Running Spybot Search & Destroy

This document will guide you through the process of running Spybot Search & Destroy (S&D). Step 1: Double-Click the “Security” icon on the desktop.

Double-Click the “Spybot – Search & Destroy” icon and close this window.

Step 2: The version may be different, since this program is updated on a regular basis. Update the definitions by clicking “Search for Updates”.

Select a location, most will work, but I usually select “Safer-Networking #2 (Europe)” and click “Continue”.

Click “Download”.

As the items are downloaded, a check mark will appear next to each item. If a red circle appears, begin the update process again, but choose a different location.

Once the updates are done, you may get this message, click “OK”.

If the updates require a new version, follow the instructions. Click “Next”.

Click “Install”.

Additional files are downloaded.

Click “Finish”.

Click “OK” for English or chose a language and click “OK”.

Click “Next”.

Click “I accept the agreement” followed by “Next”

Click “Next”.

Click “Next”.

Click “Install”.

The program begins to install.

If you are asked to restart the computer, close all programs and click “Finish”.

Once the computer is restarted, repeat step 1. You will be presented with a series of screens as shown below, simply click “Next” for each screen.

On the final screen, click “Start using the program“.

Repeat step 2. Step 3: Scan your system by clicking “Check for problems”.

Spybot now begins to scan your system with a progress bar on the bottom of the Spybot window. This scan may take several minutes to run (depending on the system).

When the scan is complete, all the detected items will be displayed.

Step 4: Remove the items by clicking “Fix selected problems”.

If you are asked to confirm removal of the items, click “Yes”.

A green check mark will be placed beside each item as it is removed. You can now close the program. If you are asked if Spybot can run when the system is rebooted, click “Yes”. This will allow the program to re-scan the system before Windows completely loads.
