occasions, are the

unoffi cial currency in these parts. In fact, the tour

we’re on is called “Mushroom”.

The man behind it, Ray Abromavicius, had

been living in London for a decade but found

himself increasingly drawn to his home country. In

2011, he took the plunge, le his restaurant job and

moved back, se ing up a tour company focusing

on Lithuania’s less-travelled roads. By taking small

groups into Dzūkija he hopes to promote rural

culture and customs, and help generate an income

for local people.

Later, when we return to our farmhouse in

the barely-there village of Kapiniskes, we meet

one such person. Zophia Stanionyte, dressed in

splendid traditional clothing, cooks a mushroom-

heavy dinner for us in her kitchen. Before we eat

we hit the sauna at the end of her garden, warming

down from our 20km cycle the Lithuanian way. We

get sweaty before diving into a freezing lake, and

repeat the process until we’re feeling fresh again.

We’re totally ravenous when we sit down

to hunks of succulent pork, glistening roast

potatoes, mushrooms and generous shots of the

local moonshine.

Stepping gingerly into a kayak the following

morning, I wonder what was in the mysterious

liquor we’d been drinking. Thankfully, the Ula

river, which cuts through the heart of the national

park, has a reviving quality. A er a couple of hours

of crashing into everything in and not in my path,

I get to grips with my vehicle. Fallen trees require

sharp turns and drastic ducks under branches,

and a er a day of water-bound heroics I’m feeling

happy but exhausted.

The remedy for my aches and pains is a mud

bath in the nearby spa town of Druskininkai. You

spend 20 minutes soaking in a tub of warm, slushy

local mud, and a further 10 minutes in the shower

trying to wash the stuff off . I had been sceptical

Even if I felt so happy becoming a mother, I was worried because suddenly I lost a lot of hair. In the end I was completely bald at the temples and I panicked! Now I have taken the Hair Volume™ tablets and am grateful that my hair has gained new life and volume.

W hen Mathias was about 2 months, I started suddenly

to lose a lot of hair. There was hair all over. Each time I was washing my hair in the shower, I shed a whole handful of hair and my brush was fi lled with hair. It was a very disturbing experience.

I panickedIn the end I was desperate! I happened to read about the new Hair Volume tablets in a weekly magazine and I was tempted.

I bought a course of 3 months and started the treatment. Very easy, because I only had to take one tablet per day.

Lots of new hairI have now taken one tablet every day for more than 3 months and lots of new hairs are showing. I have learned that it is normal to lose hair after a pregnancy, but I am very happy that I took it in my own hands to get back my hair!

A new invention!Hair Volume is a new inven-tion. Hair Volume is the only product, which contains the special growth factor procyanidin-B2 from apple – a natural ingredient, which can stimulate the epithelial cells of the follicle. The tablets nourish the hair roots with biotin, which is essential for healthy hair growth, as well as copper, which helps maintain normal pigmentation - helping avoid grey hairs. The tablets contain also extracts of millet, silica, and B-vitamins, which increase hair growth and volume.

Picasso’s British connection

The work of Pablo Picasso had an enormous impact

on British modernism, which is why Tate Britain

is staging the fi rst ever exhibition to explore the

artist’s lifelong connections with the country.

Specifi cally, his impact on seven big artists: Duncan

Grant, Wyndham Lewis, Ben Nicholson, Henry

Moore, Francis Bacon, Graham Sutherland and

David Hockney.

See more than 150 works from major public

and private collections around the world, including

over 60 paintings by Picasso himself. This new

show also looks back at the polarised critical

response to Picasso. Scorn was poured on his 1945

V&A exhibition, when modernism was lauded and

lampooned by turns as the pre-war “What Is Art?”

debate ignited again; and acclaim followed his 1960

Tate retrospective.

Good gigs abound

Few cities can rival London when it comes to its

spread of quality live music venues, from big,

sturdy stadiums to li le dives where you can

share a beer with the visiting band. If you want

to catch the next big things then head to the pub

and club venues of Shoreditch, and places like The

Time out in Greenwich

With warmer weather fi nally here, and – fi ngers

crossed – months more of it to come, London’s parks

come into their own. Hyde Park, Green Park, St

James’s Park (it has pelicans!) and Hampstead Heath

are the big, obvious green spaces to hit on a sunny

day, and quite rightly so. If you know and love those,

be sure to also experience the south-east Londoner’s

favourite, Greenwich Park, if you haven’t already.

World famous for the Royal Observatory and

Prime Meridian line (which divides the world’s West

and East hemispheres), Greenwich Park also off ers

sweeping views of the city skyline, a boating lake,

deer herd, children’s playground and more.

The big news in the neighbourhood this April

is the reopening of the Cu y Sark – the world’s last

surviving tea clipper. Damaged by fi re a few years

back, she has now been restored and the reopening

is towards the end of this month. The three-masted

sailing ship has been raised above her dry dock so

you can view the lines of her hull, and an onboard

exhibition explores the ship’s rich history. A li le

London treasure regained.

WITH SPRING IN THE AIR and

winter a distant memory, it’s time

to plan your summer break. And

this year, why not kick off those

fl ip-fl ops and put on your deck

shoes? Take to the water and

travel across the magnifi cent

Baltic Sea by modern passenger

ferry. Chill out and admire the

sea views before stopping off to

explore the ports in countries

as diverse and interesting as

Finland, Germany, Poland,

Sweden, Latvia and Russia.

Enjoy your voyage in

complete comfort with leading

cargo and passenger ferry

operator Finnlines. Let the ferry

take the strain so the only driving

you’ll need to do is when you

disembark at your destination,

ready to explore by foot, car,

mobile home, motorbike or

bicycle. For those who don’t want

to drive, the advantage of joining

a cruise is that you can travel

without a motor vehicle by fl ying

with Ryanair to one destination

country, cruise around the Baltic,

then fl y back from another.

Being on board is as much fun

as being on dry land: the cabins are

comfortable, the food in the buffet

restaurant is second to none and,

depending on the vessel, there’s

free use of the gym, sauna and hot

tub. Alternatively, indulge in some

shopping or enjoy a relaxing drink

at the bar – at very reasonable prices.

When it’s sunny, grab a deck chair

and soak up the rays while gazing at

the stunning scenery. Meanwhile,

there are games and playrooms to

keep younger travellers amused.

Finnlines off ers a variety of

routes across the entire Baltic Sea.

Heaven on earth

EDEN, THE EUROPEAN DESTINATIONS of Excellence, is an initiative to promote

sustainable tourism across the EU by

highlighting spectacular emerging

sites and cultural a ractions off the

beaten tourist track.

Each year the European Commission

selects a diff erent theme for the awards,

from ‘rural tourism’ and ‘intangible

heritage’ to ‘protected areas’. The

awards go to the most distinctive

towns, parks and regions with a

commitment to social, cultural and

environmental sustainability.

Since launching in 2006, EDEN has

introduced 98 stunning destinations

across 26 European countries to a wider

tourist market. As well as ‘decongesting’

the much-hyped tourism mainstays,

EDEN provides greater exposure

for unique and sustainable holiday

experiences in the EU.

21 Hungarian Kitchen and Pest-Buda Bistro, BudapestFor a true taste of Hungary, this pair of Budapest restaurants are a must-visit. ‘21’ takes the basics of the traditional cuisine, updating them to suit the 21st century. The original tastes are preserved and concentrated, but the dishes are lighter than they were in “the good old days”. ‘21’ has received the Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand distinction for great value since 2010, and was awarded 12.5 points

by Gault Millau. ‘Pest-Buda’ serves Grandma’s home style cuisine, using the best ingredients with love and care.
