Newsletter #7 Friday, March 6, 2015
Dear Parents,
We are in the process of clarifying guidelines around bringing electronic devices (e.g. cell phones) to
school. There are times our students are using them in class for a variety of purposes, typically something
research related. They are a great tool but can be a problem if used inappropriately. An example of this is when
photos are taken and posted to social media sites without the consent of the individual. Your support will be very
helpful as we continue the conversation with your children on the appropriate use of these devices. More
information on this topic is forthcoming.
We will be phasing out paper copies of our newsletter. We already post it to our school website and e-mail
it to those of you who have provided e-mail addresses.
Our basketball season just concluded with 4 teams, two boys and two girls, participating in tournaments.
We also have two grade 6 developmental teams. In total we have approximately 90 students playing basketball.
We are very proud of the great accomplishments and commitment we are getting from our students, most of
whom have to arrive at school for 7:30 am practices. We firmly believe in creating opportunities for all children
to participate in athletic activities for the purpose of developing healthy lifestyles. This is our primary goal.
Thanks to these staff members for devoting many hours of volunteer time to support this: Mr. Colp,
Mr. Mohammed, Mrs. Scott, Ms. Kuzik, and Ms. Holt. Their efforts and skills are greatly appreciated.
We wish all of you a very enjoyable Spring Break.
Sincerely,
C.S. Baldry

PINK DAY!
Div. 5, Mrs. Scott’s class, conducted a comprehensive survey of 137 students on ‘Pink Day’. The survey
questions asked students the following:
About being bullied
Observing someone being bullied
Intervening when you witness bullying
Cyberbullying
Where does bullying occur
Why to people bully
The results of the survey are encouraging, particularly with how our students respond to bullying
incidents. While many students say they had been bullied, the vast majority believed they managed the
problem by asking the person to stop, by getting support from a friend, or by telling an adult and
resolving the problem this way. Almost every student was able to use one or more strategy to resolve
problems.
All of us; students, you their parents, and staff should be heartened by the survey results.
CHIMNEY HILL NEWSLETTERS
Once again we would like to encourage all our
parents and staff to sign up on our Chimney Hill web
site to receive your newsletters. It is our goal to
distribute our newsletter by email only.
To sign up online go to our website:
www.surreyschools.ca/schools/chimneyhill
At the bottom of the school page you will see a box
asking for your email address.
STUDENT ILLNESS
We have had many students come to school sick.
If your child is showing symptoms of the flu or coughing
continually, please keep them home until
they are well. When students come to
school sick they spread their viruses to
other students and staff.
GRADE SIX BOYS’ BASKETBALL 2015
Chimney Hill loves its basketball! We had so many
eager participants this season. The grade six boys
practiced twice a week and focused on basic skill
development and game play. The boys were extremely fun
to work with and consistently demonstrated excellent
effort, energy and enthusiasm throughout the entire
season. It was a privilege working with such a talented
group of individuals and watching their skills improve
dramatically over the course of the season.
We are extremely proud of the following
individuals who made up the Grade Six Boys’ Basketball
this year:
Grade 6 Girls Basketball
What a great season we had this year with our
Grade 6 girls! From the very beginning of the season it
was clear that this team of girls would be dedicated and
ready to take on any challenge, and that is exactly what
they did. We had a short season, with only 4 practices
and 2 games, but what a difference we saw from the first
practice to the last game! The team had a great time
playing against T.E. Scott where they had a chance to
develop their game playing skills. In both games we
came out with a well-deserved victory, each girl making
an active contribution to earn those wins. Every girl on
the team should be proud of how far they came and both
Mr. Mohammad and Miss Holt encouraged them to all
come out to play next year for the Grade 7 girls’ team.
Hope to see you then!!

GRADE 7 BOYS
Our grade 7 boys completed a highly
successful season. The most impressive and enjoyable
part of coaching the boys, was their energy and
commitment to playing as a team. For example, not all
players are skilled at scoring baskets, but all players
can develop skills to help our shooters get quality
scoring chances. Our players bought into this concept
at the beginning of the season and therefore, by the
end of the season, were making significant
contributions to the success of our offense. Likewise
they worked very well together defensively.

GRADE 7 GIRLS
The grade 7 girls basketball team wrapped up
their 2015 season by sending teams to play days at
Cambridge Elementary and here at our school,
finishing third and fourth respectively. The girls
showed a great deal of improvement in their individual
skills and in their understanding and use of team play
strategies. We entered two teams in the regular
season schedule while using some grade six players to
fill out our rosters. The coaches are very proud of
how our girls competed and represented our school
this year. We hope that they continue to play this
sport when they move on to high school next year.
