WhatisCAT?CreativeArtsTherapyusescreativeprocesses,likevisualartandmovement,tooptimizehealthandwell-being.Goalsmayincludebettercommunicationandincreasedphysical,emotional,cognitiveandsocialfunctioning.Creativeartstherapistshaveadvancedtraininginboththeartsandincounseling.Mostdisciplinesrequireamaster’sdegreeandcliniciansareusuallyeligibleforlicensureasamentalhealthcounselorinadditiontocertificationbyoneofthecreativeartstherapiesaccreditingbodies.ThefocusoftheRVTRICATprojectistoleverageexistingandemergingtelehealthtechnologytobringcreativeartstherapiestoruralandat-riskVeterans
WhyCAT?Sometimesweget“stuck”andneedtolookatproblemsfromanewperspective.Creativeactivitiesusedifferentpartsofourbrainthantalking.Makingadrawingaboutaproblemormakingmovementsthatrepresentaproblemcanhelpusviewtheproblemdifferentlythantalkingaboutitalone.Sometimeswenoticethingswemissedbefore.Sometimesweenjoythecreativeprocesssomuchthatitmakesiteasiertoaddressdifficulttopics.Theartscanalsoworkonmorephysicalgoals,suchascoordinationandmotorskills.Manypeoplealsodiscovertheyreallyenjoycreativeactivitiesandchoosetoengageinthemoutsideoftherapysessions.

HowDoesCATWorkviaTelehealth?Followinganinitialevaluation(typicallyconductedfacetoface),Veteransareseenweeklyforcreativeartstherapysessionsviaclinicalvideotelehealth.EachVeteranreceivesanartkitwithmaterialssuchasdrawingpencils,coloredpencils,markers,oilpastels,watercolorpaints,paintbrushes,drawingandpaintingpapersandajournal.PreliminaryworkbyourgrouphasfocusedonVeteranswithTBI,PTSD,healthconditions,andsubstanceusedisordersincopingwiththeirchronicillnessornewdiagnoses,stressmanagement,andenhancingemotionalwellbeing.
ResearchResearchshowsarttherapycanimprovecognitiveperformance(Alders,A.&Levine-Mador,L.,2010),reducesomaticandemotionalsymptoms(Elkis-Abuhoff,D.L.,Goldblatt,R.B.,Gaydos,M.,&Corrato,S.,2008),andimproveMood(DePetrillo,L.,&Winner,E.2005).
ArtsinterventionscanbeaformofEnvironmentalEnrichment(EE)therapy,whichhasbeenshowntoenhanceneuroplasticity,improverecoveryfunction,increasebrainresiliencetoinjuryandreducestressandanxiety(NationalInitiativeforArts&HealthintheMilitary,2012).
Whencomparedtoavarietyofotherinterventionswithveterans,includingjournaling,angermanagement,grouptherapy,andcommunityservice,arttherapywasfoundtodecreasenegativefeelingstates,andtodosoparticularlywithveteransexperiencinggreaterPTSDsymptoms(Johnson,D.R.,Lubin,H.James,M.andHale&Hale,K.(1997).
