Rutherglen Roundup Firstly, the club would like to thank Craig Adrians for all his support and for towing the trailer, lending us two boats not to mention a massive esky fully of ice and water. Also, a huge thank you to Jim Skidmore and Mark Brown who officiated over the weekend. With Bruce Ricketts unable to row due to injury, Jack, who thought he was going to have a leisurely regatta and sit under the gum trees, stepped in to join the boys, Andy, Nick, and Gareth. New member Yvonne Grosso also had to scratch due to a surfing incident much to her disappointment. This year’s regatta had the most entries ever. Whilst the regatta was down five events from 2018, the entries and competitors were up. Over the two days 155 events attracted 1118 entries with 576 rowers taking part which equates to 137 more entries and 48 more rowers taking part this year. It was hot. Very, very hot. Racing commenced at 8.00am on Saturday morning and our two junior rowers, Lottie and Grace started the day by competing in the FU17 single scull. L-R Grace Ricketts, Lottie Adrians Saturday morning. The girls had a total of ten races over the weekend. This was a huge number given the heat. With heats and finals this increased the number of races for Lottie and Grace who rowed like true champions. Saturday morning there was a Heat Policy meeting and this was implemented during the afternoons session. 800 meters was dropped to 500 meters. Competitors had the option of scratching without penalty. Even Lottie’s brother is involved. Johan helps out by carrying the oars. Who knows, we may one day see Johan and Lottie competing in a mixed double. Lottie and Grace also entered the mixed quad scull with Nick Inglis and Andy Sinclair on the Saturday and Sunday. Sunday’s row saw them make it to the final but unfortunately, they just missed out. It was a fabulous row right down to the finish line.

Rutherglen Roundup

Firstly, the club would like to thank Craig Adrians for all his

support and for towing the trailer, lending us two boats not to

mention a massive esky fully of ice and water.

Also, a huge thank you to Jim Skidmore and Mark Brown who

officiated over the weekend.

With Bruce Ricketts unable to row due to injury, Jack, who

thought he was going to have a leisurely regatta and sit under

the gum trees, stepped in to join the boys, Andy, Nick, and

Gareth.

New member Yvonne Grosso also had to scratch due to a

surfing incident much to her disappointment.

two junior rowers, Lottie and Grace started the day by

competing in the FU17 single scull.

L-R Grace Ricketts, Lottie Adrians Saturday morning.

The girls had a total of ten races over the weekend.

This was a huge number given the heat. With heats

and finals this increased the number of races for Lottie

and Grace who rowed like true champions.

Saturday morning there was a Heat Policy meeting and

this was implemented during the afternoons session.

800 meters was dropped to 500 meters. Competitors

had the option of scratching without penalty.

Even Lottie’s brother is involved. Johan helps out by

carrying the oars. Who knows, we may one day see

Johan and Lottie competing in a mixed double.

champions in training.

For some of our newer members, this was their first regatta

(as opposed to Head races) and first-time racing in fours and

quads. After some initial nerves they soon got into the swing

of things.

Cathy, Julie, Kat and Jacinta competed in quads, fours and

the eight. Also in the eight were Jenny, Ginny, Jo and Marion.

L-R Kat Bowden, Jacinta Croagh, Julie May and Cathy

Tsigaris coxed by Caroline Straford.

What a fabulous effort by this crew who managed

several second places just being beaten by a bow ball

in some instances.

Ginny, Kat, Marion rigging the eight.

Sunday saw the temperature hit 40 degrees. Racing

commenced at 7.00am. Clubs started scratching and

packing up. This was not an option for Yarra Yarra who

competed regardless. The water bottle refilling station

ran out of water and had to be refilled as did the

demister fans. Lake Moodemere looked more like the

waters of Albert Park Beach with all the swimmers. At

one stage, there were more swimmers in the water

than boats.

Jim Skidmore who was up bright and early Sunday morning.

A huge thank you to Jim and Mark Brown who gave up their

weekend to officiate at Rutherglen. In them doing so, it also

meant we did not have to provide a BRO Level 1. Legends.

Sunday saw the heat take its toll on RV official, Robyn Murphy

in the afternoon. Murf was taken to hospital in Yarrawonga but

was given the all clear.

The heat also took its toll on a couple of members who for

health reasons, had to pull out of races. In true Yarra Yarra

Spirit, it was not hard to find seat replacements. Thank you to

those members ho happily jumped in.

Lil, Sabine, Dahni and Lisa had some great racing. The girls

competed in quad and double events making it through to the

finals in a couple of their races only to be narrowly beaten

over the finish line.

L-R Lil, Sabine, Dahni and Lisa

Lil and Sabine

Winners are Grinners! Lisa won one of her single

events against some really tough competition.

Janelle, Marion, Alison and Jo competed in the quad

events. Competition was tough and the girls had

some fabulous rows. The girls also mixed things up

with Sabine, Dahni and Lisa on Sunday to compete.

L-R Felix (cox) Jo, Sabine, Janelle and Lisa.

Sunday also saw random checks on coxswains weight.

Felix was one of the first to be weighed. 25kg underweight.

Luckily there were plenty of rocks around to make up a weight

bag.

Alison on her way up to the starting line

Nick, Andy, Gareth and Jack teamed up to form a formidable

crew and were kept busy over the weekend. In true club

spirit, Jack gave up some of his singles races to fill in for

Bruce (not to mention down time under the gum trees!)

Nick and Andy entered a staggering 11 races over the two

days plus finals. They were rewarded for their effort with a

win in the MO2-

Congratulations!

The excitement of Rutherglen and heat was too much

for Andy who had a little nana nap.

Jenny, Ginny, Jackie and Ana joined forces to row both the

quad and four in masters events winning the four on

Saturday afternoon

L-R Jenny,Ginny, Ana, Jackie and our fabulous cox,

Caroline.

Ana, Jackie, Gareth and Andrew Goldstein rowed in the

mixed quad event. After blitzing our two boat race we made

it into the finals.

We scratched our final race as Panda was only just alive by

this stage. He was exhausted and sunburnt. Before we even

got int the boat he said he only had one race left in him. We

were happy with the row and scratched.

It was a fabulous weekend. As a club, we are very fortunate

to have members who are united. Thank you to those who

boat loaded and then turned up for boat unloading. With the

trailer from Carey being so high, we needed the height of

these gentlemen

Again, a huge thanks to Craig Adrians, Jim Skidmore and

Mark Brown.
