Zhang Qian, Liu Xudong [email protected] OUT of his love of sports, Wan Zhimin has persisted in train- ing for and running marathons all around the country since 2014. He finished his fourth Shenzhen International Marathon yesterday morning. One thing that makes Wan special among other runners is that he is a bone marrow donor. In July 2016, Wan donated bone marrow to save a 4-year-old girl’s life. He has also donated blood more than 100 times. “I am passionate about run- ning marathons and donating blood, and I will not stop doing these two things for the rest of my life,” Wan told the Shenzhen Daily yesterday in the square in front of the Civic Center, as he prepared to run the Shenzhen International Marathon. It took Wan 3 hours and 18 minutes to finish yesterday’s race. He said it was not his best performance. “I feel good after running, but it’s a bit windy today and I could not speed up,” said Wan. The marathon lover has decided to look ahead and start preparing for the Dapeng New Year Marathon, which is going to be held on the first day of 2018. Wan said he has liked running since he joined the Army over two decades ago. But it wasn’t until 2014 that he started partici- pating in marathons. “Thanks to some friends who also love run- ning, I joined the half marathon at the Shenzhen International Marathon 2014, and after that I started to train for the full mara- thon,” said Wan. Over the past four years, Wan has run over 30 marathons all around China. “Physically, I feel much stronger and healthier than before, and donating bone marrow did not affect my health at all,” said Wan. To achieve better results, Wan does long-distance running training six times a week. He said that both running marathons and donating blood from time to time are beneficial for one’s health. “I used to be out of breath after running a few kilometers, but now I feel comfortable even after finishing 42.195 kilometers,” said Wan. “I will keep running until the day that I can no longer run.” Wan suggested that the orga- nizer of yesterday’s event could improve the check-in session by segregating those who are reg- istered to run the 6-kilometer race, the half marathon and the full length. He also thinks that the fueling stations should have clearer signs to help runners get supplies in a timely manner.
