For the last newsletter of the school year, I thought it would be appropriate to focus on SUMMER! While I believe that summer should be filled with all kinds of fun and relaxation for students, there is also the reality of summer learning loss. As you make plans for your child‟s summer break, consider some of these suggestions to help prevent learning loss:

Preventing Summer Learning Loss

Make use of your local library and librarian. It‟s a wonderful place to promote the love of reading, and the librarian can suggest grade-appropriate books that will keep your child interested and mo-tivated.

Check out safe, parent-approved Internet sites. There are many that offer a “summer camp” theme - a daily craft activity to do alone or with a parent, some brain teasers, awesome video streaming of important world events, and grade-related math, reading, and science work.

The summer months are an excellent time for your child to fill in learning gaps or zoom ahead with enrichment activities at supplemental learning centers, or via tutors.

Sleep-away and day camps can be specialized for leaning opportunities, especially for niche fields such as computers, science camps, and even math. Lots of other activities are interspersed to keep it an active experience for all.

Think of your summer vacation as a teachable moment. Vacation time is a great way to get your kids reading, doing math, and learning geography. Let the kids go online to help research vacation destinations and/or activities. Even if you can‟t leave town for a vacation, have your child compile a “virtual vacation” by doing some research and downloading pictures of events that he or she would like to do in the future.

Don‟t forget local summer learning opportunities, in addition to your library, such as the museums, zoos, concerts, and parks that they don‟t usually get to attend during the school year. Have them keep a written or pictorial journal of their activities, and perhaps email friends and relatives about what they are doing.

Find a way to motivate your child to complete a few math problems (from a grade-appropriate workbook) a few times a week, and to read a chapter in a pleasure book several days a week.

Using these or other ideas to make learning a part of a fun and active summer will help your child stay sharp for school in the fall. But don‟t forget that summer is also for relaxing, taking some time off, and just being a kid! I have truly enjoyed my first year of being the school counsellor at Rundle Academy and look forward to continuing in this role for the next school year. Please do not hesitate to contact me if there is anything I can assist your family with! Have a restful (and brain stimulating) summer!

Ms. Caines, School Counsellor

UN I FOR M UPDATE

It is hard to believe that we are already thinking about the next year. We have started to make plans for the High School Orientation Trips which take place at the beginning of the school year. The three trips (Frontier Lodge for grade 12 students, canoe trip on the Bow River for the grade 11 students, and camp-ing at Pine Grove for the grade 10 students) will be taking place next fall from August 31

st to September 2

nd, inclusive. More information which will be sent

home with your child in early June.

As of September 1, 2011, female students at Rundle Academy will not be permitted to wear kilts. Skorts will be the only uniform option available. Skorts are available for purchase at the Rundle College Uniform store. Thank-you for assisting with this change in our uniform code.

On the evening of Tuesday June 7th, the Grade 9 class celebrated their many

achievements and fond moments of Junior High at the Al Azhar Temple. Af-ter the meal, students and their families were treated to words of wisdom from Mr. Holowaychuk, Mr. Hauk and Dr. Robert Evans. Students also shared favourite memories and thanked those involved in their junior high years. Conner Rasch introduced the evening on behalf of the Grade 9‟s, fol-lowed by Nick Duus who said grace. The toast to the parents was given by Darian Halwas and Cole Risebrough. A response to the students was given by Sandra Risebrough and Colleen Halwas. An entertaining junior high retro-spective was given by the comedic duo of Oliver Tempel and Tristan May-bee. The toast to the teachers was given by this year‟s Junior High Student Council presidents, Jake Dean and Natalie Heaton. The evening concluded with the presentation of Certificates of Recognition to the students and a video presentation.

AWARD S DAY

Rundle Academy Annual Awards Ceremony Our annual award ceremony was held on Thursday, June 9

th. The

weather cooperated for the BBQ lunch that was held before the main ceremony, and it was great to see lots of parents in attendance to watch our students celebrate their successes this year. In addition, we were joined by our Superintendent, Mr. Dave Hauk, and members of the board, Dr. Bob Evans, Mrs. Cathy Buckley and Mr. Andrew McColl. Two new awards were added this year, the elementary and junior high “Moves Mountains” awards, which celebrate those students who have overcome personal challenges to meet specific goals. Thanks to all of you who helped with the ceremony and to those who came and cele-brated with us. See you again next year!

On May 24th, many music students took part in the Faces of the

World Art Gala in support of the Dirty Wall Project. The Music Club, Junior High performing arts class, and Senior High music class each performed pieces at this event. Thanks for all your hard work and congratulations on a great performance!

K I D S FOR K I D S CLUB

On Tuesday, May 24, 2011, Kane Ryan from the Dirty Wall Project was here for the Kids for Kids „Faces of the World‟ celebration and fundraiser. The evening was held to celebrate of not only the successes of the Kids for Kids program and their affiliation with the DWP, but also to celebrate the arts at Rundle Academy. The Fine Arts Centre was transformed into a gallery of works by students in the Elementary and Junior/Senior High Art programs. The Music Club performed a selection of songs as pleasant background music for the evening. The Foods program also provided many delicious treats inspired by Kane‟s travels in India.

Kane shared some of his inspirational stories from India and also explained how the money he has received from Rundle Academy's Kids for Kids program has helped him in the Saki Naka Slums. He sold his beautiful photography and other wares to raise money for future projects. Kane was able to raise almost $3000 through the sales and from generous donations. Kids for Kids also surprised Kane with a cheque for $5000. This money was raised from various fundraiser activities throughout the year such as bake sales, special lunches, the Justice Film Festival and the used uniform sale. Almost 100 people from the Rundle Community were able to join us that evening. It was a very suc-cessful venture. Thanks to everyone who participated!

NE W PL AYG ROU ND Academy Playground Update

Thank you to our generous families who have given dona-tions to our playground project. So far we have raised $2,100 of the $25,000 that we need to complete the playground. Thank you, as well, to those that have stepped forward to offer their assistance in the removal of the old playground. We have received some creative suggestions for tear-down, and the Playground Committee is looking into those. We are fortunate to have the financial support from the Soci-ety and PAC, as well as funding from the Community Spirit Grant, now we just need the final push to the finish line. Please consider contributing today. Donations can be sent to Ms. Pumphrey at the Rundle Academy Elementary School. Help us reach our goal and give our students the playground they deserve!

th, Constable Arns, Crime Scene Unit, gave a presentation to the grade sixes. After viewing the power-

point, students solved a crime scene scenario. Thumb prints were taken and students had to match their prints before receiving their certificate.

In order to prepare for the upcoming Provincial exams, the grade sixes had an all day science review in the elementary gym. The many hands-on activities certainly were a benefit to everyone. The students even had fun! Thank you to the parent volunteers who helped make this event a success: Brenda Preston, Vivian Larmour and Vance Markle.

HE R I TAG E PARK

On June 6, 2011, the students in Grades 4 and 5 went on a field trip to explore Heritage Park as part of the Social Studies curriculum. Heritage Park provided the students with a glimpse into the stories and history of Canada‟s past and the people who helped establish and build this country. Students especially enjoyed all of the hands-on materials and visual aids that helped to reinforce what living in early Canada might have been like for settlers. After a non-stop, action-packed day, we returned to school ex-hausted, but filled with new information.

This semester nine students took part in Rundle Academy‟s first ever rock climbing class. The students started off the semester learning the fundamen-tals of knot tying, equipment use and rock climbing safety. For three months the students have been going to the Calgary Climbing Centre twice a week to climb on the indoor climbing wall. This past Tuesday the climbers headed out to Wasootch Creek climbing area in Kananaskis where they put their skills to the test with outdoor climbing. The instructors and other climbers were very impressed with our group‟s safety awareness and climbing expertise. Ms. Carberry would like to thank all of the participants in the class for a great se-mester!

The Junior High OEE class has had a terrific semester. We started off in January building snow shelters. Our snow-shoe trip took us out to spectacular Kananaskis country. The students visited Mountain Equipment Coop to assist them in getting answers for their outdoor equipment assignment. Most recently, we completed our canoeing unit and had two good outings at Carburn Park. Unfortunately, our river float trip was first postponed by heavy rain fall and then, subsequently, by high water levels. We were then unable to use the Glenmore Reservoir because of “low” water levels. After all was said and done, we got to enjoy the great weather and great conditions back at Carburn Park. We will now finish the year off with the cycling unit. Students need to have their bikes and helmets at school for Tuesday, June 7

th. So break out the bikes, blow off the dust and bring them in so we can get them ready for some skill building

and bike path riding.
