2020/2021 will be available once our Churches re-open. Could Parishioners, in the meantime – those who can - please use ordinary

Page 4: R.V.I. & FREEMAN HOSPITAL CHAPLAIN: CONTACT FR. …€¦ · praying and singing hymns to God as the prisoners listened, 26 there was suddenly such a severe earthquake that the foundations

and Pope Francis.

In preparation for Pentecost 31st May 2020, Papal preacher Fr Raniero Cantalamessa underlines praise in prayer as an essential resource, especially in the midst of the coronavirus crisis.

The Acts of the Apostles recounts this episode in Paul’s life:

“The crowd joined in the attack on them, and the magistrates had them stripped and ordered them to be beaten with rods. 23 After inflicting many blows on them, they threw them into prison and

instructed the jailer to guard them securely. 24 When he received these instructions, he put them in the innermost cell and secured their feet to a stake. 25 About midnight, while Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God as the prisoners listened, 26

there was suddenly such a severe earthquake that the foundations of the jail shook; all the doors flew open, and the chains of all were

pulled loose.” (Acts 16: 22-26)

With their clothes torn, covered in blows, and shackles on their feet, Paul and Silas did not pray to God to help them, but instead sang the

praises of God.

The example of Paul and Silas invites us to leave aside, at least until Pentecost, all the discussion about coronavirus, or at least not to make

it the centre of everything. Let’s not sadden the Holy Spirit by considering it as less important (or

less powerful) than the virus.

Moreover, the example of Paul and Silas invites us to sing hymns and pray to God. This may seem absurd and difficult to accept, especially for those who experience in their own flesh the devastating effects of

this scourge, but in faith we can understand that it is possible.

Saint Paul proclaims that “all things work for the good of him who loves God.” (Romans 8:28) Everything without excluding anything;

therefore also the present pandemic! St. Augustine explains the profound reason for this: “Being supremely good, God would never allow any evil to exist in His works unless He

was powerful and good enough to bring good out of evil itself”

We do not praise God for the evil that brings the whole of humanity to its knees; we praise Him because we are sure that He will be able to

draw good out of that very evil, for us and for the world. We praise Him precisely because we are convinced that everything works for the good

of those who love God, and above all, of those whom God loves. I say this trembling because I don’t know if I myself would be able to do

it, but God’s grace can do this and more.

In the Good Friday preaching at St. Peter’s Basilica, I tried to identify some of the “goods” that God is already drawing from this evil: the

awakening of the illusion of being able to save ourselves, the sense of solidarity that this evil arouses and which has pushed some of our

brothers and sisters to the point of heroism.

I would add today: the awakening of religious feeling and the need for prayer. The extraordinary attention to the gestures and words of Pope

Francis, even outside the Catholic world, is a sign of this. Uniting in Praise With The Whole Church. So let us drown the virus in a sea of

praise, or at least try to do so. Let us unite ourselves to the whole Church which, in the Gloria of the Mass, proclaims: We praise you, we

bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your immense glory. There is no supplication in this prayer-only

praise!

A Prayer for Protection in a time of

Pandemic

O Mary, you always brighten our path as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you,

Health of the Sick, who, at the foot of the Cross, took part in Jesus’ pain while remaining steadfast in faith. O Loving Mother, you know what we need, and what we are confident you will provide for us at Cana in Galilee.

Intercede for us with your Son Jesus. The Divine Physician, for those who have fallen ill, for those who

are vulnerable, and for those who have died. Intercede also for those charged with protecting the health and safety of others and for those who are tending to the sick and seeking a cure. Help us, O Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the Will of the Father and to do as

we are told by Jesus, who took upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrow so as to lead us, through the Cross, to the glory of the Resurrection.

Under thy protection we seek refuge, O Holy Mother of God. In our needs, despise not our petitions, but deliver

us always from all dangers, O glorious and Blessed Virgin. Amen.

Masses for the Sick and their Families, NHS Front-Line workers and those working in Social Care The Catholic Bishops of England and Wales recognise that this time of the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting every person in our countries. Those who are sick, and their families, are suffering many hardships of isolation from contact with those they love. Our front-line workers in hospitals and in care homes all over our lands are giving exceptional service to those who are vulnerable at this time. In order to show a spiritual solidarity with all those who are involved in the ways described above, each Thursday, a Catholic Bishop will celebrate Mass in their Cathedral which will be live-streamed for people to join.

Final Mass will be this Thursday at 7pm.

28 May Bishop Terence Drainey St Mary’s Cathedral, Middlesbrough

MOTHER MARY,

We ask you to pray with us as we approach Pentecost, that we be

filled with the Holy Spirit:

“Remember O Most Loving Virgin Mary. That it is a thing unheard of, that anyone ever had recourse to

your protection, implored your help our sought your intercession and was left forsaken. Filled therefore

with confidence in your goodness, I fly to thee O Mary, Virgin of Virgins,

to you I come before you I stand sinful and sorrowful. Despise not my word, but graciously hear and

grant my prayer.” Amen.

Message from Fr. David

Reopening of Churches

Cardinal Nichols has, along with other faith leaders, been

negotiating with the Government officials about when and how

places of worship can open. It’s likely that at first we will only be open at limited times for private prayer and not every church will be able to open during this first

phase of reopening. We don’t yet know when the

phased reopening will begin but we will keep you informed once we know the plan. Any plan to open our churches however,

would include strict rules around social distancing.

This beautiful, brave little boy is called THEO JAMES ABBOTT and he has just turned 5.

His family are active members of a Parish in Newcastle. Theo has a condition called ‘lymphoblastic leukaemia.’ He has been on Chemotherapy for 9 months and has

been booked to continue until 2022. Only your prayers can help him. His mum, Helen, has given us permission to share this prayer request with all the Parish. She firmly believes that Jesus can heal him.

Helen says, thank you so much for all the wonderful prayers of St. Anthony of Padua Parishioners, remembering Theo in your prayers.

Rosary with Bishop Robert Sunday 31st May 2020

In response to Pope Francis encouraging us to pray the

Rosary, our diocese will be led in the Rosary by Bishop

Robert

on Pentecost Sunday 31st May, live streamed from

the Cathedral at 4.00pm.

Rosary During the Month of May On Monday Fr David prayed and shared

reflections on the Sorrowful Mysteries. The video of the Rosary is on the parish

YouTube Channel St Anthony and St Columba RC Churches. It is also accessible via the Facebook page

Our Lady and St Columba Wallsend. On Monday 25th May at 5.00pm

Fr David will lead us in praying the Glorious Mysteries. The Rosary will be for all our intentions but

please can we focus on a little boy who needs our prayers. His mum has requested that we all remember Theo in our prayers, so if you can please join in the Rosary at 5pm this

FIVE SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

PRAYERS, WHEN YOU

CANNOT ATTEND MASS.

Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O let nothing ever separate you from me. Let me

live and die in Your love. Amen.

O my Divine Jesus. How great is my desire to receive your Sacred Blood! Come now into my soul. At least, by a Spiritual Communion. I give

up my soul into your Divine Hands. Receive it into the bosom of your mercy. Amen.

I wish, My Lord, to receive you with the purity humility and devotion with which your most Holy Mother received you with the spirit and fervor of the

Saints.

Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, inebriate me. Water from the side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ,

strengthen me. O good Jesus, hear me within thy wounds, hide me, suffer me not to be separated from thee.

I desire to receive Thee into the poor dwelling that my heart offers Thee. While waiting for the happiness of Sacramental Communion. I wish to

possess Thee in spirit. Come to me, O my Jesus. May they love embrace my whole being in life and in death. I believe in thee. I hope in thee. I

love thee. Amen.

Members of our community have been emailing and phoning Fr David informing

him of situations that need prayers. As you can see from the photo Fr David has lit a candle on the Sacred Heart Altar for each

prayer request he has received. If you would like a candle to be lit please don’t

hesitate to get in touch with Fr David directly, preferably by email and he’ll light a

candle for you: [email protected].

COVID 19, OUR PARISH CHURCH WILL REMAIN CLOSED UNTIL

FURTHER ADVISED: The Parish Priest will continue to celebrate Mass in the Parish without the Faithful (Parishioners) Deacons, Altar Servers. The celebration of Mass ensures that the

Faithful can join in Spiritual Communion with the Priests of the Church.

BAPTISMS: Baptisms will be deferred until such time that the Public Health Advice

is that congregations can gather safely. In case of necessity, Baptisms should be celebrated with all the hygiene precautions that have been laid down by the Church in its COVID-19 advice. The Parish Priest will be contacting all Parishioners who have a

Baptism booked.se. FIRST RECONCILIATION AND FIRST COMMUNION:

These celebrations are postponed until a time that allows for families and friends to gather safely within our Church. The Parish Priest and School Headteacher will

confirm new dates as soon as it is safe to do so. MATRIMONY: If possible, the

celebration of the Sacrament of Matrimony should be deferred until such time that people can gather in numbers safely. However, if this is not possible and only in the

most pressing of circumstances, then those present for the marriage should be restricted to the Celebrant, Bride and Groom and immediate family, & if necessary, the

legal Registrar. The Parish Priest will be in contact with any couples preparing for

marriage. SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION AT THE EASTER VIGIL: This will

be dependent on the forthcoming decisions of the Bishops for the Holy Week ceremonies. The Parish Priest will be in touch with those preparing for the Sacraments

of Initiation in due course. CONFIRMATION: The celebration of Confirmation will

be deferred until such time that the Public Health advice is that congregations can

resume public worship. ANOINTING OF THE SICK: No pastoral visits will be

made to people unless in an emergency. However, we will offer phone support (SEE NOTICE.) Anointing of the Sick will be carried out by the Priest, avoiding physical

contact, adhering to the hygiene procedures set out. Visits to care homes/ hospitals

will follow advice from the staff on infection control. HOLY COMMUNION AND

PASTORAL VISITS TO THE SICK AND HOUSEBOUND: As our Eucharistic

Ministers are mainly over the age of 70 we are suspending visits for the time being & offering phone support, contact the Parish Office: 0191 2623817. The Priest and

Funeral Directors will work together to support families who are experiencing

bereavement. SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION: Confessions may be

offered on request as long as hygiene and social distancing requirements are observed (e.g. a physical barrier between the Penitent and Priest, such as a grille and cloth.) The

use of Rite II and Rite III of the Rite of Penance is not permitted as this, by necessity requires the gathering of people in our Churches.

POPE FRANCIS @ Pontifex https://twitter.com/Pontifex

“Receiving the joy of the Spirit is a grace. Moreover, it is the only force that enables us to

preach the Gospel and to confess our faith in the Lord. Faith means bearing witness to the joy that the Lord gives to us. A joy such as this cannot be the result of our own efforts.”

“If one follows Jesus, happy to be attracted by Him, others will take notice. They may even be astonished. The joy that radiates from those attracted by Christ and by his

Spirit is what can make any missionary initiative fruitful.”

“This life is the gift that God has given us. It is too short to be spent in sadness. Let us praise God, content simply to exist. We are children of the great King,

capable of reading His signature in all Creation.”
