USF still threatened to end RU’s WNIT run though as the Bulls whittled its deficit down to two with 2:48 remaining. The Bulls went on a 7-1 run, limiting the Scarlet Knights to just a free throw coming from the hands of Canty. Courtney Williams, who lifted the Bulls to the semifinals with a buzzer-beating three against Mississippi, threw the ball up and in from underneath the basket as Rutgers clung to a 53-51 lead.

However, Williams’ layup would be the last USF field goal of the night. Rutgers would outscore USF, 9-1, over the final 2:48 for the final margin and a trip to the championship game.

Williams finished the night with 18 points for the Bulls, while Akila McDonald and Orekhova had 10 points apiece in the loss.

ABOUT WASHINGTON STATEThe Cougars are off to a 1-3 start having earned a win at San Francisco with losses on the road to UC Davis, Saint Mary’s, as well as a setback to Kentucky at home.

Redshirt sophomore forward Borislava Hristova leads Washington State at 19.8 points per game with junior guard Alexys Swedlund con-tributing 10.8 points per contest.

ABOUT NOTRE DAMEThe No. 6 Fighting Irish have started the sea-son at 3-0 with victories over Mount, Western Kentucky and Oregon State.

Five Notre Dame players are logging double digit scoring led by junior guard Arike Ogun-bowale at 19.0 points per game. Sophomore guard Jackie Young adds in 16.3 points per game followed by Nebraska transfer junior for-ward Jessica Shepard at 14.0 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. Freshman center Mikayla Vaughn is dropping in 11. 3 points from off the bench, while junior guard Marina Mabrey is averaging 10.3 points per contest.

LAST TIME VS. NOTRE DAMEThe Rutgers women’s basketball team last met Notre Dame as Big East conference rivals, fall-ing to the No. 2/3 Fighting Irish, 71-46, in front of a sold out crowd at Purcell Pavilion back on Jan. 13, 2013.

The Rutgers post players got into early foul trouble resulting in seniors Chelsey Lee and Monique Oliver spending a majority of the first half on the bench.

The Scarlet Knights trailed 37-17 at the half.

Second half action started with a 7-0 run by Notre Dame and finished with the Fighting Irish outscoring the Scarlet Knights, 34-29 for the game’s final margin. The Irish led by as many as 30, ahead 63-33 with 6:30 remaining.

All five Notre Dame starters registered double figures led by Skylar Diggins with 15 points. Jewell Loyd added 14 points, Natalie Achonwa and Kayla Mc Bride 11 points and Ariel Braker notched 10 points in the win for the Irish.

ABOUT ETSUThe Bucs have kicked off 2017-18 at 4-1 with the lone loss coming at the hands Tennessee. ETSU victories so far have included Cincin-nati, Appalachian State, Tennessee Tech and Duquesne.

ETSU is led by senior guard Tianna Tarter at 16.4 points per game followed by freshman guard Erica Haynes-Overton at 14.4 points per game.

MILESTONE NUMBERS TO REMEMBERRutgers head coach Stringer has compiled a 981-390 career record in 47 seasons and is 19 wins away from joining Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer and former Tennessee head coach Pat Summit with 1,000 career victories in women’s basketball.

In 2013, Stringer became just the seventh coach - men’s or women’s - to reach the 900-win mark.

Stringer’s 34 20-win seasons are second-best in women’s basketball history. Former Tennes-see head coach Pat Summit leads all coaches with 36 20-win seasons.

Stringer is the fourth active winningest Divi-sion I coach and sixth all-time in career wins in NCAA women’s basketball history.

In the Dec. 3 win over Bucknell last season, the Rutgers women’s basketball team played its 1300th game in history since beginning the program in 1974.

RU has gone 907-418 with the Scarlet Knights earning its 900th program victory in the 53-45 win over in-state rival Seton Hall on Dec. 13, 2016.

Other Big Ten programs with 900 or more wins include Penn State, who also reached the mile-stone during the 2016-17 season, Ohio State and Maryland.

Tyler Scaife is currently eighth on the Rutgers all-time scoring leaders list with 1,684 points. She needs 79 more points to move past Caro-line DeRoose (1990-94) to move into seventh place.

SEASON OPENING NOTESRU improved to 30-14 all-time in season open-ers and 13-10 in openers under head coach C. Vivian Stringer in the 76-63 win over JMU.

The Scarlet Knights are 36-8 in home openers, including a 17-6 mark under head coach C. Vivian Stringer, heading into the first game at the RAC in 2017-18.

Additionally, Rutgers has picked up three road wins after earning no road victories a season ago. Before downing the Dukes and Owls, RU’s last victory away from the friendly confines of the RAC was back on Feb. 13, 2016 in a 63-56 win at Illinois.

Rutgers put together back-to-back-to-back true road wins for the first time since 2014-15 sea-son when the Scarlet Knights rattled off wins at Penn State (Jan. 10 - 71-51), at Wisconsin (Jan. 18 - 73-61), at Purdue (Jan. 29 - 58-49) and at Michigan (Feb. 8 - 57-50).

Also in the same season, Rutgers earned wins in its first six road games at LSU (Nov. 22 - 64-57), at Wagner (Nov. 26 - 83-51), at #25 Arkansas (Dec. 7 - 64-52), at Temple (Dec. 10 - 88-55), at Iona (Dec. 20 - 66-58) and at Indiana (Dec. 28 - 66-51). The win against the Hoosiers was RU’s first Big Ten Conference game and victory.

The Scarlet Knights last opened up a season with three or more games away from the RAC during the 2006-07 campaign. In that season, which culminated in the national championship game appearance, RU played mainly neutral site contests taking part in the State Farm Tipoff in Norman, Oklahoma, the Time Out for HIV/AIDS Tournament in Malibu, California and the Paradise Jam Tournament in St. Thomas.

In 1986-87, Rutgers spent its first five games on the road going 5-0 during the span. That year, the Scarlet Knights went 30-3 overall won the Atlantic 10 title and reached the Sweet 16.

HELPING HANDSAfter committing 25 turnovers against James Madison in the season opener on Nov. 10, the Scarlet Knights have significantly cut down the number of miscues.

In the following games, Rutgers committed only 12 turnovers at Temple on Nov. 13 night and 13 turnovers on Nov. 16 at Charlotte.

Additionally, Rutgers has handed out 19 as-sists in each of the last three games. Ten Scarlet Knights recorded at least one helper last Mon-day’s 84-67 win over the Owls led by seven as-sists from Khadaizha Sanders.

Eight Scarlet Knights registered a helper in last Thursday’s 77-54 win over the 49ers led by a career-high five assists by senior guard Jazlynd Rollins.

Nine Rutgers student-athletes also dished out at least one assist with seven registered two or more assists. Ciani Cryor gave the ball out a sea-son-high five times, one shy of her career-high.

Last Thursday’s game with the 49ers also saw Rutgers with 20 steals, the most thefts by the Scarlet Knights since recording 22 steals at Penn State on Jan. 10, 2015. Eleven members of the roster were able to register at least one takeaway.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKESLast season against Temple, Rutgers scored only 37 points against the Owls. Only Desiree Keeling reached double figures with 10 points.

On Monday night, the Scarlet Knights reached 37 points by the 3:44 mark of the second quarter and finished with 84 points with 11 of 14 Scarlet Knights getting into the scoring mix. Four Scarlet Knights finished in double figures.

INTO THE DEEP ENDAll 14 members of the available roster have appeared in the first three games of the 2017-18 season. Through three games, the Scarlet Knight bench is averaging 40.3 points per contest.

Prior to this season, the last time Rutgers had 14 Scarlet Knights on the court was in a 65-26 win over Savannah State on Dec. 13, 2015.

In the last two games against Charlotte and in the home opener with Wake Forest, 12 of the 14 members of the squad scored.

WELCOME BACK T-SCAIFERedshirt senior guard Tyler Scaife returned to the hardwood after sitting out the 2016-17 season due to a medical redshirt to pour in 26 points in Rutgers’ 76-63 season opening win at James Madison on Nov. 10.

Her 26 points were the most scored by the Little Rock, Arkansas native since netting 26 against Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament on March 4, 2016.

ROUND & ROUND WE GO - WHO WILL SCORE - NOBODY KNOWS

Not only did Rutgers demonstrate its depth on Nov. 13 at Temple, but also the fact that any Scarlet Knight can have a big quarter at any given time.

Redshirt sophomore Ciani Cryor put away all 11 of her points in the first quarter, including a 3-of-4 performance from long range in front ofhometown friends and family.

The second quarter saw senior guard Jazlynd Rollins put away all of her team-leading 12 points as she went 5-of-7 from the field during the span.

Junior center Victoria Harris logged seven of her 11 points in the third quarter. As the Owls whittled a 24-point Scarlet Knight lead to single digits, Harris contributed five of RU’s seven unanswered points to close the quarter as the Scarlet Knights went back up by double figures.

Sophomore Kate Hill, meanwhile, poured in all eight of her career-high points in the fourth quarter.

CLEANING THE GLASSJunior transfer Caitlin Jenkins grabbed 14 rebounds in RU’s season opening 76-63 win at James Madison on Nov. 10.

Jenkins’ 14 rebounds were the most by a Scarlet Knight since teammate Desiree Keeling grabbed 14 against Temple on Dec. 17, 2016.

Before joining the ranks of the Scarlet Knights, Jenkins broke Southern Mississippi’s all-time freshman rebounding record with 280 boards.

One of the most recognizable names and faces in all of college basketball, C. Vivian Stringer has built an illustri-ous career highlighted by countless milestones, and now guides the Scarlet Knights into it’s newest era as a member of the Big Ten Conference.

Entering her 47th season on the sidelines, Stringer has been the primary architect in transforming three programs into national title contenders ever since her appearance in the first-ever NCAA National Championship game. She has guided teams to 25 of the 36 NCAA

Tournaments, including 10-straight from 2003 to 2012, and won the WNIT title in 2014.

The first coach in men’s or women’s basketball history to take three different schools to the Final Four (Cheyney in 1982, Iowa in 1993 and Rutgers, in 2000 and again in 2007), Stringer has been a pioneer, visionary and leader during her four decades of success on the hardwood.

Entering the 2017-18 season, Stringer has compiled a remarkable overall record of 977-390 (.714), which ranks fifth on the all-time women’s coaches victories list and fourth among active Division I coaches. In Feb. 2013, Stringer became just the seventh coach - men’s or women’s - to reach the 900-win mark and more recently in Feb. 2015, she became the all-time winningest Big Ten women’s basketball coach and has accumulated 192 Big Ten Conference wins during her tenure at Iowa and Rutgers. Additionally, her 34 20-win seasons are second-best in women’s basketball history.

In her 22 seasons “On The Banks”, Stringer has registered a 457-255 mark, hav-ing led the Scarlet Knights to 15 NCAA Tournament appearances, as well as the WNIT Championship in 2014. During the 2015-16 campaign, she became RU’s all-time winningest basketball coach.

Further solidifying her name among the elite in the game, Stringer was enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in arguably the best Hall of Fame class ever on Sept. 11, 2009. She joined fellow esteemed basketball greats Michael Jordan, David Robinson, John Stockton and Jerry Sloan on the stage at Symphony Hall to receive basketball’s ultimate honor. She became just the 11th women’s coach to earn the prestigious prize.

A 2001 inductee into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, Stringer has led her three teams to 25 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including nine trips to the regional final. She also made her sixth appearance on a USA Basketball coaching staff in 2004, serving as an assistant coach for the gold-medal win-ning 2004 U.S. Olympic Team. Named one of the “101 Most Influential Minori-ties in Sports” by Sports Illustrated in 2003, Stringer continues to be one of the most recognized coaches in the game.

A coal miner’s daughter, Stringer learned a valuable lesson from her parents growing up in the small tight-knit community of Edenborn in western Pennsyl-vania: “Work hard and don’t look for excuses, and you can achieve anything.”

That lesson has stuck with the legendary college basketball coach and has been one of the primary messages she has passed on to the hundreds of play-ers who have stood before her. It’s been her perseverance and strength in the eyes of adversity that has meant the most to the people around her. Stringer prides herself on not only teaching her players the game of basketball but more importantly providing them life lessons that stand the test of time.

Stringer has overcome many challenges in her life; the loss of her beloved father at the tender age of 19; in 1982, her only daughter being stricken with spinal meningitis just prior to her Cheyney team’s appearance in the very first Final Four; the sudden death of her beloved husband, Bill, to a heart attack on Thanksgiving Day 1992 and a bout with breast cancer which she kept a secret from nearly everyone in her life.

Through it all, Stringer has handled life with dignity and grace rising above the tragedies to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of young women.

THE ROAD TO RUTGERSStringer began her teaching and coaching career at Cheyney, a small, historically-black school outside of Philadelphia, Pa., in the early 1970s. Even before the seeds of Title IX had truly started to take root nationally, Stringer and her Wolves were playing to packed houses and creating a name for themselves on the East Coast.

In 1982, the NCAA sponsored its first-ever National Championship for women’s basketball, and Cheyney did the unthinkable by advancing to that first Final Four, losing to Louisiana Tech in the championship game. For Stringer and her players (not much older than herself), Cheyney’s postseason run put the small university on the national map, as well as on par with the national powerhouse programs.

Following 12 successful and fulfilling seasons at Cheyney, Stringer sought out a new challenge and found that opportunity at the University of Iowa. Beginning with the 1983-84 season, Stringer built a program that helped elevate women’s basketball to a whole new level. When Stringer got to Iowa, the Hawkeyes had won just seven games the season before her arrival and were ranked 299 out of 302 teams nationally in attendance. Stringer helped the team achieve unprecedented amounts of attention, including women’s basketball’s first-ever advance sellout at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Stringer’s hard work and dedication culminated in Iowa’s trip to the 1993 Final Four, a feat that made her the first coach in history to lead two different schools to the national semifinals.

WE ARE A FAMILYIt is not just about the success on the floor for the Scarlet Knights. Stringer’s programs have always had the feel of a family, but that family extends well beyond the confines of the RAC.

Community involvement has been an important part of extending that family, whether it be con-ducting free basketball clinics for local children, visiting with the young and old at local hospitals and centers, emphasizing the importance of education or lending support to Rutgers-based chari-ties and events. The Scarlet Knights have become more than students and athletes during their careers -- they have become citizens and role models as well.

That public visibility and involvement has, in turn, caused the community to embrace the Scar-let Knights and lend them support at the RAC. RU recorded its largest crowd in history to see a women’s home game when 8,587 fans witnessed the Scarlet Knights’ victory against the nation’s number-one team, Notre Dame, on Feb. 17, 2001, one of seven advance sellouts for RU since Stringer’s arrival.

ACCOLADES AND ACHIEVEMENTSStringer was at a loss for words before she was to give her Naismith enshrinement speech on Sept. 11. After all, her career extended over four decades of work and involved countless players and coaches who touched her life. Overcome with emotion and fighting back tears, Stringer delivered one of the most eloquent speeches, sharing with the crowd and a national audience on ESPN how her desire to coach was fueled early in her life.

In addition to Naismith, Stringer is also a member of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. En-shrined on June 9, 2001, in Knoxville, Tenn., the honor truly showed Stringer’s mark on the game in regards to equality, innovation and growth.

Stringer has been named the National Coach of the Year three times (Wade Trophy -- 1982, Converse -- 1988 and Naismith -- 1993) by her peers. She also was named the 1993 Coach of the Year by Sports Illustrated, USA Today, Converse, the Los Angeles Times and the Black Coaches Association.

In addition, she was tabbed the 2000 Female Coach of the Year by the Rainbow/PUSH Organiza-tion, a group founded by Rev. Jesse Jackson; the District V Coach of the Year in 1985, 1988 and 1993; the District I Coach of the Year in 1998 and 2006; the Big Ten Coach of the Year in 1991 and 1993; the BIG EAST Coach of the Year in 1998 and 2005; and a six-time Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Coach of the Year(1998-00, 2005-06 and 2008).

A native of Edenborn, Pa., and a member of the Alumni Hall of Fame at her alma mater, Slippery Rock University, Stringer and the late William D. Stringer have three children -- David, Janine and Justin. Stringer became a first-time grandmother in June 2009 with the addition of granddaughter, Dayton, and welcomed her first grandson, Ryker, in the summer of 2013.
